Introduction

The Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit is 2.5" HDD interface type of MPEG4 player based on USB 2.0 High Speed. It can be connected to TV in home or a monitor. It is not only an external USB HDD but also the best portable AV device that displays Music, Movie and photo.

Minimum System Requirements

The following hard- and software requirements must be fulfilled to ensure trouble-free operation.
Hardware Requirements
• Pentium III 500MHz or faster
• At least 128 MB RAM
• USB interface (USB 1.1 or USB 2.0*)
• A CD-ROM drive or internet connection for driver installation (for WIN98SE)
• For playback on TV, a TV with PAL or NTSC system is required.
• Support HDD: Compatible with standard 2.5" IDE Hard Drive
* USB 2.0 is downwards compatible to USB 1.1. To achieve optimal performance from the
Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit your PC should be equipped with an USB 2.0 port. USB 2.0 PCI Host Controllers are separately available at www.freecom.com.

• For use under Mac OS and Linux, the drive needs to be FAT-32 formatted.

Warnings and Safety Instructions

Please read and follow the below mentioned instructions. They should be observed in order to prevent injury to the user, damage to the device and damage to property, as well as to ensure safe use of the product. Not following these instructions may cause the unit to malfunction.
• Safely remove the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit via your operating system (the "unplug or eject hardware" option in the Windows taskbar) before disconnecting the USB cable or power cable and before switching off the device. Failing to do so may result in data loss.
• Do not disconnect the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit from the PC during file transfer. This may result in data loss and an error on the player. If this occurs, please run the ScanDisk utility.
• Do not turn off the power when a file is playing.
• We strongly recommend you to regularly back up the data from the hard drive that you have built in, to another safe media. Freecom can never be held responsible for data damage or data loss of the built-in HDD.
• Unplug the power adaptor when you don't use the device for a longer period of time.
• If the length of USB cable is too long, it may not be connected smoothly (Recommend: up to 3 meters)
• We recommend you to use the all supplied cables or accessories that are customized for the best performance of the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive­In Kit. Using other cables or accessories may not support the best perform­ance.
• If you have USB 1.1 Host Adapter, the device will be working at USB1.1 speed.
• When using a hard drive with less than 6GB storage capacity, you may experience data damage or data loss. We recommend you to use a harddrive of more than 6GB.

Note: Make sure to format the Hard Drive before using the device. When you use an unformatted HDD, a PC will not detect the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit.
Warnings and Safety Instructions
• In a car, we recommend you to use the supplied cigarette lighter jack (option) and we are not responsible for the damage or loss of data in a HDD by using another cigarette lighter jack.
• Grip the side of the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit. The top & bottom cover may have heat due to aluminum case.
• This Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit does not supports the DivX, XviD codec of video files that has GMC, Qpel option.
• This Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit supports only "Pass-Through for DTS Audio codec.
Be away from water, heavy moisture. If the Freecom MediaPlayer­25 Drive-In Kit has a liquid, unplug the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit from a PC right away. If you use the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit under this condition, the HDD may be fired or you may have electric shock.
• Don’t touch the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit by wet hands. It may cause electric shock.
• Be away from heat, a direct ray of light.
• Be away from devices that transmit strong magnetic signal. It may cause data damage or loss on HDD.
• Don’t disassemble as the user’s own accord. It may cause the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit damaged or loose the data.
• Do not drop the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit or expose it to other kinds of sudden mechanical shocks as this may result in data loss and damage to the hard drive.
• Do not use the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit when the ambient temperature is below 10°C or above 45°C.
• If the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit is moved from a cool environ­ment to a warmer environment, please allow the drive to acclimatize to the ambient temperature before operating the device. Failing to do so may lead to condensation within the drive enclosure, which in turn may cause the drive to malfunction.
• Do not use the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit in a dusty environment. Dust inside the enclosure may damage the internal electronics and result in drive malfunction.
• Do not use the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit near magnetic fields.
• The MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit may generate heat when used for a longer period of time.

Chapter 2: Assembling a Hard Drive into the
MediaPlayer
This chapter describes how to assemble or disassemble a hard drive to/from the player.
Note: The HDD should be jumpered as "Master".

Connecting the player to a PC

Chapter 3: Connecting the player to a PC

Connect the player to the PC using the supplied USB Cable.
Note: Windows 98SE users have to install the Installation Driver first. Refer to the below instructions.

3.1. Instructions for Windows Users

When the player is connected to the PC, a new volume will appear on [My Computer]. You can save any data on this volume. See the instructions below the various Windows versions.

After detecting the Player, a new volume will appear.

