SAFETY MESSAGE TO INSTALLERS,
USERS AND MAINTENCE PERSONNEL
It is important to follow all instructions shipped with this product. This device is to be installed by a trained
electrician who is thoroughly familiar with and will follow all applicable national and local codes in the country of
use.
This device should be considered a part of the warning system and not the entire warning system.
The selection of the mounting location for the device, its controls and the routing of the wiring is to be accom-
plished under the direction of the facilities engineer and the safety engineer. In addition, listed below are some
other important safety instructions and precautions you should follow:
• Read and understand all instructions before installing or operating this equipment.
• Never alter the unit in any manner. Safety in hazardous locations may be endangered if additional openings or
other alterations are made in units specifically designed for use in these locations.
• Do not connect this light to the system when power is on.
• After installation, ensure that all set screws and threaded joints are properly tightened.
• Keep unit tightly closed when in operation.
• After installation, test the light system to ensure that it is operating properly.
• After testing is complete, provide a copy of this instruction sheet to all personnel.
• Establish a procedure to routinely check the light system for proper activation and operation.
Failure to follow all safety precautions and instructions may result in property damage, serious injury, or death to
you or others.
I. GENERAL.
The Models FB2PSTX and FB2PSTX-I Strobe Light are explosion-proof visual signaling devices UL Listed for
hazardous and marine locations. Underwriters Laboratories has investigated the Model FB2PSTX and
FB2PSTX-I to ensure they comply with TYPE 4X (watertight and corrosion resistant) and IP66 (dust-tight and
heavy seas) enclosure requirements.
The Model FB2PSTX is available for 12-24V dc, 120V ac, 50/60 Hz, and 230-240V ac, 50/60 Hz. The Model
FB2PSTX-I is available for 24VDC only.
II. UNPACKING.
FB2PSTX-I
Damaged globes can lead to explosions which could result in serious injury or death.
After unpacking the Model FB2PSTX or FB2PSTX-I, examine it for damage that may have occurred in transit.
If the equipment has been damaged, do not attempt to install or operate it, file a claim immediately with the
carrier stating the extent of the damage. Carefully check all envelopes, shipping labels and tags before removing
or discarding them. Disposal of all shipping materials must be carried out in accordance with national and local
codes and standards.
III. INSTALLATION.
The glass globe is part of the explosion-proof housing. If the globe requires added protection,
a separately purchased metal guard (Part No. DGFBX) can be readily attached.
Hazardous Location mounting position limitation of this light is the globe must be facing down when installed.
In all countries, the wiring must comply with all national and local codes and standards.
A. See figure 1. Install the fixture mount on the desired support surface using the four (4) 0.31 inch [8.0 mm]
mounting slots. Use customer supplied fasteners suitable for the surface to which the device will be mounted.
NOTE
B. Remove the terminal block from the fixture mount by loosening the two mounting screws.
To avoid electrical shock hazards, do not connect wires when power is applied.
C. Connect the supply wires to the terminal block as shown in figure 2 and 3.
1. Model FB2PSTX 12-24VDC, FB2PSTX-I 24 VDC.
The DC units are polarity sensitive, and MAY BE DAMAGED by incorrect electrical hookup.
When connecting the DC strobe unit to the voltage supply lines, POLARITY MUST BE OBSERVED.
In addition, damage will result if the voltage rating of the particular model is exceeded.
a. Remove the terminal block from the fixture mounting hood.
b. Connect the positive (+) power source wire to the terminal block screw marked “LINE.” Connect the
negative (-) power source wire to the terminal block screw marked “WHITE.”
c. If required by national or local codes and standards, connect the earth ground wire to the green screw in
the fixture mounting hood.
d. Replace the terminal block in the fixture mount and secure with the previously loosened mounting
screws. Ensure that all unused wire entries are sealed with the provided entry plugs.
NOTE
Ensure that the main housing gasket is clear of the threads.
e. To prevent galling and ease future maintenance, ensure the main housing threads of the fixture are clean
and lubricated with a petroleum or silicone-based lubricant. Thread the fixture housing clockwise into
the fixture mounting hood and secure with the locking set screw.
2. Models FB2PSTX 120 and 230-240 VAC.
Do not connect if supply wires are energized.
NOTE
The 120 and 230-240VAC Strobe units are designed to operate on both 50 and 60Hz electrical power.
Special modifications are NOT required for the different AC line frequencies.
a. Remove the terminal block from the fixture mounting hood.
b Connect the phase (hot) power source wire to the terminal block screw marked “LINE.” Connect the
common (neutral) power source wire to the terminal block screw marked “WHITE.”
c. If required by national or local codes and standards, connect the earth ground wire to the green screw in
the fixture mount.
d. Replace the terminal block in the fixture mount and secure with the previously loosened mounting
screws. Ensure that all unused wire entries are sealed with the provided entry plugs.
NOTE
Ensure that the main housing gasket is clear of the threads.
e. To prevent galling and ease future maintenance, ensure that the fixture main housing threads are clean
and lubricated with a petroleum or silicone-based lubricant. Thread the fixture housing clockwise into
the fixture mounting hood and secure with the locking set screw.

