WHERE TO INSTALL YOUR BARBECUE
Fire Magic barbecues are designed for outdoor use only.
WARNING
Built-in models must be installed in masonry or other type of fireproof enclosure. The unit is not insulated, and therefore must be installed with 18" (45.7 cm) of side and back clearance from unprotected combustible materials such as wood, plastic, or stucco with wood framing, unless the R. H. Peterson approved insulating liner for this
model is also installed.
Do not install this unit under overhead combustible construction or unprotected fl ammable surfaces of any kind (see EXHAUST REMOVAL section below for exception). Do not install or use this appliance inside a building, garage, or any other covered area, including recreational vehicles or boats.
This is a slide-in type unit designed to fi t into open-front enclosures. The control panel of the unit is removable for gas hookup, servicing, and burner adjustment. The control panel must therefore be removable after installing the unit.
Note: This unit must be installed so that it can be
removed at a later date if service is required. Any protrusion into the barbecue enclosure may obstruct the frame and prevent the unit from sliding into place (see GAS SUPPLY PLUMBING REQUIREMENTS).
COMBUSTION AND COOLING AIR FLOW
Proper air fl ow must be maintained for the barbecue to perform as it was designed ( blocked, overheating and poor combustion will result. Make sure not to block the 1" (2.54 cm) front air inlet along the bottom of the barbecue control panel or the air vent openings along the outside-left and right edges of the frame.

Apply only joint compounds that are resistant to all gasses on male pipe fi ttings as required. Test each joint with soap and water solution for leaks (never use a fl ame to test for gas leaks). Make sure to tighten every joint securely. Do not use pipe joint compound to connect fl are fi ttings.
The gas supply pipe should enter from the rear wall of the enclosure behind the barbecue unit, at least 2" (5.1 cm) from either side, and between 2" (5.1 cm) and 8" (20.3 cm) above the fl oor, as illustrated by the shaded area in
Fig. 6-3.
If it is not possible to stub the gas line in from the back of
the enclosure, the connection may be made through the fl oor at the rear of the enclosure. Install the gas line stub at least 2" (5.1 cm) away from the side and back walls, but within 6" (15.2 cm) of the back wall, as illustrated by the shaded area in Fig. 6-3.
Note: An external valve in the gas line is necessary
for safety when the barbecue is not in use. It also provides for convenient maintenance and repair. A removable key is recommended in households with children.

CAUTION: Wind blowing into or across the rear oven

EXHAUST REMOVAL
If installed under a patio roof, the grill area must be fully covered by a chimney and exhaust hood. An exhaust fan with a rating of 1,000 CFM (472 liters per second) or more may be necessary to effi ciently remove smoke and other cooking by-products from the covered area.

CHECKING/CONVERTING THE BARBECUE ORIFICES
MAIN BURNER ORIFICE SIZE CHECKING/ CONVERSION
Before beginning, make sure you have the proper tools for the task.
This task requires:
• a deep 3/8" nut driver with a spacer (#6 nut)
1. Remove the grill and flavor grid from the
barbecue.
2. Release and remove the stainless steel clip,
which holds down the back end of the burner, using a screwdriver. Retain the clip.
Note: Be sure not to lose the air shutter or air
shutter spring, which will become detached when the burner is removed.
3. Remove the burner by lifting the back of the
burner up off of the inner liner shelf while pulling the front of the burner away from the orifi ce. Set the burner aside.
4. Remove the orifi ce using a 3/8" hex nut driver
with a deep socket.
Note: The drill size is stamped on the face of
each orifi ce.
5. Replace the orifice with an orifice of the
proper drill size as listed in the Product Data Tab le.
6. Replace the burner by fi rst sliding the open
end over the new orifi ce and then lowering the back end into position. The orifi ce must project deeply into the center of the burner tube.
Note: It is critical to the continued safe operation
of the burner that it be properly aligned with the orifi ce, as indicated above.
7. Reinsert the stainless steel clip using fi ngers or
pliers while holding down the back end of the burner.
8. Repeat steps 2-7 for the other main burner.
9. Replace the fl avor grid and then the grill so that
the cutout section of the grill is in front.
Note: The air shutter must be re-adjusted after
removing the burner to assure proper combustion (see the MAIN BURNER AIR SHUTTER ADJUSTMENT section).

AIR SHUTTER ADJUSTMENT

Important: The air shutters must be adjusted
after installation. If not, this appliance may not light, heat evenly, or cook properly.

