Manufacturer’s notes
Energy Star
The Fujitsu Siemens LCD colour monitor 383V FA is designed to conserve
electricity by dropping to less t han 3 W when i t goes into standby,
suspend and OFF mode. With thi s new power management the 383V FA
qualifies for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy
Star Computers award.
The EPA estimates that comput er equipment uses 5% percent of all bus iness electricity and that
this is growing rapidly. If all desk top computers and peripherals enter a low-power mode when not in
use, the overall savings in electricity could amount to $ 2 t housand million annually. These savings
could also prevent the emiss i on of 20 million tons of carbon dioxide into the at mosphere - the
equivalent of 5 million automobiles.

Notes on ergonomic colour adjustment
If you select colours for the displ ay in your application program m es, take note of the i nformation
below.
The primary colours blue and red on a dark background do not produce the mini mum required
contrast of 3:1 and are therefore not suitable for continuous text and dat a entry.
When using several col ours for characters and bac kground and giving the primary c ol ours full
modulation, you can obtain very suitable colour combinations (see the following table):
-Colour combination not suitable because colour locations are too close together, thin
characters are not identifiable or rigorous focusing is demanded of the human eye.

VESA-DDC-compatible VGA interface
Your monitor is equipped with a VESA-DDC-compatible V GA interface. VESA-DDC (Video
Electronics S tandard Associati on, Display Data Channel) is used as the communications interface
between the monitor and the computer. If your computer is equipped with a VESA-DDC-compatible
VGA interface, i t can automaticall y read the data for ensuring optim um operation from your monitor
and select the appropriat e settings.
If the monitor 383V FA i s not yet displayed i n the list of monitors, you can select the
i
following monitor instead:
Fujitsu Siemens 381V , 38B1, 3814 FA
Siemens or Siemens Ni xdorf MCF 3511 TA, MCM 1405 ND

Preset operating modes
The picture position and size have been set to opt i m um values at the fact ory for the

operating modes list ed above. Depending on the screen cont rol ler used, it may be
necessary to adjust the display pos i tion and size. If you need to do so, refer to the
section entit l ed " Changi ng t he monitor settings" bel ow.

For ergonomic reasons, a s creen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels is recommended. Because of the
technology used (ac t i ve matrix) an LCD monitor provides a totally flicker-free picture even with a
refresh rate of 60 Hz.
From a technical point of view, it is pref erabl e to set a refresh rate of above 60°Hz on an
i
LCD monitor with a TFT display.

Should an error occur, firs t check the following points . I f the distortion is still not eliminat ed, the
monitor should, if possible, be check ed on another computer and/or with another data cable.
If you are unable to sol ve the problem, please inf orm our Hel p Desk.
The display is too small or not centred
The monitor recognises an undefined mode (see "Technic al dat a" ).
Ê Adjust t he position and the size of the display and sav e your settings (see " M oni tor settings
using the OSD menu").
No display (power indicator does not light)
Ê Check whether t he ON/ O FF switches on the monit or and on t he computer are switched on.
Ê Check whether t he power cable is connected c orrectly on the monitor and on the computer.
Ê Check whether t he m ai ns socket is l i ve.

Ê Check whether t he computer is switched on.
Ê Check whether t he data cable for the monitor is correctly attached to the monitor port on the
computer.
Ê Press any key on the computer keyboard – the computer may be in energy saving mode.
Ê Alter the brightness and/or contras t until you get a picture.
Picture disturbances (vertical and horizontal l i n es, picture noise)
Ê First set the basic sett i ng of the monitor with the fl oppy disk provided.
Ê If neces sary, then adjust t he pi cture definition wit h t he FINE TUNE funct i on (LCD ADJUST

Permanently unlit or lit pixels
Windows Me, Windows 2000 or OS/2 (with Windows emulation i nstalled) is used, t he
basic monitor s et tings can be set wit h the floppy disk s uppl i ed.
The standard of production t echniques today cannot guarant ee an absolutely fault-f ree screen
display. A few i solated constant l i t or unl i t pixels may be present. The maximum permit ted number
of pixels faults is stipulat ed i n the stringent internati onal standard ISO 13406-2 (Class I I).
Example: a 15" fl at -screen monitor with a resol ution of 1024 x 768 has 1024 x 768 = 786432 pix el s.
Each pixel consists of three subpixels (red, green and blue), so there are about 2.4 million dots in
total.
According to IS O 13406-2 (Cl ass II), a maxim um of 4 pixels and 5 subpixel s may be defectiv e, i. e.
a total of 17 faulted dot s. This corresponds to approx. 0,002 % of the entire screen surface!
The flat screen monitors from Fujitsu S i em ens Computers are typic al l y considerably better than
requirements defined in t hi s standard.
The screen becomes darker
The background lighting has a l i m i ted lifetime. If your monitor display should become too dark, the
background lighting will have to be exchanged. Please contact our Help Desk.
