3 INTRODUCTION
The A10 -- MEH 30 and A10 -- MEH 44 are two feed units for MIG/MAG welding using ESAB’s A10 wire advance system. Both wire feed units are constructed in the same way and have the same dimensions, excluding length.
The MEH 44 has been made larger to accomodate a larger wire feed mechanism and a wire reel with an outer of 44 cm. The MEH 30 will accept wire reels up to 30 cm in diameter. Hence the designation 30 and 44. The motors are controlled electronically and are identical on both units, carrying the designation E. The letter M stands for wire feed unit and H indicates the generation.
The MEH 30 has switches for 2/4 step trigger action and for normal/inch start. The MEH 44 also has a switch for reversing the feed motor to make it easier to remove thicker wires from the welding hose. These controls are located on the dividing panel behind the lid. The socket for connection of a remote control device is on the front panel and the remote control comes into action as soon as it is connected to the wire feed unit.
For a wire feed unit to be complete it must be equipped either with a turnable, counterbalance device or a carriage. A turnable or counterbalance device allow the wire feed unit to be mounted on a pivot on the power source. A carriage allows the wire feed unit to be moved easily over the floor or work table. A wire feed unit and turnable or carriage can also be fitted with a support device and suspended over the work place.
ESAB’s accessories for the product can be found on page 116.

Casing
The wire feed unit has a casing of stove enamelled sheet and is divided vertically into two sections. The first section, covered by a screwed lid, contains the circuit and solenoid valve.
The second section is open at the rear and the top and sides are covered by a lid. The lid is hinged at the top and held by a manually operated catch at the bottom. this section contains the wire feed mechanism, drive assembly and connection terminals for the welding hose. Mounted on the dividing panel behind the feed mechanism are switches for 2/4 step trigger action and for normal/inch start.
The MEH 44 also contains a switch for reversing the wire feed. The potentiometer for setting the burn--back time can be reached through a hole in the dividing panel. The wire is shielded from dust and contact by a polyester strip fastened to the rear edge of the lid. In the baseplate is a grommet through which the welding cable passes from the power source.

Wire feed mechanism MEH 30
The wire feed mechanism is driven by a permanent magnet electric motor. The motor is united to a worm gearbox with a feed roller on the output shaft. The gears on the feed shaft drive a thrust roller. The wire is advanced by the rollers and power is received from two driving rollers. Pressure is applied to the wire by a blade attached to the bracket supporting the thrust roller.
The blade spring is lever--shaped and allows the thrust roller to be moved out of the way when changing the wire or cleaning the outlet nozzle. When the thrust roller is released the same pressure is applied to the wire as before.T his pressure can be adjusted using the knob.
The connection plate on the wire feed unit is used for connecting welding current, control current, shielding gas, and the wire, all in a single coupling. The wire outlet nozzle is attached to the connection plate by a locking pin. No tools are needed to replace the nozzle. On the connection plate is a power relay which closes when current flows in the welding circuit.
The feed roller and thrust roller have three grooves for different wire dimensions. The rollers need not be changed when changing to thicker or thinner wire, just moved sideways. The positions of the feed roller on the shaft is adjusted using one or two shims. T he thrust roller automatically adjust to the current position in relation to the feed roller. The feed mechanism is insulated from the casing.
MEH 44
The feed mechanism in the MEH 44 is largely constructed of the same components as the MEH 30. The connection plate, thrust roller and blade spring with adjusting screw are all identical.
The main difference between the two feed mechanisms is that the MEH 44 has four driving rollers. Two motors connected in series each drive one feed roller and one thrust roller.Drive force is divided equally between the two pairs of roller. Any slip due to differences in the diameters of the rollers is evended out in the motors.
The thrust rollers are housed in a bogie mounted on a shaft. This is arranged so that the thrust applied on each pair of rollers is the same. The bogie can easily be removed once the blade spring is moved to the side. No tools are needed. Between the two pairs of rollers is an intermediate nozzle that guides the wire. The wire feed mechanism is insulated from the casing.
Regular equipment
The electronic components are on a circuit card mounted on the dividing panel. Internal cables are connected to the card by multipin connectors. The control cable is connected to a bolted terminal.
Turnable
The turnable is a ttached at the r ear of the wire feed unit. It is delivered with an insulated pivot which can be fitted in a hole on the top of the power source, allowing the wire feed unit to be swung around as far as the gas bottle.
On top of the turnable is the brake hub for the wire reel. The brake hub can be fitted in either of two holes for 30 or 44 cm reels.

Carriage
The carriage has a pair of rubber wheels on a reinforced axle and is fitted to the rear of the wire feed unit to a llow it to be moved easily. Two castors are included for fitting under the front panel. The brake hub is mounted on a bracket on the top of the carriage.
Suspension device
The suspension device is intended to allow the wire feed unit to be hung above the work place. The device has a large oval hole for a lifting hook or the like and is bolted to the turnable or carriage along with the brake hub.
Counterbalance device
The purpose of the counterbalance device is to support the welding hose and make the welder’s job easier. The device is combined with a mast which holds the welding hose. The mast can be pulled down into a horizontal position or lifted up into a vertical position by the counterbalance device.
The counterbalance device has a rear section, an arm and a spring assembly. The rear section is bolted to the casing of the wire feed unit and forms the attachment point for the spring. The arm is pivoted on the rear section and has a tube which fits over the insulated pivot on the power source. The spring, a stiff flat spiral spring, is attached at its centre to the arm by an adjusting screw.
The brake hub is positioned at the centre of rotion between the rear section and the arm. This means that the lifting force remains the same whether the reel is full or empty. The lifting torque can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the adjusting screw with an allen key. In this way the counterbalance force can be adjusted for various welding guns. The counterbalance device comes in two versions, one for the MEH 30 and another for the MEH 44.
Mast
The mast consist of two pressed channels which are joined during assembly and bolted below the wire feed unit using a clamp. The spring assembly is fitted to the top end of the mast and provides a smooth transition for the welding hose as it leaves the mast. The welding hose is held in place by securing straps.
Since the mast is mounted on the wire feed unit the welding hose has a straight run from the wire feed unit. This contributes to uniform wire feeding and reduced wear.
5 INSTALLATION
