About the 1U Rack Shelves
The Basic 1U Rack Shelf ships with the following:
• 1 black anodized 1U rack shelf
• 16 4-40 x 3/16" screws for mounting most devices onto the shelf
• 4 6-32 x 1/8" screws for mounting INxxxx devices onto the shelf
• 4 10-32 x 3/4" black screws with captive washers for mounting the
shelf in a rack
The Universal 1U Rack Shelf (figure 1) ships with all of the basic rack
shelf’s equipment plus the following:
• 1 textured, charcoal gray, 1U rack shelf
• 16 4-40 x 3/16" screws for mounting most devices onto the shelf
• 4 6-32 x 1/8" screws for mounting INxxxx and TPR101 devices onto
the shelf
• 4 10-32 x 3/4" black screws with captive washers for mounting the
shelf in a rack
• 1 charcoal gray half rack width false front panel
• 1 charcoal gray quarter rack width false front panel (not shown)
• 1 charcoal gray eighth rack width false front panel (not shown)

Before installing the 1U Rack Shelf, consider the available space in the
rack, and the device(s) that will be mounted on this shelf.
A 1U shelf rack can accommodate the following (figure 2):
• 2 half rack width devices
• 3 one-third rack width devices
• 4 standard quarter rack width devices
• 7 VersaTools® quarter rack width devices (leave one rear mounting
location empty for cable routing)
• 15 VersaTools eighth rack width devices (leave one rear mounting
location empty for cable routing)
• A mix of devices in different widths and depths

Installing the Device(s)
All the rack-mountable devices have two threaded holes in their base
plate for mounting onto the shelf.
It is easier to first install the device(s) onto the 1U shelf and then
install the shelf in the rack.
The standard half rack width products and INxxxx and TPR101
half rack width products mount in one of two locations in the
front of the rack.
The one-third rack width products mount in one of three locations
in the front of the rack.

Installation
The standard quarter rack width products mount in one of four
locations in the front of the rack.
The quarter rack VersaTools products mount in one of eight
locations in the front or rear of the rack.
The eighth rack VersaTools products mount in one of eight
locations to the rear of the rack or in one of eight locations to the
front of the rack.
1. If the device being installed has rubber feet, remove them.
2. Place the device on the shelf so that its two threaded holes line up
with two holes in the 1U shelf. Use two 4-40 x 3/16" screws or two
6-32 x 1/8" screws to secure the device onto the shelf (figure 3).
• Use 6-32 x 1/8" screws for all INxxxx and TPR101 one-third
rack width products.
• Use 4-40 x 3/16" screws for all other products.
Installing INxxxx half rack products on this shelf leaves a small
(1/8" [0.3 cm]) gap on either side of the installed product. This is
normal.
A combination of faceplates can fill gaps that are caused by
mixing half rack width, quarter rack width, and eighth rack width
products. There is no combination of faceplates that can fill the
gaps created when you are installing one-third rack width
products.
One of each faceplate, in the charcoal gray finish, is included with
the universal rack shelf. All faceplates, in either finish, are
available as accessories. See Part Numbers, on the rear of this
User’s Guide.
Installing the Shelf in a Rack
1. Use the four 10-32 x 3/4" black screws with captive washers to
mount the 1U shelf in the rack (figure 4).

3. If additional devices are being installed, follow steps 1 and 2 to
mount the devices on other portions of the shelf.
4. If there is a large gap in the front of the panel, install the half rack
width, quarter rack width, and/or eighth rack width false
faceplate(s) onto the unused area of the shelf using two
4-40 x 3/16" screws.

2. When the shelf is mounted, continue the installation by connecting
the input, output, and power cables.
