Fig.11 Checking IP address with ipconfig
If the operating PC has no valid IP address (like in Fig.11) you might have to assign a static IP address to the PC. If the operating PC is part of a LAN, ask your system administration to do this. Else you can configure the operating PC's IP address in Windows' Control Panel Network Connections Local Network Connection (LAN)
Properties Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, using the option "Use the
following IP address" and providing a valid IP address and subnet mask.
Fig.12 TCP/IP Properties
If the scanner selection dialog shows a net incompatibility you have to change the IP address of the scanner remotely. Select the command Set IP address form the scanner's context menu as shown in Fig.13.
Fig.13 Net incompatibility problems
Change the IP address of the scanner to an address that only differs from the operating PC's IP address by the last number. The subnet mask of PC and scanner should be identical. If you sometimes have the scanner connected to your LAN, ask your system administrator for a yet unused IP address.

4.3 Starting a scan
4.3.1 Step 8 – Unlocking the laser
• Insert the key into the lock and turn it to the On position.
• The Laser LED will flash green while exchanging parameters with the
PC unit.
• A red light on the upper part of the scanner and the green Laser LED will indicate that the laser is unlocked and ready for scanning.
If you are in a distance less than the eye safety distance, wear your laser safety glasses now and take care that there are no people in the potentially dangerous area unless they are wearing laser safety glasses.
Remember that the scanner is turning and the mirror unit is rotating with a high speed. Ensure that the scanner can move freely and that no objects can touch the mirror unit.
4.3.2 Step 9 – Scanning
You can start your first scan either by clicking on the symbol
(Start Scan) in FARO Record, or by pressing the Start button on the scanner. The software might ask for a name and a place for saving the scan. After this, the scan starts and a progress bar will be displayed.
In the very first scan after the scanner has been switched on, the scanner starts turning counterclockwise for a brief moment. Then it stops and starts scanning in clockwise motion. All consecutive scans are then taken without the initial counterclockwise motion. On completion of the scan the scanner rotates counterclockwise back into its initial position.
The result of the scan will be displayed on the screen.
4.3.3 Step 10 – Shutting down the scanner
Lock the laser by turning the key to the Off position. Use the On/Off button on the scanner (pressing it for at least 5 seconds) or the FARO Record Software to shut down the scanner.
The PC LED will be flashing green during the shutdown and the Laser and the Motor LED will be switched off.
After the shutdown is finished, the PC LED will be off and you can switch off the power supply of the scanner.

5 Shutdown of the FARO Laser Scanner LS
The FARO Laser Scanner LS has a PC with a hard drive integrated. This internal PC must be shut down before turning off the power supply. If the power supply is disconnected or switched off without the scanner being previously shut down, it may damage the internal PC and might lead to a loss of data.
To shut down the FARO Laser Scanner LS, select “Shutdown Scanner” in the Scanner menu of the FARO Record software. While the scanner is shutting down a dialog will appear showing the shut down status. DO NOT turn off the power of the scanner until this dialog has disappeared and the shut down cycle is complete.
Fig.15 FARO Record – shutdown message
Alternatively you can use the button on the scanner to shut down the scanner. Press the On/Off button on the scanner for at least 5 seconds. Wait until the shutdown cycle is complete and the green Motor and PC LEDs are switched off.
Once the scanner has been completely shut down, the external PC may be shut down and all power then turned off. When switching off the power, the scanner’s Power LED will change to red for a short moment and will then be switched off. Disconnect all cables and secure the equipment in protective cases.
Take care to unplug the bend connector from the scanner by pulling at the connector only! Do not pull at the combined data and power cable. Else the connector and the internal PC of the scanner can be damaged!

7 Color Option
With the color option, you can take scans in which each scan point has not only its 3D information, but also color value associated with it.
Fig.19 Scans with color
This is done by a combining the ordinary scanner with a digital camera. The digital camera is hooked onto the scanner and controlled by the scanner software.
When a color scan is taken, the scanner first performs a normal scan. Then it takes a turn to determine a balanced exposure setting. Finally in a third turn the digital pictures are taken.
7.1 Initial Setup of the camera
Before you can use the digital camera, you have to ready the camera. Have a look at the Nikon D200 quick start guide and perform the following steps:
• Charge the battery.
• Insert the battery.
• Choose a language and set the clock.
• Attach the lens.
• Insert the memory card.
• Format the memory card.
Be sure to do this at least 2 hours before you want to use the camera, as charging an exhausted battery takes some time.
7.2 Setup before scanning
The first time you want to use the camera for scanning, you have to change certain settings of the camera. It is recommended to check these settings each time before you use the camera again.
Please have a look at the Nikon D200 Quick Start Guide to see how to perform the following steps:
Page 30

