1Introduction

3970-2x Service/Console Processor

The 3970-2x Service/Console Processor is a mandatory expansion feature for the S1xx
Business Server. In conjunction with the service processor it supports the operation,
monitoring, troubleshooting and maintenance of the business server, as well as
TELESERVICE.

The 3970-2x Service/Console Processor is available in the following housing variants:

● tower (3970-20 SKP)

● rack module (3970-29 SKP)

The SKP variants are supplemented by:
– color monitor (3970L-30, -31, -40)

– keyboard (3970L-10)
– mouse (3970L-5)

Target group Introduction

The SKP variants 3970-20 and 3970-29 are connected to the S1xx Business Server via
channel type S.

The 3970-2x Service/Console Processor also enables remote operation of the S1xx
Business Server via LAN (including a WAN connection - X.25/ISDN - for routers). In this
case, operation is handled via the SKP operator terminal 3970L-31LG for German­speaking areas and 3970L-31LI for English-speaking areas. The connection for LAN
operation is to the second LAN controller of the basic unit 3970-2x SKP.

Native operation of BS2000/OSD by way of the 3970-2x Service/Console Processor allows
up to six virtual screens (consoles for SINIX, SVP, $DIALOG).

The VMOP function diskettes (3970V-VM4, - VM8, -VM16) enable operation of the VM2000
monitor system and the guest systems. Here, each console may be allocated specifically to
a particular system, or there can also be central consoles for up to six guest systems each.
In addition, system-specific logging is supported, with the option of setting the archiving
strategy (size and number of logging files) separately for each system.

The VMOP function diskettes also allow system-specific support through the 3925 ATOP.
A streamer can optionally be incorporated in the 3970-2x Service/Console Processor. This

can be used to back up the logging files of the programs KVP, TSB2000 and TELESERVICE
(UNIX).

1.1 Target group

This manual provides all the information you need to operate the hardware of the 3970-2x
Service/Console Processor. It is therefore intended for use by operators and system admin­istrators.

1.2 Summary of contents

The present Operating Manual deals exclusively with the hardware of the 3970-2x Service/
Console Processor, as required for system operation. Refer to the documentation supplied
for information on peripherals (such as monitors).

The SINIX-2000 V7.5 operating system is described in the "SINIX-2000 V7.5/V8.0" User
Guide [1].

Operation of the S1xx Business Server, to which the 3970-2x Service/Console Processor
is connected for system operation, is described in the "S1xx Business Server" Operating
Manuals [2]-[5].

2 Important information

The contents of this chapter include safety information which must be observed when
working with the 3970-2x SKP. The manufacturer-supplied details provide further useful
information.

2.1 Safety information

Observe the safety information given in the "Safety and Ergonomics" manual, as

well as the following safety instructions.

● The ON/OFF switch does not disconnect the 3970-2x SKP from the mains voltage.

● The CD-ROM drive contains a light-emitting diode (LED), classification as per

IEC 825-1:1993:LASER CLASS 1, and should not therefore be opened.

Ê Turn the key (1) to open the lock. The door remains closed.
Ê If you only want to access the ON/OFF switch and the available drives, grip the drive

cover by the handle and pull it first towards you (2a) and then in a downward direction
(2b). You can leave the key in the lock.

Ê If you need to access the drive modules of the server, you have to open the door (3).

The yellow indicator is lit when the CD-ROM drive is being accessed.

The green indicator is lit when data is transferred via an SCSI channel.

3 Status indicator

The green status indicator is lit when the 3970-2x SKP has been switched on.

4 ON/OFF switch

The ON/OFF switch switches the 3970-2x SKP on and off. If it has been switched off,
the green status indicator is lit (3).

The ON/OFF switch does not disconnect the 3970-2x SKP from the mains

voltage. To completely disconnect it from the mains voltage, the mains plug on
the 3970-2x SKP must be pulled out.

5 Chipcard reader display

The chipcard reader is not supported.

6 Display: floppy disk drive active / not active

This indicator is lit when the floppy disk drive is being accessed.

7 Display: hard disk drive active / not active

The green indicator is lit when the hard disk drive is being accessed.

8 Hard disk error display

The yellow indicator is lit when the hard disk drive is defective.

Ê Press the ON/OFF pushbutton (1).
When the 3970-2x SKP has been switched on, the green status indicator (2) is lit. Immedi-

ately after being switched on, the 3970-2x SKP performs a self-test.

If, once the 3970-2x SKP has been switched on, only flickering stripes appear on

!

the screen, switch the monitor off and notify the Customer Service Department.

