Your ESPRIMO Q...

... is available with various configuration levels with different hardware and software.

This manual tells you how to put your device into operation and how to operate it in daily use. This
manual applies for all configuration levels. Depending on the configuration level chosen some of the
hardware components described may not be available on your PC. Please observe the notes on your
operating system.

Depending on the configuration selected, the operating system is preinstalled on your hard disk (e.g.
Microsoft Windows).

Your device has a number of security features to ensure that no unauthorised persons can access
your data. The security functions in the BIOS Setup also allow you to protect your data by means of
passwords.

DeskUpdate allows you under some operating systems to easily and quickly install the latest drivers
and operating system extensions with a few mouse clicks. DeskUpdate is contained on the
"Drivers & Utilities" CD/DVD.

Do not clean any interior parts yourself, leave this job to a service technician.

Do not use any cleaning agents that contain abrasives or may corrode plastic.

Wipe the casing with a dry cloth. If particularly dirty, use a cloth that has been moistened in mild
domestic detergent and then carefully wrung out. Use disinfectant wipes to clean the keyboard and

Unpacking and checking the delivery

It is recommended not to throw away the original packaging material! It may be required for
reshipment at some later date.

► Unpack all the individual parts.

► Check the delivery for damage incurred during transportation.

► Check whether the delivery agrees with the details in the delivery note.

► Should you discover that the delivery does not correspond to the delivery note, notify your local

sales outlet immediately.

Steps for initial setup

Only a few steps are necessary to put your new device into operation for the first time:

● Select location for device and set up device

● Connect the monitor, mouse and keyboard

● Check the voltage at the mains outlet and connect the device to an electrical outlet

● Switch the device on

You will learn more about the individual steps in the following sections.

External devices

If you have received other devices in addition to your device (e.g. a printer or a modem),

description of how to connect these external devices.

Setting up the device

When installing your device, please read the recommendations and safety notes in the

"Safety" manual.

The device should only be set up in the intended orientation, i.e. in a horizontal position.

We recommend that you place your device on a surface with good anti-slip qualities. In
view of the multitude of different finishes and varnishes used on furniture, it is possible that
the rubber or plastic feet of the device will mark the surface they stand on.

Do not expose the device to extreme environmental conditions (see "
Protect the device from dust, humidity, and heat.

Make sure that the device is adequately ventilated. Never place the device on a soft
surface (e.g. carpeting, upholstered furniture, bed). This may block the air vents
underneath the device, which could cause damage to the device due to overheating.

Do not stack several devices on top of each other.

Connecting external devices

Read the documentation on the external device before connecting it.

Connecting cables

● Switch off all equipment concerned.

● Remove all the mains plugs for the equipment concerned from the mains sockets.

With the exception of USB devices, always remove all power plugs before connecting
external devices!

Do not connect or disconnect cables during a thunderstorm.

Always take hold of the actual plug. Never unplug a cable by pulling the cable itself.

Connect and disconnect the cables in the order described below.

● Plug in the cables at the device and peripheral equipment. Always pay careful attention to the

● Plug the data communication cables into the data/telephone network sockets.

● Insert the mains plugs into earth-protected mains sockets.

The connections are located on the front and back of the device. The ports available on your device
depend on the configuration level you have selected. The standard ports are marked with the
symbols shown below (or similar).

Connecting the monitor

► Follow the instructions contained in the monitor manual to prepare the monitor for operation

(e.g. connecting cables).

► Plug the data cable into the monitor port of the device.

Connecting USB mouse

► Connect the USB mouse to one of the USB ports on the device.

Connecting USB keyboard

► Plug the rectangular connector of the keyboard cable into the rectangular socket on the

underside of the keyboard.

► Insert the flat rectangular USB plug of the keyboard cable into a USB port of the device.

Connecting external devices to the USB ports

You can connect a wide range of external devices to the USB ports (e.g. printer, scanner, modem or
keyboard).

