About this Guide

This guide contains installation, operation, control, and reference information for the XTP FT HD 4K Fiber Optic Transmitter and XTP FR HD 4K Fiber Optic Receiver.
In this guide, the terms “XTP FT HD 4K” and “transmitter” refer to the XTP FT HD 4K Fiber Optic Transmitter. The terms “XTP FR HD 4K” and “receiver” refer to the XTP FR HD 4K Fiber Optic Receiver.
XTP FT HD 4K Fiber Optic Transmitter and XTP FR HD 4K Fiber Optic Receiver Description
The XTP FT HD 4K and XTP FR HD 4K send and receive video, audio, bidirectional RS-232 and IR, and Ethernet signals over a fiber optic cable. They extend digital video signals (up to 4096x2160 @ 24 Hz) with deep color support up to 700 m (2,297 feet) using a multimode OM4 fiber cable or up to 10 km (6.2 mi) with a singlemode fiber cable.
Both models are in half rack, 1” tall, 6” deep enclosures for rack or table mounting.
Both devices can be controlled through Extron Simple Instruction Set (SIS) commands (see
SIS Configuration and Control on page 16) or the XTP Configuration Software (see XTP System Configuration Software on page 24).

output continuous invisible light, which may be harmful to the eyes; use with caution.

Do not look into the rear panel fiber optic cable connectors or into the fiber optic

Multimode — Long distance, up to 700 m (2,297 feet) depending on the fiber cable
Singlemode — Very long distance, up to 10 km (6.21 miles)

The multimode and singlemode models are physically and functionally identical with
the exception of the effective range of transmission.
Different modes are not compatible with each other.
A color-coded sticker identifies the type of SFP module: aqua for multimode and

HDMI Connection

Use an Extron LockIt Lacing Bracket to secure an HDMI cable to top mounting screw of an HDMI connector.

1. Plug the HDMI cable into the panel connection (see figure 7, 1).
2. Loosen the HDMI connection mounting screw from the panel (2) enough to allow the
LockIt Lacing Bracket to be placed over it. The screw does not have to be removed.
3. Place the LockIt Lacing Bracket on the screw and against the HDMI connector (3),
then tighten the screw to secure the bracket.
4. Loosely place the included tie wrap around the HDMI connector and the LockIt Lacing
Bracket (4).
5. While holding the connector securely against the lacing bracket, use pliers or similar
tools to tighten the tie wrap, then remove any excess length (5).
ATTENTION:
Connect and pull the tie wraps until they are secure. Do not overtighten.

The RS-232 and IR Over XTP connector is for pass-through transmission of serial signals, such as projector control signals, and infrared data. To pass bidirectional serial command signals between XTP-compatible devices, connect a control device to the three leftmost poles (Tx, Rx, and G) of the 5-pole captive screw connector. To transmit and receive IR signals, connect a control device to the three rightmost poles (G, Tx, and Rx). The ground (G) pole is shared.
NOTE: RS-232 and IR data can be transmitted or received simultaneously (see figure 8
for wiring considerations).

ATTENTION:
Power supply voltage polarity is critical. Incorrect voltage polarity can damage the
power supply and the unit. The ridges on the side of the cord identify the power cord negative lead.

HDMI Audio Switch

The XTP FT HD 4K and XTP FR HD 4K have an HDMI audio switch that mutes the embedded audio on the related HDMI connector. On the XTP FT HD 4K, the audio switch mutes or enables the audio on the HDMI loop-thru connector. On the XTP FR HD 4K, the audio switch mutes or enables the audio on the HDMI output connector. The LED next to the switch lights when HDMI audio is enabled.
Hold the rear panel HDMI audio switch up for about 1 second to enable embedded audio on the associated HDMI connector, or hold the HDMI audio switch down for about 1 second to disable embedded audio on the associated HDMI connector. The switch returns to the middle position after it has been released so the device can continue to be controlled through SIS commands.

EDID

NOTE: In matrix applications, EDID on the transmitter is assigned by the matrix switcher
using the XTP System Configuration Software.
The XTP FT HD 4K can record and save EDID in a user memory location on the transmitter. EDID can come from the loop-through display on the transmitter or the output display on the receiver. For EDID management, see XTP System Configuration Software (see EDID
Minder on page 28).

Audio Output Overview

By default, the XTP FT HD 4K prioritizes embedded digital audio over analog audio. Use SIS commands (see SIS Configuration and Control on page 16) or the XTP System Configuration Software (see XTP System Configuration Software on page 24) to manually select the audio input.

Host Device Connection

Use a computer running the HyperTerminal or Extron DataViewer utility, or a control system to make serial control of the transmitter and receiver possible. To connect directly to an XTP FT HD 4K or XTP FR HD 4K, connect the computer to the front panel USB configuration port.

SIS Programming Guide

Host-to-Device and Device-to-Host Communication

SIS commands consist of one or more characters per field. No special characters are required to begin or end a command sequence. When the XTP FT HD 4K or XTP FR HD 4K determines that a command is valid, it executes the command and sends a response to the host device. All responses from the transmitter or receiver to the host device end with a carriage return and a line feed (CR/LF = ]), Which signals the end of the response character string. A string is one or more characters.

Error Responses

When the XTP FT HD 4K or XTP FR HD 4K receives an SIS command and determines that it is valid, it performs the command and sends the corresponding response to the host device. If the command is determined invalid or contains invalid parameters, the transmitter or receiver returns an error response to the host. The error response codes are:

Software Installation

The XTP System Configuration Software is available for download on the Extron website,
www.extron.com.

