Getting Started

The first time that you use this product, do this:
1. Press ON/OFF.
A brief demonstration appears. You can stop the demonstration by pressing EFF.
2. Press A or B to choose the message language.
When you choose the message language, the demonstration is disabled.
3. Press the screen contrast.
You can adjust the screen contrast only at a clear entry screen.
Enabling the Demonstration
To view the demonstration again, first press MENU. Then press

Auto-Shutoff and Auto-Resume
If you forget to turn off this product, it will automatically shut off after a few minutes. When you turn it on again, the screen that you last viewed appears.

Changing Languages

T o Change the Message Language
The message language is the language of help, entry screens, and pop-up messages.
1. Press MENU.
2. Press A or B to select a language.
T o Change the Entry Language
The entry language is the language in which you enter words to translate or define.
1. Press EFF.
2. Press LANG to change the language
Viewing Help Messages
You can view help messages at most screens by pressing AIDE. To read the help, press press ARR. While viewing help, you can press LANG to change the language.
Follow the Arrows
The arrows at the right of the screen show which arrow keys you can press to scroll.

T ranslating W ords

To translate or define a word in either lan­guage, simply type the word and press ENTRER. You don’t need to type accents, capitals, or punctuation.
1. Press EFF.
2. T ype one or more words.
To erase a letter, press ARR. To type a space, press ESPACE.
3. Press ENTRER to view translation(s).
4. Press
5. Press EFF to clear your entry .
Accenting Letters
If you want to type an accent over a letter, first type the letter and then press until the desired accent appears.
Understanding T ranslations
In translations, main words are boldfaced and their parts of speech are italicized. Us­ages are indicated in standard brackets, with specialized usages capitalized. Gen­ders and tenses are in slanted brackets.

Viewing Inflections

You can view inflections of nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
1. T ype or enter a word.
2. Press CONJ.

If the word you typed or entered is a verb press CONJ repeatedly to view its other conjugations.
5. Press or ESPACE to read them.
6. Press EFF when done.
Selecting Parts of Speech
Some words have more than one part of speech. So when you press CONJ, a list of their parts of speech appears. Highlight the word that you want and then press ENTRER to view its inflections.
Learning About Words
T o learn about parts of speech, press AIDE twice when translations are in view.
T o learn how and when to use inflections, press AIDE once when inflections are in view . T o return to the inflections, press ARR.

Highlighting Words

You can also highlight a word in a translation and then translate that word or view its inflec­tions.
1. Press EFF.
2. Type a word.
3. Press ENTRER.
4. Press ENTRER again.
Notice the highlight. You can turn off the highlight now by pressing ARR.
5. Press the arrow keys to highlight a word.
6. Press ENTRER to view its translation(s) or CONJ to view its inflections.
If you highlighted a verb, you can view its other inflections by pressing CONJ repeatedly.
If you press ARR, the word that you highlighted appears.
7. Press EFF when done.

Product Care

Model: DBF-116 Dimensions: 6.9 x 10.1 x 0.8 cm Weight: 2 oz.
Replacing the Battery: This product uses one CR2032, 3-volt lithium battery. Should you need to replace the battery, unscrew the screws on the back with a very fine screwdriver and carefully remove the back cover. Then install a new battery, plus sign facing you, and re­place the cover.
Battery Instructions
1. Different types of batteries or new and used batteries are not to be
mixed.
2. Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended are to
be used.
3. Batteries are to be inserted with the correct polarity.
4. Exhausted batteries should be removed.
5. The supply terminals are not to be short-circuited.
Cleaning, Storage, Problems: To clean, spray a mild glass cleaner onto a cloth and wipe its surface. Do not spray liquids directly on this product. Do not use or store this product in extreme or prolonged heat, cold, humidity, or other adverse conditions. If you have a prob­lem with this product, refer to the warranty. If you purchased this prod­uct outside the United States, contact the place of purchase to obtain warranty or repair information.

Limited Warranty (outside U.S.)

This product, excluding batteries, is guaran­teed by Franklin for a period of one year from the date of purchase. It will be repaired or re­placed with an equivalent product (at Franklin’s option) free of charge for any defect due to faulty workmanship or materials.
Products purchased outside the United States that are returned under warranty should be re­turned to the original vendor with proof of pur­chase and description of fault. Charges will be made for all repairs unless valid proof of pur­chase is provided.
This warranty explicitly excludes defects due to misuse, accidental damage, or wear and tear. This guarantee does not affect the consumer’s statutory rights.
This unit may change operating modes due to Electrostatic Discharge. Normal operation of this unit can be re-established by pressing the reset key, placing batteries.
