About this Guide

This guide describes the Extron DTP2211 long distance High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) Twisted Pair Extenders, which consists of a transmitter and receiver:
DTP2T211 — 330feet (100meters) transmitter
DTP2R211 — 330feet (100meters) receiver
This guide describes how to install, operate, and configure the transmitter and receiver.
About the DTP2211 Transmitter and Receiver
The Extron DTP2211 transmitter and receiver pair (see figure1 on the next page) extends the usable distance of HDMI digital video with resolutions up to 4K@60Hz (4:4:4), analog audio, remote power, and bidirectional RS-232 and infrared (IR) control signals over one Extron XTPDTP24 shielded twisted pair (STP) cable (recommended), or Category CAT 6a, or CAT 7 STP, or unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable up to 330feet (100meters).
The DTP2211 devices extend the digital signal to Legacy DTP inputs 330feet (100meters) with a maximum resolution of up to 4K @ 60Hz, 4:4:4, supporting data rates up to 10.2Gbps.
The DTP2211 devices extend the digital signal to DTP2 inputs 330feet (100meters) with a maximum resolution of up to 4K @ 60Hz, 4:4:4, supporting data rates up to 18Gbps.
Both units are HDMI(2.0b and 1.4) and HDCP(2.2 and 2.0) compliant. HDCP, EDID, and CEC transmission is negotiated from source to sink.
DTP2 transmitters feature configurable analog audio embedding that can be configured
via Simple Instructions Set (SIS) commands.
DTP2 receivers feature configurable digital audio de-embedding, which can be selected
using the audio toggle switch on the rear panel.
The DTP2211 transmitter and receiver are housed in 1 inch tall, quarter rack width, 6inches deep metal enclosures. They can be set on a tabletop, mounted in a rack, or under or through furniture. The receiver can also be mounted on a projector bracket.
Control Communications
The RS-232 and IR communications are passive pass-through only. The transmitter and receiver do not generate or respond to the RS-232 and IR communication signals. HDCP, EDID and CEC are negotiated from source to sink, with the transmitter and receiver transparent during the exchange.

TP Cable Advantages
4K/HDR Display
Twisted pair cable is much smaller, lighter, more flexible, and less expensive than coaxial or HDMI cable. These transmitter and receiver twisted pair (TP) products make cable runs simpler and less cumbersome. Termination of the cable with RJ-45 connectors is simple, quick, and economical.

Supports computer and video resolutions up to 4K/60 @ 4:4:4 — Support of
4K/60 at 4:4:4 chroma sampling requires connection to a matching DTP2 product.
Stereo audio de-embedding (DTP R 211) — The captive screw stereo output is
selectable for de embedded or pass-through analog audio.
Analog stereo audio embedding (DTP T 211) — Analog stereo audio signals can be
selectively embedded onto the digital video output signal and transported over DTP. The DTP2 T 211 can be set to pass the embedded digital audio, embed the analog audio, or to automatically embed the analog audio when no digital audio is detected.
Accepts additional analog stereo audio signals — The DTP2 R 211 accepts stereo
analog audio from a DTP enabled product. The DTP2 T 211 accepts stereo analog audio signals for simultaneous transmission over the same shielded twisted pair cable.
Supported HDMI 2.0b specification features include data rates up to 18 Gbps,
HDR, Deep Color up to 12 bit, 3D, HD lossless audio formats, and CEC pass­through
Support for HDR (High Dynamic Range) video — Enables greater contrast range
and wider color gamut by providing the necessary video bandwidth, color depth, and metadata interchange capability for HDR video.
Supports EDID and HDCP transmission — DDC channels are actively buffered,
allowing continuous communication between source and display.
Remote power capability — For simplified installation, the transmitter can be remotely
powered by a DTP2-enabled product over the twisted pair connection. It can also be configured to provide power to the connected DTP2 receiver product.
Supports Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) signal transmission — CEC
control passes through from the transmitter to the receiver.
Bidirectional RS 232 and IR pass-through for AV device control — Bidirectional
RS 232 control and IR signals can be transmitted alongside the video signal, allowing remote AV devices to be controlled without the need for additional cabling.
Supports multiple embedded audio formats — Compatible with a broad range of
multi-channel audio signals, providing reliable operation with HDMI sources.
Front panel USB configuration port — Provides convenient access for information
and firmware updates.
LED indicators for signal presence, power, and link status — Provide visual
indication of system status for real-time feedback and monitoring of key performance parameters.
RJ 45 signal and link LED indicators for DTP port — Provide a means for validating
signal flow and operation, allowing quick identification of connectivity issues
1-inch high, quarter rack width, metal enclosures — With low profile enclosures,
the transmitter and receiver can be discreetly installed in locations such as behind a plasma or LCD flat-panel display.
Includes LockIt HDMI cable lacing brackets — LockIt lacing brackets are used to
secure HDMI cables connected to the HDMI input and output connectors, preventing accidental disconnection of the cables.
Extron XTP DTP 24 shielded twisted pair cable is strongly recommended for
optimal performance.

