SOLAR CELL-STRING OPTIMIZATION
/ Cutting costs while driving performance with Fronius inverters
Module-level power electronics have been embraced as a way to overcome module technology that can place limitations on
performance and reliability. Fronius has partnered with Maxim Integrated to bring a new form of optimization to the
Canadian market: solar cell optimizers for module-level MPP tracking that work seamlessly with Fronius inverters.
A cell string consists of six to 24 cells connected in parallel and the typical module is composed of three cell strings. Maxim
solar cell optimizers are smart integrated circuits that replace the diodes found in a conventional junction box. They boost
the current of any weak cells to match the stronger performing cells, ensuring that the energy production of the normally
compromised cell string is not lost. Maxim optimizers ensure increased energy harvest and reduced power degradation.

MAXIM
-IZE ENERGY PRODUCTION
BENEFITS AT A GLANCE
DESIGN FLEXIBILITY
Maxim Integrated offers great design flexibility,
accommodating shading, multiple orientations, different
module power levels, and non-symmetrical designs.
The tolerance for shading allows for the tightest row spacing
in commercial rooftop systems.
EASY INSTALLATION
A system with Maxim optimizers and Fronius inverters is
easy to install – installers can continue to use the procedures
they learned in Fronius training. There is no increased labour
required to install optimizer boxes, additional wiring, or
pesky rooftop communications devices.
Module manufacturers embed the power regulators within
the module junction box, providing simple, low cost
installation with conventional system architecture.
BEST PERFORMANCE WITH THE HIGHEST RETURNS
Maxim estimates that if cell-level optimized modules are used
in place of conventional panels, designers will see a three to
four percent increase in production because of the modules
increased shade tolerance.
• Increased energy harvest: additional performance gains
by building the MPPT into the cell strings
• Reduced power degradation: eliminate hot-spot
conditions associated with diode operation, improving
long-term module reliability
• Expanded system size
• Flexibility in design
• Minimize shading and soiling losses from clouds, module
power tolerance, object and row-to-row shading
• High-reliability solution

Designers can now reconfigure commercial system layouts to
allow for more inter-row shading, which is minimized by the
Maxim optimizers. With a higher ground coverage ratio than
a conventional system, these PV systems can achieve 10 to 20
percent more energy density.