• Set the shooting mode to S
• Select M mode
• Set image quality to RAW
• Set white balancing to K
• Rotate the focus-mode selector to M
Have a look at The Nikon Guide to Digital Photography with the D200 to perform the following:
• Set the USB option to PTP.
Page 31

The following steps have to be done each time before scanning:
• Select an appropriate white balance temperature. Auto white balance is not recommended, as your panoramic environment probably contains a lot of different light sources which would cause a different white balance on each picture. Make some test images to check the white balance setting.
• Turn the camera off and connect the USB cable to the camera.
Now prepare the scanner and hook up the camera:
• Put the camera mount on the mirror module of the scanner.
• Either use horizontal orientation of the camera or top orientation.
Page 32
User’s manual FARO Laser Scanner LS 32

• Adjust the focus manually to ∞ using the lens focusing ring.
• Connect the USB cable to the scanner.
• Turn the camera on.
7.3 Scanning with color
• Start FARO Record and connect to the scanner as usual.
• Open the camera tab of the scanner parameter dialog and adjust the camera
parameters according to chapter 6.3.1.9. Make sure that the correct camera mount and camera orientation is selected.
• If you are using the new non-parallax camera mount with the sliding mechanism, make sure that the camera is now in its parking position over the mirror module and the scanner is wound up.
Page 33

• The gear column may have some rotational degree of freedom. When tightening the fastener, please make sure that the gear column is at one of its end positions within this freedom.
• Start scanning by pressing The scanner will now first take an ordinary scan and will turn 180°. Then it will continue to turn to 360° and determine additional exposure settings. At the end of the full turn, it will calculate a balanced exposure setting.
• If you are using the new non-parallax camera mount with the sliding mechanism, you are now asked to move the camera into its operating position over the mirror itself, and to wind down the scanner. If you are using the new FARO carbon fibre tripod set as shown in the pictures wind down the scanner the whole distance of the gear column (20 centimeters). If you are using other tripods wind down the scanner for exactly 20 centimeters.
Page 34
User’s manual FARO Laser Scanner LS 34

Please make sure that the gear column is at the same end position in its rotational freedom as before.
• The scanner will now turn backwards and will stop several times to take a picture on each stop.
• The pictures are automatically transferred to the controlling computer and put into the scan file.
7.4 Applying the pictures to the scan
The scan points aren’t colorized automatically after the scan has been taken. This process has to be started manually.
The scanner based pictures are stored within the scan and can be seen in the structure view.
Fig.20 Scan with pictures
Select the command Apply Pictures in the context menu of the scan. This will first load the scan and all its pictures. Then it will remove any distortions from the pictures. Finally it will add the color information to the scan points. Please don’t forget to check the setting of Save modified scan points in the options and to save the scan afterwards, this is not done automatically.
If you want to treat every scan in your scan folder that way, you can select the command Apply Pictures in the context menu of the scan folder. In this case, the scans are saved automatically afterwards if you have the correct setting of Save modified scan points in the options.

8 Using FARO Record Mobile with a PDA
FARO Record mobile offers a web interface to control the scanner. In combination with WLAN and a PDA, this is a very comfortable way to operate the Laser Scanner LS. Please note that old scanners need a special software upgrade for FARO Record mobile.
As the scanner will now offer to different connection types (LAN and WLAN), a conflict may arise when both a laptop and a PDA are used at the time. In this case, the scanner is not operable with the PDA.
Please note: Although any web browser can be used on the PDA, some of them show problems with image manipulation like zooming. It is recommended to use Opera Mobile (
http://www.opera.com/) for smooth operation.
8.1 Setting up the WLAN connection
8.1.1 FARO LaserScanner LS
Attention: Use the blue data and power cable with the bend connector!
Plug the Fritz!WLAN USB stick into one of the USB ports of the scanner. Please note that you can only use the Fritz!WLAN USB stick to establish a WLAN connection to the scanner.
Fig.21 WLAN Stick in the USB port
The WLAN of the scanner is automatically configured to be in Adhoc mode with WEP encryption. The IP address and subnet mask of the WLAN connection are derived from the scanner’s ordinary LAN connection. In order to get the actual WLAN settings, you should use your laptop and the ordinary LAN connection. Start your favorite web browser on your laptop and connect to FARO Record mobile on the scanner by entering the LAN IP address. Make sure that no FARO Scene is currently connected to the scanner. You should now see the start page of FARO Record mobile.