IV. MAINTENANCE.
To prevent ignition of hazardous atmospheres, disconnect the fixture from the supply circuit before opening.
High voltages are present inside the light assembly. Wait at least 5 minutes after disconnecting the power before
servicing this unit.
Listed below are some important safety instructions and precautions you should follow:

• Read and understand all instructions before operating this system.
• Any maintenance to the light system must be done with power turned off.
• Any maintenance to the light system must be performed by a trained electrician who is thoroughly familiar with
all applicable national and local codes in the country of use.
• Never alter the unit in any manner. Safety of the unit may be affected if additional openings or other alterations
are made internal components or housing.
• The nameplate, which may contain cautionary or other information of importance to maintenance personnel,
should NOT be obscured in any way. Ensure that the nameplate remains readable when the housing’s exterior is
painted.
• After performing any maintenance, test the light system to ensure that it is operating properly.
A. Flash Tube Replacement.
As strobe lights are used, the flash tubes begin to darken, causing the light output to decrease. This darkening
is characteristic of flash tubes. Darkening will begin near the base of the tube and progress upward. Also, as
flash tubes age, they may have a tendency to misfire (not fire periodically).
After extended operation, occasionally check for flash tube degradation. Should the flash tube misfire, have a
noticeable decrease in light output, glow continuously or darken to a point beyond that shown in figure 4—it
should be replaced.
High voltages are present inside the light assembly. Wait at least 5 minutes after disconnecting the power
before servicing this unit.
To change the strobe tube, proceed as follows:
1. Disconnect power.
2. Loosen set screw located on the globe assembly.
3. Remove the globe assembly from the main casting by rotating the globe counterclockwise. If the globe
assembly will not unscrew, back out the set screw a few additional turns.
To maintain the explosion-proof integrity of the enclosure, DO NOT damage the globe or threads while
disassembling or reassembling unit.
Lubricated joints exposed for long periods of time may attract small particles of dirt or other foreign materials.
Body and cover joints should be reassembled immediately.
4. Grasp the top of the dome and push down while turning the dome counter-clockwise approximately
3/4-inch.
5. Gently lift the dome away. Ensure the gasket between the dome and base is not lost.
6. Grasp the flash tube by its base and pull it out of the socket, using a gentle “rocking” motion. Insert the
new flash tube.

7. Before replacing dome, ensure that the gasket is properly seated on the housing base. Place the dome
over the base, aligning the recesses inside the dome lip with the four pins on the base. Push down on
the dome and turn clockwise until it locks in place (approximately 3/4-inch)
8. Reinstall the globe assembly to the main casting by rotating the globe clockwise.
9. Tighten the globe assembly set screw until snug.
10. Test the light for proper operation.
B. Cleaning Enclosure.
The circuit must be turned OFF and allowed to cool to the surrounding ambient temperature before cleaning.
Fixture should be cleaned periodically to maintain maximum light output. Only mild, non-abrasive cleaning
agents should be used. The glass globe should be regularly inspected for scratches and chips, and, if
damaged, must be replaced.
C. Lubrication.
The globe assembly and main housing threads should be well lubricated. If corrosive deposits have
accumulated on the threads and cannot readily be removed with solvents or are severely pitted, the parts
should be discarded and replaced. Re-assemble joint immediately after performing maintenance.
To maintain the integrity of the explosion-proof enclosure never use an abrasive material or file to remove corrosive
deposits from threaded surfaces. In extremely corrosive locations, equipment should be periodically inspected to
guard against unusual deterioration and possible pitting, since this may structurally weaken the enclosure.
D. Service.
Federal Signal will service your equipment and provide technical assistance with any problems that cannot be
handled locally by Federal Signal’s Distributor or Manufacturer Representative.
Any units returned to Federal Signal for service, inspection, or repair must be accompanied by a Return
Material Authorization number with a brief explanation of the service being requested and/or the nature of the
malfunction. This R.M.A. can be obtained from a local Federal Signal Distributor or Manufacturer’s
Representative.

