Installation Instructions
CDW10U5 for 3-wire mains systems
CDW10U52L for 4-wire mains systems (with externally switched Maintained Live)
The CD BOX is an intelligent connection box providing
connections for up to ten luminaires, five MLS2000CDR
dedicated detectors and five switch inputs. The unit is
designed to simplify installation whilst providing an intelligent
managed lighting system. All the connections are pluggable.
(Hardwired options are also available.)
Parts list
1 CD BOX
1 4-pole Mains Power Connector (black c/w hood)
1 4-way Switch Input Connector c/w link
4 Open 20mm dia Grommets
1 Paper label for contractor to note box/circuit references
1 MLS Bus Plug Set (MLSPG)
A list of optional extras can be found on the back page.
NOTE
When installing patch leads between CD Boxes or
between CD Boxes and Detectors, care must be taken to
protect the plug connection from damage or
contamination by dirt or grease etc.
Electrical Connection
The connections to this equipment should be made by a
suitably qualified person and in accordance with the current
wiring regulations. For the following connections it will be
necessary to remove the screw-fixed access panel. (The
access panel must be replaced upon completion of any
installation work.)
10 industry standard 6-pin luminaire
output sockets
Rear view - cover removed
Output sockets for FailSafe Bus
and additional box interface leads
MLS Bus and FailSafe Bus Mains supply
Plug/socket connection to reduce installation time
5 detector and 5 switch input sockets
along the front of the unit
Fixing
The box should be sited on a suitable, smooth, flat surface
using the two end fixing flanges. Consideration should be
given to the box’s location as access will be required to install
the plugs.
The box must not be distorted when fixing. (If the box is to be
mounted on an uneven surface, it may be necessary to use
packing pieces or self- adhesive stand-off feet.)
When the CD Box is to be rod-fixed, the fixing should be
substantial enough to withstand the action of plugging and unplugging connectors.

Pluggable Wiring
Ensure that suitably rated cable is used to fit and fix the hood
to the base of the plug.
Hardwired
Insert the four-pin mains plug into the socket on the CD Box.
To connect the cable into the terminal block it will be
necessary to fit a cable restraint. This can be attached to the
20mm dia cable entry holes. Most forms of cable
restraint/containment are suitable when used with a 20mm
dia adaptor.
A red LED indicates when power is present.
MLS Bus Connection
Note: The MLS Bus is polarity-conscious.
The cable used should be two-core 1.5mm unscreened
2
twisted pair, mains-rated LSF insulated.
The MLS Bus connection can be made in one of two ways:
1) Using ready-assembled extension leads (as listed on the
back page).
2) Using the MLSPG plug set. Fit cable as the above
specification, then assemble on site to the required
lengths.
Emergency Testing
The CD Box is able to operate three types of emergency test:
1.Conventional - Where the test is conducted by switching
the maintained live supply externally (CDW10U52L only).
2.Test switching through the MLS bus - The power supply
(RB2000) is supplied fitted with an emergency test key-switch
which communicates through the bus by opening a normally
closed relay in the CD Box, thus breaking the maintained live
supply to simulate a mains failure.
Both these options require manual recording of the test
results.
3.With an automatic test system such as the Ex-Or
FailSafe - The CD Box has provision for linking an
addressable emergency test bus. Although designed for use
with the Ex-Or FailSafe system, the CD Box may be used with
any emergency testing bus.

Emergency Testing continued
The FailSafe bus is polarity conscious. To assist with
installation, the input and outlet terminals have polarity
indicated with a + or -.
Connection to the CD Box may be via the plug set FSPG
using cable to the required specification (see Emergency
Testing literature) or via ready-made leads FS5M and FS10M
(see separate data sheet for full specification).
When making up bus connection leads or purchasing readymade leads it is the installing contractor’s responsibility to
ensure compatibility with the system used.
Should it be necessary to remove the CD Box from either the
MLS or the FailSafe bus system, by un-plugging the male and
female connections from the box and linking them together,
the continuity of the bus is maintained.
At this point, the access panel should be re-fitted as further
access is not necessary.
Luminaire Connection
Note: only one luminaire should be connected to each
outlet.
There are 10 luminaire outlets (5 pairs) on each box. Each
luminaire is connected by a flying lead and GST18/6 plug,
Ex-Or part code CPW6. (A full list can be found on the back
page.)
Live output
Override Switch Input Connection, Normal Operation
Note: Each switch input overrides the two luminaire
outlet sockets with the corresponding numbers.
The switches should be two-way with a centre off position.
When operating with detectors set to semi-automatic,
retractive switches are recommended. For override or
non-detector operation, latching switches should be used.
The connection to the box is via the four-way smaller rewireable plug.
The connections must be as detailed.

Override Switch Input Connection, OneSwitch Operation
Note: OneSwitch input controls the two luminaire outlet
sockets with the corresponding numbers.
The switches should be double-pole push-to-make retractive
switches.

Digital dimming control - Maximum 4 ballasts per output

(wired in parallel)
On emergency luminaires with FailSafe testing, care should
be taken to ensure the correct polarity of connections. Use
plug EPW2 or lead and plug EPW223. Connect the FailSafe
lead to the red two-pin sockets on the back of the box (not
under the connection cover).
Detector Connection
Note: each detector controls the two luminaire outlet
sockets with corresponding numbers.
The connection of the MLS2000CDR detectors is simplified
by the use of plug-in patch leads which are available in 2m,
3m, 5m and 10m lengths. When plugging into the box, care
should be taken to select the correct socket. (Use only Ex-Or
patch leads. Do not exceed 10m length on any patch lead.)
The box operates a system of hierarchy whereby a detector
will control all the luminaire outlets to the left up to the point
where another detector is connected.

As with the detectors, the override inputs operate a system
of hierarchy, overriding all outlets to the left up to the point
where another switch-plug is present. In order to stop the
influence of a switch at any point, insert a plug with the link
fitted and no other connection to it.
Note that the hierarchy of override switches operates in
parallel with, and independent from, the hierarchy of the
detectors and will take priority over any detectors connected
in its path.

In the event of additional luminaire outlets being required, it is
possible to create a notional 20, 30, 40 or 50-way CD Box by
connecting boxes together. The hierarchy system for both
detectors and override switches will then extend to all linked
boxes.
CD Boxes may be linked together by using the 2m, 3m, 5m
and 10m patch leads plugged into the expansion sockets on
the back of the box (use only Ex-Or patch leads). A
maximum of five CD Boxes may be linked this way.
