About this Guide
This guide describes the Extron MLM 52 Series faceplates and discusses how to attach
MLC 52 controllers to them. It also provides procedures for installing the MLM 52 in
a wall or furniture. In this guide, the terms “MLM” and “MLM 52” refer to both the
MLM 52 1GWP and the MLC 52 VC, and are used interchangeably.
About the MLM 52
The MLM 52 high-impact plastic faceplates are designed for use with the MLC 52 IR,
MLC 52 RS, MLC 52 IR VC, or MLC 52 RS VC MediaLink® Controllers (sold separately). The
following models are available:
• MLM 52 1GWP: A one-gang sized faceplate to be used with the MLC 52 IR or the
MLC 52 RS
• MLM 52 VC: A two-gang sized faceplate with an opening for a volume control
module to be used with the MLC 52 RS and IR VC models
The MLC 52 controllers are mounted to standoffs at the rear of the faceplates. See the
MLC 52 User Guide for controller programming and relabeling details.
Optional one-gang and two-gang mounting brackets (mud rings) are available for
purchase.

The faceplates can be installed in a wall or furniture using a standard one-gang electrical
wall box or mounting bracket (mud ring) for the MLM 52 1GWP, or a two-gang box or
mounting bracket for the MLM 52 VC. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listed wall boxes are
recommended.
Before attaching the MLC 52 controller to the MLM faceplate and the wall box or
mounting bracket, connect, program, and test the controller, following the instructions in
the MLC 52 Series Quick Start Guide, supplied with the controller.
If a wall box or mud ring is already installed, mount the programmed and tested MLC 52
controller with the MLM faceplate attached, and secure it in place with screws.
If a wall box is not installed, see “Preparing the Site and Installing the Wall Box.”
NOTE: To attach a mounting bracket to a wall or furniture, see the instructions
provided with the bracket.)
WARNINGS: Risk of electric shock or other physical injury.
• If using an electrical box, ensure that it is grounded properly.
• Installation and service of the MLC 52 controller must be performed
by authorized personnel only. These units must be installed in
accordance with the National Electrical Code and with local electrical
codes.
Preparing the Site and Installing the Wall Box
Choose a location that will allow cable runs without interference. Allow enough depth
for both the wall box and the cables. You may need to install the cables into the wall,
furniture, or conduits before installing the controller.
The installation must conform to national and local electrical codes and to the electrical
box or mud ring size requirements. Dimensional drawings and cut-out templates (not to
scale) are provided on pages 7 and 8.
For complete details, refer to the MLC 52 User Guide, available on the Extron website
(www.extron.com).
MLM 52 Wall Mounting Kits • Installation 4
1. If a wall box is not available for marking the mounting hole, create a full-scale
template with the dimensions shown in the “Templates and Dimensions” section
(beginning on page 7). Cut out the center portion of the template you created.
2. Place the template (or the wall box) against the installation surface, and mark the
opening on the wall or furniture.
3. Cut out the material from the marked area.
4. Check the size of the opening by inserting the wall box into it. The box should fit
easily. Enlarge or smooth the edges of the opening if needed.
5. Feed cables through the wall box punch-out holes and secure them with cable clamps
to provide strain relief.
6. Exposed cable shields (braids or foil) are potential sources of short circuits. Trim back
the shields or insulate them with heat shrink.
7. Insert the wall box into the opening and attach it to the wall, stud, or furniture with
nails or screws, leaving the front edge flush with the outer wall or furniture surface
(see figure 5).

• If attaching the wall box to wood, use four #8 or #10 screws or 10-penny nails. A
½ inch (1.3 cm) minimum of screw threads must penetrate the wood.
• If attaching the wall box to metal studs or furniture, use four #8 or #10
self-tapping sheet metal screws or machine bolts with matching nuts.
8. Cable and test the controller before fastening it into the wall box. The cables will be
inaccessible after installation.
Installing a Mounting Bracket
One-gang or two-gang Decora® style mounting brackets are provided with the
MLC 52 controller. If desired, you can mount the controller and the MLM 52 faceplate to
this type of bracket instead of to an electrical box as follows:
1. If desired, create a full-scale template with the dimensions shown in the “Templates
and Dimensions” section (beginning on page 7). Cut out the center portion of the
template you created.
2. Use the template you created in step 1 or the dimensions shown on pages 8 and 9 to
mark the opening on the mounting surface.
3. Cut out the material from the marked area.
4. Insert the bracket into the hole.

5. Turn the two screws on the bracket so that the locking arms rotate behind the
mounting surface until they clamp securely to it. Do not overtighten.

7. Place the MLC controller onto the mounting bracket, lining up the screw holes at the
top and bottom of the MLC with the holes at the top and bottom of the bracket.
8. Place the MLM faceplate onto the MLC 52 controller front panel, then attach both
to the bracket, using the provided screws in the holes at the top and bottom of the
faceplate.
