THE FOSTER-BARKER 3-JAW WRENCHLESS CHUCK
The Foster-Barker three jaw chuck can
he applied to almost any type of chucking
machine, and \\:11 handle any work re'
quiring a three jaw chuck of comparative
The outstanding value of this chuck
size
to the user is its rapidity of operation,
extreme gripping power,
and that the
Foster-Barker chuck grips either externally
or internally. However, for internal grip-
the location of the lever base and
ping
“dog" differ from those used external
gripping (sec page 9).
Every Foster-Barker Chuck has a steel
body and is equipped with reversible step
d
jaws. The action of the jaws is universal
through movement of the lever, and indc-
pendent through an adjusting screw pro
vided for each jaw. A frictional device in
each adjusting screw eliminates all ten
dency lor movement of the screw when
the jaws arc used universally through
movement of the lever. For machining
special form jaws see page 6, and for
fitting to spindle see pages 7 and 8.
Included with each three jaw chuck is
one set of step jaws, an adjusting wrench
and unless otherwise ordered a lever base
and dog attached for external gripping.

MACHINING SPECIAL JAWS
The important part of the work preliminary to turn
ing or boring chuck jaws for Foster-Barker wrenchlcss
chucks is the location of the proper position of the lever
and locking the jaws for the required machining opera
tions. To locate the lever position push upward until
the jaws have reached the extreme opening movement.
Pulling the lever forward from this position imparts a
rapid closing action to the jaws at the start, but ending
in a continued slow inward movement. The lever should
be locked in the position where it starts imparting the
latter motion at the ending of the rapid closing action.
To lock the position thus obtained, a disk, or casting
just entering the opening of the jaws may be rigidly
chucked by pulling the lever a small distance further
forward. It is well to chuck the disk or casting between
the hardened front jaws as it will leave all portions of
the blank jaw accessible to the boring and turning tools
used in machining them. The jaws may be adjusted in
dependently—
advantage. The method of procedure just given applies
to the external gripping types but is followed in almost
identical manner on those for internal gripping. The
quick action to the jaws of the latter, starts outward
from the extreme closed position and ends in their con
tinued slow outward travel. At the beginning of the
slow outward movement a ring having set screws so
located that they will be in cantact with the outer ends
of the front jaws should be solidily chucked internally
after locking—to the position of greatest
by a pull on the lever, the latter being arranged for in
tcrnal gripping as described on page 13.
In the making of special jaws the avoidance of straight
line bearing surfaces is to be recommended and is ob
tainable by relieving the central portions of the bearing
surfaces. Caution must be used that the jaw will not be
weakened at points sustaining the pressure.
The extreme gripping power inherent with Foster-
Barker Chucks should be kept in mind when designing
special jaws. On cylindrical shells and similar work the
bearing surfaces of the jaws should almost entirely sur
round the work. Castings should always be gripped on
their strongest portions.
Greatest economy can be effected by ordering the
blank jaws from our factory stock. These are drilled,
tongued and grooved all on a productive basis enabling
us to supply the purchaser promptly and at the lowest
possible cost.
We have every facility for the making of special form
jaws and there is no doubt but that we can save money
for every purchaser requiring them. In addition we h.ive
splendid engineering service to offer. We will gladly
give you all information along with estimated costs, on
just what you may require for your chucking upon
receipt of samples or blue prints. This service while
free, is valuable and reliable but it does not place any
obligation on the user.
MASTER JAW SPECIFICATIONS
We will supply blue prints of the master jaws used
in any size or type Foster-Barker Chuck to users wishing chining the tongue and groove, also the correct spacing
data for fitting special jaws made in their own tool dc- of the drilled holes.
The following table covers the important dimensions of the blank jaws carried in our
factory stock. These arc suitable for the three-jaw of the sizes mentioned. Special sizes
can be supplied upon order accompanied by full specifications.

BORING AND THREADING CHUCK HUBS
The adapters standard for Foster'Barker chucks are double piloted and abutted
against the face end of the hub, thereby insuring the greatest rigidty possible to
obtain. The specifications given in the table arc the standards set for boring and
threading, to suit the adapters mentioned. We can supply the adapters fitted in
chucks with the outer end blank but must have spindle specifications that ample stock
will be provided in the blank end to cover all shouldered and threaded diameters.
As a precaution to prevent the gallding of threads a liberal coat of graphite

In setting up for threading, the body of the chuck should be clamped to the
face plate of an engine lathe. Parallel bars should rest between the face plate and
face of the chucks, and in truing, the body only should be taken in consideration as
is shown in the drawing. For clamping, the jaws should be extended outward until
possible to secure strap clamp against the back edges. In no instance must any clamp-
ing action be placed against the back ring gears or plates. This would damage the
mechanism.
The tables under column S on pages two and three show the largest diameters
that can be threaded into the hubs direct. Where bored and threaded portions of
chucks arc larger than specified an adapter as shown by drawings B or D must be
used. One end of the adapter fitted to the chucks and the other fitted to the spindle.
Specifications for boring and threading hubs for Foster standard adapters are given
in the following table:

FROM EXTERNAL
A Foster-Barker Chuck will grip either
externally or internally and unless other-
wise ordered, all Foster-Barker Chucks will
have the lever base and chuck dog attached
in position for external gripping as in figure
1 when shipped. To change the Foster-
Barker Chuck from external gripping to
internal gripping requires only the inter
changing of the positions of the chuck
dog and lever base as illustrated in figure
2.
In some instances, it is necessary to
retime the chuck in order that the lever
will be brought to convenient position for
the operator. The retiming is a very
simple process fully described in the in
struction sheet included with each chuck
when shipped.

THE ABOVE CUT SHOWS NEW WORM-OPERATED
FOSTER-BARKER CHUCK
New 15 and 18" chucks may be equipped with the worm
opening and closing feature for a small additional charge.
This type of operating mechanism is less fatiguing to the
operator and is more convenient when removing and replacing
work. It also has the added advantage of being equipped with
a clutch, which may be adjusted to exert a desired chucking pres'
sure, and after the selected pressure is reached, the clutch slips,
and no greater pressure can be exerted until a readjustment is
made.
This feature is of lasting value, as it prevents distortion of
work from excess chucking pressure, eliminates the uncertainty
of relying on the operator's judgment and skill results in accurate
work and eliminates rejections from distortion.
