Application is a Recoiler using the SE-34 Sensor. A linear analog position feedback is used on
the mandrel. The m andrel to sensor bandwidth ratio is programmable. An O SC-20 is used to
provide oscillation of the web within the proportional band of the sensor. External control is
required via SBPC. W hen placed in automatic mode, the sensor output s ignal and the mandrel
position are recorded. The sensor continues to monitor the web edge and the mandrel then
follows the sensor output signal.
A CDP-01-H12 or CDP-01-M12 with FifeNet firmware is required for this application.
Software Part Numbers
The software part numbers are located on the side of the CDP-01 housing. They include the
Matrix Setup no. (MS), State Machine no. (SM) and firmware version ( Dx ).
CDP version: CDP-01-H12 D1:5650xx-02x MS: 100279.02x or CDP-01-M12 D2:5650xx-02x SM: 100280.02x

OVERVIEW OF FUNCTION
Operator Control Options
The CDP-01 signal amplifier can be operated by way of the CDP-01 control panel (internal
operation) for setup purposes only. For normal operation, control through the SBPC must be
used (external control). Control is to be supplied from a remote c ontrol panel or programmable
logic controller. The parallel port (X7) is disabled.
The symbols below are used for the various operator control options in the following:
Internal operation
External operation
Special Features of External Control
When the operation modes are being controlled via
external control, the Automatic, Servo-Center, Manual keys
of the CDP-01 control panel are disabled.
If the cable to the serial port ( -X8 ) of the CDP-01 is
disconnected, the CDP-01 will lock up.

digit (far right) will need to rem ain c onstant. (i.e. RGPC s hift r ight when in Auto with oscillation on
would be a hex value of ‘23’. RGPC shift left in Seek Overide with oscillation off would be a hex
value of ‘1A’.)
NOTE: If the Control Matrix is set to ‘00’, the CDP-01 will change to Manual mode.

Start-up / Sensor Bandwidth to Mandrel Ratio Calibration
The following procedure must be performed while in Manual mode with Control Matrix = Zero.
Locate the end of the SE-34 sensor bandwidth by
Press the Sensor key repeatedly until LED 10 is lit.
Verify the sensor is operational by moving a web edge
back and forth in the s ensor f ield of view that is near est
the junction box while watching the signal change in the
bar graph on the CDP-01.
moving the web edge away from the junction box until
the sensor begins to scan.
(NOTE: There are 3 configurations of the SE-34. See
left for the differ ent configurations and the approxim ate
location of the end of bandwidth).
The SE-34 sensor will "scan" looking for a web when
there is nothing present. After the sensor begins to
"scan", slowly move the web back and forth to narrow in
on the precise point of the s can. From this point, move
the edge of a web into the sensor (towards the junction
box) a distance equal to the total strok e length of the
mandrel.
With the web edge stable at this position, press and
hold the F2 and F3 keys until LED’s 5 and 6 are lit
(approximately 3 seconds). Onc e LED’s 5 and 6 are lit,
it is no longer necessary to hold the web edge stable.
Note: Approximately one minute is required for calculations
in this procedure. If it is desired to abort this procedure, press
and hold the Manual key until LED’s 5 and 6 turn of f.
The previous calibration is retained.
Half way through the calculations (approximately 30
seconds), LED 6 will turn off.
Note: If it is des i red t o abort this procedure, press and
hold the Manual key until LED 5 turns off.
The previous calibration is retained.
When the calculations are complete (approximately 30
additional seconds), LED 5 will turn off.
Position the web in the sensor for normal guiding.

Start-up / Mandrel Drive Polarity
The following procedure must be performed while in Manual mode with Control Matrix = Zero.
Press the Servo Center key. Verify that the mandrel
moves to the center of the stroke.
If the mandrel moves to either end, press the Manual
key and change the Servo Center polarity.

If the mandrel oscillates, press the Manual key and
change the Servo Center gain.

Place a web in the sensor, positioned for normal guiding.
Connect the parallel cable and select ‘Automatic’ via
external control.

Press the Jog keys momentarily. If the mandrel stops
moving when the Jog keys are released, sk ip the rest of
this portion of the procedure.
If the mandrel m oves to either end of the stroke, select
‘Manual’ via external control.
Press the Sensor k ey repeatedly until LEDs 11 & 12 are
lit.
Change the guide polarity.

TROUBLESHOOTING
An incorrect setting on the CDP-01 is often the cause for incorrect or unwanted guiding
characteristics. Faults and the procedures for r ectifying the faults are described in m ore detail in
the CDP-01 Reference Manual, chapter ‘F requent setting errors’. Application-specific f aults are
explained below.
Fault Diagnostics - Fault Rectification
Fault: The mandrel moves in the wrong direction in automatic mode.
Remedy: Select ‘Manual’ mode and change the polarity (guide direction) in the special sensor
mode (LEDs 11 & 12 lit).
Reference: CDP-01 Reference Manual, section: “Changing the Guide Direction”
Fault: The mandrel moves to either end of the stroke instead of to the center of its stroke in
servo-center mode.
Remedy: Select ‘Manual’ mode and change the servo-center polarity.
Reference: CDP-01 Reference Manual, section: “Servo Center Polarity”.
Fault: The mandrel does not accurately follow the sensor while in automatic mode.
Remedy: Perform the procedure “Start-up / Sensor Bandwidth to Mandrel Ratio Calibration” found
in this document.
