EXPLOSION HAZARD - Substitution of components may impair suitability for Class I, Division 2.
The Model 27XL LED Beacon is an explosion-proof visual signaling device listed for hazardous and marine locations. The Model 27XL is rated for 24 VDC, and 100 - 265 VAC, 50/60 Hz. The 27XL can be supplied with colors of red, amber, green and blue. The 27XL is factory set to operate at 60 flashes/minute. There is an option to operate the LED in steady on mode. Consult the factory for details.
These devices are intended for permanent installation and operation in accordance with Title 46, Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 110-113, or Title 33, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 183, Sub-part I, Section 183.410, and the applicable requirements of the American Boat and Yacht Council, Inc., and/or ANSI/NFPA 302, “Fire Protection Standard for Pleasure and Commercial Motor Craft.”
II. UNPACKING.
Damaged globes can lead to explosions that could result in serious injury or death.
After unpacking the Model 27XL, examine it for damage that may have occurred in transit. If the equipment has been damaged, do not attempt to install or operate the unit. File a claim immediately with the carrier, stating the extent of the damage. Carefully check all envelopes, shipping labels and tags before removing or discarding them. Disposal of all shipping materials must be carried out in accordance with national and local codes and standards.
III. INSTALLATION.
To prevent ignition of Hazardous Atmospheres, disconnect the fixture from the supply circuit before opening. Keep tightly closed when in operation.
Not to be used as a Visual Public Mode Alarm Notification Appliance.
NOTE
Mounting Position Limitation: “For Vertical Mounting, Globe Down, Only”.
This device is “factory sealed”. Failure to maintain the seal will compromise the environmental ratings for the product.
The fixture mount has provisions for mounting a 3/4” pipe.
-2-
The glass globe is part of the explosion-proof housing. In applications where the glass globe requires added protection, a separately purchased metal guard (Part No. DGXC) can be readily attached.
Wiring must comply with the National Electrical Code or Canadian Electrical Code and the local authority having jurisdiction.
For marine applications, all wiring (including supply wire) must be stranded wire and meet USCG (CFR46) Section (110-113).
The Model 27XL LED Beacon should be installed per the NEC or CEC, STATE and LOCAL CODES. Alternate installation locations and/or orientations should only be performed with the approval of the authority having jurisdiction. In addition, the unit can be mounted using an optional ceiling mount or optional wall mount.
To INSTALL on 3/4” N.P.T. threaded pipe, proceed as follows.
A. Ensure the mating threads are clean. Thread the fixture mount onto the 3/4” pipe and secure with set screw (see figure 1).
B. Remove the terminal block from the fixture mount by loosening the two (2) mounting screws (see figure 2).
To avoid electrical shock hazards, do not connect wires while power is applied.
Electrical Connection for all Models.
NOTE
See table 1 for electrical ratings. The 24 volt models are designed to operate on AC or DC supply voltages. The 120-240 volt AC models are designed to operate from 100 to 265 volts AC at 50/60 Hertz.
The 27XL is not polarity sensitive, but MAY BE DAMAGED by incorrect electrical hookup.
Damage will result if the voltage rating of the particular model is exceeded.
1. Connect the supply wires to the screw terminals on the terminal block marked ‘LINE’ and ‘WHITE’ (see figure 2).
2. If required by local building codes, connect the earth ground wire to the green screw in the fixture mount.
3. Replace the terminal block in the fixture mount and secure with the previously loosened mounting screws.
-3-
NOTE
Ensure that the gaskets and o-rings are clear of the threads.
C. To prevent galling and ease of future maintenance, ensure the threaded joint on the cover is clean and lubricated with corrosion-inhibiting grease such as petrolatum or soap thickened mineral oils. Thread the cover clockwise into the fixture mount and secure with the locking set screw.
IV. MAINTENANCE.
To prevent ignition of hazardous atmospheres, disconnect the fixture from the supply circuit before opening.
High voltages are present inside the light assembly. Wait at least 5 minutes after disconnecting the power before servicing this unit.
SAFETY MESSAGE TO MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL
Listed below are some important safety instructions and precautions you should follow:
• Read and understand all instructions before operating this system.
• Any maintenance to the light system must be done with power turned off.
• Any maintenance to the light system must be performed by a trained electrician who is thoroughly familiar with all applicable national and local codes in the country of use.
• Never alter the unit in any manner. Safety of the unit may be affected if additional openings or other alterations are made to the internal components or housing.
• The nameplate should NOT be obscured, as it contains cautionary and/or other information of importance to maintenance personnel. Ensure the nameplate remains readable if the housing’s exterior is painted.
• If the dome is damaged in any way, it MUST be replaced.
• After performing any maintenance, test the light system to ensure that it is operating properly.
Failure to follow all safety precautions and instructions may result in property damage, serious injury, or death to you or others.
-4-
To maintain the explosion-proof integrity of the enclosure, DO NOT damage the globe or threads while disassembling or reassembling unit.
Lubricated joints exposed for long periods of time may attract small particles of dirt or other foreign materials.
Body and cover joints should be reassembled as quickly as possible.
A. Cleaning Enclosure.
NOTE
Maintenance procedures sometimes require fixtures to be hosed down for good housekeeping. The circuit should be turned off prior to hosing down.
The fixture should be cleaned periodically to maintain maximum light output. Only mild, non-abrasive cleaning agents should be used. The glass globe should be regularly inspected for scratches and chips, and if damaged, MUST be replaced.
B. Lubrication.
Threaded joint on cover should be kept well lubricated with a corrosion inhibiting grease such a petrolatum or soap-thickened mineral oil. If corrosive materials have accumulated on the explosion-proof joints and cannot be removed with solvents, the parts should be discarded and replaced.
Never use an abrasive material or file to remove corrosive materials from threaded surfaces. In extremely corrosive locations, equipment should be periodically inspected to guard against unusual deterioration and possible porosity, since this may weaken the enclosure structurally.
C. Service.
Federal Signal will service your equipment and provide technical assistance with any problems that cannot be handled locally by Federal Signal’s Distributor or Manufacturer Representative.
Any units returned to Federal Signal for service, inspection, or repair must be accompanied by a Return Material Authorization number with a brief explanation of the service being requested and/or the nature of the malfunction. This R.M.A. can be obtained from a local Federal Signal Distributor or Manufacturer’s Representative.