If switching back from Full Size mode this zoom factor will still be applied to the whole web page. Please set it back manually to 75% as suggested before.
8.6 Auxiliary Files in the Scans Network Drive
There are auxiliary files in the scans network drive of the scanner for each scan. These files are needed for FARO Record mobile in order to display the scan images. They are not needed for processing the scans with FARO Scene!
If you want to delete scan files from the scans network drive with the help of the Windows Explorer, please make sure to delete these auxiliary files also. The files are named consistently with the scan file name, and have a suffix grey.jpg or color.jpg. On the other hand, if you delete the auxiliary files accidentally the scan will not show up in the scan listing of FARO Record mobile, even if the scan file itself still exists.
If you delete a scan file through the web interface like shown in previous section the auxiliary files will be deleted automatically.

9 Cleaning Instructions for optics
ATTENTION: To avoid unnecessary damage or wear, only clean optics when
the degree of contamination requires cleaning for proper function.
Major contamination and improper handling to clean optics may impact the scanning quality. Self-caused damages can result in a complete replacement of the part
at the expense of the customer.
• We recommend using latex gloves (acetone-proof). People suffering from latex allergies should use other acetone-proof gloves. Lightly rub the gloves after taking them off with laboratory cloths and acetone to remove grease and dirt.
• Never touch the optical surfaces with bare hands; if possible, do not touch with laboratory gloves either.
• Because of the hazardous materials, acetone and isopropanol, the optics should be cleaned in a cleaning box with air exhaust, flowbox, or mask.
• ATTENTION: Before cleaning the mirror optics, cover the lens with a cap
and avoid any contact with the lens.
• Even small amounts of acetone on the lens may result in dullness of the lens surface or cracks in the lens body.
• In the event acetone accidentally comes in contact with the lens, IMMEDIATELY rinse with isopropanol or water (distilled, if possible).
What’s needed:
• Compressed air spray (oil-free - optical supply store)
• Acetone, isopropanol in spray bottle / dropping bottle
Other types of alcohol (methanol, ethanol) may be used instead of isopropanol (pharmacy, laboratory supply store, chemical supply store)
• 1 Package lens tissue (optical supply store)
• 1 Package laboratory cloths (lint-free)
• 1 Pair of tweezers or forceps
• 1 Pair of non-powdered gloves (acetone-proof – latex)
Additionally for a greatly contaminated mirror:
• Mild neutral soap (optical supply store)
Page 47

9.1 Slightly contaminated mirror
Handling lens tissue: Fold one piece of lens tissue and clamp it in the tweezers or
forceps.
• First, use a little compressed air spray (oil-free) to clean the surface of the optics.
• Mist the clamped lens tissue with a mixture of acetone and isopropanol (do not soak). If necessary, wait a few seconds until some of the solution has evaporated.
• Carefully clean the edge of the mirror. Avoid touching the mirror surface with gloves.
• Mist another folded, clamped lens tissue with acetone / isopropanol. Starting at the edge of the mirror apply light pressure and wipe across the mirror into one direction. Repeat until the mirror surface is clean. Use a clean area of the lens tissue (fold used lens tissue accordingly) or new lens tissue for each wipe.
9.2 Greatly contaminated mirror
Folding laboratory cloths: Take several individual laboratory cloths out of the
package and fold twice. Set onto an oil-free surface.
• Fold the laboratory cloth and soak the edge in acetone. Carefully clean the edge of the mirror.
• Completely mist a fresh folded laboratory cloth with mild neutral soap along the edge.
• Starting at the edge of the mirror, apply light pressure and wipe across the mirror. Repeat multiple times in linear direction.
• Then clean with acetone / isopropanol as described under 9.1.

9.3 Cleaning the receiver lens
Clean receiving lens as described under 9.1, BUT USE ONLY ISOPROPANOL! NO
ACETONE!
• Even small amounts of acetone on the lens may result in dullness of the lens surface or cracks in the lens body.
• ATTENTION: To avoid unnecessary damage or wear, only clean optics when the degree of contamination requires cleaning for proper function.
• Major contamination and improper handling to clean optics may impact the scanning quality. Self-caused damages can result in a complete
replacement of the part at the expense of the customer.