3.1.1 Windows 98SE Users

Note: For the use under Windows98SE you must install the USB2.0 driver which is on the manual CD, otherwise your PC does not recognize the player as a new disk drive.

When you install [Win98_Freecom MediaPlayer-25.exe], the installation wiz­ard will appear. Press [Next] button and complete the installation.
Check the Driver Installation
You can check whether the driver is installed correctly or not at [Appendix. Check the Driver Installation for the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit at Windows].
Check whether the hard drive is formatted or not
If the assembled hard drive is not formatted, a PC will not detect the HDD. Refer to Chapter 7:"Format the Built-in HDD via USB", for more details.
How to remove the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit safely from a PC
Remove the player using the "safely remove" icon from the Windows taskbar. Not following this procedure may cause damage to the drive and/or data loss.

3.1.2 Windows ME/2000/XP Users

There is no need to install any Installation Driver.
Connect the player to the PC using the supplied USB Cable. The PC will automatically detect the player as USB Mass Storage Device in [My Computer].
Check the Driver Installation
You can check whether the driver is installed correctly or not at Appendix: "Check the Driver Installation for the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 at Windows".
Check whether the hard drive is formatted or not
If the assembled hard drive is not formatted, a PC will not detect the HDD. Refer to Chapter 7:"Format the Built-in HDD via USB", for more details.
How to remove the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit safely from a PC
Remove the player using the "safely remove" icon taskbar. Not following this procedure may cause damage to the drive and/or data loss.

3.2 Mac Users

There is no need to install an installation driver for Mac OS 10.x version; the player will be detected automatically. If the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit is detected correctly, an icon will appeared on your desktop.
To remove the player safely, drag the icon to the trash can and unplug the player.

Chapter 4: Connecting the player to external AV
Devices
The player supports Composite, S-Video, and Component for Video and Stereo & 5.1Ch sound by Digital Output (Coaxial). Please refer to the below examples.

4.1 Connect by Composite for Video & Stereo for Audio

This is the most commonly used method to connect the player to a TV.

Chapter 5: Basic Setup of the player

5.1 Video Setup

The default Video Setup is Composite Connection for general TV. If a general cable (Yellow) is connected, there is no need to change the settings.
If you want to connect the device by using other cables, select the proper TV system (NTSC / PAL) for the TV to receive a correct video signal. For Video Setup, press [Setup] button on the remote control.
When the main screen does not appear In case, the main screen does not appear after connecting the
proper cables and powering the player on, press [F1] button on the remote control until you see the main page (Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit LOGO PAGE) and then press [Setup] button in order to match [Video] setup with TV. When necessary refer to TV manual.

5.1.1 Setup of TV System (NTSC / PAL)

Select [Setup] -> [Video Setup] -> Press [Enter] or [ ] button. Select [TV Output] by using [ or ] button. Select a menu by using [ ] and [ ] key and press [Enter] for setup. Now, the new configuration is applyied. Be sure to press [Enter] button to
save the new setup. Set other configurations by using arrow buttons or go to other setup pages
by pressing [Setup] button.

5.1.2 Setup of HD Component (Progressive)

NTSC, PAL: Standard of TV Output. Select the proper one for using in your country.
• C(Composite): If a general cable (Yellow) is connected, no
need to change.
• S-Video: When connected by S-Video cable (Black) and the
screen color is black&white, you need to change the configu­ration.
• Y,PB,PR: Use these settings when connected via Component
Video Output
In order to use Component connection, the TV MUST support [Progressive Scan].
Select [Setup] button on the remote control. Select [Video Setup] -> Press [Enter] or [ ] button. Select [HD Component] output by using [ ] keys. By using [ ] and [ or ] button, select the proper setting (480p, 720p,
1080i, off) and then press [Enter] button. Now, the new configuration is applied Be sure to press [Enter] button to confirm the new setup. Finally, press
[Setup] button to save the configuration.

Basic Setup of the player
If you see an abnormal/distorted screen, your TV does not support [Progressive]. In this case, press [Video] button on a remote controller until you have a normal screen. Some TVs may not support [720P].

5.2 Audio Setup

Select [Setup] button on the remote control. Select [Audio Setup] by using [ or ] button. Select the proper audio output (Stereo (Analog) or Digital 5.1Ch (Encoded
Digital) by using [ ] button and press [Enter] button. Set other configurations by using arrow buttons or go to other setup pages
by pressing [Setup] button.

• Analog: Select this option when you connect Audio Cables (Red, White) to TV or HiFi directly.
• Digital: Select this option when you want to listen through
5.1Ch / DTS Dolby by connecting the player to a receiver (or amplifier) with AV2 or AV3 Cable .

