Sentriant Installation Guide
1 Introduction
The Sentriant Installation Guide describes the procedures for installing, cabling, and initially configuring the 2-rack unit (RU) Sentriant.
This chapter describes the guide’s intended audience, the organization of the guide, and the notational and typographical conventions used. The physical dimensions, performance characteristics, regulatory compliance certifications, and safety information are also included in this chapter.
The Sentriant is configured with dual processors and provides four Gigabit Ethernet ports and one Gigabit Ethernet management port.
Target Audience
The Sentriant Installation Guide is intended for:
Trained, qualified network installation and support technicians
System and network administrators
At minimum, technicians should be familiar with Ethernet technology and terminology as it applies to local area network (LAN) access and have a understanding of safety practices when working with electrical equipment.
Organization of this Guide
This guide is organized into the following sections:
Introduction
Chapter 2: Preparation and Unpacking
Chapter 3: Installation
Chapter 4: Start-Up and Initial Configuration

WARNING!
Plug the system into properly grounded electrical outlets to help prevent electrical shock. The socket
outlet must be installed near the equipment and be easily accessible for quick disconnect.
The power button on the system does not turn off system AC power. To remove AC power from the
system, you must unplug the AC power cord from the wall outlet or power supply. The power cord is the disconnect device to the main (AC) power.
Make sure the voltage and frequency of your power outlet match the equipment's system's electrical
ratings. The building and/or power source must provide overload protection.
Use only power cords that are certified for use within the country of use. Do not attempt to modify
AC power cord. Replace power cords immediately if it shows any signs of damage.
Use a surge suppressor, line conditioner, or uninterruptible power supply to protect the system from
momentary increases or decreases in electrical power.
Ensure at least 3 inches clearance on all sides for effective ventilation. Do not obstruct the air intake
vent on the front, or the side or rear ventilation grills Locate the system away from heat sources.
Ensure that all cables are installed in a manor to avoid strain. Use tie wraps or other strain relief
devices.
Use only original accessories, antennas and, or components approved for use with this system.
Failure to observe these instructions may damage the equipment or even violate required safety and EMC regulations.
Replacing lithium battery: Battery is not user replaceable. If decided to replace battery replace only
identical battery or equivalent as suggested by battery manufacture. Caution must be taken, there is a risk of explosion if a lithium battery is not correctly replaced.
NOTE
General Safety Cautions:
The chassis cover should only be removed by Extreme Networks personnel. There are no customer
serviceable components in this system. Repairs to the system must be performed by a Extreme Networks service technician.
Disconnect all power cords before working near power supplies unless otherwise instructed by a
maintenance procedure.
Do not attempt to lift objects that you think are too heavy for you.
When installing in rack, caution should be taken to load heavier devices in lowest portions of rack to
avoid a top-heavy hazard.
Do not place a monitor or other objects on top of the equipment. The chassis cover is not designed to
support weight.
Be extremely careful when measuring high voltages, servicing cards, panels or boards while the
system is powered on.
Only use tools and equipment that are in perfect condition. Do not use equipment with visible
damage.
Protecting electrostatically sensitive devices (ESD): To protect electrostatically sensitive devices (ESD)
always wear a wristband before carrying out any work on PC boards and modules. Transport PC

boards only in electrostatic packaging. Always place PC boards on a grounded surface before working on them.
Laying cables: Lay cables so as to prevent any risk of them being damaged or causing accidents,
such as tripping.
The system is designed to operate in a typical Telco environmental controlled service environment.
Choose a site that is:
Clean and free of airborne particles (other than normal room dust).
Well-ventilated and away from sources of heat including direct sunlight.
Away from sources of vibration or physical shock.
Isolated from strong electromagnetic fields produced by electrical devices.
Maximum ambient room temperature shall not exceed 35ºC (95ºF)
In regions that are susceptible to electrical storms, we recommend that you plug your system into a
surge suppressor.
Sicherheitshinweise
