Using the Tablet PC
This chapter covers the fundamental concepts, basic system operation and use, and system functions of the Tablet PC.
The casing of your Tablet PC can become very warm during prolonged operation with the power supply unit. Therefore, touch the device carefully and only in the areas coated with a thermal suede if possible.
i
If you want to operate the device on battery power, first check that the battery is charged.
System modes
Before you begin using the Tablet PC, review the different system modes that the system can use. Being familiar with these system modes will help you determine whether it is appropriate to turn on, resume, suspend, hibernate or shut down the system when you begin or end a session.
Your system may be configured to enter some of these modes automatically after a period of inactivity to conserve battery power.
ON mode
The system is running. The display screen is on.
Idle mode
Some system functions are regulated or turned off to conserve power. The display screen may be turned off. The system returns to the ON mode when pen activity or other input is detected.

Suspend mode
There are two different Suspend modes: Your system may be configured to use either
i
Suspend-to-RAM mode
All system functions are turned off to conserve power. Power to memory is on, maintaining data in programs that were running before system operation was suspended.
The system does not respond to the pen or other input when in Suspend-to-RAM mode. Refer to the "Resuming operation" section in this chapter for information on returning the system to the ON mode.
Hibernate mode
All system functions are turned off to conserve power. Active data in programs that were running before suspending system operation is stored on the hard disk drive.
The system does not respond to the pen or other input. Refer to the "Resuming operation" section in this chapter for information on returning the system to the ON mode.

Using the Tablet PC
Powering up the Tablet PC
Follow the procedure below to start the Tablet PC. However, you must first make sure that the system is switched off (OFF mode, hibernate mode). To do so, observe the Status display:
If the power indicator icon is not visible, the system is in OFF mode or in Hibernate mode. It is safe to perform this procedure.
If the power indicator is flashing or blinking, do not perform this procedure.
Ensure that the battery in your Tablet PC is sufficiently charged, or connect an external power
source such as the power adapter or auto adapter to your Tablet PC.
Press the On/Resume/Suspend button to start the system.
After performing system initialisation, the system starts the operating system installed on the hard disk drive. Once the operating system is running, you can use the system.
Switching off the Tablet PC
Follow these steps to shut down and turn off your system:
If system operation has been suspended, resume system operation. Additional information is
contained in the section "Resuming operation" in this chapter.
Close all open programs.
Choose Shut Down from the Windows Start menu.
The system is now switched off.

Enabling Suspend mode
The Tablet PC allows you to suspend the system operation without closing programs or exiting the operating system. Use this feature to conserve battery power when a system shutdown is not practical or when the battery needs to be changed.
If you have set your system to turn Shut down from the Power Options utility in the Control

operating system or power management program.
If you are replacing the battery, wait until system operation is suspended and the power indicator is blinking before you remove the battery. Failure to do so could result in loss of your unsaved data. (Note that if the Resume On LAN function is enabled in the BIOS Setup, you should not remove the battery unless the system is shut down. When Resume ON LAN is enabled, the buffer battery is disabled in order to optimise battery life.)
The power indicator either flashes (Suspend-to-RAM) or is not displayed (Hibernate) when system operation is suspended, depending on how your system is configured. At this point, programs that were running are stopped, active data is saved, and the system enters one of two different low-power modes, or suspend modes, as explained in the following paragraphs
Observe the power indicator in the status display to determine which suspend mode your system is using.
Flashing: Suspend-to-RAM mode
In this mode, the data is retained in RAM memory by keeping power applied to the RAM memory while most of the other system components are switched off. The Battery Gauge icon indicates the battery charge level.
Is not displayed (dark): Hibernate mode
In this mode, active data is stored on the hard disk drive. Power draw is reduced to the same level used in OFF mode. When the system is in Hibernate mode, the battery gauge icon is not visible. In this mode, there is no danger of losing data if battery power is lost.