USB devices are hot-pluggable. This means you can connect and disconnect devices

requires its own software, please install it from the data carrier provided with the USB

Connecting the power adapter

The supplied power cable conforms to the requirements of the country in
which you purchased your device. Make sure that the power cable is
approved for use in the country in which you intend to use it.

The mains adapter's power cable should only be connected to a mains socket
if the device is connected to the mains adapter.

Do not use the mains adapter for other devices.

Only use the mains adapter intended for your device, see chapter "
data".

Make sure that the rated current of the mains adapter is not higher than that of
the power system to which you connect it (see technical data for the mains
adapter).

Switching on for the first time: installing the software

If the device is integrated into a network, the user and server details as well as the network protocol
are required during the software installation. Contact your network administrator if you have any
questions about these settings.

When you switch on the device for the first time, the supplied software is installed and configured.
Plan a reasonable amount of time for this, as this process must not be interrupted.

Once the installation has been started the device must not be switched off, unless the

Your ESPRIMO features a new technology which allows you to boot your system simply

The power indicator is located on the front of the casing.

A memory card reader (1) is incorporated in the front of your machine.

Card types that can be read:

● SecureDigital Card (SD)

● MultiMedia Card (MMC)

● Reduced-Size MultiMedia Card (RS-MMC)

● xD Picture Card (xD)

● Memory Stick (MS)

● Memory Stick Pro (MS Pro)

When handling memory cards, comply with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Your dealer can supply you with an adapter for your memory card.

Inserting the memory card

► Carefully insert the memory card into the

slot. The side with writing on it must face
upwards. Do not force the card in,
otherwise the delicate contact surfaces
can be damaged.

Taking out the memory card

When taking out the card, always proceed systematically as described below, to avoid

any loss of your data.

Always wait until the data access has been completed before taking the card out of the
slot.

If your reader has a status display, remove the card only once this has stopped flashing.

► If your reader has a card interlock: Press

on the memory card (1).

The memory card is now released and can be
taken out.

► Take the memory card out of the slot (2).

Handling CD/DVDs

Observe the following guidelines when handling CD/DVDs:

● Avoid touching the surface of a CD/DVD. Hold CDs/DVDs by their edges!

● Always store CDs/DVDs in their cases. This will protect them from dust, scratches

and other damage.

● Protect your CDs/DVDs from dust, mechanical vibration and direct sunlight!

● Avoid storing a CD/DVD in areas subject to high temperatures or humidity.

You may use 12-cm CDs/DVDs in the optical drive. Do not use any business card CDs or
other small CDs.

When using CDs/DVDs of poor quality vibrations and reading errors may occur.

The device must be switched on.

► Gently insert the CD/DVD into the drive with

CD/DVD is automatically drawn in.

Removing a CD/DVD

The device must be switched on.

The device does not provide a mechanical CD/DVD eject function. The Eject tool needs to

be installed in Windows mode. You will find further information about the system as well as
drivers, additional software and updates on the "Drivers & Utilities" CD/DVD.

► Push the eject button.

The CD/DVD will be ejected.

► Remove the CD/DVD.

Troubleshooting:

If you push the eject button while the CD/DVD in the optical drive is still being accessed,
the CD/DVD is not ejected automatically. Please wait for the reading process to finish,
then try again.

Wireless LAN/ Bluetooth radio component (optional)

Depending on the configuration level chosen, your device is already equipped with wireless LAN and
Bluetooth.

be switched off via the software.

Settings in the BIOS Setup

In BIOS Setup you can set the system functions and the hardware configuration of the device. The
settings can only be changed via the keyboard.

When it is supplied, the device is set to factory default settings. You can change these settings in
BIOS Setup. Any changes you make take effect as soon as you save and quit the BIOS Setup.

You can choose between AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) and IDE
(Integrated Drive Electronics). The operating system only supports the mode in
which the hard disk was installed. If the mode is altered without re-installing the
operating system, the hard disk will no longer be recognised by the operating
system and an error message will be displayed.

