PLANNING
Plan where you will install the rebox. This will
save time and money later when you install
the rebox. Before installation, consider the
following:
1. Where the rebox will be located. Allow for
wall and ceiling clearances (see Installa-tion Clearances, page 9).
2.
Everything needed to complete installation.
3. This model CANNOT be installed in a
bedroom or bathroom.
4. Proper air for combustion and ventilation.
5. Consider a location where heat output
would not be affected by drafts, air condition ducts, windows or doors.
6. A location that minimizes modications
on existing framing will make installation
easier.
Projected installations can extend any
distance into the room. A projection may
be ideal as a partition between two otherwise common areas when added to an
existing, nished wall (see Figure 2).

AIR FOR COMBUSTION AND VENTILATION
WARNING: This heater shall
not be installed in a room or
space unless the required volume of indoor combustion air
is provided by the method described in the National Fuel Gas
Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54, the
International Fuel Gas Code, or
applicable local codes. Read the
following instructions to insure
proper fresh air for this and
other fuel-burning appliances
in your home.
Today’s homes are built more energy efcient
than ever. New materials, increased insulation
and new construction methods help reduce
heat loss in homes. Home owners weather
strip and caulk around windows and doors
to keep the cold air out and the warm air in.
During heating months, home owners want
their homes as airtight as possible.
While it is good to make your home energy
efcient, your home needs to breathe. Fresh
air must enter your home. All fuel-burning ap-
pliances need fresh air for proper combustion
and ventilation.
Exhaust fans, reboxes, clothes dryers and fuel
burning appliances draw air from the house to
operate. You must provide adequate fresh air
for these appliances. This will insure proper
venting of vented fuel-burning appliances.
PROVIDING ADEQUATE
VENTILATION
The following are excerpts from National
Fuel Gas Code ANS Z223.1/NFPA 54,Air for
Combustion and Ventilation.
All spaces in homes fall into one of the three
following ventilation classications:
1. Unusually Tight Construction
2. Unconned Space
3. Conned Space
The information on pages 6 through 8 will help
you classify your space and provide adequate
ventilation.
Unusually Tight Construction
The air that leaks around doors and windows
may provide enough fresh air for combustion
and ventilation. However, in buildings of unusually tight construction, you must provide
additional fresh air.
Unusually tight construction is dened as
construction where:
a. walls and ceilings exposed to the out-
side atmosphere have a continuous
water vapor retarder with a rating of one
perm (6 x 10
with openings gasketed or sealed and
b. weather stripping has been added on
openable windows and doors and
c. caulking or sealants are applied to
areas such as joints around window
and door frames, between sole plates
and oors, between wall-ceiling joints,
between wall panels, at penetrations
for plumbing, electrical and gas lines
and at other openings.
If your home meets all of the three criteria
above, you must provide additional fresh
air. See Ventilation Air From Outdoors,
page 8.
If your home does not meet all of the three
criteria above, proceed to Determining
Fresh-Air Flow for Firebox Location,
page 7.
Conned and Unconned Space
The National Fuel Gas Code ANS Z223.1/
NFPA 54 denes a conned space as a space
whose volume is less than 50 cubic feet per
1,000 Btu/hr (4.8 m
input rating of all appliances installed in that
space and an unconned space as a space
whose volume is not less than 50 cubic feet
per 1,000 Btu/hr (4.8 m3 per kw) of the ag-
gregate input rating of all appliances installed
in that space. Rooms communicating directly
with the space in which the appliances are
installed*, through openings not furnished
with doors, are considered a part of the unconned space.
This heater shall not be installed in a conned
space or unusually tight construction unless
provisions are provided for adequate combus-
tion and ventilation air.
* Adjoining rooms are communicating only if
there are doorless passageways or ventilation
grills between them.