Page 27
Using the Tablet PC
Refer to the "Resuming operation" section in this chapter to resume system operation. Also, note the following with regard to suspending system operation:
You can remove the battery while the system is in Suspend-to-RAM or Hibernate mode in order to install a charged battery. To prevent losing unsaved data, wait until system operation has suspended before you remove the battery. Note that after you remove the battery, you have approximately five minutes to replace it with a new battery or to plug in a power supply before the buffer battery is depleted.
Your system may be configured to suspend operation automatically after a period of inactivity.
Your system may be configured to enter Hibernate mode automatically after a period of time in
Suspend-to-RAM mode.
The system uses a small amount of battery power when in Suspend-to-RAM mode. Eventually, the battery will become fully discharged.
If you will not be using the system for an extended period of time, shut down the system
i

system will beep periodically. If this occurs, suspend system operation, shut down the system, or attach an external power source, such as the power adapter, to the Tablet PC.
If the battery charge drops to a critically low level while the system is running, the system is forced into a pre-selected mode (Suspend-to-RAM or Hibernate). If this occurs, you must either install a charged battery, or connect an appropriate external power source such as the power adapter before you can resume system operation. (If the battery charge drops to a critically low level while the system is in Suspend-to-RAM mode, the system stays in Suspendto-RAM mode until power is restored or totally dissipated.)
When the system changes into suspend mode, any data transfer currently in progress is interrupted. Therefore, some programs may block the system from suspending to prevent an interruption.
The suspend function of the On/Resume/Suspend button may be disabled to prevent accidental interruption. If this is the case, pressing the On/Resume/Suspend button will not suspend system operation as described here. (In this case, suspend mode can only be achieved using the system software.)
If your system is equipped with a PC card that allows you to connect to a wired or wireless network, you may be logged off the network after a period of inactivity while system operation is suspended. Contact your network administrator for details on log-off parameters for your network.

resumes. Allow sufficient time for system operation to resume before attempting to use the system. If your system uses the Suspend mode "Hibernate", it will take longer to resume operation as compared to using Suspend-to-RAM mode. Time is needed to read data from the hard disk drive.
All programs resume at the point where execution stopped when system operation was suspended.

improperly. Handle the pen with care.
The following list contains guidelines for proper pen handling:
Do not gesture with the pen.
Do not use the pen as a pointer.
Do not tap the pen on surfaces other than the screen of the Tablet PC.
Do not try to turn the thumb grip on the pen. The thumb grip is designed for inserting
and removing the pen from the pen garage and for attaching a pen tether.
Never store the pen with the tip bearing the weight of the pen (e.g., sitting tip down in a pencil cup). Storing the pen tip down could distort the internal mechanism over a period of time (especially in higher temperatures), causing the tip to act as if it is always depressed. To avoid damage, the pen should be stored in the pen garage when not in use.

Further information about the battery charging time can be found in chapter "Technical data".
Also note the following with respect to charging the battery:
You can use the system, suspend system operation, or shut down and turn off the system without interrupting the charging process. However, using the system while the battery is charging will cause the battery to charge at a slower rate.
The Tablet PC battery uses Lithium ion battery cells which have no "memory effect". You do not need to discharge the battery before you begin charging.
Removing and installing the battery
The battery can be removed from the Tablet PC and swapped with a charged battery. The discharged battery can then be charged in an external charger if one is available.
Select one of the following options for prepare for removing the battery:
If a charged battery is available, you can suspend system operation. A built-in buffer
battery will maintain the system in Suspend-to-RAM mode for about 5 minutes while the battery is removed. This allows time for replacement with a charged battery.
If a charged battery is not available, save your work and close all running programs, then
shut down the system or initiate Hibernate mode.

Tips for conserving battery power
Battery life is dependent upon the operating system, power settings, and applications in use. You can extend the charge life of your battery by conserving battery power:
Use an external power source such as the power adapter whenever the system is docked to a Tablet Dock.
Shut down the system if you won’t be using the system for an extended period of time.
Use energy options of the operating system to help you conserve power.
If you do not use the Tablet PC for a short time, you can minimise and/or switch off the screen
lighting according to model in order to save energy.
Buffer battery
When installed in the Tablet PC, the battery provides power to some system components - even when the system is in the OFF mode. When the battery is removed, power is supplied to these components by a buffer battery that is built into the Tablet PC.
The buffer battery is not designed for long-term operation. To maintain the buffer battery properly, observe the following measures:
The buffer battery function is disabled if Wake On LAN is enabled in the BIOS Setup.
i
To prevent draining the buffer battery, always store the system with a charged battery
The system arrives with the buffer battery in a discharged state. Charge the buffer battery sufficiently before relying upon it to support the system in the event of battery removal.
installed.
If the buffer battery becomes drained, it takes approximately 8 hours for it to be fully recharged.
The buffer battery charges when the power adapter is connected. The buffer battery charges from the battery only when the system is in the ON mode.