V. UNDERWRITERS LABORATORIES WARNING EXPLANATION.
“Warning-Not to be used as a visual public mode alarm notification appliance”
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Underwriters Laboratories uses two different standards to investigate and List visual signal appliances. The first UL
Standard for Safety is UL1971 - Signaling Devices for the Hearing Impaired. This standard covers visual signaling
devices intended for fire alarm systems to alert the hearing impaired. The second UL Standard for Safety is UL1638
- Visual Signaling Appliances-Private Mode Emergency and General Utility Signaling. While this standard may also
cover visual signal appliances, it does not include the determination of adequacy relative to alerting hearing-impaired
individuals in a fire alarm system.
To prevent misapplication of a visual signal appliance Listed to UL1638, UL determined it is the manufacturer’s
responsibility to warn the installer in the field and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) of what would be an inappropriate use of the product. Therefore, manufactures whose products Listed to UL1638 are required by Underwriters
Laboratories to bear the warning, “Warning - Not to be used as a visual public mode alarm notification appliance”.
“Public Operating Mode” and “Notification Appliance” as defined in the National Fire Alarm Code, NFPA 72 is as
follows:
Public Operating Mode - Audible or visible signaling to occupants or inhabitants of the area protected by the fire
alarm system.
Notification Appliance - A fire alarm system component such as a bell, horn, speaker, light, or text display that
provides audible, tactile, or visible outputs, or any combination thereof.
In other words, this device should not be used as a component of a commercial fire alarm system.

Es muy importante seguir todas las instrucciones que acompañan este producto. Este dispositivo debe ser instalado

I. INFORMACIÓN GENERAL
Las luces estroboscópicas modelos FB2PSTX y FB2PSTX-I son dispositivos de señalización visual a prueba de
explosión certificados por UL para uso en ubicaciones peligrosas y marinas. Underwriters Laboratories ha examinado
los modelos FB2PSTX y FB2PSTX-I para asegurar que cumplan con los requisitos de cajas TIPO 4X (estancas y

II. DESEMBALAJE
Las esferas protectoras dañadas pueden ocasionar explosiones
que podrían causar lesiones graves o muertes.
Después de desembalar el modelo FB2PSTX o el FB2PSTX-I, revíselo en búsqueda de posibles daños ocurridos
durante el transporte. Si el equipo se ha dañado, no trate de instalarlo ni operarlo; presente inmediatamente un
reclamo con el transportista estableciendo el grado del daño. Verifique cuidadosamente los sobres, y las etiquetas y
los rótulos de embalaje antes de retirarlos o desecharlos. El desecho de todos los materiales de embalaje debe
realizarse de acuerdo con los códigos y normas locales y nacionales.
III. INSTALACIÓN
NOTA
La esfera de vidrio es parte de la caja a prueba de explosiones. Si la esfera necesita protección adicional, se
puede instalar fácilmente una cubierta protectora metálica (pieza No. DGFBX) que puede comprarse por
separado.

La limitación de la posición de montaje de esta lámpara en ubicaciones peligrosas es que la pantalla debe mirar
hacia abajo cuando esté instalada.
En todos los países, el cableado debe cumplir todos los códigos y normas de electricidad locales y nacionales.
A. Observe la Figura 1. Instale el montaje de soporte en la superficie de apoyo deseada usando las cuatro (4)