2. Light the barbecue in accordance with the
LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS and burn for two minutes with the knobs on HI LIGHT and the oven open.
3. After burning for two minutes, open the air shutters, using the tip of a screwdriver, until the fl ames lift off, or appear not to be touching the burners (Fig.
8-1).
4. Begin closing the air shutters, with the tip of a screwdriver, until the fl ames appear to burn while
touching the burner ports (Fig.
8-2).
Note: You may then see short yellow tips on the
fl ames. If fl ames are a lazy yellow, open the air shutters until the fl ame is blue with yellow tipping.
Note: Barbecues, in some installations, achieve a
better air/gas mixture and will ignite more quickly if the valve is fi rst turned beyond HI LIGHT to LOW for lighting.

INSTALLATION
Perform the following checks before installing your Deluxe Gourmet barbecue:
CONNECT THE GAS SUPPLY
WARNING: A rubber or plastic connector will
rupture or leak, resulting in an explosion or serious injury if used inside the barbecue enclosure.
1. Slide your barbecue into place, making sure not
to pinch or kink the gas connector.
2. Bring the fl ex connector under the left-side
support wall of the frame (
Fig. 9-1) and
through to the regulator on the valve manifold.
3. Connect the fl ex connector to the fl ared fi tting
of regulator on the valve manifold. Support the regulator fi tting with a wrench to avoid applying excessive torque to the regulator assembly while tightening this connection securely. DO NOT use pipe compound on fl are fi ttings.
4. Turn the barbecue burner valves to the OFF
position. Turn the gas supply on. Then carefully check all gas connections for leaks with a brush and soapy water before lighting. NEVER USE
A MATCH OR OPEN FLAME TO TEST FOR LEAKS.
5. Refer to the AIR SHUTTER ADJUSTMENT
INSTRUCTIONS and LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS of this manual before replacing the barbecue face and knobs.
INSTALL THE FLAVOR GRID
Place the flavor grid directly on the burners. Center the grid over the burners with the open side up. This allows heat from burners to be evenly distributed through cooking area. The fl avor grid heats and cools quickly, making your Fire Magic barbecue very responsive to the changes you specify in grill temperature.
The fl avor grid is made of stainless steel or coated with high temperature porcelain. Either fi nish is rust resistant and may be cleaned with standard oven cleaners.
DRIP COLLECTION SYSTEM
The drip collector in this Fire Magic barbecue is part of the unit’s main frame, and is located below the burners. The drip collector has one hole that allows excess drippings to fall through during cooking. The drip collector is also useful as it allows you to brush or scrape off excess dried residue inside the barbecue directly into the drip tray.

CYLINDRE ET CONDITIONS ET CARACTÉRISTIQUES DE CONNECTEUR
a. Des cylindres et les valves de gaz de propane doivent être
maintenus en bon état et doivent être remplacés s’il y a des dommages évidents au cylindre ou à la valve.
b. Ce gril, une fois utilisé avec un cylindre, devrait être relié à
un gallon de la norme 5 (20lb.) cylindre de gaz de propane équipé d’un OPD (remplissez au-dessus du niveau le dispositif d’empêchement). L’OPD a été exigé sur tous les cylindres vendus depuis octobre 1.1998 pour empêcher le remplissage excessif.
c. Les dimensions de cylindre devraient être approximativement
12"(30.5cm) de diamètre et 18" (45.7cm) hauts. Des cylindres doivent être construits et marqués selon les caractéristiques pour des cylindres de gaz de propane du département des ETATS-UNIS du transport (D.O.T.) ou le niveau national du Canada, du CAN/CSA-B339, des cylindres, des sphères et des tubes pour le transport des marchandises dangereuses.
d. Le cylindre doit inclure un collier pour protéger la valve
de cylindre et le circuit d’alimentation de cylindre doit être assuré le retrait de vapeur.

g. Si votre cylindre de gaz de propane vient avec une prise
de la poussière, placez le bouchon anti-poussière sur la sortie de valve de cylindre toutes les fois que le cylindre n’est pas en service.
OPÉRATION DE COUPLEUR RAPIDE
Pour relier le regulator/hose à l’ajustage de précision de valve de cylindre de gaz de propane: Serrez l’écrou de main
sur le régulateur au-dessus de l’ajustage de précision de fi l de point culminant sur la valve de cylindre. Tournez l’écrou de

CYLINDER/CONNECTOR REQUIREMENTS
a. Propane-gas cylinders, valves, and hoses must be
maintained in good condition and must be replaced if there is visible damage to either the cylinder or valve. If the hose is cut or shows excessive abrasion or wear, it must be replaced before using the gas appliance (see e.).
b. This unit, when used with a cylinder, should be connected
to a standard 5-gallon (20 lb.) propane-gas cylinder equipped with an OPD (Overfi ll Prevention Device). The OPD has been required on all cylinders sold since October 1,1998, to prevent overfi lling.
c. Cylinder dimensions should be approximately 12" (30.5
cm) in diameter and 18" (45.7 cm) high. Cylinders must be constructed and marked in accordance with the