Compatible with CATx shielded twisted pair cable — The DTP2R211 and
DTP2T211 fully support a maximum transmission distance of 330 feet (100 meters) for all compatible resolutions when used with CATx shielded twisted pair cable. Shielded twisted pair cabling with solid center conductor sizes of 24AWG or better is recommended for optimal performance.
External Extron Everlast power supply included (with the transmitter only) —
Provides worldwide power compatibility with high-demonstrated reliability and low power consumption.
Extron Everlast Power Supply is covered by a 7-year parts and labor warranty.

This section describes the installation and the operation of the DTP2211 transmitter and receiver, including:

Installation Overview

To install and set up the DTP2211 transmitter and receiver:
1. Turn off all equipment and disconnect it from the power source.
2. Mount the transmitter and receiver (optional) on a rack shelf or furniture (see
Mounting the Transmitter or Receiver on page31).
3. Connect an HDMI input source to the DTP2T211 input (see figure2, C on
page6).
4. Connect an HDMI output device to the DTP2R211 HDMI output (see figure3, D
page8).
NOTE: LockIt cable lacing brackets are provided to secure the HDMI cables to the
port to reduce stress on the HDMI connectors and prevent signal loss due to loose cable connections (see Securing the HDMI Connector on page10).
5. Connect the transmitter DTP2 Out RJ-45 port (see figure2, D) to the receiver
DTP2 In RJ-45 port (see figure3, C) using a Twisted Pair Cable.
6. Connect an unbalanced stereo audio source to the 3.5 mm mini stereo input on
the DTP2T211 (see figure2, B) for an analog audio input.
7. Connect a balanced or unbalanced stereo or mono audio device to the
DTP2R211 via the Audio captive screw output (see figure3, F).
8. Set the Audio configuration toggle switch (see figure3,E) on the DTP2R211
to the UP position to de-embed digital audio from the HDMI signal and output it to the captive screw output for analog audio output. Set the Audio configuration toggle switch to the DOWN position for the analog input from the TRS audio port on the Tx unit to be transported simultaneously with the digital embedded HDMI audio and output on the captive screw output (see figure3, F).
9. Connect a serial RS-232 signal, a modulated IR signal, or both into this 3.5mm,
5-pole captive screw Over DTP port for bidirectional RS-232 and IR communication (see figure2, E on the transmitter and figure3, B on the receiver).
10. Connect control devices. Connect your computer to the front panel Configuration
port (see figure8, B on the transmitter and receiver) to configure and control the transmitter and receiver via SIS commands.

12. In a DTP2 transmitter to DTP2 receiver configuration, set the SEND POWER
AA BB CC DD EE
toggle switch to the UP position on the powered DTP2 device to enable sending remote power to the far end DTP2 device. Set the toggle switch to the DOWN position on the DTP2 device receiving power (see figure8, D on page15).
ATTENTION:
The DTP2211 device is configured to output power to DTP2 models only. If
connected to a Legacy DTP device, set the toggle switch to the DOWN (OFF) position. Failure to turn the power OFF will damage the connected Legacy DTP device.

After the transmitter, the receiver, and their connected devices are powered up, the system is fully operational. If any problems are encountered, ensure all cables are routed and connected properly.
NOTE: Ensure the video source and display selected for the DDC are properly
connected to the transmitter and receiver pair, and the transmitter, receiver, and display have power applied before power is applied to the video source. If the other devices are not turned on before the video source, the image may not appear.

Audio output — This 5-pole, 3.5mm captive screw connector outputs the transmitted,

unamplified, line level analog audio. Connect a balanced or unbalanced stereo or mono audio device, such as an audio amplifier or powered speakers (see figure3).
See figure4 to properly wire a captive screw output connector. Use the supplied tie-wrap to strap the audio cable to the extended tail of the connector.

The length of the exposed wires in the stripping process is important. The

Securing the HDMI Connector
Follow these instructions to secure the input and output connectors to the transmitter and receiver with the LockIt HDMI lacing bracket provided:
Plug the HDMI cable into the rear panel connection.

Loosen the HDMI connection mounting screw from

the rear panel enough to allow the LockIt lacing bracket to be placed over it. The screw does not have to be removed.
Place the LockIt lacing bracket on the screw and

against the HDMI connector, then tighten the screw to secure the bracket.