The 3970-2x SKP is ready for operation if the SINIX welcome window appears on the
screen. If this window does not appear, something has gone wrong when powering up the
SKP. Restart the powering up procedure. If this also proves unsuccessful, notify the
Customer Service Department.

Following a power failure, the system powers up again automatically.

The 3970-2x SKP should not be switched off while processing is still running, as this

can result in data being lost.

Ê Activate the SINIX screen.
Ê Enter the following command:

init 0

or press the ON/OFF pushbutton.

The operating system is then powered down in the proper manner and the 3970-2x SKP is
deactivated. The green status indicator (2) is extinguished.

The ON/OFF switch does not disconnect the 3970-2x SKP from the mains voltage.

To completely disconnect it from the mains voltage, the mains plug on the 3970-2x
SKP must be pulled out.

CDs, floppy disks and administrator and maintenance information (e.g. maintenance
stickers, SKP network address) can be kept in a secure and handy location in the tray on
the front of the server.

Switch the 3970-2x SKP off and remove the mains plug from the grounded power

socket.
The interior of the housing of the 3970-2x SKP should only be cleaned by autho-

rized specialist personnel.
Do not use scouring powder or cleaning materials which contain plastic solvents

when cleaning the 3970-2x SKP.
Take care that no liquids get into the interior of the equipment
Make sure that the ventilation slots on the 3970-2x SKP and on the monitor remain

unobstructed.

The surface of the 3970-2x SKP and of the monitor may also be cleaned using a dry cloth.
If the surface is particularly dirty, a damp cloth that has been moistened in water containing
a mild cleaning agent and well wrung out should be used.

The outsides of the keyboard and the mouse can be cleaned with disinfectant wipes.

4.2 Cleaning the rack

5.1 Operating the floppy disk drive

When handling floppy disks, observe the manufacturer’s instructions.

Cleaning disks must not be used to clean the floppy disk drives in the server!
Any cleaning disk would destroy the read/write heads in the floppy disk drive within
a mere 20 seconds.

Status indicator

The status indicator (3) flashes when a CD is being inserted. It goes dark when the drive is
ready to read.

If the status indicator does not go dark after a CD has been inserted but continues

to flash, the CD may well be damaged or dirty.

The status indicator is permanently lit when the CD-ROM drive is being accessed.

Removing a CD

When the status indicator on the CD-ROM drive is lit, this means that the drive is

being accessed. Wait until the status indicator goes dark before pressing the Insert/
Remove button.

Ê Press the Insert/Remove button.

The CD drawer opens.

Ê Remove the CD from the CD drawer.
Ê Press the Insert/Remove button, or press gently against the CD drawer.

The CD drawer closes.

If the CD drawer does not open, check whether the CD-ROM drive has been locked

by means of a software command. If this is not the case, it means that the drive is
defective and the CD must be removed manually.

Manual removal

If the power fails or the drive is damaged, the CD can be removed manually.

Ê Switch the 3970-2x SKP off.
Ê Use a piece of wire (a paper clip, for example) to press firmly on the button for manual

removal:

The CD drawer is unlocked and can be pulled out.

How to handle CDs

Only ever touch CDs at the edge and avoid leaving fingerprints. Never touch the

!

surface of a CD.
Always keep CDs in their sleeves or cases. In this way, you will prevent them from

becoming dusty, scratched or otherwise damaged.
Protect CDs from contamination and do not leave them in a position where they are

exposed to direct sunlight.
Store CDs horizontally. Avoid storing CDs in places that are excessively warm or

humid.
Protect the CD-ROM drive from strong vibrations. The drive stops if it is subjected

to strong vibrations while running.
Open the CD drawer only if you wish to insert or remove a CD.
Never place objects on the open CD drawer, and never exert downward pressure

on the open CD drawer.

When the system unit is powered up, the streamer performs a self-test, during which time
the indicators are also lit or flashing. The meaning of the indicators during normal operation
is as follows:

● The “Ready” indicator (2)

– is dark when there is no tape cartridge loaded,
– is lit green when there is a tape cartridge loaded and the drive is ready.

● The “Activity” indicator (3)

– is dark when the drive is not active,
– flashes green when the tape is in motion, when a tape cartridge is currently being

ejected, or when a cleaning operation is being performed.

● The “Fault” indicator (4)

– is dark when no fault condition exists,
– is lit amber when a cleaning operation is required or currently being performed,
– flashes if a drive fault or a tape cartridge fault has occurred.