QUICK COUPLER OPERATION
To connect the regulator/hose assembly to the propane­gas cylinder valve fi tting: Press the hand nut on the regulator
over the Acme thread fi tting on the cylinder valve. Turn the hand nut clockwise to engage the threads and tighten until snug.
ENCLOSURE REQUIREMENTS
The use of pliers or a wrench should not be necessary. Only cylinders marked “propane” may be used.
To disconnect: Turn the hand nut counterclockwise until detached (Fig. 11-1).
Important: Before using the unit, and after each time the
cylinder is removed and reattached, check the hose for wear (see a.) and check all connections for leaks. Turn off the unit valves and open the main cylinder valve, then check connections with soapy water. Repair any leaks before lighting the unit.
CAUTION: Always turn the propane cylinder main valve
off after each use, and before moving the unit and cylinder or disconnecting the coupling. This valve must remain closed and the cylinder disconnected while the appliance is not in use, even though the gas fl ow is stopped by a safety feature when the coupler is disconnected.
Carefully inspect the hose assembly each time before the gas is turned on. A cracked or frayed hose must be replaced immediately.
If the appliance is stored indoors, the cylinder must be disconnected and removed. Disconnected
cylinders must be
stored outdoors, out of the reach of children, with threaded valve plugs tightly installed, and must not be stored in a
building, garage, or any other enclosed area.

FOR YOUR SAFETY, you must provide the openings listed below for drainage, replacement air, and cross-ventilation of any storage area exposed to possible leakage from gas connections, the unit, or propane cylinders.
One side of the enclosure can be left completely open to the outside, OR 4 ventilation openings must be created: Two of the openings are to be at the cylinder valve level (approx. 16” above the fl oor) and on opposite walls of the
enclosure. 2 more openings must be at the fl oor level (approx. 5” above the fl oor) and on opposite sides of the enclosure. Each opening must have a minimum of 10 sq. in. of free area. To achieve the proper ventilation, you may drill a series of holes, omit the grout from masonry joints, or replace a brick with a hardware cloth screen. If the fl oor in the cabinet is raised and the space beneath the cabinet is open to the outside, the lower ventilation openings may be in the fl oor.
Consult your gas supplier for ventilation and regulator requirements when connecting to a household propane supply.

CHECKING AND CONVERTING GAS TYPE
This unit comes from the factory confi gured for one type of gas, as marked on the label located behind the control panel, or on the interior of the unit’s enclosure.
Converting this unit to burn a different type of gas requires a conversion kit (contact your dealer for details). The professional installer who converts this unit to burn a different gas must perform the following functions:
1. Change brass gas orifi ces (included at original shipping)
on each burner to match the new gas type (see PRODUCT DATA TABLE, Table 1).
2. Switch the convertible gas regulator (if equipped) to match the new gas type (see section below).
3. Plumb the unit as appropriate for the new gas supply.
4. Apply the label for the new gas (included at original
shipping) over the old gas information found on your unit.