telephone numbers are contained in the "Help Desk" supplement. Passwords are not covered by your warranty and a charge will be made for assistance.
With the Kensington MicroSaver you can protect your Tablet PC from theft. For this reason your Tablet PC is equipped with a device for the Kensington MicroSaver. The Kensington MicroSaver is available as an accessory.
Security Panel (only under Windows)
The security panel enables you to protect your Tablet PC from unauthorised use with a password. When a Security Panel password is activated, the Tablet PC will not start without the correct insertion of a password. The password is entered before the BIOS is read out and the hardware activated.
The password is requested from all suspend and resume modes. This ensures a high level of security even with the energy-saving mode activated.
BIOS password protection
You can protect you personal data from unauthorised access with various passwords. By combining these different options, you can achieve maximum protection for your system.
Password protection for the BIOS setup
With the Supervisor password you prevent unauthorised opening of the BIOS Setup, and with it access to important system settings. In the BIOS Setup you can also activate protection for the operating system and your hard disk.
A26391-K145-Z120-1-7619, edition 3 37
Page 46
Security functions
Password protection for the operating system
With corresponding settings in the BIOS Setup you can block starting of the operating system. Only those who know the supervisor or user password can access the system.
Password protection for your hard disk
By activating the hard disk protection in the BIOS Setup you prevent unauthorised access to the hard disk drive. The hard disk password is checked internally during each system start-up and ensures that the hard disk can only be used in conjunction with the related device.
SmartCard reader
A SmartCard reader is integrated in your Tablet PC. You can use a SmartCard (optional accessory) as a particularly secure alternative to password protection or as an addition to password protection.
Using Trusted Platform Module (optional)
A Trusted Platform Module (TPM), a special security chip, can optionally be integrated into your device. The TPM functions like a permanently installed SmartCard. However, the TPM is not linked to a user like a SmartCard, but instead to a hardware system. The TPM contains a unique code. As a result, the TPM is used for the clear identification and authentication of the device.
Requirement: The supervisor password is present.
To use the TPM, you must activate the TPM in the BIOS Setup. The TPM is activated by selecting the Enabled entry for Security Chip in the Security menu in the Security Chip Setting submenu.
If you have activated the TPM, the menu item Clear Security Chip appears. You can use this menu item to delete the key in the TPM. However, you can then no longer access the data that you encrypted with the key.
When the TPM is activated, together with the BIOS it checks the trustworthiness of all hardware components.
For example, with the TPM activated together with software that has TPM capability, data can be generated which can only be read or run on this Convertible PC. The support of security protocols, such as SSL (Secure Socket Layer) for Internet connections, IPSec (LAN encryption), S-MIME (email encryption, WLAN encryption and others) is also possible.
On the supplied TPM software CD/DVD you will find software that, in conjunction with the TPM, enhances the security of your system. Information on using the TPM and the related software is provided on the TPM software CD/DVD.
If you use TPM and the software on the TPM software CD/DVD, we strongly recommend
i
that you use the emergency restoration function and create a medium (e.g. floppy disk, network drive) for restoration in emergencies.
You can only re-access your encrypted data using the medium you created for emergency restoration if, for example, a security key is lost due to hardware faults.

SmartCards
SmartCards are not supplied as standard equipment. You can use all SmartCards that comply with the ISO standard 7816-1, -2, -3 and -4. These SmartCards are available from various manufacturers. A SmartCard is also included in the "Mobile Secure IT Suite", that you can order as an accessory.
With the appropriate software you can use your SmartCard as an alternative to password protection, but also as a digital signature, for encrypting your e-mails or for homebanking.
We recommend that you always use two SmartCards. Always keep one of the SmartCards in a safe place if you carry the other SmartCard with you.
The SmartCard can only be used with a PIN so protection is maintained even when the
i
SmartCard is lost. The SICRYPT SmartCard, that is included in the "Mobile Secure IT Suite", is locked after an incorrect PIN is input three times, to ensure maximum security for you.
The first time you use your SmartCard you must enter the preset PIN provided by the SmartCard manufacturer or your system administrator.

