Shutting down the system
Follow these steps to shut down and turn off your system:
Ê If system operation has been suspended, resume system operation. See the "Res um i ng
operation" section i n this chapter for detai l s.
Ê Save your work and close all running programs.
Ê Choose Shut Down from the Windows Start menu.
Ê Carry out the command.
The system is now in the OFF mode.
Suspending system operation
The Tablet PC allows you t o suspend the system operation without cl osing programs or exiting t h e
operating system. Use this feature to conserve battery power when a system shutdown is not
practical or when the bat t e ry needs to be changed.
If you have set your system to turn Shut down from the Power Options utility in the Control
i
Panel, the following procedure will not be pos sible, since pressi ng t he button shuts the
system down rather than suspending it. To change the power options, go to Start - ControlPanel - Power Options.
To suspend system operation:
Ê Press the On/Resume/Suspend button, or carry out the S t andby command from your
operating system or power management program.
If your system is configured to suspend operation using Hibernate mode, a message is display ed
while data is saved to your hard disk.
If you are replacing the battery, wait until system operation is suspended and the power
!
indicator is blinking before you remove the bat t ery. Failure to do so could result in loss of
your unsaved data. (Not e t hat if the Resume On LAN function is enabl ed i n t he BIOS Setup,
you should not remove the battery unless the system is shut down. When Resume ON
LAN is enabled, the buffer battery is dis abl ed i n order to optimise battery life.)
The power indicator either fl ashes (Suspend-to-RAM) or is not displayed (Hibernat e) when
system operation is suspended, depending on how y our system is configured. At this
point, programs that were runni ng are stopped, active data is saved, and the system
enters one of two diff erent l ow-power modes, or suspend modes, as explained in the
following paragraphs
22 - EnglishA26391-K129-Z121-1-7619
Page 29
Using the Tablet PC
Observe the power indicat or i n the status displ ay to determine which suspend mode your system is
using.
−Flashing: Suspend-to-RAM-Modus
In this mode, ac tive data is sav ed by maintaining power to RAM whi l e m ost other system
components are powered off. The Battery Gauge icon indicates the battery charge lev el.
−Is not displayed (dark): Hibernate mode
In this mode, ac tive data is st ored on t he hard disk drive. Power draw is reduced to the
same level used in OFF mode.
When the system is in Hibernate mode, the battery gauge icon is not visible. In thi s mode,
there is no danger of losing data if battery power is l ost.
Refer to the "Resuming operation" section in t hi s chapter to resume system operation. Also, note
the following with regard t o suspending system operation:
• You can remove the battery while the system is in Suspend-to-RAM or Hibernate mode in
order to install a charged bat tery. To prevent losi ng unsaved data, wait until system operation
has suspended before you remove the battery.
Note that after you rem ove the battery, y ou have approximately fi ve minutes to replace i t with a
new battery or to plug in a power s uppl y before the buffer battery is depleted.
• Your system may be configured to suspend operation automatically aft er a peri od of inactivity.
• Your system may be configured to enter Hibernate mode automatically after a period of time in
Suspend-to-RAM mode.
• The system uses a small amount of battery power when in Suspend-to-RA M m ode. Eventually,
the battery will become fully dis charged.
If you will not be using the system for an extended period of time, shut down the system
i
rather than using Suspend-t o-RAM mode.
• If the battery charge drops to a Low Battery warning level while the system is running, the
system will beep periodically. If t hi s occurs, sus pend system operati on, shut down the system,
or attach an external power source, such as t he power adapt er, to the Tablet PC.
• If the battery charge drops to a critically low level while the system is running, the system is
forced into a pre-selec ted mode (Suspend-to-RAM or Hibernate). If this oc curs, you must ei ther
install a charged battery, or connect an appropriate external power source such as the power
adapter before you can resume system operation. (If the battery charge drops to a critic al l y low
level while the system is in Suspend-to-RAM mode, the system stays in Suspend-to-RAM
mode until power is rest ored or totally dissipated.)
• Suspending system operation interrupts data communicati ons. Therefore, some programs m ay
block the system from suspending to prevent an interruption.
A26391-K129-Z121-1-7619English - 23
Page 30
Using the Tablet PC
•The suspend function of the On/Resume/Suspend button may be disabled to prevent
accidental interruption. If this i s the case, press i ng the On/Resume/Suspend button will not
suspend system operation as desc ri bed here. (In this case, suspend mode can only be
achieved using the system software.)
Contact your authorised sales partner if your system configuration is not suitable.
• If your system is equipped with a PC card that allows you to connect to a wired or wireles s
network, you may be l ogged off the network after a peri od of inactivity while system operation
is suspended. Contact your network administrator for details on l og-of f parameters for your
network.
Resuming operation
To resume system operation (from either Suspend-to-RAM or Hibernate mode), pres s the
On/Resume/Suspend button.
• From Suspend-to-RAM mode
Status indicators indicate that the system mode is changing. It may take approximately one
minute before the system returns to the ON mode and system operation resumes. Note that
the display turns on shortly before the pen becom es active due to the power-up s equences
observed by the system.
• From Hibernate mode
Active data is read from the hard disk drive. The system returns to the ON mode after a short
time.
Note that power to several system components must be restored before system operation
!
resumes. Allow sufficient time for system operation to resume before attempting to use
the system.
If your system uses the Suspend mode "Hibernate", it will take longer to resume operation
as compared to using S uspend-to-RAM mode. Time is needed to read data from the hard
disk drive.
• Use the system as you normally would once system operation resumes.
All programs resume at the point where execution s topped when system operation was suspended.