3. While holding the match or lighter fl ame next to the

BARBECUE SAFETY INFORMATION & MAINTENANCE
Each time you use the barbecue, make sure that:
1. The area around the barbecue is clear of fl ammable
vapors, liquids, and substances such as gasoline, yard debris, wood, etc.
2. There is no blockage of the airfl ow through the vent
space located below the face of the unit.
3. When using propane gas: a. The special ventilation openings in the enclosure
should be kept free and clear of debris (see PLANNING THE LOCATION OF THE BARBECUE).
b. If connected to a propane cylinder, the rubber
hose attached to the regulator should be carefully inspected before each use.
c. The propane cylinder, regulator, and rubber hose should
be installed in a location not subject to heating above 125° F (51° C).
4. The burner fl ames burn evenly along both sides
of each burner with a steady flame, which is mostly blue. (Refer to section on AIR SHUTTER ADJUSTMENT.) A proper fl ame pattern will ensure safe operation and optimal performance. Adjust the air shutter as needed. If burner fl ames are not normal, check the orifi ce and burner for insects or insect nests.
DRIP COLLECTION SYSTEM
The drip collector in this barbecue is part of the unit’s main frame and is located below the burners. The drip collector has slots that will allow excess drippings to fall through during cooking, while separating the fi rebox from the drip tray. Clean the drip tray after each use.
The drip collector allows you to brush or scrape residue from the barbecue’s inner liner into the drip tray. Following the manufacturers instructions and regular cleaning of the barbecue’s interior with oven cleaner, will help to prevent grease fi res.
Periodically check the burners to make sure they are clear of debris. Properly adjusted burner fl ames burn evenly along both sides of each burner with a steady fl ame (mostly blue). If burner fl ames are not normal, check the orifi ce and burner for insects or insect nests. (See section on CHECKING/CONVERTING THE BURNER ORIFICES for instructions on burner removal and replacement.)
Check the burner ports at least annually for blockage by removing the burner (see orifi ce changing instructions) and visually inspect the gas intake tube for insects and nests. A clogged tube can lead to a fi re beneath the grill.
5. The inline gas valve or gas cylinder valve is always
shut OFF when the barbecue is not in use.
6. The drip collector hole is clear and unobstructed.
Excessive grease deposits can result in a grease fi re.
7. The barbecue is free and clear from combustible
materials, gasoline, and other fl ammable vapors and liquids.
WARNING
NEVER cover the entire cooking or grill surface with griddles or pans. Overheating will occur and
burners will not perform properly when combustion heat is trapped below the cooking surface.
CAUTION: NEVER spray water on a hot gas unit.
The grill serial identifi cation number is located on the underside of the drip tray handle. It is recommended that the drip tray fi rst be removed and cleaned / emptied of its contents,
then turned over to view.

THE COOKING GRID LIFTER
Hold the grid lifter by gripping the center section with the prongs pointing down (use an oven mitt or heavy glove if the grill is hot). Insert the notched end of the grid lifter into the cooking grid, in front of the midway point (front to back; Fig. 17-3), and central (left to right; Fig. 17-4). Twist the grill lifter (clockwise or counterclockwise) so the handle is parallel to the grill rods. This “seats” the spiked end of the grid lifter between two rods, enabling you to safely lift out the grid. Lift slowly and adjust the grid lifter, if necessary, for balance.
WARMING RACK (if equipped)
The warming rack (Fig. 17-2) is packed separately.
To install the warming rack, lift the front of the rack up slightly and insert the rack hangers into the two holes in the back of the inner oven hood. Then lower the front of the rack into a level position to lock the rack in place.
To remove the warming rack, lift up on the front of the rack until the rack hangers pull free from their supporting holes.
Note: Removing the warming rack before using the
rotisserie will leave more clearance for the meat being cooked. (if applicable)

THE DRIP TRAY
The drip collection system allows you to brush or scrape excess dried residue from the grilling area directly into the drip tray (see PARTS LIST for drip tray location).
THE FLAVOR GRID(S)
Place each fl avor grid directly over a burner or burner pair. Center each grid over the burner, oriented as shown in Fig. 17-5.
Note: This allows heat from the burners to be evenly
distributed throughout the cooking area. The fl avor grids heat and cool quickly, making the grill very responsive to changes in heat from the burners.

CARE & CLEANING
APPLIANCE MUST BE COMPLETELY COOL WHEN CLEANING. DO NOT SPRAY ANY CLEANER OR LIQUIDS ON THE APPLIANCE WHEN HOT.
The appliance must be cleaned as often as once a month (depending on use) to prevent grease build-up and other food deposits.
INTERIOR
THE BURNER PORTS MUST BE KEPT CLEAN TO ENSURE PROPER IGNITION AND OPERATION.
Wipe with grain
Remove the burner (see orifi ce changing instructions) and clean the ports and slots as required. Also inspect and clean the burner inlet for insects and nests. A clogged burner can lead to a fi re in the bottom of the appliance.
The inside of the appliance may be cleaned periodically with oven cleaner if desired. Follow the oven cleaner instructions for proper use.
Be careful not to get oven cleaner on the outside surface of the appliance as it can permanently damage the fi nish.
EXTERIOR
Stainless steel surfaces when exposed to temperatures produced by the grilling process will change color. The stainless steel will change color from silver to brown and blue. This can be removed by using stainless steel cleaner.
Clean your appliance by fi rst using grill cleaner to remove grease and dirt. Always wipe with the grain (See Fig. 18-1). Next, use stainless steel cleaner to restore the stainless steel color (Note: not for mirror fi nish). Finish by wiping your appliance down using polish wipes. To
clean any mirror fi nish (if applicable), use a quality brand glass cleaner only, not any of the cleaners mentioned above.
If your appliance is installed in a seaside (salt air) or poolside (chlorine) location, it will be more susceptible to corrosion and must be maintained/cleaned more frequently. Do not store chemicals (such as chlorine or fertilizer) near your stainless steel appliance.