1. On the Extron website, click the Download tab (see figure 13, 1).
2. On the left sidebar, click the XTP System Configuration Software link (2).
3. Click the Download Now button (3).
4. Submit any required information to start the download. Note where the file is saved.
5. Open the executable (.exe) file from the save location.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions. By default, the installation creates a directory in the
appropriate Program Files folder named “Extron Electronics\XTP System Configuration.”

Software Connection

The XTP FT HD 4K and XTP FR HD 4K can be controlled directly from the front panel configuration port (see figure 10, B on page 12 or figure 11, B on page 13) or remotely from an XTP matrix switcher (see the XTP matrix switcher user guide for connection details from an XTP matrix switcher).

Connection

When opening the XTP System Configuration Software, the Connections screen opens. Use this screen to establish communication with an XTP device through the front panel USB configuration port.

To connect to a device:
1. From the Connections screen in the XTP Configuration Software, select the device
radio button (see figure 14, 1).
2. From the displayed list, select the connected device to be controlled (2).
3. Click the Connect button (3). The Device Settings screen opens.

Transmitter Configuration

The Device Settings screen allows a user to view and edit various device settings of the transmitter connected to the host device.
Transmitter device settings
When connected directly to an XTP FT HD 4K, the Device Settings screen contains configuration options for the transmitter only. Click the Device Settings icon (see
figure 15, 1 on page 26) on the Global Navigation Bar to open the Device Settings
screen.

Video input — Select the HDCP Authorized check box to set the transmitter as

an HDCP authorized device or deselect it to indicate that the device is not an HDCP authorized device. By default, the check box is selected.
Video output — Select the Color Bars Test Pattern check box to transmit a test

pattern to an XTP receiver or deselect it to stop transmitting a test pattern to an XTP receiver. If selected, also select a signal type from the Signal Type drop-down menu.
Audio panel
Audio format — Select one of the following radio buttons to determine the audio input

format:
Auto Detect — Automatically detects the input audio format. When enabled, HDMI
audio has priority over analog audio.
HDMI — Transmits embedded audio from an HDMI signal.
Analog — Transmits an analog audio signal.
Analog audio — If applicable, move the handle of the Analog Audio Gain slider up

or down or specify the desired gain in the field below the slider to adjust the audio gain or attenuation in dB.
Audio output — Select the Enable Audio Only check box to enable a black signal

for audio-only transmission to the HDMI output connector on a connected receiver. By default, the check box is not selected.
If selected, also select the black signal resolution from the Signal Type drop-down menu. The default resolution is 720p @ 60 Hz.
Factory reset
Factory Reset — Click the Factory Reset button to reset the transmitter to factory

settings except for firmware (see mode 5 in Reset Modes on page 15).
NOTE: This is the same as the E ZXXX SIS command (see Reset mode on

EDID Minder
Use the EDID Minder screen to assign unique EDID to the input or match current output resolutions to the input. This feature is only available for XTP transmitters. Click the EDID
Minder
The EDID Minder screen displays a table of EDID options and connected output devices, which are each represented by output display icons. Factory default EDID options are displayed in blue and connected output devices are displayed in green. Custom loaded or saved EDID options are displayed in yellow. Output resolutions are displayed in green.

Assign EDID to the input
1. Select an available EDID setting (represented by a blue, green, or yellow output display
icon) from the Favorites, Connected Outputs, or Available EDID pane (2-4).
2. In the list of inputs on the right side of the screen, select the check box of the
connected input (5).
3. Click the Assign button (6) or the Assign to All button (7) below the input area.
TIP: Alternatively, EDID can be assigned by dragging and dropping the desired EDID
onto the input.
Add an EDID File to the EDID Library
1. In the Available EDID pane, click the Add EDID to Library button (8). The
Browse window opens.
2. Select the desired EDID file and click Open. The EDID file appears in the Available
EDID
pane (4).
3. Assign the EDID file from the Available EDID pane to import the EDID setting to the
device.

1. On the EDID Minder screen, right-click on the desired EDID setting in the Connected
Outputs

To use a filter or combination of filters, perform the following:

NOTE: To clear the currently applied filters, click the Clear button next to the filters (see
figure 17, 5). All filters are reset.

To upload and update firmware for the XTP FT HD 4K and XTP FR HD 4K, download the new firmware to a connected computer and upload the firmware with the Firmware Loader utility.

Valid firmware files must have the file extension .s19. A file with any other
extension is not a firmware upgrade for this device and could cause the device to stop functioning.

9. Click the Open button. The Browse dialog box closes.
10. Click Add. The Add Device... dialog box closes and the device and firmware are
listed in the Firmware Loader main window.
11. Click Begin to start the upload process.
12. Close Firmware Loader when the Remaining Time field shows 00.00.000, the
Progress column is 100%, and the Status field displays complete.

Extron Warranty

Extron Electronics warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship for a period of three years from the date of purchase. In the event of malfunction during the warranty period attributable directly to faulty workmanship and/or materials, Extron Electronics will, at its option, repair or replace said products or components, to whatever extent it shall deem necessary to restore said product to proper operating condition, provided that it is returned within the warranty period, with proof of purchase and description of malfunction to:

This Limited Warranty does not apply if the fault has been caused by misuse, improper handling care, electrical or mechanical abuse, abnormal operating conditions, or if modifications were made to the product that were not authorized by Extron.

Authorization) number. This will begin the repair process.

Units must be returned insured, with shipping charges prepaid. If not insured, you assume the risk of loss or damage during shipment. Returned units must include the serial number and a description of the problem, as well as the name of the person to contact in case there are any questions.

In no event will Extron Electronics be liable for direct, indirect, or consequential damages resulting from any defect in this product even if Extron Electronics has been advised of such damage.