5.3 Other Setup functions

Select [Setup] button on the remote control. Select [Other Setup] by using [ or ] button. Select the menu you want to change and press [Enter] button. Set other configurations by using arrow buttons or go to other setup pages
by pressing [Setup] button.
• Setup of TV Type (Screen Ratio Configuration): Select one (4:3 Letter Box, 4:3 Pan Scan, 16:9).
• JPEG File Preview: If enable "JPEG File Preview ON", a small picture (thumbnail) will be shown on the left side of the screen.
• Language Selection: Select your preferred language.
• Firmware Version: You can check the current firmware ver­sion of the Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit

Chapter 6: Play Video, Audio and Photo files

6.1 Play Video Files

Select [Video] -> Press [Enter] button then you will see a list of video files that you saved onto the player. Select the file you want to play, press [Enter] or [Play] button to start playback.

Various functions of the buttons on the remote control
You can use the following buttons when you are playing a video file:
[Audio] button: You can select Audio 01, Audio 02 if the audio format is multi-audio.
• [Caption] button: Supports the following three functions.
Subtitle move & size: Control Screen Location & Size. Subtitle select: The files that have caption will be displayed. Select the
preferred caption. Subtitle lang. select: Select a preferable language (only available in
multi-language file). Subtitle sync.: Set the subtitle sync. with (one second) (60
second)
Control Brightness of caption: Number 4 (make it dark), Number 6(make it bright)
[Scr. Size] button: Supports the following three functions.
Zoom vertical: By using keys, the screen size can be enlarged or reduced.
Zoom full: Enlarge the overall screen Custom: Make a screen by using / / / keys manually. Default: Return to original screen size Screen position: Move the screen to the direction with / / / keys.
Press [Brt.Cont] key for returning to the original screen position when applying Screen position.
[Time Search] button: Move to a selected time of a file.
[Brt. Cont] button.: Control luminosity / color depth / brightness of the screen.
[File Info.] button: Check the information of the file currently being played.
Screen Reset function: If a frame of a video file is broken, a green color will run on the overall screen. Press number [0 "Zero"] to reset the screen.

6.2 Play Audio Files

Select [Audio] -> Press [Enter] button; you will see the list of audio files that you saved onto the Player. Select the file you would like to play and press [Enter] or [Play] button; playback will start.

MP3 Quick Play
You can listen the mp3 files without the use of a TV or monitor. After booting the player, press [Play] button. The player will detect and play the mp3 files automatically. However, if there are too many other format files, it will take some time to detect the mp3 files.

6.3 Play Photos

Menu Description
Play All: All photo files will be played in order.
Media Select: You can move to another menu like Video, Audio, Playlist without returning first to the main page while you are in [Photo] menu.
Photo Preview
You can setup [Photo Preview] at the Setup menu (option: [Other Setup]). If this is enabled, a small picture (thumbnail) will be shown at the left side of the screen.

• Volume +: Enlarge photos (Zoom In)
• Volume -: Reduce photos (Zoom Out)
• F2 Button: Rotate photos (Rotation) / / / buttons: Move photos to up, down, left and right (Panning)
Slide Show by using [Play All]
Select [Display] -> press [Enter]; all photos will be displayed in order.

6.4 Play List

You can create a [Play List] to play back files in the order you prefer. Select [Play List] –> Press [Enter] then all files will be shown. Select files you would prefer to play and press [Enter] button; the files you selected will have a [v] mark. After creating the [Play List], if you press [See Play List] then the files you selected will be shown on the screen.

Menu Description
Display: shows all files added to the Play List.
Media Select: Move to [Video], [Audio], [Photo] without returning first to the main page.
Play all: Play all files in order.
Random Play: Play the files in random order.
Remove All: All the added files in the current Play List will be deleted.
Change the order of [Play List]
Select [Display] -> Select a file -> scroll the files and select a file you would like to switch. Then the order of each file will be switched.

The player has DVD manager function which supports playing ripped DVD Files, in the same way as playing an original DVD. Create a folder (when player is connected to the PC), then save all ripped files into this folder. After connecting TV(or Monitor), select the VIDEO_TS.IFO file from the folder. Make sure that all the ripped files including VIDEO_TS.IFO from one DVD title will be located in one folder.
VIDEO_TS.IFO file doesn’t appear If you can not find VIDEO_TS.IFO file among all the ripped files
from an original DVD title, the DVD manager function will not work.

Chapter 7: Format the Built-in HDD via USB

If the assembled HDD is not formatted, a PC will not detect the hard disk drive. If your harddisk is not formatted,follow the below mentioned instructions.