Starting the BIOS Setup

► Restart the device (switching On/Off or warm boot).

► Press the function key F2 .

If a password has been assigned:

► Enter the password and press the Enter key.

If you have forgotten the password, contact your system administrator or contact our
Hotline/Service Desk.

Operating BIOS Setup

► Use the cursor key  or  to select the menu you wish to access to make changes.

► Press the Enter key.

The menu is displayed on the screen.

► Use the cursor key  or  to select the field you wish to change.

► Press the Enter key to confirm your selection.

► Press the ESC key to exit the selected menu.

► Note the changed entries.

Exiting BIOS Setup

To exit BIOS Setup, select menu Save Exit Setup or Exit without Saving from the menu bar. You can
then decide which settings you want to save.

Your device enables you to protect your system and personal data in a number of ways against
unauthorised access. By combining these options, you can achieve maximum protection for your
system.

In this chapter you will learn which security functions your device is equipped with, which advantages
these functions offer you and how to configure and use them.

Please consider that in the case of improper use, you yourself will also be unable to

access your system and your data. Please note therefore the following hints:

● Back up your data on external data carriers at regular intervals.

● Some security functions need you to choose a password. Please be sure to note

these passwords, as otherwise you will no longer be able to access your system.
We recommend that you make a note of the passwords and keep them in a safe
place.

If you lose both the user and the admin passwords you will need to contact the Service
Desk. The telephone numbers are contained in the supplied Service Desk List. Passwords
are not covered by your warranty and a charge will be made for assistance.

Anti-theft protection with a Kensington Lock

The device has a Kensington Lock device for the Kensington MicroSaver. With the Kensington
MicroSaver, a sturdy steel cable, you can help protect your device from theft. The Kensington
MicroSaver is available as an accessory.

► Fit the Kensington MicroSaver on the corresponding device on your equipment.

The Security menu in BIOS Setup offers you various options for protecting your personal data against
unauthorised access using passwords, e.g.:

● Setup password: preventing unauthorised calls to BIOS Setup

● System password: preventing unauthorised system access

Setup and system passwords can be configured in the same way.

Setup, please note the following hints:

● Be sure to note your passwords, as if you forget your password, you cannot access
your BIOS Setup and/or your system.
Passwords are not covered by your warranty and a charge will be made for

displayed while setting the password.

Passwords can be up to eight characters long. You can use all alphanumeric characters
and need not distinguish between uppercase and lowercase characters.

► Call BIOS Setup and select the Advanced BIOS Features menu.

► Select the type of protection you require under Security Option: Setup password or system

password.

► Return to the BIOS Setup main menu.

► Select Set Password.

► Enter the password and press the Enter key.

With Confirm new Password you are asked to confirm the password.

► Enter the password again and press the Enter key.

The new password will take effect when the device reboots.

If you have configured a setup password and want to call BIOS Setup, you must enter the setup
password.

► Call BIOS Setup and select the Advanced BIOS Features menu.

When changing the password, proceed exactly as for password assignment.

Cancelling passwords

To cancel a password (without setting a new password) run the following steps:

► Call BIOS Setup and select the Set Password menu.

► Press the Enter key twice, without entering a password.

The message Password Disabled will appear.

The password will be cancelled after saving and exiting the BIOS Setup.

you can solve it quickly using the SystemDiagnostics program pre-installed on your computer.

► To start the SystemDiagnostics program, click Start - Programs - Fujitsu - SystemDiagnostics.

► If a problem is detected during the test run, the SystemDiagnostics program outputs a code (e.g.

DIFS code YXXX123456789123).

► Take a note of this DIFS code and the ID number of your device. The ID number can be found

on the type rating plate on the back of the casing.

► Touch the ON/OFF switch for at least 5 seconds,

until the device switches off.

The operating system is not shut-down properly in the
process. Error messages are therefore possible the next
time the system is booted.

It may take a few seconds before the system boots. This
is while the system carries out a check.