Las unidades de corriente continua son sensibles a la polaridad y PUEDEN DAÑARSE si se hacen conexiones
eléctricas incorrectas. Por tanto, se DEBE OBSERVAR LA POLARIDAD al conectar la unidad de luz
estroboscópica de corriente continua a las líneas de suministro de voltaje. Además, se producirán daños si se aplica

b. Conecte el cable positivo (+) de la fuente de suministro eléctrico al tornillo del bloque de terminales
marcado con la palabra “LINE” (LINEA). Conecte el cable negativo (-) de la fuente de suministro
eléctrico al tornillo del bloque de terminales marcado con la palabra “WHITE” (BLANCO).
c. Si los códigos y normas de electricidad locales y nacionales así lo exigen, conecte el cable de tierra al
tornillo de color verde de la campana del montaje de soporte.
d. Vuelva a colocar el bloque de terminales en el montaje de soporte y sujételo con los tornillos de
montaje que aflojó anteriormente. Asegúrese de que todas las entradas de cable sin usar queden selladas
con los tapones provistos.
NOTA
Asegúrese de que la empaquetadura de la caja principal
esté bien separada de las roscas.
e. Para evitar excoriaciones y facilitar las tareas de mantenimiento en el futuro, asegúrese de que las
roscas de la caja principal del soporte estén limpias y lubricadas con un lubricante hecho de petróleo o
silicona. Enrosque hacia la derecha la caja de soporte en la campana del montaje de soporte y sujétela
con el tornillo fijo de bloqueo.
2. Modelos FB2PSTX de 120 y 230-240VCA
No haga las conexiones si los cables de alimentación
están recibiendo energía eléctrica.
NOTA
Las unidades de luces estroboscópicas de 120 y 230-240 VCA están diseñadas para funcionar con energía eléctrica
de 50 ó 60Hz. NO SON NECESARIAS modificaciones especiales para las dos frecuencias diferentes (50 ó 60 Hz)
en la línea de corriente alterna.

IV. MANTENIMIENTO

A.Reemplazo del tubo de destellos luminosos
A medida que se usan las luces estroboscópicas, los tubos de destellos luminosos comienzan a
oscurecerse produciendo una disminución en la potencia de la luz. Este oscurecimiento es característico
de los tubos de destellos luminosos y comienza cerca de la base del tubo y continúa extendiéndose hacia
arriba. Asimismo, con el tiempo de uso, estos tubos tienden a fallar en el encendido (es decir, no
encienden de vez en cuando).
Después de un extenso período de funcionamiento, revise ocasionalmente los tubos de destellos
luminosos para detectar cualquier señal que indique la pérdida de calidad funcional. Usted debe

reemplazar este tubo si falla en el encendido, tiene una disminución notable en la potencia de la luz, se
ilumina continuamente o se oscurece más allá del punto que se muestra en la Figura 4.
Hay ALTO VOLTAJE dentro del conjunto de la luz. Después de cortar el suministro de energía eléctrica, espere al
menos 5 minutos antes de realizar cualquier tarea de mantenimiento o reparación en esta unidad.
Siga este procedimiento para reemplazar el tubo de destellos luminosos:
1. Corte el suministro de energía eléctrica.
2. Afloje el tornillo de sujeción situado en el conjunto de la esfera.
3. Retire el conjunto de la esfera del soporte de fundición haciéndolo girar hacia la izquierda. Si el
conjunto de la esfera no se desenrosca déle unas cuantas vueltas más al tornillo de sujeción para

6. Sostenga el tubo de destellos luminosos por su base y sáquelo del zócalo con un suave movimiento de
“balanceo”. Inserte el nuevo tubo de destellos luminosos.
7. Antes de volver a colocar la caperuza, asegúrese de que la empaquetadura esté bien alojada en la base
de la caja. Coloque la caperuza sobre la base, alineando las muescas dentro del reborde de la
caperuza con las cuatro espigas de la base. Presione hacia abajo la caperuza y hágala girar hacia
la derecha [aproximadamente 3/4 de pulg. (19mm)] hasta que quede trabada en su posición.
8. Vuelva a colocar el conjunto de la esfera en el soporte de fundición haciendo girar la esfera hacia la
derecha.
9. Apriete el tornillo de sujeción del conjunto de la esfera hasta que quede bien ajustado.
10. Compruebe el funcionamiento correcto de la luz.
B. Limpieza de la caja
Antes de limpiarlo, el circuito debe estar APAGADO y usted debe permitir que
el circuito se enfríe hasta llegar a la temperatura ambiente.
El accesorio se debe limpiar periódicamente para mantener la potencia de la luz al máximo. Se deben
usar agentes limpiadores suaves y sin abrasivos. La esfera de vidrio se debe inspeccionar regularmente
para detectar arañazos y desportilladuras y se debe reemplazar si presenta cualquier señal de deterioro.