How to handle magnetic tape cartridges

Although magnetic tape cartridges require no special maintenance, you should

!

nevertheless observe a few basic rules:
Never subject the cartridges to excessive temperature levels and do not leave them

in a position where they are exposed to direct sunlight.
Avoid using or storing cartridges under excessively humid conditions or in a dusty

environment.
Avoid the proximity of strong magnetic fields.
Do not remove a cartridge from the drive and do not power the 3970-2x SKP down

while a cartridge is being read or written to.
Always leave the touch guard in place over the opening for the read/write head.
Never touch the magnetic tape.
The conditions for the storage of cartridges should be similar to the conditions appli-

cable to operation.
Store cartridges on edge wherever possible.

Inserting a magnetic tape cartridge

Take care when inserting the magnetic tape cartridge to ensure that the cartridge

label is facing upwards. The side where the magnetic tape is visible must be on the
right when the cartridge is inserted into the drive.

Ê Push the magnetic tape cartridge slowly into the drive until it is drawn in by the loading

mechanism.
The “Ready” indicator on the streamer lights up.

Removing a magnetic tape cartridge

Ê Press the Remove button.

The command currently being executed is terminated and buffered data is written back
to the tape. Depending on the application, the tape cartridge in the drive is rewound.
This operation may take up to three minutes. The cartridge is then ejected by the
unloading mechanism.

Ê Remove the magnetic tape cartridge from the drive.

The Remove button can be locked by means of an SCSI command (Prevent Media

!

Removal).

Using the write-protection facility

If you wish to protect a magnetic tape cartridge against being accidentally overwritten or
deleted, you can activate the write-protection facility.

When write protection has been activated for a magnetic tape cartridge, the system can
only read the data on the cartridge, but cannot overwrite or delete it.

On the magnetic tape cartridge you will find a screw and an arrow mark. By turning the
screw with a screwdriver, you can activate/deactivate the write-protection facility.

Lock open symbol: When the arrow points to this symbol, it is possible to write to the

cartridge.

Lock closed symbol: When the arrow points to this symbol, the cartridge is write-

protected.

Cleaning

The read/write heads of the streamer must be cleaned regularly in order to guarantee error­free data processing.

Under no circumstances should sharp objects be used when cleaning the magnetic

head, as this could be easily damaged.
Use a cleaning set consisting of a cleaning cartridge, sponges, cleaning fluid and

plastic tweezers.

The interval between cleaning operations depends primarily on how often the streamer is
used. Observe the following general rules:

Period of operation Cleaning

Continuous operation (8 hours per day) daily

Once a day (e.g. for data backup) weekly

Once a week (e.g. for data backup) monthly

Even if you use the streamer less frequently than indicated above, the read/write

heads should be cleaned at least once every three months.

6 Troubleshooting

System cannot be started

Ê Contact our Customer Service Department.

Status indicator not lit after powering up

This may have the following causes:

● Mains voltage supply fault

● Power supply module has been overloaded

Ê Contact our Customer Service Department.

3970-2x SKP powers itself down

● Fault in the power supply module: The status indicator for the defective power supply

module is not lit.

● The PDA management facility has detected a fault.

Ê Contact our Customer Service Department.

Screen remains dark

If the screen remains dark, this may have the following causes:

● Monitor is switched off.

Ê Switch the monitor on.

● Screen is blanked.

Ê Press any key on the keyboard.

● Brightness control is set to dark.

Ê Turn up the monitor brightness control. Refer to the operating manual for the

monitor for detailed information.

● Power cable or monitor cable is not connected.

Flickering stripes appear on the screen

Time and date incorrect

The changeover to summer time is handled automatically by the SINIX-2000 operating
system.

Ê You can set winter time and/or the date in the operating system under SYSADM system

administration in the System Configuration menu.

If the time and date are repeatedly incorrect after powering down and up again, the
lithium battery must be replaced:

7 Disposal and recycling

Your 3970-2x SKP system is designed to last. Both its expansion options and, above all, the
quality of the product guarantee that it will have a long service life.

There is no rest for developers, however. In future it will be necessary to process volumes
of data that we can scarcely even dream of today. Requirements for memory, speed and
new designs are constantly increasing. There will therefore come a time when you will need
to replace your 3970-2x SKP with a newer model and dispose of the old machine. Here, too,
our company can offer you assistance.

At Siemens, the recycling of old computer equipment is already a long-standing tradition:
we have been reclaiming and recycling decommissioned computer systems for over a
decade.

As early as the design stage, we place particular emphasis on the reusability of materials.
For example, all of the larger computer parts that are made of synthetic materials are clearly
marked to indicate their constituents, in order to simplify subsequent recycling processes.

Wherever possible, your 3970-2x SKP has been built using materials that can be disposed
of in an environmentally friendly manner and can be properly recycled.
