This guide provides installation instructions for the Extron Extender AKM MAAP
(shown below), designed for installation into
the Ackermann
or GB3 insert.

personnel only.
Preparing the Installation Site
Take the following steps to prepare the installation site:
1. Determine and obtain the electronics, MAAPs (Mini Architectural Adaptor
Plates), and cables required for this installation.
2. Turn off all equipment. Make sure the computer, Extender, and output
devices (projector, monitor, etc.) are all turned off and disconnected from the
power source.
3. Select an installation site that allows cable runs without interference. Allow
enough depth for both the floor box and the cables.
4. Install the floor box in accordance with the instructions Ackermann provided
with the floor box.
5. Route all cables required for the installation through the floor box and
terminate the cables with connectors if needed.
CAUTION
Exposed cable shields (braids or foil) are potential sources of short circuits.
To prevent short circuits, shields should be trimmed back or insulated with
heat shrink. Both braided and foil shields should be connected to an
equipment ground at the other end of the cable.
Identifying the Parts
The Extender AKM MAAP assembly, shown
at right, consists of the four metal pieces
(main enclosure, upper mounting plate,
lower mounting plate, and nut bar), blank
MAAP plates, an Extender line driver, and
the screws that hold it all together.

Installation and Cabling
The Extender must be cabled, optional MAAPs must be installed and cabled, and
both the Extender and MAAPs must be tested before attaching mounting plates to
the enclosure and mounting the assembly into the floor box.
1. Unpack the Extender AKM MAAP and any optional MAAPs. Save all the
screws—you will need them later.
• Each faceplate assembly comes with four #6-32 x 1/4" to 3/8" long
Phillips pan head screws.
• Each MAAP faceplate or module requires at least two socket-head cap
screws (#4-40 x 1/4") for securing the MAAP to a faceplate. Six of these
screws are included with the Extender AKM MAAP along with a small

2. Route the cables up out of the Ackermann floor box and through the opening
in the upper mounting plate.
3. Connect audio output and power cables to the Extender’s direct insertion
captive screw connectors. See the illustrations below, and refer to the
Extender Series User’s Manual (part #68-552-01, available at www.extron.com) .
Allen (hex socket) wrench. The hex nuts for these
machine screws are built into the Extender AKM
MAAP’s faceplate.

For audio, connect the sleeve to ground (Gnd). Connecting the sleeve to a
Power input wiring

9-24VDC
negative (-) terminal will damage the audio output circuits.
CAUTION
Use a 9 VDC to 18 VDC power supply only. Polarity is not important.
For best results and to reduce the risk of short circuits, trim just 0.2"
(5 mm) of the jacket from the wires. Do not tin the wires.
4. Loosely attach the upper mounting plate to the lower mounting plate and the
nut bar using the two provided Phillips pan head screws as shown below.

5. Set the Extender’s gain switch, which will be inaccessible after installation.
The gain switch is located at the rear of the Extender, between the two circuit
boards. Slide this switch to select the level of
video gain that yields the sharpest picture. Refer

7. Connect video, audio, and power cables to each device (MAAPs, input/

8. Attach the MAAPs to the faceplate.

faceplate. See the figure at right.
c. Repeat steps 8a and 8b until all MAAPs have
been installed.
9. Power up the output devices, the Extender, and the input devices, and test the
system. All devices should have power, and the audio and video should be
working properly. If not, check all cabling and switch settings, and make
adjustments as necessary. See “Pre-installation testing/troubleshooting” in
the Extender Series User’s Manual for details.
10. When testing and adjustments are completed, remove power from all input
devices, output devices, and the Extender; and disconnect input cables from
the Extender and MAAPs.
11. Lower the main enclosure onto the upper mounting plate and slide it
backwards so the tab on the upper mounting plate is inserted into the slot in
the lower rear of the enclosure. See the diagram below.
CAUTION
Take care not to damage the cables during this procedure, and make sure
no cables are caught between the enclosure and the mounting plate.

12. Align the two holes in the enclosure’s front flange with the corresponding
holes in the upper mounting plate, and fasten the enclosure securely to the
plate using the two remaining Phillips pan head screws.

Mounting the Extender AKM MAAP Assembly into
the Floor Box
Follow this procedure to mount the Extender AKM MAAP assembly into the
Ackermann floor box.
1. Slide the lower mounting plate towards the Extender AKM MAAP main
enclosure to make the assembly as compact as possible.
2. Orient the Extender AKM MAAP assembly for proper insertion into the floor
box. The front of the Extender and the MAAPs’ connectors must be accessible
from the front of the floor box.
3. Lower the Extender AKM MAAP assembly and cables into the floor box.
4. Insert the upper mounting plate’s tab (at the rear of the assembly) into the slot
in the wall of the floor box.
5. Pull the lower mounting plate forward, expanding the assembly until the
front tab is inserted into the corresponding slot in the floor box.
6. Tighten the Phillips pan head screws to secure the mounting plates and nut
bar. See the pictures below for examples of the completed installation.
7. Restore power to all devices.