Do not overtighten the HDMI connector
mounting screw. The shield it fastens to is very thin and can easily be stripped.

to 330feet (100meters) and reduce transmission errors.
Use the following Extron XTPDTP24SF/UTP cables and DTP 24 connectors for the
best performance:

If not using XTPDTP24 cable, at a minimum, Extron recommends 24AWG, solid
conductor, STP cable with a minimum bandwidth of 400MHz.
Terminate cables with shielded connectors to the TIA/EIAT568B standard.
Use no more than two pass-through points, which may include patch points, punch
down connectors, couplers, and power injectors. If these pass-through points are required, use CAT6 or 6a shielded couplers and punch down connectors.
NOTES: When using CAT 6a and CAT 7 cable in bundles or conduits, consider the
following:
Do not exceed 40% fill capacity in conduits.
Do not comb the cable for the first 65feet (20meters), where cables are straightened,
aligned, and secured in tight bundles.
Loosely place cables and limit the use of tie wraps or hook-and-loop fasteners.
Separate twisted pair cables from AC power cables.

2. Strip the jacket to expose 3/16inch (5mm) of the conductors.

Use a female 9-pin D connector to bare wire RS-232 cable or a universal control cable (UC50’ or UC100’) to connect your computer or control system to the Over DTP2 port.
1. Wire the unterminated end of the RS-232 cable to the first three pins on the connector,
starting at the left of the 5-pole captive screw plug as described below:
a. Connect the transmit wire from the RS-232 device into the Rx pin of the DTP2211. b. Connect the receive wire from the RS-232 device into the Tx pin of the DTP2211. c. Connect the ground wire from the RS-232 device into the G pin of the DTP2211.
2. Wire the unterminated end of the IR cable to the third, fourth, and fifth pins of the 5-pole
captive screw plug as shown in figure7.

once between this connector and the source or destination.

Use the mini Type B USB port on the front panel (see figure10) to connect the transmitter or receiver to a host computer to configure the unit with SIS commands.

If this is the first time the DTP2211 has been connected to the PC, the Found New
Hardware Wizard opens (see figure11).
The first screen offers to connect to Windows Update to search the web for the appropriate driver needed for the USB port to communicate with the DTP2211. This is not necessary if the USB driver is already on your PC.

Windows Update to search the web at this time (for example, if the driver is already on your computer).

NOTE: You do not need to insert an installation disc.
The PC locates the driver needed and installs it in the correct location on the hard drive.

NOTE: The wizard opens only on the first occasion you connect the transmitter
or receiver to that USB port. The wizard reappears if you connect the unit to a different USB port or if you connect a different piece of equipment, requiring a different driver, to the same USB port.

Analog Audio Embedding (Transmitter)
Analog audio on the 3.5 mm input on the transmitter functions in two modes, which can be configured via SIS commands (see Audio Input Configuration (Tx only) on page22):
Analog audio over DTP — Standard analog audio over DTP is digitized and
transported simultaneously with the embedded digital audio on the HDMI signal.
Embedding the analog audio input — The analog input signal is converted to 16-bit

HDMI Audio De‑embedding (Receiver)
Using the rear panel toggle switch (see figure3, E on page8), the DTP2 211 receiver can be configured to:

DOWN (default) — HDMI digital audio pass-through and analog audio over DTP2.
NOTE: Whether the audio configuration switch is UP or DOWN, the embedded digital

Introduction to SIS

The DTP2211transmitter and receiver accept SIS commands from a host device such as a computer running the Extron DataViewer utility or other control system. The host device can be connected to the Config port on the front panel (see Connecting to the Front Panel
USB Port on page17).
SIS commands consist of strings (one or more characters per command field). Upper and lower case characters can be used interchangeably. Commands do not require any special characters to begin or end the command string. Each response from the DTP2211 transmitter and receiver ends with a carriage return and a line feed (CR/LF=]), which signals the end of the response character string.
When the transmitter or receiver is first switched on, it sends the message:

Error Messages

E10 — Invalid command E13 — Invalid parameter
Timeout
Pauses of 10seconds or longer between command ASCII characters result in a timeout. The command operation is aborted with no other indication.
Vx.xx is the firmware version number.
60‑xxxx‑xx is the part number of the device.

Downloading and Updating Firmware

Firmware for the DTP2211 products can be upgraded using Extron Firmware Loader and a PC. Both Extron Firmware Loader and upgraded firmware for the DTP2211 can be downloaded at www.extron.com.
NOTE: Upgrading the firmware does not overwrite the current configuration.
Downloading Extron Firmware Loader
1. On the Extron website, mouse over the Download tab (see figure14, 1).