DETERMINING FRESH-AIR FLOW
FOR FIREBOX LOCATION
Determining if You Have a Conned or
Unconned Space
Use this work sheet to determine if you have
a conned or unconned space.
Space: Includes the room in which you will
install heater plus any adjoining rooms with
doorless passageways or ventilation grills
between the rooms.
1. Determine the volume of the space (length
x width x height).
Length x Width x Height =__________cu. ft.
(volume of space)
Example: Space size 22 ft. (length) x 18 ft.
(width) x 8 ft. (ceiling height) = 3168 cu. ft.
(volume of space)
If additional ventilation to adjoining room
is supplied with grills or openings, add the
volume of these rooms to the total volume
of the space.
2. Multiply the space volume by 20 to determine
the maximum Btu/Hr the space can support.
________ (volume of space) x 20 = (Maxi-
mum Btu/Hr the space can support)
Example: 3168 cu. ft. (volume of space) x 20
= 63,360 (maximum Btu/Hr the space can
support)
3. Add the Btu/Hr of all fuel burning appliances
in the space.
Gas water heater* __________ Btu/Hr
Gas furnace __________ Btu/Hr
Vented gas heater __________ Btu/Hr
Gas replace logs __________ Btu/Hr
Other gas appliances* + _________ Btu/Hr
Total = _________ Btu/Hr
* Do not include direct-vent gas appliances.
Direct-vent draws combustion air from the
outdoors and vents to the outdoors.
Example:
Gas water heater __________ Btu/HrGas rebox logs + _________ Btu/Hr
Total = _________ Btu/Hr
40,000
39,000
79,000
4. Compare the maximum Btu/Hr the space
can support with the actual amount of Btu/
Hr used.
_______ Btu/Hr (maximum the space can
support)
_______ Btu/Hr (actual amount of Btu/Hr
used)
Example: 63,36 0 Btu/Hr (maximu m the
space can support)
79,000 Btu/Hr (actual amount of
Btu/Hr used)
The space in the above example is a conned
space because the actual Btu/Hr used is more
than the maximum Btu/Hr the space can sup-
port. You must provide additional fresh air.
Your options are as follows:
A. Rework work sheet, adding the space
of an adjoining room. If the extra space
provides an unconned space, remove
door to adjoining room or add ventilation
grills between rooms. See Ventilation Air from Inside Building, page 8.
B. Vent room directly to the outdoors. See
Ventilation Air from Outdoors, page 8.
C. Install a lower Btu/Hr gas log heater, if
lower Btu/Hr size makes room unconned.
If the actual Btu/Hr used is less than the
maximum Btu/Hr the space can support, the
space is an unconned space. You will need
no additional fresh air ventilation.
WARNING: If the area in which
the heater may be operated does
not meet the required volume for
indoor combustion air, combustion and ventilation air shall be
provided by one of the methods
described in the National Fuel
Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54,
the International Fuel Gas Code,
or applicable local codes.

VENTILATION AIR
Ventilation Air From Inside Building
This fresh air would come from an adjoining
unconned space. When ventilating to an
adjoining unconned space, you must provide
two permanent openings: one within 12" of the
ceiling and one within 12" of the oor on the
wall connecting the two spaces (see option
1, Figure 3). You can also remove door into
adjoining room (see option 2, Figure 3). Follow the National Fuel Gas Code ANS Z223.1/
NFPA 54 Air for Combustion and Ventilation
for required size of ventilation grills or ducts.
Figure 3 - Ventilation Air from Inside
Building
Ventilation Air From Outdoors
Provide extra fresh air by using ventilation
grills or ducts. You must provide two permanent openings: one within 12" of the ceiling
and one within 12" of the oor. Connect these
items directly to the outdoors or spaces open
to the outdoors. These spaces include at-
tics and crawl spaces. Follow the National
Fuel Gas Code ANS Z223.1/NFPA 54 Air for
Combustion and Ventilation for required size
of ventilation grills or ducts.
IMPORTANT: Do not provide openings for
inlet or outlet air into attic if attic has a thermo-
stat-controlled power vent. Heated air entering
the attic will activate the power vent.