If the battery c harge is 90% or higher when you connect DC power, the battery will not charge. This
prevents the battery from being overcharged.
Look at the Battery Gauge icon in the Status display to determi ne t he percent of charge in the
battery. See the " Status display " section in the "Getting started" chapt er f or a description of the
Battery Gauge icon.
As long as the power source remains connected t o t he Tabl et PC, the charging proces s continues
until the battery charge reaches 100%.
Further information about t he battery charging time can be found in chapter "Techni cal data".
Also note the following with respect to charging the battery:
• You can use the system, suspend system operation, or shut down and turn off the system
without interrupting t he charging process. Howev er, using the system while the battery is
charging will cause the battery to charge at a slower rate.

Page 35
Using the Tablet PC
• As noted in the procedure abov e, the system will not begin charging the battery pack i f the
battery pack c harge l evel is 90% or higher when the system is initially connected to external
power source. This prevents the battery from bei ng overcharged.
• The Tablet PC battery uses Lithium ion battery cells which have no "m em ory effect." Y ou do
not need to discharge the bat tery before you begin charging.
Removing and installing the battery
The battery can be removed f rom the Tablet PC and swapped with a charged bat tery. The
discharged battery can then be charged in an external c harger i f one is available.
Ê Select one of the following options f or prepare for removing the battery :
−If a charged battery is avail abl e, you can suspend system operation. A buil t-in buffer
battery will maintain the system in Suspend-to-RAM mode for about 5 minutes while t he
battery is remov ed. This allows tim e f or repl acement with a charged batt ery.
−If a charged battery is not avai l abl e, save your work and cl ose all running programs, then
shut down the system or initiate Hibernate mode.
−Plug in an external DC power source.

normally.
Tips for conserving battery power
Battery life i s dependent upon the operating system, power settings, and applications in use. You
can extend the charge li fe of your battery by conserving battery power:
• Use an external power sourc e such as the power adapter whenever t he system is docked to a
Tablet Dock.
• Suspend system operation if you know that you won’t be using the system for a while.
• Shut down the system if you won’t be using the system for an extended period of time.
• Use energy options of the operating system to help you conserve power.
• If you do not use the Tabl et PC for a short time, you can minimise or s wi t ch off the screen
lighting on Model ST41X1 to save energy. During work as well, you do not need to use the
screen lighting under favourable lighting conditi ons (in rooms and in the open).
Buffer battery
When installed in the Tablet PC, the battery prov i des power to some system components - even
when the system is in the OFF mode. When the battery is removed, power is s uppl i ed to these
components by a buffer battery that is bui l t i nto the Tablet PC.
The buffer battery is not designed for long-term operati on. To maintain the buffer bat t ery properly,
observe the following measures:
The buffer battery function is disabled if Wake On LAN is enabl ed i n t he BIOS Setup.
i
• To prevent draining the buffer battery, always store the system with a charged battery install ed.
• If the buffer batt ery becomes drained, it t akes approximately 8 hours for it to be fully recharged.
The system arrives with the buffer battery in a discharged state. Charge the buffer battery
sufficient l y before relying upon it to s upport the system in the event of battery removal.