2. Click on Software link in the drop-down menu(2). The Software page opens.

3. On the bottom of the page, click on the Flink (see figure15, 1).

5. Click Release Notes (see figure16,1) to see the issues that have been addressed by
the latest update.
6. Click the Download link on the right (2). Note where the file is saved.
Installing Firmware Loader
1. Once Firmware Loader has been downloaded, run the .exe file from the save
location. The Installation Wizard window opens.
2. Follow the instructions on the Installation Wizard screens to install Firmware
Loader on the computer. The installation creates the necessary subfolders of C:\ Program Files and the necessary groups. It places the appropriate files into the
correct group folders:
Folder — C:\Program Files\Extron\FWLoader
Downloading Firmware to a PC
1. Power on a computer connected to the same network as the transmitter or receiver.
2. On the Extron website, mouse over the Download tab in the menu bar along the top of
the page (see figure17,1).

3. Click Firmware in the drop-down menu (2).
The Firmware page opens (see figure18 on the next page).

4. Click the letter D from the alphabetic navigation bar (see figure18, 1).
5. Scroll down the page until you find the firmware for the transmitter or the receiver.
6. Click Release Notes for more information about the program (optional).
7. Click the Download link on the right.
8. Follow the on-screen instructions to download the firmware. Make a note of where the
firmware file is stored on the PC.

incorrect extension may cause the device to stop functioning.

Updating Firmware on a DTP2211 Device
1. Download the latest version of the firmware to your PC.
2. Connect the PC to the DTP2211 device via the front panel USB port (see Connecting
to the Front Panel USB Port on page17) of the transmitter or receiver.
3. Open the Firmware Loader via the Firmware Loader icon installed during the
download (optional) or your desktop Start menu by making the following selections:
Start > All Programs > Extron Electronics > Firmware Loader > Firmware Loader
The Firmware Loader window opens. The Add Device... window opens in front (see figure19).

4. In the Add Device window, select the DTP2211 from the Device Names drop-down
menu.

5. From the Connection Method drop-down menu, select USB.
6. Additional options appear. Make the appropriate selections for the USB connection.
Only the Extron USB Device_0 option is available on the Available Devices
menu. Make sure that it is selected.
7. Click Connect (see figure20, 1). If the connection is successful, the unit name is
displayed in green in the Connected Device section, followed by a check mark (2).

8. Click the Browse button (3) in the New Firmware File (Optional) section.
9. In the Open window, locate and double-click the new firmware file, which has an .s19

10. If this is the only device uploading firmware, click Add (2). The device name is
added to the Device section of the Firmware Loader window and the Add Device window closes.
If firmware is uploading to multiple devices, do the following:
a. Click Add Next (3). The first device is added to the Device section of the
Firmware Loader window, and the Add Device... window remains open.
b. For each additional device that needs to be added to the Firmware Loader
window, repeat steps 4 through 9, then click Add Next(3).
c. For the last device, click Add (2), instead of Add Next (3), to add the device and
close the Add Device... window.

The 1-inch high, quarter rack width, 6-inches deep transmitter and receiver can be placed on a table, mounted in a rack, or mounted under a desk or table. The receiver can also be mounted on a projector bracket.

Tabletop Use

Affix the included rubber feet to the bottom of the unit and place it in any convenient location.
Mounting kits
Mount the unit using the optional compatible mounting kit listed on the Extron website, in accordance with the directions included with the kit. The devices are compatible with the Extron Half Rack shelf system HRB109, Extron UTS under the table shelf system, Extron rack shelves RSU126, and MBU125 under the table shelf brackets.

If the ground jumper is Open, a DTP2 211 unit cannot remotely power the other
unit, because of ground potential differences. Each unit requires a local power supply.
If the 48 VDC remote power jumper is Off, DTP2 211 unit cannot remotely power
the other unit. Each unit requires a local power supply.
Follow these instructions to gain access to the jumpers:
1. Disconnect any cables and remove the transmitter and receiver from the rack or other
installation option.
2. Remove and retain the screws securing the covers to the transmitter and receiver. Slide
the covers forward slightly and lift them off both units (see figure27).

3. Locate (see figure28), lift jumper off pins 1 and 2, and place on pins 2 and 3 (see

4. Reinstall the covers on both units, securing them in place with the screws removed in
step2.
5. Reinstall both units in their racks or other installation option (see Mounting the
Transmitter or Receiver on page31).
6. If shielded cable is used, disconnect the cable shield from the connector at either
end of the cable.
7. Obtain a second 18watt power supply (one power supply is provided with the
transmitter and normally powers both units), and locally power both units (see Power
Supply Wiring on page12).