CAUTION: Log heaters in-
stalled in this rebox create warm
air currents. These currents move
heat to wall surfaces next to rebox. Installing rebox next to vinyl
or cloth wall coverings or operating rebox where impurities (such
as, but not limited to, tobacco
smoke, aromatic candles, clean-
ing uids, oil or kerosene lamps,
etc.) in the air exist, may discolor
walls or cause odors.
IMPORTANT: Vent-free gas log heaters add
moisture to the air. Although this is benecial,
installing rebox in rooms without enough
ventilation air may cause mildew to form from
too much moisture. See Air for Combustion
and Ventilation, page 6.
IMPORTANT: Make sure the rebox is level.
If rebox is not level, log set will not work
properly.
Note: Your rebox is designed to be used in
zero clearance installations. Wall or framing
material can be placed against any exterior surface on the rear, sides or top of your
rebox, except where standoff spacers are
integrally attached. If standoff spacers are
attached to your rebox, these spacers can
be placed directly against wall or framing
materials.
Use dimensions shown for rough openings
to create the easiest installation (see Built-In
Firebox Installation, page 9).

Mantel Clearances for Built-In
Installation
If placing custom mantel above built-in rebox, you must meet the minimum allowable
clearance between mantel shelf and top of
rebox opening shown in Figure 7. These are
the minimum allowable mantel clearances
for a safe installation. Use larger clearances
wherever possible to minimize the heating of
objects and materials placed on the mantel.
CAUTION: Do not allow the
vent-free gas log heater to touch
or extend beyond the rebox
screen.
If your installation does not meet the above
minimum clearances in Figure 7, you must:
• raise the mantel to an acceptable height,
OR
• remove the mantel.
BUILT-IN FIREBOX INSTALLATION
Built-in installation of this rebox involves
installing rebox into a framed-in enclosure.
This makes the front of rebox ush with
wall. Optional perimeter brass trim accessories are available (see Accessories, page
17). The brass trim will extend past sides of
rebox approximately 1/2". This will cover the
rough edges of the wall opening. If installing
a mantel above the rebox, you must follow
the clearances shown in Figure 7. Follow the
instructions below to install the rebox in this
manner.
1. Frame in rough opening. The firebox
framing should be constructed of 2 x 4
lumber or heavier. Construct framing
using dimensions shown in Figure 8 and
9, page 11. It is recommended that the
framing be constructed rst and the unit
be placed in position by removing the
nailing anges from one side. After sliding
the unit into place, the outer most anges
may be replaced and nailed to the framing
on all sides before applying the wallboard
to the exterior framing.
2. If the vent-free rebox is to be installed
directly on carpeting, tile (other than ce-
ramic) or any combustible material other
than wood ooring; the vent-free rebox
must be installed upon a metal or wood
panel extending the full width and depth
of the vent-free rebox.
3. If a raised platform is to be constructed,
ceiling clearances must be maintained.

INSTALLING GAS LINE
WARNING: A qualied service person must connect heater
to gas supply. Follow all local
codes.
IMPORTANT: See Connecting to Gas Supply
in your log set owner’s manual for details on
gas hookup.
You may run the gas line from either side of
the rebox (see Figure 11, page 12). When
you have determined how the gas line will run,
locate one of the recessed knockouts in the
rebrick oor (see Figure 12, page 12). Firmly
tap the center of the knockout with a chisel
until it is released. Carefully chisel the rough
edges of the hole you have made to smooth
edges. This hole will line up with the hole in
the metal oor.

CAUTION: Do not use exces-
sive force to remove the knock-
out. Too much force may damage
the rebrick concrete insert.
A manual shutoff valve, complying with the
National Fuel Gas code, ANS Z223.1/NFPA
54, must be included within 6' of the vent-
free rebox gas supply system. It may be
convenient to install the gas shutoff outside
the vent-free rebox enclosure where it can
be accessed with a key through a wall as
shown in Figure 13. Depending on the type
of installation, some local codes may require
you to install 2 manual shutoff valves independently accessible from both rooms. Check
your local codes for applicable installation
requirements.
A 36" long 1/2" NPT SCHD 40 exible gas
connector line complying with the National Fuel Gas code ANS Z223.1/NFPA 54, may
be run from the regulator to the incoming 1/2"
NPT black iron gas line. You may also route
the incoming 1/2" NPT black iron gas line
directly to the appliance regulator.
The incoming gas line may be routed into the
vent-free rebox either from the left or right
hand sides (see Figure 11). Remove the gas
line cover plate from the vent-free rebox’s
outer surround at the location to be used.
If a sediment trap is not incorporated as a part
of the gas utilization equipment, one shall be

