1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 SPECIFICATIONS

The Obstetric Susie® S500.100 is a versatile skills trainer
for practicing routine delivery techniques and often -
seen complications made from durable material.
1.2 TERMINOLOGY
Facilitator: The person conducting the simulation;
an instructor or lab sta member.
Care Provider: A person participating in the
simulation as a healthcare provider.
Perineum Insert: The structure that includes perineum with the vagina.
Pelvic Opening: The opening in the pelvic region of
the trainer for installing the perineum insert.
1.3 CARE AND MAINTENANCE
The lubricants and other accessories provided are for use with the
accompanying patient simulator only. The lubricants and other
accessories are not suitable for human use or medical treatment/
diagnosis and should never be used for such purposes.
NOTE: Damage caused by misuse is not covered by your warranty. It is critical
to understand and comply with the following guidelines.
General
Do not wrap this or any other Gaumard product in newsprint.
Marks made with ballpoint pens, ink or marker cannot be removed.
Replacement parts are available from Gaumard or from your distributor.
Storage
Store the skills trainer in a cool, dry place. Extended storage
should be between 32°F - 85°F (0°C to 29°C).
It is acceptable to operate the skills trainer at an ambient temperature
of 95˚F (35˚C) and humidity: 40% - 60% (non-condensing)
Do not stack or store heavy materials on top of the box.
CAUTION: To avoid damage to the skills trainer, please
store and ship it in the clear bag provided.

Cautions
Treat the skills trainer with the same precautions used with a real patient.
Have care providers wash their hands prior to use to
prevent dirt and oils from clinging to the material.
Cleaning
Remove all traces of lubricant at the end of each session with a cloth.
Remove the fluid using the fill kit.
Flush the fluid reservoirs with a 30:70 mix of isopropyl alcohol to
water after each day of simulation then suction all fluid out.
The skills trainer is “splash-proof” but not water
proof. Do not submerge in water.
The skills trainer should be cleaned with a cloth
dampened with diluted liquid dishwashing soap.

Do not clean with harsh abrasives.
Dry thoroughly after every cleaning.
Never drag or slide the skills trainer during transportation,
or damage to the skin may occur.

2. OVERVIEW
2.1 FEATURES
Anatomically accurate landmarks includes pubic bone
Removable soft abdominal cover helps demonstrate
internal rotation, and external rotation
Inflatable cushion lifts birthing baby for palpation
and eases fetal manipulation
Removable cervix and vulva inserts
Vulva is flexible enough to allow the care provider to help
the fetal head and shoulders through the vulva
Cervix dilates as labor progresses
Birthing baby allows for “version” exercises with palpable
fontanelles, spine, shoulders, elbows, and knees
Birthing baby has palpable fontanelle and other
landmarks for fetal palpation exercises
Lifelike placenta with removable cotyledons
Episiotomy modules include tears in the labia minora,
mediolateral tears, and standard mediolateral episiotomy
2.2 PROCEDURES
Execute cephalic, and breech deliveries
Birth from ROA or LOP positions
Demonstrate shoulder dystocia, or C-section delivery
Perform Leopold, Ritgen’s, and Pinard maneuvers during breech deliveries
Practice intrauterine manipulation to convert
breech or transverse to vertex delivery
Perform placental and umbilical exercises such as placental
delivery, placenta previa (total, partial, & marginal),
nuchal cord, cord prolapse, and many others
Practice umbilical cord procedures like clamping and cutting.
Perform operative deliveries with real instruments like
vacuum suction delivery and forceps assisted delivery
Practice postpartum care such as fundal massage with
the “boggy” uterus and episiotomy modules
Facilitate suture repair for the episiotomy trainers using real instruments

3. INITIAL SETUP
3.1 CARE AND CAUTIONS DURING UNBOXING
When unboxing the skills trainer, hold and lift from both sides of the torso.
Do not pull or drag from the upper legs or from the skin
as this may cause damage to the simulator.
Lay on a clean, flat surface for use.

3.3 ASSEMBLY
Obstetric Susie® comes partially assembled along with the articulating
baby, placenta and umbilical cord and a vulva insert installed. The
birthing mechanism is included separately for installation.

3.4 REMOVING THE ABDOMINAL COVER
1. The abdominal cover
attaches with snaps. To
remove the abdominal cover,
gently lift the 6 snaps.
2. To secure the abdominal
cover, orient the snaps
and gently press each
of them down.
3.5 INSTALLING THE BIRTHING MECHANISM
1. Unscrew the 3 bolts
2. Align the birthing mechanism
with the end of the torso
3. Screw on all 3 bolts
into each hole in the
clockwise direction.
NOTE: Do not tighten until
all three bolts are on.

3.5 INSTALLING THE CERVIX
1. Align the cervix with
the pelvic opening and
gently push the top snap
beneath the pubic bone.
2. Secure the cervix by
gently pressing the two
snaps on each side onto
the abdominal wall.
