SAFETY MESSAGE TO INSTALLERS
NOTE
Installation, maintenance and disposal of this product must be carried out in accordance with national codes and standards.
It is important to follow all instructions shipped with this product. This device is to be installed by a trained electrician who is thoroughly familiar with and will follow all applicable national and local codes in the country of use.
This device should be considered a part of the warning system and not the entire warning system.
The selection of the mounting location for the device, its controls and the routing of the wiring is to be accomplished under the direction of the facilities engineer and the safety engineer. In addition, listed below are some other important safety instructions and precautions you should follow:
Read and understand all instructions before installing or operating this equipment.
Do not connect this light to the system when power is on.
After installation, ensure that all set screws are properly tightened.
After installation, test the light system to ensure that it is operating properly.
After testing is complete, provide a copy of this instruction sheet to all operating personnel.
Establish a procedure to routinely check the light installation for integrity and proper operation.
Failure to follow all safety precautions and instructions may result in property damage,
serious injury, or death to you or others.
I. GENERAL
Model 121 is only available for 12Vdc. Model 121A is available for 12Vdc and 24Vdc. Model 121S is available for 120Vac, 50/60 Hz.
II. UNPACKING.
After unpacking the unit, examine it for damage that may have occurred in transit. If the equipment has been damaged, do not attempt to install or operate it, file a claim immediately with the carrier stating the extent of the damage. Carefully check all envelopes, shipping labels and tags before removing or destroying them.

III. INSTALLATION.
A. Model 121.
1. Roof Mounting.
magnetic mounting base and is equipped with a plug that fits in a standard cigarette lighter
The Model 121 is designed for vehicular and portable use. It comes with a
socket. If the light is used outdoors, it MUST be mounted with the dome up.
Because vehicle roof construction and driving conditions vary, Federal does not
recommend driving a vehicle with a magnetically mounted warning light installed.
The light could fly off the vehicle causing injury or damage. Repair of damage
incurred because of ignoring this warning shall be the sole responsibility of the
user.
Holding power of magnetic mounting systems is dependent upon surface finish,
surface flatness, and thickness of the steel mounting surface. Therefore, to promote
proper magnetic mounting:
Mounting surface and magnets must be kept clean, dry, and free of foreign particles that prevent good surface contact.
Ensure that mounting surface is flat.
Magnet mounting system should not be used on vehicles with vinyl tops.
To prevent sliding of light assembly on mounting surface, quick acceleration and hard stops should be avoided.
If the light is to be held directly to the roof by the magnet, ensure that the power cable is not under the magnet.
2. Dashboard Mounting.
When installing equipment inside air bag equipped vehicles, the installer MUST ensure that the equipment is installed ONLY in areas recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
Failure to observe this warning will reduce the effectiveness of the air bag, damage the air bag, or potentially damage or dislodge the equipment, causing serious injury or death to you or others.
a. The vinyl cover is provided for use with the light when it is semi-
permanently mounted behind the windshield on the dash of the vehicle.
b. Use the dash mounting plate provided if the dash is made of non-ferrous
material. Tape or screw the plate to the dash.
c. If the dash is narrow or drops at a sharp angle, fabricate an angle
bracket and fasten it to the dashboard so that the light is level. Screw the mounting plate to the bracket. If steel is used to fabricate the mounting bracket, it is not necessary to secure the mounting plate to the bracket. Mount the light directly on the bracket.

or vertical surface or on a 1/2" NPT threaded pipe. Mounting on a vertical surface with the
Models 121A & 121S rotating lights are designed for mounting on a flat horizontal
lens positioned upward can be accomplished using a separately purchased Federal Signal wall (Model LWMB2) or corner (Model LCMB2) mounting bracket.
1. Pipe Mounting.
Models 121A & 121S can be mounted on 1/2 inch pipe. Mounting hardware
and installation details are left to the installer.
NOTE
To prevent the connection from loosening, tighten the fixture to a MINIMUM torque of 5 ft.-lbs. (6.8N m) after threading it onto the pipe.
2. Surface Mounting.
a. Using the gasket as a template, scribe the three mounting holes and the
center hole for surface mounting. Drill a 3/16" (4.8 mm) diameter hole at each of the three scribed mounting marks. Drill or punch a 1" (25.4 mm) diameter hole at the center for the wires.
b. Set the light on gasket and attach to the mounting surface using the
provided #8-32 screws.
c. Refer to paragraph E. for electrical connections.
IV. ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS.
A. Model 121 12VDC.
The Model 121 is equipped with a plug that fits in standard cigarette lighter
sockets.
NOTE
Center contact on the cigarette plug is the (+) positive power lead. Polarity MUST be observed for operation.
B. Model 121A 12 and 24VDC.
The Model 121A direct current unit is supplied with two leads (one red and one
black). Connect the red (+) lead to the positive power source terminal and the black (-) to the negative power source terminal.
NOTE
Polarity MUST be observed for operation.
C. Models 121S 120 VAC.
Do not connect if supply wires are energized.
The 121S alternating current units are supplied with three leads (one black, one
white, and one green/yellow) for the AC units. Connect the black lead to the phase side of the
-3-
power source, the white lead to the common (neutral) side of the power source, and the green/ yellow lead to earth ground.
NOTE
The 120 VAC units are designed to operate on both 50 and 60Hz electrical power. Special modifications are NOT required for the two different AC line frequencies.
V. MAINTENANCE.
SAFETY MESSAGE TO MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL
Listed below are some important safety instructions and precautions you should follow:
Read and understand all instructions before operating this system.
Any maintenance to the light system must be done with the power turned off.
Any maintenance to the light system must be performed by a trained electrician in accordance with all applicable national and local codes and standards in the country of use.
Never alter the unit in any manner.
The nameplate, which may contain cautionary or other information of importance to maintenance personnel, should NOT be obscured in any way. Ensure that the nameplate remains readable when the housing’s exterior is painted.
After servicing, test the light system to ensure it is operating properly.
Failure to follow all safety precautions and instructions may result in property damage,
serious injury, or death to you or others.
A. Lamp Replacement.
To replace the lamp, proceed as follows:
1. Disconnect power and allow the lamp to cool.
2. Remove the screw located at the bottom of the dome.
3. Grasp the top of the dome and push down while turning the dome counter-
clockwise approximately 3/4-inch.
4. Gently lift the dome away. Ensure the gasket between the dome and base is
not lost.
Always wear gloves and eye protection when replacing lamps.
5. Grasp the lamp, as close the base as possible, and gently push toward the
socket while turning counter-clockwise. Insert the new lamp, gently pushing toward the socket while turning clockwise. Make sure not to leave any residue on the lamp's glass.
6. Before replacing dome, ensure that the gasket is properly seated on the
housing base. Place the dome over the base, aligning the recesses inside the