The example above is a good solution for Windows 2000/XP users who sometimes exchange data with Windows 98SE/ME PCs.
For storing the data under Windows 2000/XP both partitions can be used. As the NTFS file system is not recognized by Windows 98SE/ME data to be used on these operating systems must be stored on the FAT32 partition.
Please follow the steps below to adapt the MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit for your needs.

Windows 98SE only: The fdisk version which is installed together with your operating system does not recognize the correct size of hard disks larger than 64 GB.
Windows 98SE/ME: For large partitions fdisk will not display the partion size correctly! Please ignore this as the partitioning results will still be OK.

Creating a partition on the MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit under Windows 98 SE / ME
The following steps will guide you the process of creating partitions on your MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit under Windows 98SE/ME. After this procedure your Freecom MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit will be ready for use and it will be allocated a drive letter.
1. Click on the "Start" button.

6. Select the hard disk by its number where the "Usage" contains no value but only a percent symbol. Select the number of the corresponding hard disk and confirm by pressing the "Return" key.
Now your hard disk is activated and ready to be partitioned.
Note: Partition size of large hard disks will not be displayed correctly! However partitioning results will be OK.
7. Select Option 1 "(Create DOS partition or Logical DOS drive)" by pressing '1' and confirm with 'Return'.
8. Select Option 1 "(Create primary DOS partition)" by pressing '1' and confirm with 'Return'.

9. If only one partition is required then answer "Y" to the question: "Do you wish to use the maximumavailable size for a Primary DOS partition?" If more than on partition is required go to the next section "Create two or more partitions on the MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit under Windows 98 / Windows ME".
Now the whole disk will be partitioned as one primary partition. Wait until the drive integrity check is completed.
10. Press the 'ESC' key to return to the fdisk options.
11. Now press the 'ESC' key to close the "fdisk window". partitioned.
12. Stop your hard disk by using the hot unplug icon in the lower right corner of your screen and remove the USB cable from your hard disk. Afterwards connect your hard disk again with your computer. The hard disk will now be recognized by Windows.
As Windows tries to access your hard disk an error message will appear. This happens, because your hard disk is not yet formatted.
Creating two or more partitions on the MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit under Windows 98SE / ME
1. Repeat steps 1 to 7 from the previous chapter (Create one partition on the MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit under Windows 98SE/Windows ME).
2. Answer the question "Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a primary DOS partition?" with "N".
3. Enter either the size or a percentage value for the partition size. Press 'Return' and wait until the drive integrity check is completed.
4. Press the 'ESC' key to return to the fdisk options.
5. Select Option 1 "(Create DOS partition or Logical DOS drive)" by pressing '1' and confirm with 'Return'.
6. Select Option 2 "(Create Extended DOS Partition)" by pressing '2' and confirm with 'Return'.
7. Enter either the size or a percentage value for the partition size or press 'Return' to accept the default value.
8. Press 'ESC' to return and wait until the drive integrity check is completed.
9. A logical drive needs to be defined now. Enter the size of the logical drive and press 'Return' or accept the default value by pressing 'Return'.
10. Press 'ESC' to return to the fdisk options.
11. Now press the 'ESC' key to close the "fdisk window". partitioned.

12. Stop your hard disk by using the hot unplug icon in the lower right corner of your screen and remove the USB cable from your hard disk. Afterwards connect your hard disk again with your computer. The hard disk will now be recognized by Windows.

Formatting partitions on the MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit under Windows 98SE / ME
1. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.
2. Click with the right mouse button on the drive symbol of your MediaPlayer­25 Drive-In Kit. Now a menu will appear where you can choose the option "Format".
3. Please perform a complete formatting of your drive. name to your drive here.
4. After you have completed your selection, click on "Start".
Attention: Selecting the wrong drive will lead to a loss of your data. Please ensure that the correct drive is selected!
5. Confirm the next message with "OK".
6. After formatting is finished you can perform a disk scan. To do so, follow the instructions of the Windows Help system. If you don't want to scan your disk, just close the message window.
Repeat these steps for each partition if more than one partition was created.
Now your MediaPlayer-25 Drive-In Kit is ready for use. You can use it like an internal hard disk for storing your data.

The following steps will explain how to delete a partition on your MediaPlayer­25 Drive-In Kit.
1. Click on the "Start" button.
2. Select "Run".
3. Enter "fdisk" and confirm with "OK".
4. fdisk will be started. Answer the question "Do you wish to enable large disk support?" by pressing the 'Return' key. FAT32 is now activated.
