Thank you for selecting FOMA F884i mobile terminal.

Both before and during use of your FOMA mobile terminal, be sure to thoroughly read this manual
and instruction manuals that come with other optional devices to ensure you are able to correctly
use your FOMA mobile terminal. For more information, you may contact us as mentioned on the
back of this manual.
Treated with care, your FOMA F884i mobile terminal will be your able partner.

Before using your FOMA terminal

● Because your FOMA terminal uses radio waves, it may not function in locations where it is

difficult for radio waves to penetrate, such as tunnels, underground passages and some
buildings, in areas where radio wave signals are weak, or out of service area. Even when you are
high up in a tall building or condominium and nothing blocks your view outside, your FOMA
terminal may not be able to receive or transmit signals. Also, communication may be interrupted
even when the signal meter on your FOMA terminal indicates there is a strong signal and you are
not moving (traveling).

● Use your FOMA terminal in a way that does not disturb others in public spaces, crowded

locations or quiet places.

● Because your FOMA terminal uses radio waves to communicate, it is possible that a third party

may attempt to tap your calls. However, the W-CDMA or GSM/GPRS system automatically
applies a confidential communication function to all calls, so even if a third party could somehow
tap a call, they only hear noise.

● Your FOMA terminal encodes voice communication as digital data. When you are operating your

FOMA terminal while moving to a location subject to weaker radio wave signals, the transmitted
digital data may not be correctly decoded and as a result the decoded voice may differ somewhat
from the actual voice.

● Maintain a separate record of the data (Phonebook, Schedule, Recorded messages, Voice

memos) you registered in your FOMA terminal. If the data should be deleted, DoCoMo assumes
no responsibility for the loss of any data.

● You are recommended to save important data to microSD memory card. Using DoCoMo keitai

datalink, you can transfer and save phonebook, mail, schedule and other data to a PC.

● The user hereby agrees that the user shall be solely responsible for the result of the use of SSL.

Neither DoCoMo nor the certifier as listed herein makes any representation and warranty as for
the security in the use of SSL. If the data should be erased, DoCoMo assumes no responsibility
for the loss of any data.

Main functions of FOMA F884i

FOMA is a DoCoMo's service name based on W-CDMA recognized as one of the global
standards for 3rd generation wireless communication (IMT-2000).

Easy Search/CONTENTS/Handling instructions

i-mode mail and Easy Deco-mail

In addition to message text, you can attach
up to 10 files (images, ToruCa, etc.) or files of
up to 2 Mbytes in total to a message.
Moreover, because Deco-mail is available,
you can receive colorful and joyful mails or
send decorated mails.

While staying overseas, you can use the
same FOMA terminal, phone number and
mail address as those used in Japan. You can
use voice/videophone calls, i-mode, i-mode
mail, SMS and network services.

Using radio wave emitted from GPS satellite,
Location information of the FOMA terminal
can be obtained. Using the information, you
can search the map of your current location
or ambient information, and send mails by
attaching your current location. And, you can
notify the other party of your location
information by voice or mail, or you can
search the route to the destination.

You can receive Digital Terrestrial TV
broadcasting for mobile object (1Seg). You
can easily enjoy participating in quiz program

Optic guide and the guide function

When a voice call or a videophone call comes
in, keypads flash in bright colors to notify you
of the way to answer the call. When recording
a movie or checking the settings, you can see
which button to press. For the menu or
functions name that "Guide" appears below the
display, you can read the explanation.

Read aloud the explanation of operation
currently shown on the display, or the
contents of a received mail or a site.
With the FOMA terminal folded, if you press
and hold on the right side for 1 second or
more, the FOMA terminal lets you know the
current time by voice. You can change the
voice quality or speed of reading to set the
reading operation to be easy to hear.

Only by pressing the numeric keypad (One­touch dial button) above the multi-cursor
button, you can easily make a call to or create
a mail for a registered party. You can also set
a ring alert or an incoming call image
dedicated to the registered party.

Various security settings

Omakase Lock

Omakase Lock is a service that locks FOMA
terminal on request from the subscriber. Even
if the holder of FOMA terminal is different
from its subscriber, the terminal may be
locked on request from the subscriber.
* This is charged service. If you request

unlocking at the same time as service
interruption or during interruption, no charges
occur. Even in Omakase Lock, if Request
permit/deny is "ON", the FOMA terminal
responds to location request of GPS function.
For precautions and detailed procedure for
using this service, see "Mobile Phone User's
Guide [Procedures and After-Sales Service]".

Other covenant functions

Swing display (YOKO-MOTION)

By rotating the display 90 degrees to the right
or left, you can use the horizontal screen to
watch 1Seg or shoot and play still images/
movies. And, some functions and i-αppli are
applicable to Wide display that can display
fully on the horizontal screen.