Care and maintenance
This chapter gives you pointers on how to care for and maintain your Tablet PC.
Protecting the display screen
The Tablet PC is designed to provide you with years of service. Using a screen protector will help ensure that the screen remains as clear as possible. When installed, the screen protector becomes a durable, replaceable writing surface that protects the display screen from abrasion.
Please contact your dealer for additional screen protectors.
During normal use of the Tablet PC, small particles from the environment can become
!
To install a new screen protector on your Tablet PC:
embedded in the pen tip and scratch the screen. To prevent scratching the screen, ensure that a screen protector is installed before using your Tablet PC. The warranty does not cover a scratched screen.
If a screen protector is already installed on the display screen, remove it before installing the
new screen protector. The screen protector is held onto the display screen surface by a thin strip of adhesive around the edges. There is a angled corner in one corner of the screen protector. It allows you to slide your fingernail under the screen protector for easy removal.
Clean the display by wiping the screen surface gently using a soft cotton cloth dampened with
isopropyl alcohol. Ensure that all residue has been removed from the screen before applying a new screen protector.
The Tablet PC is not waterproof. Do not pour liquids on the system or wash it with a
!
heavily soaked cloth.
Do not place items on the top of the display, or damage may occur.

Troubleshooting and tips
In the following sections possible solutions to problems that may occur are described. If you are experiencing a problem with your Tablet PC that you cannot solve by taking the actions described, contact your sales partner or hotline/help desk for further assistance.
System will not resume operation
If the system will not resume operation after system operation has been suspended, check the following possible causes:
The battery may either be defective, or discharged to the critically low level. When the battery reaches the critically low level, the system is forced into Suspend-to-RAM mode to avoid a total system power failure. To correct this problem, either connect an external power supply (such as the power adapter), or install a charged battery in the Tablet PC.
The system may be at the critical thermal limit. System operation cannot be resumed until the device cools off to the permissible temperature. Move the Tablet PC to a cooler location.
Display screen is blank or difficult to read
If the display screen of your Tablet PC appears blank or is unreadable, confirm that the system is running (the power indicator is displayed on the status display), and check the following:
The system brightness may be set too low, causing the screen to appear too dark. To change brightness, press the Fn button twice to open the Fujitsu Menu. This menu contains the tab for changing the brightness.
The video timeout may have expired. Tap on the display screen to reactivate the display. Note that this is a normal, power-saving feature.
Cursor is not tracking pen
If the cursor on the screen appears to be misaligned with the pen or is not accurately tracking the pen, calibrate the pen.
To calibrate, please run the Tablet and Pen Settings function in the Control Panel.

Troubleshooting and tips
Infrared data transfer is not working
If you are experiencing problems transferring data over the infrared receiver of the device, note the following:
Can the infrared receiver on the Tablet PC "see" the infrared interface on the other device? A direct line-of-sight path must exist between the infrared receiver on the Tablet PC and the infrared interface on the other device.
The distance between the two devices must not be more than approximately 3 feet.
The viewing angle from the infrared receiver on the Tablet PC must not be more than 15
degrees from a centre line between the infrared receiver on the Tablet PC and the infrared interface on the other device.
The device with which you are trying to communicate must be compliant with the IrDA Standard Revision 1.1 (or 1.0).
It may be necessary for both computers to be using the same network connection protocols.
Device is not responding to the pen
If your Tablet PC does not respond to the pen, connect an external keyboard to the system to see if it responds to keyboard commands.
If the system doesn't respond to a keyboard, the application or system may have crashed. It may be necessary to reboot the system.
If the system responds to a keyboard but not to a pen, contact your sales partner or hotline/help desk.
Speaker/headphone volume is too low
If the volume on your Tablet PC speaker or external headphones is too low, check the following:
Ensure that the speaker (or headphone output if using headphones) is enabled. To do so, open the Control Panel and double-click on the Sounds and Audio Devices icon. Select the appropriate tab and deselect the mute box (if it is selected). If you still have no sound, increase the volume carefully using the volume slider.
Press the Fn button twice to open the Fujitsu Menu. This menu contains the tab for adjusting the volume.
Ensure that the mute box in the system volume control (accessible from the system tray) is not set.
Ensure that any volume control in your audio software is set to an audible level.
