P r oduct Pro f i l e
We have designed this product to bind the four
m ost com m on
document sizes
used in today’s global workplace - the European A4 and A5, the Japanese A4, and the U.S. letter size. With it, you will also be able to bind matching document covers of all standard materials, as well as oversize U.S. letter-size covers.
The PB 2450 and the PB 2650E are, in fact, two machines in one: Not only a high-performance binding machine, but a heavy-duty
ring binder punch
as well.
With this generation, we have built in
m o re capacity
and
ex tra featur e s
than ever

For
optimum perf o rm a n c e
, it is important not to push your machine beyond its punching capacity. While it may be physically possible to fit in more sheets, we recommend not trying to save time in this way: It is likely to jam the machine, which over time will shorten its useful life. In addition, if your machine jams frequently when you are running it at capacity, it could be a result of unusually high humidity or otherwise heavier than normal sheets. Reducing input slightly should produce better results. For easy reference, you will also find the machine’s punching capacity printed on the inside of the waste drawer +.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
R EAD ALL INSTR UCTIONS BEFOR E USING
With both
m anual and electric
machines, always:
• Remove staples and other metal from sheets before punching
• Keep the transparent die cover closed during punching, and
• Keep the covers closed when the machine is not in use. Never attempt to open or otherwise repair either of these machines.
With the
m a n u a l
model, also make sure the punching bar .is lowered when not in use
in order to avoid bumping or catching your arm. With the
e l e c t r i c
model, treat it as you
would any other piece of electrical equipment:
• Keep it away from heat or water sources
• Plug it in near an easily accessible outlet
• Turn it off after each use, and
• Unplug it when not in use for an extended period.
S e t - u p
Before you can operate the
m a n u a l
machine, you need to assemble the punching bar .. Using the illustration on the inside of the manual cover as a reference !, attach the cushioned hand grip first to one arm of the machine and then to the other. (We have included a screwdriver and screws for this purpose.)
There is no assembly required for the
e l e c t r i c
model. Simply plug it in. If you would like to work “hands free” while binding documents, also plug the cable of the foot pedal /into the jack 0on the right side of the machine.
O p e r a t i o n
Before binding the first document, you should punch several sheets of scrap paper to remove any
f a c t o ry-applied gre a s e
that might remain on the cutting dies. To do this,
open the punch cover 'and follow the
s t a n d a rd punching pro c e d u re
for your model:
M a n u a l
– Raise the punching bar .to a vertical position. Place the long side of the sheet in the comb-punch entry "and press down on the bar .as far as it will go. To take full advantage of the machine’s ergonomic design, do this while standing in front of the machine and with both hands on the rotating grip. Raise the bar .back to a vertical position and remove the paper.
E l e c t r i c
– Press the power switch -and wait for the green standby light (to go on. Place the long side of the sheet in the comb-punch entry "and press the start button )or foot pedal /, removing paper after you hear the punching action.
Repeat this a few times until the edges of the holes are clean, then do the same with the ring binder punch #. The machine is now
ready for us e
.

