(1.4301) stainless steel and comply with UK Department of Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) 63 and 64
guideline specifications.
Sissons developed many of the products in conjunction with the UK authorities to provide the most ideal
combination of cleanliness, function and durability for a medical environment. Special units are also manufactured
to suit particular site requirements and can be manufactured in grade 316 (1.4404) stainless steel material to

hospital, medical and laboratory applications. The unique Duomatic and Trimatic taps, for example, dispense water,
soap and disinfectant from the same spout with out the need to touch the product. Wall mounted no touch soap
dispensers suitable for disinfectants and no touch paper towel dispensers are also available.
A full range of stainless steel grab rails are also available for use in ward and toilet areas with specially made

Introduction to HTM 63 & 64
Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) are a series of documents “which provide specification and design guidance on building components for health buildings which are not adequately covered by current British Standards.”¹
The HTM 63 document covers fitted storage systems suitable for health buildings such as cupboards, open storage units, shelves, drawer units and worktops. The document recommends that worktops to be manufactured in either linoleum faced material, plastic laminate faced material or stainless steel.
The recommendation to use stainless steel for plain worktops is where durability and strength are the main performance criteria. For worktops requiring dished, sink bowls, drainers and hopper units stainless steel is the recommended material where these elements can be incorporated at an economical cost. The worktop profile required for all materials has recommended front and rear radii and finished section sizes which can be achieved in stainless steel using purpose made tooling.
HTM 63 AND
HTM 64
Copies of the most recent copy of HTM documents can be obtained from HMSO via the web site: www.tso.co.uk/bookshop (HTM63 ISBN 0113212429, HTM64 ISBN 0113217625).
The HTM 64 document covers sanitary products such as Urinals, WCs, Basins, Baths, Plaster sinks, Scrub-up troughs and Disposal units. Certain products are recommended to be made in ceramic material and others in stainless steel according to the application. The recommendation to use stainless steel is, in some cases, due to the size and shape of the unit would be unsuitable to be manufactured in ceramic. For other products, such as sinks and bowls, stainless steel is the accepted material for this type of unit where durability and strength are the main performance criteria.
The guidance given in the HTM 64 document is for ducted services and surface mounted service installations. The document also includes details of recommended fixing heights, material type and finishes and fittings for water and waste.
Other Information Sources
Health Technical Memoranda are available on the “design, installation and running of specialised building systems”¹ and relating to HTM 63 and 64 are HTM 68 on duct and panel assemblies and HTM 71 on materials management modular storage.
Additional information relating to Hospital and Medical fittings can be found in Health Building Notes (HBN) which are “a series giving advice to project teams designing and planning new buildings and adapting or extending existing buildings.”²
Health Guidance Notes (HGN) are also available which is “an occasional series of publications which respond to changes in Department of Health policy or reflect changing NHS operational management. Each (HGN) deals with a specific topic and is complimentary to a related Health Technical Memoranda.”²
