Installing Batteries
Installing a Book Card
The BOOKMAN 440 model uses two CR-2032 lithium batteries. Here is how to install or replace them.
Warning: When the batteries lose power or are removed from your BOOKMAN, information that you have entered in its built-in book as well as in any installed book card will be erased.
1. Turn your BOOKMAN over.
2. Slide off its battery cover in the direction of the triangle.
3. Install the batteries with their plus signs facing you.
4. Replace the battery cover
Resuming Where You Left Off
You can turn off your BOOKMAN at any time. When you turn on your BOOKMAN, the screen that you last viewed appears.
Warning: Never install or remove a book card while your BOOKMAN is turned on. If you do, information that you entered in its built-in book, as well as in any other installed book cards, will be erased.
1. Turn your BOOKMAN off.
2. Turn your BOOKMAN over.
3. Align the tabs on the book card with the notches in the slot.
4. Press the book card down until it snaps into place.

Warning: When you remove a book card to install another, information that you entered in the removed book card will be erased.

Once you have installed a book card in your BOOKMAN, you can select which book you want to use. Follow these steps.

About Screen Illustrations
Some screen illustrations in this User’s Guide may differ from what you see on the screen. This does not mean that your BOOKMAN is malfunctioning.
The red, green, yellow, and blue keys on the top row of your BOOKMAN change their functions according to which book you have selected.
If you have selected the built-in book, the color keys function as labeled on the BOOKMAN keyboard. If you have se­lected a book card, the color keys func­tion as labeled on that card.
Remember, when you’ve selected a book card, the color keys function as labeled on that card, not as on the keyboard.

Changing Settings
Viewing the Demonstration
From the Other menu, you can adjust the type size, the shutoff time and the screen contrast.
Set Type Size
changes the number of lines of text that appear on the screen.
Set Shutoff
changes how long your BOOKMAN stays turned on if you forget to turn it off.
Set Contrast
allows
you to make the screen lighter or darker.

Finding Movies by Theme
Using the Locate Menu
There are over 550 searchable themes

, and most of the movies have 10 themes or more. Themes are the subject matter of the films (e.g.,

etc.). You can also look for films that share one or more themes.

Using the Locate Menu
Awards
You can find movies that have won one or more major Academy Awards. The Awards category lists those 29 major awards for which you can search. You can also look for films that received awards in more than one category (e.g., movies that won awards for Best Lead­ing Actress and Best Director).

Since all of the Academy Award titles be­gin with “Best”, it has been omitted (e.g., look for Best Leading Actor).

The Motion Picture Academy of America (MPAA) rates movies for various audi­ences using the familiar code of G, PG, R, etc. If you select more than one MPAA rating, films that match either rating.
Critic Rating

You can search for movies by selecting a critic rating. Movies are rated by one to five stars, five being the best. If you choose more than one critic rating, search for films that match either rating.

Locating Movies by Year
You can search for movies by entering a year or a year range. In the following example, we will find movies that were released in 1973.

Selecting a Range of Years
Putting It All Together
You can also find movies that were re­leased over a range of years. In the follow­ing example we will search for movies that were released between 1981 and 1987.

You cannot select more than one range of years (i.e., you cannot select movie between 1981-1987 and movies between 1991-1993). If you select another year, your range will be deselected.

you may fine-tune your searches even further by selecting mul­tiple search items in a single search. The combinations of search items are virtu­ally endless. In this example, we will look for PG-13 movies that feature Kevin Costner and were released in 1994.

Games
You can limit the number of years with which you play the games by selecting

from the Games list. Only titles within the selected year range will be used in the games.
You select a year range from the Games menu the same way that you would select a year range from the Locate menu. See “Selecting a Range of Years” for more detail.

Hangman challenges you to guess a mystery cast member, indicated by ?’s, one letter at a time. As you type letters, your correct guesses appear in place of the question marks, and your wrong guesses appear below.

If the BOOKMAN keyboard fails to re­spond, or if its screen performs errati-

more than very light pressure may perma­nently disable your BOOKMAN. In addition, resetting your BOOKMAN unit erases set­tings and information entered into its built­in book, and in any installed books.

2. Use a paper clip to gently press BOOKMAN’s reset button.
The reset button is recessed in a pin­sized hole on the back of your BOOKMAN. Look for it on the battery cover or near the book card slot.
This unit may change operating modes due to Electro-static Discharge. Normal operation of this unit can be re-estab­lished by pressing the reset key,