Wireless LAN
Your Tablet PC can be upgraded with an i ntegrated wireless LAN modul e (PRISM Wireless LA N) as
an option. The PRISM Configuration Utility is provided for confi guration and status dis pl ays of the
network card.
This chapter describes how t o ins tall the drivers and the configuration ut ilit y and how to make
settings for your wireless LAN.
Wireless network as per IEEE 802.11 standard
The "PRISM Wireless LAN" network card operates in accordance with the IEEE 802.11 standard.
The 2.4 GHz ISM frequenc y band is used as a comm uni cations medium. The wirel ess networks
operating in accordance with 802.11 can easily be c onnected to existi ng E thernet networks. Wit h
the exception of a f ew addi tional parameters, wireless network cards that operate in accordance
with 802.11 are one system with a normal Ethernet card. This means that you can use all protocols
via a 802.11 wireless network just as with a cable-connected Ethernet (IP, IPX, NetBIOS,...). The
only difference is that you need not lay cables between the computers. The number of all wireles s
LAN stations that c an reach each other directly is generally referred to as a cell. The IEEE standard
offers two operating modes - the adhoc mode (peer-to-peer) and the inf rastructure mode.
Adhoc mode
A wireless LAN in t he adhoc mode, also called peer-to-peer mode, consist s of a single clos ed cell.
Adhoc wireless net works result when a workgroup c om es together with its systems and would like to
interconnect these for data exchange. Any number of systems can be added to this type of network
and can leave it again.
So that several adhoc wireless networks do not interfere with each ot her i n radi o traffic, there is a
unique network name, the SSID (Service Set Identifier). The SSI D i s used for addressing s o t hat a
data packet can always be assigned to a certain cell.
If you want to join an existing cell, you require the network name (SSID), which you enter i n t he
settings for the network card. The driver searches for a wireless network with this I D duri ng start-up.
When the driver has found a wireless network, it connects to it and you can communicate wi th the
systems in this wireless network. If two cells are very close together, the channels of t hese networks
should be 4 to 5 channels apart .
Infrastructure mode
In the infrastruc ture mode, a base stati on, referred to as an Acces sPoint, exists in addition to the
mobile stations . In the infrastruc t ure m ode the AccessPoi nt assumes the function of a "guard". In
contrast to the adhoc mode, each system must log on to the AccessPoint before it is allowed to
exchange data in the cel l .
Another task of the AccessPoi nt is the connecti on of the cells with a cable-connected Ethernet . As
due to the logon requirement, t he AccessPoint knows at all times exactly whic h stations are on the
radio side, it can decide exactly which data must be sent t o i t and which don't. This process is also
referred to as bridging.
A26391-K129-Z121-1-7619English - 35
Page 42
Wireless LAN
The range of a wireless network can be increased with sev eral AccessPoints. The AccessPoints
have the same SSI D for this purpose. When a system enters the wireless net, it searches among
the reachable AccessPoints for t he one wi th the strongest si gnal and l ogs on there. Two systems
logged on to different AccessPoints communicate wit h each other in this way, even when they are
not within direct radio reach. If a system also continuously monitors the radio situation after the
logon, it can detec t how the signals from an AccessPoint become weaker and those of another
become stronger, and can then log on to the stronger one without the user noticing. Thi s procedure
is referred to as roaming.