Complete your gas installation by connecting
the incoming gas line to the appliance regula-
tor. Secure all joints tightly with wrench but do
not overtighten. If a exible gas line is used,
take care not to kink the connector.
WARNING: All gas piping
and connections must be tested
for leaks after the installation is
completed. After ensuring that
the manual shutoff gas valve is
open, apply a soap and water
solution to all connections and
joints. If bubbles appear, leaks
can be detected and corrected.
DO NOT USE OPEN FLAME FOR
LEAK TESTING AND DO NOT
OPERATE ANY APPLIANCE IF
A LEAK IS DETECTED.
GAS SUPPLY TESTING
Note: This section is intended as a guide for
qualied technicians installing gas to this
vent-free rebox.
CAUTION: Do not connect
vent-free heater before pressure
testing gas piping. Damage to
gas valve may result and an un-
safe condition may be caused.
The appliance and its’ individual shutoff valve
must be disconnected from the gas supply
piping system during any pressure testing of
that system at test pressures in excess of 1/2
psig (3.5 kPa).
The appliance must be isolated from the gas
supply piping system by closing manual shutoff valve during any pressure testing of the gas
supply piping system at test pressures equal
to or less than 1/2 psig (3.5 kPa).
HARD-WIRING FIREBOX
Model UVC-ST only can be hard-wired to the
duplex outlet located inside the rebox bottom
if desired. This allows the blower accessory to
be plugged into the duplex outlet.
NOTICE: A qualied electrician
must connect electrical wiring to
duplex outlet for built-in installation. Follow all local codes. In
absence of local codes follow
The National Electric Code ANS/
NFPA 70.
ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
A model blower system assembly is available for use with the UVC-ST only vent-free
rebox as an optional accessory. This blower
is designed to be installed on either side of
the UVC-ST only rebox, when provisions
for a 120 VAC supply connection are made
at either end of the cabinet. Use of a blower
system other than those manufactured by FMI
PRODUCTS, LLC voids the warranty.
Electrical connections are made within the
receptacle with wires that are routed through
the bushing provided (see Figure 15). The
receptacle may be relocated to either side,
when necessary. However, the cover plate
must be replaced over the unused access
point. Be certain to properly ground the ventfree rebox using the green grounding wire
(see Figure 17 on page 14).

OPERATING GUIDELINES AND MAINTENANCE
INSTRUCTIONS
When lit for the rst time, a vent-free log
heater will emit a slight odor for about an hour
or two. This is a normal occurrence which is
due to the “curing” of the logs and the “burn-in”
of internal paints and lubricants used in the
manufacturing process.
Keep control compartments, logs, burners
and areas surrounding the logs clean by
vacuuming or brushing at least twice a year.
Temporary removal of the log set may ease
the cleaning of the burner and pilot assembly.
In cleaning, take care not to alter the settings
on the pilot assembly. See the operating
instructions supplied with your vent-free log
heater for additional cleaning instructions.
WARNING: Logs can be very
hot! Allow logs to cool before
handling.
IMPORTANT: Turn off the gas supply at the
external shutoff valve before servicing appliance. Any safety screen or guard removed for
servicing must be replaced prior to operating
the appliance.
Installation and repair should be done by a
qualied person. The appliance should be
inspected before use and at least annually by
a professional service person. More frequent
cleaning may be required due to excessive lint
from carpeting, pet hair, etc. It is imperative
that the control compartments, burners and
circulating air passageways of the appliance
be kept clean.
WARNING: Children and
adults should be alerted to the
hazards of high surface temperatures and to stay away to avoid
burns or clothing ignition. Young
children should be carefully
supervised when they are in the
same room as the appliance.
For lighting and operating this vent -free
rebox, please refer to the vent-free gas logs
manufacturer’s instruction manual.
