DESCRIPTION
The SM560SA is a 56 Kbps dial-up
Modem in a standalone case. It is
completely compatible with other V.34 AT
command set Modems and is designed for
traffic control environments. The
SM560SA has a built in power supply and
plugs into a standard outlet. The
SM560SA-12 connects to a 12VDC
supply. The Black wire from the cord is
connected to +12V and the white wire is
connected to Ground. The SM560SA
comes standard with an RS-232 port that
connects to a Computer or Traffic
controller through a DB-9 (female)
connector on the back panel. The phone
line connects to the SM560SA through a
standard RJ-11 connector. The SM560SA
can not be used with leased lines. A second
RJ-11 connector can be used for a phone
connection.
The SM560SA can operate at 56 Kbps and
automatically fall back all the way down to
300 baud. The Modem speed can also be
set using the AT commands if wanted (see
AT Command listing). The serial port has a
maximum speed of 115.2 Kbps and is RS232 and V.24 compatible. An RS-485
option is also available using the same DB9 connector.
A speaker is included internal to the
Modem so that call progress can be heard.
The speaker is controlled through standard
AT Commands. Front panel LEDs show
the status of the Modem. The SM560SA
has Auto Answer, Auto Dial, and tone or
pulse dialing. A front panel switch allows
you to set DTR active all the time if DTR
is not available. Front panel dip switches
also allow you to invert the RS-485 data
and control signals if that option is
installed.

Th SM560SA can store 2 user profiles and
4 phone numbers. The numbers can have
up to 32 digits.
INSTALLATION
The SM560SA comes from the factory set
up for 90 to 130 VAC. If 180 to 260 VAC
operation is required, the Zero Ohm
jumpers labeled “110VAC” (R8 and R9)
should be removed and the Zero Ohm
Jumper labeled “220VAC” (R10) installed.
These jumpers are located between the
transformer and the fuse on the PC Board.
The SM560SA-12 connects to a 12 Volt
DC supply rated at least to 0.5A. The
Black wire connects to +12V and the white
wire connects to Ground. The green wire is
Chassis Gnd.

The Phone line is connected to the RJ11
connector on the back panel labeled
“LINE”. An exterior phone can be
connected to the RJ11 labeled “PHONE”.
The RJ11 connectors are connected in
parallel so do not use the phone while the
modem is being used.
RJ11 PIN-OUT
2 TIP
3 RING
The DB-9 connector is pinned out so that a
one-to-one cable is needed to connect to
most computers. Since most computers use
a DB-9 connector with male pins, the cable
will need to have one female and one male
connector on it.
A special cable will be needed if you have
the RS-485 option since there is no
standard pin-out for RS-485 with this
connector. The DB-9 is pinned out
according to the way CALTRANS has
defined it on the 2070-7.
The connection chart for a 170 type
controller is shown below:
170 Connection Chart
Function DB-9 170 C2,20
TXD 3 K
RXD 2 L
RTS 7 J
CTS 8 M
DCD 1 H
GND 5 N
As can be seen from the Chart, the 170
doesn’t use DTR and DSR. DTR can be set
up to be ignored by the Modem with an AT
command. DTR can be permanently
asserted with the front panel switch if you
don’t want to use the AT command.
485 OPTION
The SM560SA has the 120-Ohm
termination resistors built into the unit on
the input lines (TXD and RTS). This
Modem is not designed to be used in an
RS-485 Multi-drop system.
The polarity of theRS-485 signals can be
inverted if needed by two front panel dip
switches. The Switch labeled “DATA” will
invert the TXD and RXD signals and the
Switch labeled “CTR” will invert the RTS
and CTS signals. These Switches have no
affect on RS-232 operation.
Indicators
The Indicators on the front panel give the
status of the SM560SA.
POWER………Indicates that the Power
Supply is operating.
TXD…………Indicates that data is being
Transmitted
RXD………….Indicates that data is being
Received
DTR……….. Indicates that Data terminal
Ready is true.
DSR (OH)…..Indicates that Data SET
Ready is true. It is also
An indicator of the OFF
Hook condition.
DCD…………Indicates that the modem
Is detecting a carrier.
RI……………Indicates that the Modem is
Receiving a Ring signal.

There are no adjustments or user selectable
features inside the Modem. There is no
preventative maintenance required or
anything that needs to be adjusted for the
life of the product.
The following pages contain a summary of
the AT Commands and “S” Registers that
the SM560SA responds to. The factory
default settings are also shown. A complete
definition of the AT commands is too large
for this Manual (174 pages). If one is
required, a PDF file (450K) can be sent
electronically to you.