PROTECTING YOUR APPLIANCE FROM THE WEATHER
An optional cover will protect your appliance when not in use. (Allow to cool before covering.)
Please specify the model number and serial number of your appliance when ordering a cover.
IMPORTANT
IN THE EVENT OF A GREASE FIRE, IMMEDIATELY SHUT OFF THE MAIN GAS VALVE TO THE GRILL. KEEP THE LID OPEN AND ALLOW THE FIRE TO EXTINGUISH ITSELF. A THOROUGH INSPECTION BY A TRAINED SERVICE TECHNICIAN SHOULD BE CONDUCTED BEFORE FUTURE USE OF YOUR GRILL. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN WILL CHECK THE SYSTEM FOR GAS LEAKS AND WILL CHECK ALL ELECTRICAL WIRING FOR DAMAGE. ALL GAS LEAKS AND WIRING MUST BE REPAIRED PRIOR TO FUTURE USE.
Due to the nature of stainless steel, surface iron oxide deposits may appear. Do not be alarmed – these deposits are removable with stainless steel cleaner through prompt and periodic maintenance. If not attended to promptly, permanent pitting may occur.
By following these recommendations, you will enjoy the beauty and convenience of your appliance for many years to come.

If you have trouble with the unit, please use this list to identify the problem. By trying one or more of the solutions to the possible cause, you should be able to solve the problem. If this list does not cover your present problem, or if you have other technical diffi culties with the unit, please contact your local dealer.

Then read and follow the LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS exactly. Lighting instructions are located in the owner’s manual. If the problem persists, continue troubleshooting, or contact your local dealer or distributor for assistance.
REPLACING THE IGNITOR BATTERY
1. Remove the ignitor cover by turning it counterclockwise.
Important: Do not
attempt to pull or turn the rubber cap.
WRONG!!
2. Remove battery for
replacement. The battery is reinstalled with the negative (-) end out.
3. After properly inserting the battery, replace the ignitor cover by turning the cap clockwise.
Note: If you have accidentally removed the rubber cap,
follow the instructions below to replace it.
1. Pull the rubber cap and the inner plastic sleeve apart.
2. Carefully insert the rubber cap into the ignitor cover so it sits behind inner lip.
3. Turn the cap over and slide the inner plastic sleeve into the cap.

Robert H. Peterson Co. ("RHP") warrants your Fire Magic® grill to be free from defects in material and workmanship. Fire Magic
your Fire Magic® grill -- LIFETIME. (Except as noted below.) Fire Magic Choice stainless steel tubular burners are warranted for TWENTY (20) YEARS. Fire Magic
warranted for FIFTEEN (15) YEARS. Fire Magic Fire Magic
charcoal pan, charcoal grid, wood pellet screen, thermometer, and ash tray; which are warranted for ONE (1) YEAR. Fire Magic

This warranty applies to the original purchaser for products which are installed in the United States or Canada and which are operated and maintained as intended for single family residential usage. This warranty is valid only with proof of purchase, shall commence on the date of purchase, and shall terminate (both as to original and any replacement products) on the anniversary date of the original purchase of the product stated on the above schedules.
This warranty covers defects in material and workmanship. This warranty does not cover parts which become defective as a result of negligence, misuse, use not in compliance with the Owner’s Manual/Installation Instructions, accidental damage, improper handling, improper storage, improper installation, lack of required routine maintenance (as specifi ed in the Owner’s Manual/Installation Instructions), electrical damage, local gas impurities or failure to protect against combustibles. Product must be installed (and gas must be connected) as specifi ed in the Owner’s Manual/Installation Instructions by a qualifi ed professional installer. Modifi cations to products which are not specifi cally authorized will void this warranty. Accessories, parts, valves, remotes, etc. when used must be Peterson products or this warranty is void. Warrantied items will be repaired or replaced at Peterson’s sole discretion. This warranty does not apply to rust, corrosion, oxidation, or discoloration unless the affected part becomes inoperable.
This warranty does not cover labor or labor related charges, except as provided by separate specifi c written programs from the Peterson Co. All repair work must be performed by a qualifi ed professional service person and requires prior approval of Peterson.
Peterson may require the defective product or part to be returned to the factory to determine the cause of failure. Peterson will pay freight charges if the product or part is determined to be defective. This warranty does not cover breakage in shipment from our (Independent) distributor to its customer if the damage is determined to have occurred during that shipment.
This warranty specifi cally excludes liability for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages. Some states and provinces do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above exclusion may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specifi ed legal rights, and you may have other rights that vary from state to state or province.
