The Fletcher Oval/Circle Glass Cutter will score
circles from 4-1/4 to 21-1/2 inches wide, (108mm to
546mm). In addition, it will score ovals up to 3
inches, (75mm), longer than their width. The largest
oval is 21-1/2 inches wide by 24-1/2 inches long,
(546mm by 622mm).

You should think of a circle as an oval whose width
and length are the same. An oval is defined by
"width" and "off-set" where the "off-set" is the
difference between width and length. Therefore, an
oval 5 by 8 inches (125mm by 200mm) is 5 inches
(125mm) wide with an off-set of 3 inches (75mm).

To set the width, loosen the brass nut (A) under the
pivot knob (B) and slide the cutting head (C) to read
the desired width dimension on the beam scale (D).

the brass nut.
Set the off-set by loosening the knob (E) on top of

the base. Slide the off-set plate (F) so its left end
aligns with the desired off-set on the off-set scale
which is graduated in both Metric and Imperial.
Tighten the knob. Note If you are scoring a circle, the
off-set is zero. Figure 1 shows the cutter ready for a
5 by 8 inch oval, (125mm by 200mm).

Slide the
tungsten
carbide wheel
unit into the
slot as shown
at (J), Figure

4. Place the

base on top of
a clean piece of glass which is larger than the shape
you wish to score. Allow at least 1 inch, (25mm) extra
space all around. Press down on the base and rotate
the knurled vacuum disc (G) clockwise until the
cutter adheres to the glass.

Start with the beam at about the 1 oclock position.
Slowly rotate the beam clockwise with barely enough
downward force to cause the wheel to line up with
the direction of travel, but not enough force to score
the glass. When the beam reaches the 3 or 4 oclock
position, and the wheel has lined up, apply additional
force on the pivot knob, Figure 2, and continue the
rotation until the wheel

just reaches

its starting

position. Do not score on top of a previous score.
The amount of force should be enough to create a

visible score or crack in the glass, but not enough to
produce a flaky chipped score line. Avoid too much
downward force.

Rotate the knurled vacuum disk
counterclockwise (do not force
when you feel resistance) to
release the vacuum and
remove the cutter from the
glass. Turn the glass over and
place it on a pliable surface

such as foam board or corru­gated cardboard. Use your thumb to press down on
the glass directly over the score line now visible
through the glass. When you hear a slight snap you
will see the score has progressed about an inch or
two, (25mm to 50mm), along the score line. Move
your thumb to the end of the enlarged crack and
press again. Continue this technique until the score
has been "run" all the way around the circle or oval.

Turn the glass right side up and place it on the table.
Use a Fletcher hand cutter and make three or four
scores which start about 1/8 inch, (3mm) from the
circle or oval and run completely off the glass. See
Figure 3. These are called radial cuts. Carefully
break out the radial cuts with Fletcher cut running
pliers. The scrap will separate from the circle or oval
and can be discarded.

The cutting wheel should last a long time if properly
cared for and not damaged, but If necessary, it can
be easily replaced. Pry the wheel and its metal clip
(J) out of the slot in the cutting head with a paper clip
as shown in Figure 4. Slide
a replacement wheel unit
(Order #03-131) in the slot
as far as it will go.

If after considerable use
the lower part of the head
does not swivel freely, you
may place a small drop of
light oil in the gap between
the upper and lower
sections of the head. It is
also a good idea to
lubricate the cutting wheel
axle periodically.

Der Fletcher Oval-/ Kreisschneider kann Ovale und

Sie sollten einen Kreis als ein Oval sehen, dessen
Breite und Länge gleich sind. Ein Oval wird durch
die “Breite” und das “Offset” bestimmt, wobei das
“Offset”der Unterschied zwischen der Breite und der
Länge ist. Ein Oval mit den Abmessungen 125 mm
x 200 mm ist 125 mm breit und hat ein Offset von 75
mm.

Zur Einstellung der Breite lösen Sie den
Messingmutter (A) die sich unter dem Drehknauf (B)

befindet und schieben Sie den Schneidekopf (C) auf
die gewünschte Breitenabmessung auf der Armskala
(D).

Ziehen Sie die

Messingmutter wieder fest.
Stellen Sie das Offset ein, indem Sie den Knauf (E)

auf der oberen Seite des Grundgestells lösen.
Schieben Sie die Offsetplatte (F) nach links, bis die
linke Seite der Metallplatte mit der gewünschten
Offseteinstellung auf der Offsetskala übereinstimmt.
Die Offsetskala kann in Zentimeter oder Zoll
abgelesen werden. Ziehen Sie den Knauf wieder fest
an. Hinweis: Wenn Sie einen Kreis anreißen, ist das
Offset = 0. Abbildung 1 zeigt den Schneider mit
Einstellungen für ein Oval mit den Abmessungen 125
mm x 200 mm.
