General Information

This manual applies to the GAI-Tronics 702A Single-Party Indoor 115 V AC Amplifier Enclosure, which is an important component of the 700 series Page/Party party systems.
The 702A Enclosure is constructed of fabricated steel, and is equipped with terminal strips for connecting the system cable. The 701 and 751 series amplifiers mate directly with this enclosure.

Installation

CAUTION
the approval list ing in the Specification sec t io n of this manual. Such installation may cause a safety hazard and consequent injury or property damage.
When installing an add-on st ation, consu lt the sys tem layout diagram at the end of this ma nual. This figure, when used in conjunction wit h the station ins tallation information and ca ble layout guide, should provide all the infor ma tion necessary t o insta ll additional Pa ge/Pa rty< stations.

Enclos ure Placement

All GAI-Tronics Pa ge/Pa rty® units are wired in parallel. Good system layout des ign minimizes t he cable required for ea c h insta llation. GAI-Tronics multi-conductor cable, designed esp ecially for this application, is recommended. The number, size, and color -coding of condu c tors are lis ted in the ac c ompanying sys tem connection diagrams.
Do not install this equipment in hazardous areas other than those indicated on
System layout and power c able length are ver y important when installing P age/P arty< equipment. Although it var ies f or different sys tems, t he general guideline is t hat the total power c able length s hould not exceed one mile (5280 feet) for 115 V ac systems. The total cable length is the most important consideration while cable length b et ween the s tat ions is generally not a fac tor.

Mounting

The 702A Enclosure is not supplied with conduit or cable openings. D rill or punch thes e op enings using the template supplied before mounting the enclosure. The recommended cable entry point is via the bottom of the enclos ure near the rear surfac e to pr event mois tur e f rom drip ping onto t he t erminals or PCBAs. A secondary location for ca ble entry is in the top of the enclosure toward t he s i des . Avoid the t op center, as it may inter f ere with the pl u g- i n amplifier receptacle. Under no cir c umsta nc es should cable entr ies be made in the side of the enclosure as this may interfere with the installation of the plug-in amplifier.
For specific det ails including mounting hole dimensions, refer to Figure 1. W hen mount ing the enclosure, use caution to avoid damaging the t erminal bloc ks inside. The sugges ted mounting height f or all sta tion enclosures is 54 inches (137 cm) up to the centerline of the enclosure.

Wiring

Attach the conduit to the enclosure. Feed the wiring t hrough t he conduit a nd bring it into the enclosure. See Figu re 2. Follow the wir e colors carefully beca use the colors corres pond to GAI- Tr onic s 60038 Series cab le. The wires must be spade-lugged a nd connected ca refully and completely to the termina l b l oc k. An improper ter mina tion may res ult in diminished stat ion performance.

Local Muting

Figure 2 illus trates loc al speaker mut ing when stat ions are completely assembled and paging oper ation occurs. N ormally, when the station b utton is pr essed, the paging s peaker c onnected to that s tat ion is silenced (muted) to pr event acoustic feedback to the handset microphone. However, while the hands et is in use for pa rty line conver sat ions, t he p aging sp eaker is “live” to ena b le p aging ca lls from ot her stations .
To d i sa ble t h e mute f eatur e, fo l l o w these instructions :
1. Locate the lugged violet wire attached to terminal point 7 (mute) on the terminal block within the
enclosure.
2. Transfer the lu gged violet wire to terminal point 8 (P age L1) . After any muting c hanges are made, unpac k the station amplifier and inst all.

Mutual Muting

In the event that f eedback occurs within an area and reposit i oning of the system speakers does not help , mutual muting may be used to correct this problem.
Perf orm the following st ep s to mutually mut e t he adjacent amplifiers/ha ndsets within a zone.
1. Ensure that the p urp le lu gged wire is connect ed t o terminal 7 of T B1.
2. Connect terminal TB1- 7 of the handset s tation to TB1-7 of the station wit hin the zone tha t is causing
feedback. T his is done by using the sp ar e s ystem wire (orange condu c tor) f rom within the s ystem ca ble t h at ru n s between t h e stat i o n s.

Maintenance

Regula r insp ection and a good pr eventi ve maintenance program will increa se the relia bility of you r GAI-Tronics station. The GAI- Tr onic s Field S ervice Depa rtment can formu late a service cont rac t suited to your fac ility’s s pecific need for preventive maint enance.
®
In addition, t he following procedu re ca n be used to keep Page/ Party
systems o per at i n g effectively .
WARNING
Before performing any of the following preventive maintenance steps, remove
all power from the station.
1. Remove the a mplif i er from the enclo sure.
2. Visually check the int erior of the enclosure for signs of c ontamina tion suc h as du st, c ondens ation or
process liquid.
3. Using the No. 10440-002 Maintenance Cable, plug the amplifier into the connector in the enclosure.
Check, and if necess ary, adju st the amplifier t o ma ximize performance.
4. Reinstall the a mplif ier in the enclosure. Ens ure that all gasket s and hardware are in plac e. Failu re to
install the gaskets, which also act as spa c ers, c an res u lt in dama ge t o the connector s on the amplifiers and insi de t he enclosur es and can cause sys tem faul ts.
It may become necessary to re-terminate some or all of the enclosures in a system. If so, strip the wires bac k to clean c opper and connect only one wire to ea c h c onnector to allow for easier future troubleshooting.

Troubleshooti ng

The following t able lists some hints to a id technicia ns in troubleshoot ing.
Problem Solution
Feedback occurs only duri ng page.
1. If a speaker is clos e t o the station, try u sing the muting f eature in the amplif ier
enclosure at the termina l blocks. Connect the violet wire at TB1-8 to TB1-7. Refer to the wiring diagram.
2. Ensu re tha t speakers att ached to other stations located nearby a re not p ointed in
your direction. If changing the orientation of the ot her speakers has no eff ect, mutual muting may be required. Mutual muting s ilences all the speakers within proximity to t he affect ed s tat ions during a p age from a ny one of the mutually muted st ations .
Connect the ora nge wire (sp are) to the T B1-7 of all the s tat ions to be mutually muted. N
OTE: If too many stat ions are selected, paging coverage can be
adver sely aff ected.
3. Check line ter mina tions a t the line ba lance as sembly. Line b alance assembly
connections are critical.
Crosstalk occurs.
One or mor e system cable pa i rs may be improperly termin at ed . Visually in spect the system cable connections for ac c idental cross i ng of the cable pairs or grou nds.
