Introduction

The BR-1000 Bill Reader is a handheld device for the blind and visually impaired that uses Evolution Robotics’ ViPR® (Visual Pattern Recognition) object recognition and identication technology with an imbedded digital camera and speaker to immediately determine the denominations of U.S. paper currency/notes.
Simply hold the BR-1000 over a single U.S. dollar bill (each bill must be identied one at a time), with the camera lens pointing towards the bill and approximately 3 to 8-inches away from the bill. Press the large CAPTURE button in the top corner of the unit to take a picture of the bill, determine the denomination and
BR-1000
speak the value of the note in English or Spanish. It is capable of identifying all current and recent versions/designs of U.S. paper currency, including the One Dollar bill, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills.

Information

Adjusting the Sound
Press the volume button to raise or lower the volume. There are ve (5) selectable volume levels. A short beep, each time, indicates when the sound has been increased or decreased.
Automatic Power-o
The Bill Reader has a built-in automatic shut-o feature to save battery power. If the unit is left idle for over one minute with the ON/OFF switch in the ON position, the unit will go into a power-saving “sleep” mode and speak “Turning o” to notify the user. Pressing the CAPTURE button while scanning a bill will automatically turn the unit back on from “sleep” mode and it will scan the bill.
When the unit is not in use, turn it completely o by sliding the ON/OFF switch to OFF. This will best conserve battery power.
Low Battery Warning
This product has an automatic battery level detection feature. The battery will be checked if the CAPTURE button is pressed in the power saving mode. If the battery falls below a critical level, you will hear a warning message “Warning. Battery power is low. Please change batteries soon.” Change the batteries as soon as possible.
Automatic Illumination
This unit is equipped with a White LED ash for illumination. The camera module will automatically detect the ambient light intensity automatically. If the lighting is not enough, it will turn on the LED to ensure proper recognition.

Operating the Bill Reader

1. Slide the ON/OFF button to the ON position.
The unit will speak “Turning on.”
2. Set the Language Selection switch to English.
3. Hold the reader with the camera pointing at the paper U.S. Currency (“bill”) at approximately 4-inches to 10-inches from the bill, directly over the bill and as close to a 90-degree angle to the bill as possible.
Note: The bill should lie at.
4. Press the CAPTURE button to activate the reader.
You will hear the message “Turning On”. The reader will complete the recognition
within 2 seconds. If the recognition is successful, it will speak the value of the bill.
Page 3
5. Change another bill and press the CAPTURE button to start another recognition.
If you hear the message “Please try again” then the unit cannot read the dollar bill either because the unit is tilted at an angle that prevents the unit from capturing a clear, clean, sharp image of the bill, the camera is too close (less than 3.5”) or too far (more than 10”) from the bill, the camera is not pointed directly at the bill, or the bill is not recognizable because it may not be a U.S. dollar bill. Try reading the bill again by re-aligning the Bill Reader to the bill and pressing the CAPTURE button.
6. If you have nished reading all the bills, leave the unit alone. The unit will enter power saving mode automatically if it is idle for 1 minute. You will hear the message “Turning O”. For maximum power saving, slide the ON/OFF button to the OFF position.
Switching between English
and Spanish
This product supports both English and Spanish. Slide the LANGUAGE SELECTION switch to select the desired language. If you slide the switch when the unit is operating, you will hear either “Language selection button is set to English” or “Language selection button is set to Spanish” (spoken in Spanish) according to the switch position and the language selected.