C o m b - b i n d i n g
The first step in comb-binding is to prepare the machine to accommodate your particular document format and length:
1 .
Select com b size and m argin depth.
As shown, place the document, including covers, against the machine front and slide the cursor 2forward until it rests firmly against it. Looking through the viewer 1, you can now see both the comb size and margin depth that you should use. If the document lies between two comb sizes, choose the larger size. Similarly, if it also lies between two margin settings, take the higher number, thus deeper margin, in order to do more to reduce page tearing. To do this, move the margin indicator
3
to the indicated or desired setting. A guide to these sizes and
settings is also printed on the inside of the waste drawer +.
2 .
Open com b.
Position the comb behind the rake teeth &with the comb opening toward the top. Push the comb firmly down between the rake teeth
&
and pull the comb lever *toward you, releasing it when the comb teeth have uncurled enough to allow easy insertion of the document. (If pulling the lever *does not uncurl the comb, you need to turn it over. )
3 .
Set com b brake ,, if desir e d
. This can be a great time-saver when you are binding many documents of the same size. The comb brake ,allows you to open the remaining combs exactly as wide as the first simply by pulling the lever *until it stops. Once the first comb is in the desired position, slide the brake toward the back of the machine as far as it will go. (It’s a good habit to return the brake to its original position when finished so that the next user does not try to force the lever when opening a larger comb.)
4 .
Adjust for document size.
Turn the document wheel %until the edge guide $is lined up with the mark corresponding to your document type. If your document is not European A4, you will also have to release a cutting die in order to punch the right number of holes. To do this, lift the die cover 4on the top of the machine, pull up on the die marked with your format, and close the lid. We recommend you first test the results of your settings with a sample sheet. If the row of holes is not centered along the document edge, turn the document wheel %a little in one direction or the other and retest.
Now you are ready to start the actual
binding pro c e s s
. We have designed this machine to enable you to perform the key two work steps – punching and sheet insertion – alternately, instead of first punching the entire document, then inserting it into the comb, as many machines still require you to do. Although you can of course do it this way, inserting the document “
in installm ents
” eliminates the problem of realigning holes and can therefore save considerable time and trouble when binding a long document. This is how it works:
Punch fron t and back cover s
following the standard punching procedure (page 4) and
insert the front cover face down into the comb. (The front cover should be first so that the comb opening is hidden at the back.)
Punch sheets in batches
of no more than 25 (manual) or 30 pages (electric) using the
same procedure and insert them face down into the comb.
Page 8
6
Repeat punch ing and insert i n g
, as necessary, until all pages are in the comb. Then
insert the back cover.
Push the com b lev er*back to its original, horizontal position and lift out the bound
d o c u m e n t .
Pushing the machine beyond its punching capacity may cause it to jam. If this happens, the green standby light (will turn red on the electric model, and with the manual model, you will not be able to lower the arm to its horizontal position.
Do not tear out sheet s
in an effort to clear the jam. This will clog the cutting area and most likely necessitate a repair. Instead, follow the
jam-clearing pro c e d u re
for your model :
M a n u a l
– Raise the punching bar .and lower it with as much strength as you can,
repeating this as many times as necessary to cut through all of the sheets.
E l e c t r i c
– Press, but do not hold, the start button )and wait for the motor to stop. If this has cleared the jam, the standby light (will turn green again and you may continue, ideally with fewer sheets. If it does not, repeat this process until it does, always waiting for the motor to stop before pressing the button )the next time.
Ring Binder Punching
With the PB 2450 and the PB 2650E, you are also able to punch paper and covers for the
s t a n d a rd European (4 holes) or US (3 holes) ring binder
. Your machine has the same heavy-duty punching capacity in this function as it does in comb punching, although its total sheet capacity remains the same. If for some reasons you wish to use both functions simultaneously, the combined number of sheets in both entries should therefore not exceed the maximums listed in P roduct Pro f i l e and printed in the waste drawer +.
To use the
ring binder
punch:
Adjust for document size, if necessary
. Your machine is factory-set to punch holes in the A4 or letter size format, depending on your geographic region, but if your sheets are somewhat larger or smaller, you may need to improve the centering. Put the long side of a sample sheet into the ring binder-punch entry #and punch it according to the standard punching procedure (page 4). If the row of holes is not centered along the document edge, turn the document wheel %a little in one direction or the other and retest.
• Punch sheets in batches
of no more than 25 (manual) or 30 pages (electric) using the same procedure. As with comb punching, you may also punch 2 to 4 covers or similarly heavy sheets, depending on the material.
If you have a European machine, for much smaller documents, such as A5, you can also punch in a
2- hole
format:
• Fold a sample sheet in half (top to bottom), or draw a line through the middle
• Lay this “guide” on top of the batch you want to punch
• Place the stack into the entry #, lining it up with the center mark on the machine, and
• Punch according to standard punching procedures.

M a i n t e n a n c e
Strictly speaking, there is no maintenance required for your machine except occasionally wiping it off with a soft cloth dampened with plain water. You can, however, help extend its life if you always:
• Make sure the punching surfaces of documents and covers are clean and free of metal
• Empty the waste drawer +regularly to prevent debris from interfering with the dies, and
• Close the covers after each use to keep out dust and foreign objects.
Tro u b l e s h o o t i n g
If you experience a problem with your machine, you may be able to solve it quickly yourself:
Red standby light (or stuck punching bar .Your machine is jammed, most likely
due to punching too many sheets at one time. Follow the jam-clearing procedure described in O p e r a t i o n.
P a rtial last hole
Sheets are not properly aligned. With A4 documents, move document wheel %to improve centering; with all other formats, make sure the edge guide $is in the correct position and the corresponding die has been raised.
Punch holes not par allel to edge
Debris is stuck below the dies. Take a ruler or stiff cardboard and slide it into the entry ", moving it back and forth to release cuttings into the waste drawer +.
Dam aged hole edges
You may be trying to punch too many sheets at one time. Re d u c e
the number of sheets per batch.
If these measures do not solve your problem, please contact us through one of the many channels listed under Customer Serv i c e.
SAFETY REMINDER :
Do not attempt to repair
your machine.