Profile NameA profile is a col l ection of parameters f or t he network card. If y ou select
an existing profil e, all parameters are set as defined in the profile. Cl i ck
on the arrow next to the Profile Name field to display the available profiles.
The Default profile is provided as a standard and contains the param eters
that were configured during the i nstallation. You c an change the profile at
any time after the i n stallation.
You can create an additional profile by entering the name in the ProfileName field and then changing the parameters as desired. If y ou want to
subscribe to dif ferent wireless network s, you can create dif ferent profiles
for them.
Network NameThe network name is the SSID (Serv i ce Set Identifier) used by the
AccessPoi nt and systems to identify a wireless LAN. Your network card
searches the avail abl e channels for a partner (AccessPoint or system)
with the same SSID. The network card then attempts to connect to this
AccessPoint or system. To change an SSID, mark the SS ID and enter a
new SSID. If you system cannot establish a connec tion to an
AccessP oi nt in the vicinit y, check whether t he S SID is entered correctly.
If you use the entry ANY, then your system connects to any A ccessPoint.
The AccessPoi nt must then be configured so that it permits any
subscriber (no access restrictions).
Network TypeThe network card can operate eit her i n the adhoc mode (802.11 Adhoc) or
in the infrastructure mode (Infrastructure). Click on the arrow next to t he
Network Type field and select the mode.
AdHoc ChannelSpecifies the channel in the adhoc mode. Click on the arrow next to the
field Adhoc Channel until the channel appears. In the infrastructure mode
this field cannot be selected, as the channels are automatical l y specified
by the Acces sPoint.
Power Save EnabledThe IEEE standard 802.11 supports a power s av e mode. Activating this
mode can same a great deal of power and is of interest f or batteryoperated systems. However, the power save mode also results in a lower
transmission and reception speed on the wireles s LAN.
Transmit RateSpecifies the transmi ssion rate with whic h t he network card transmits and
receives data. Cl i ck on the arrow next to t he Transmit Rate field to see the
possible transmi ssion rates.
We only recommend set t i ng Fully Automatic. The network card selects the
highest possible transmission rate for reliable communicat i ons. The fixed
transmission rates are usually only used in test environments.

Care and maintenance
This chapter gives you pointers on how to care for and mai ntain your Tablet PC.
Protecting the display screen
The Tablet PC is designed to provide you with years of service. Using a screen protector will help
ensure that the sc reen rem ai ns as clear as possi bl e. When installed, the screen protector becomes
a durable, replaceable writing surface that protects the display s creen from abrasion.
Please contact your dealer for additional sc reen protectors.
During normal use of the Tablet P C, small particles from the environment c an become
!
To install a new screen prot ector on your Tablet PC:
embedded in the pen tip and scrat ch the screen. To prevent scratc hi ng the screen, ensure
that a screen protector is installed bef ore using your Tablet PC. The warranty does not
cover a scratc hed screen.
Ê If a screen protector is already installed on the display screen, remove it before installing the
new screen protector.
The screen protector is held onto the display s creen surface by a thin strip of adhesive around
the edges. There is a angled c orner i n one corner of the screen protector. It allows y ou to slide
your fingernail under the screen protector for easy rem oval.
Ê Clean the display by wiping the screen surface gently usi ng a soft cotton c l ot h dampened with
isopropyl alcohol. Ensure that all residue has been removed from the sc reen before applying a
new screen protector.
The Tablet PC is not waterproof. Do not pour liqui ds on the system or wash it with a
!
heavily soaked c loth.
Do not place items on the top of the display, or damage may occur.

Avoiding overheating
The Tablet PC monitors its internal temperature. As the internal temperat ure approaches the
tolerable limits of heat-sensitiv e components, system functions are automatically limited or turned
off to prevent damage.
To avoid overheating the Tablet PC, do not obstruct t he ventilation slots of the device.
Troubleshooting
In the following sections possible solutions to problems that may occur are described. If you are
experiencing a problem with your Tablet PC that you c annot solve by taki ng t he actions described,
contact your s al es partner or hotline/help desk for further assistance.
System will not resume operation
If the system will not resume operation after system operation has been suspended, c heck the
following possibl e causes:
• The battery may eit her be def ective, or disc harged to the criticall y low level. When the batt ery
reaches the critically low level, the system is forced into Suspend-to-RAM mode to avoid a t otal
system power failure. To correct this problem, either connect an external power supply (s uch
as the power adapter), or inst al l a charged battery in the Tablet P C.
• The system may be at the critical thermal limit. System operation cannot be resumed until the
device cools of f to the permissibl e t emperature. Move the Tablet P C to a cooler location.
