Selecting the desired installation mode
To set up a single server:
It is recommended to configure ServerStart in Guided Mode on the target system. Compared to the
Expert Mode, this offers increased security by recognition and configuration of the hardware.
Continue with the "Installation in Guided Mode" chapter.
If you decide to install in Expert Mode, you will need to know the hard disk capacity and

Only one boot system can be selected in the Preparation Mode and in the Guided Mode,
and only one RAID array can be s et as a boot device. If the capacity of the boot drive
cannot be determined, s el ect the "Automati c" option for an optimal partitioning.
Guided installation of a single server
Installation in Guided Mode
In Guided Mode, installation ass i stants configure your server hardware and disk array s and then
install the operati ng system and integrated applications. For t he new i nstallation, st andard settings
are loaded from a Default Configuration File. This configuration f i l e can be found on the ServerStart-
CD and may be edited by the admi n i strator.
Proceed as follows:
Ê Switch the server on and insert the ServerStart CD into t he dri ve.
Ê Switch the server off and on again. ServerStart will now be started from the CD-ROM on the
target system.
Ê After the boot process the ServerStart user interface appears. Select t he i nstallation mode and
follow the instal l ation process in the Use r F r ame.
Ê A hardware analysis of the target system is performed. Configuration data is gathered for the
installation.
Ê After the configuration definit i on has been completed, the installation phase is i ni tiated without
any additional restart. Data carriers wit h the operating system, Service packs, and additional
applications are then requi red to start the inst al l ation.
The rest of the inst al l ation process incl udi ng al l necessary restart s executes without any input from
the user.
Exception: Neces sary specifications that were not made in the configuration phas e will be

requested during the inst al l at i on.
Page 20
Preparing for useInstalling the software
During the installat i on of Wi ndows NT/2000 and NetWare 5, ServerStart also automatically
i
integrates drivers for system components that are not contained in the operating system.
During the installat i on of other operating systems, ServerStart notifies the user of the
missing drivers. If necess ary the user can now make a driver installation floppy disk.
Alternative installation in Expert Mode
In contrast t o t he Disk and RAID Wizards in the Guided Mode, the Expert Mode lets you directly
configure the hardware using t he t ool s specifical l y from the manufacturer:
• Windows NT Disk Adm i ni strator, Global Flash ServiceParti tion Manager, DuplexData Partition
Manager
• Mylex GAM (Global Access Manager), S torage Manager
In connection wit h the configuration in the Expert Mode, the operating system installation can be
performed analogously to the Guided Mode.
To update BIOS, firm ware, and drivers with the Global Flash Tool, you will need a service
i
partition. You can set this up conveni ently using the Disk Wizard from ServerStart.