Barcode reader and magnifier

By using the camera's closeup function, you
can use the FOMA terminal as a barcode
reader or a magnifier.
By using the barcode reader, you can collect
information.

Voice clear and Voice slowing

"Voice slowing" that adjusts the speed of
other party's voice, and "Voice clear" that
makes the other party's voice clear and
adjusts the volume even in noise. Supports 2
functions that make other party's voice easy
to hear for voice calls.

Supporting "microSD memory card"

You cam make back-up copy of such data as
images, melodies, phonebooks or mails in
the FOMA terminal.
By saving a movie created with external
device in microSD memory card, you can
play it with the FOMA terminal (it may not be
played under some conditions).

Data Security Service

This service allows you to store phonebook,
mails and/or images saved in FOMA terminal
to Data Center and, in case of misplacement,
etc. of FOMA terminal, restore the data to
FOMA terminal. In addition, you can edit or
manage data stored in Date Center from a PC
and reflect the edited data to FOMA terminal.

You can send/receive data to/from other FOMA
terminals, mobile phones or PCs equipped
with the infrared communication function.
And, by iC transmission, you can send/receive
data by making FeliCa marks of the FOMA
terminals of the sender close to each other.

One-touch buzzer →p.388

By sounding a large-volume buzzer pressing the
button in emergency situation, you can notify
the people around you of your current location.
And, when you sound the one-touch buzzer, you
can automatically make a voice call or use GPS
function to notify of your current location.

Phone conversations can be made between
FOMA terminals supporting videophone call
while looking at the other party's image
displayed on the screen. By using
speakerphone function, you can talk with the
FOMA terminal placed.

Pedometer →p.392

By using the FOMA terminal as a pedometer,
you can calculate the distance you walked
and the calorie you consumed. And, you can
automatically send the information of the
pedometer to the same receiver at the same
time every day (Pedometer automatic
sending mail).

● Keep water away from FOMA terminal.

waterproof. Do not use FOMA terminal in
bathrooms or other high-humidity areas, or in
the rain. When carrying FOMA terminal in a
pocket near your body, sweat may corrode the
inner components, causing malfunction.
Malfunctions deemed to be caused by water
are not covered by the warranty, and may be
impossible to repair. Since these conditions
are outside the scope of the warranty, a repair,
if at all possible, is charged.

● Clean FOMA terminal with a dry soft cloth (such

as a cloth for eyeglasses).

･

The display of FOMA terminal may have been
applied special coating to improve clearness of
the color LCD. When cleaning FOMA terminal,
rubbing it roughly with a dry cloth can scratch
the display. Take care when handling the unit,
and clean it with a dry soft cloth (such as a cloth
for eyeglasses). Drops of water or dirt left on the
display can cause stains or remove the coating.

･ If FOMA terminal is wiped with alcohol, paint

thinner, benzine or detergent, the printing may
disappear or color may fade.

● Clean the jack occasionally with a dry cotton

swab.

･ If the jack is dirty, the contact may become

poor and the power may shut off. A dirty jack
can result in poor charging, so clean it with a
dry cloth or cotton swab.

● Do not place FOMA terminal near an air-

conditioner outlet.

･ The rapid change in temperature may cause

condensation, causing internal corrosion and
malfunction.

● When using, be careful not to subject excessive

force to the FOMA terminal or the battery.

･ If the FOMA terminal is crammed into a

brimming bag or placed in a pocket and sat on,
display, internal PCBs or battery pack may be
damaged or malfunction.
And, if external devices are plugged into the
external connecting jack or earphone/
microphone jack, the breakage of the

● It uses 13.56 MHz frequency band. When using

other reader/writers in your surroundings, keep
FOMA terminal away sufficiently from them.
Before using the FeliCa reader/writer, confirm
that there are no radio stations using the same
frequency band nearby.

･ Near general subscriber phones, TVs or radios

● It is normal for the adapter (including battery
charger) to become warm while charging.
Continue to use it.

● When using the DC adapter for charging, keep
the vehicle engine running.

･ The vehicle's battery could become flat.

● When using an outlet with a mechanism

If there is a notification of failed auto-update of phonebook or saving phonebook, auto-update
of pattern definitions or result of Location request of GPS, it is displayed as information on
stand-by display. And, if there is a record of received mail or missed call, recorded message,
or Voice messages in Voice Mail service center, it is notified as information on the stand-by
display.

In this manual, the explanation of operations displayed on the guide line is explained by

corresponding buttons (m, k, p). Display locations and buttons correspond as shown
