Connecting the Scanner to Your Computer

For PC users:
Unless your PC already has a SCSI board installed, you need to install one, along with SCSI driver softwar e. Install the SCSI board according to the directions included with it. Also see “Installi ng a SCSI Interface Boad” on page 1-6.
If your PC has a SCSI board up and ru nning, connect t he scanner as described in the next section.
Note:
You will need to install the SCSI driver that is normally included with Windows 95, 98, or NT (see yo ur sy stem d ocumentation for instructions), or the dr iv er d escri bed in the SCSI board installation documentation.
For Macintosh u ser s:
Conventional M acintosh c omputers have buil t-in SCSI ports; therefore you do not need to in stall a SCSI boar d on a Macintosh . Follow the direction s below to connect your scanner and computer.
1-10
Setting Up the Scanner
Understanding SCSI connections
Read the following sections to determine how to set up your SCSI devices and whether you need any optional SCSI cables.
Daisy Chain
The SCSI interface allows you to connect up to seven devices (such as a scanner, hard disk, CD-ROM, and so on) to the computer, in what is called a “daisy chain” arr angement. Only the first SCSI devi ce i n a daisy chain is connected to the c omputer; eac h of the o ther devi ces is connected to another SCSI device.
SCSI Cables
You ma y need to purchase SCSI c ables before setting up your SCSI daisy chain. Be sure the SCSI cable connectors are suitable for your hardware, depending on the maker of your SCSI devic e and SCSI interface board.
1
SCSI ID and t ermi nator
Each device has a SCSI ID number : the computer is usually number 7, and each of the other devices must have a different number between 0 and 6. Also, the first device and the last device in the chain (not including the computer) must have a terminator. No other device can have a terminator, or if a terminator does exist, it must be turned off or removed.

Using Your Scanner
Sizing Up Your S ystem
Your scan ner is suff ic ient fo r mos t scan ning needs , but if you a re not satisified with the quality o f the ima ge s on your monitor or with the speed of image processing, read this section. While it does not contain specific recommendations, it describes various possibilities for improving your scanning system. For further information, seek advice from your dealer or an experienced scanner us er.
RAM and hard disk size
Scanned images use much more memory than text files, so you may ne e d more RAM (Random Access Me mory) in your computer and a larger hard disk than you have used previously.
Accelerator boards
In addition to memory, processing speed is importan t because large files take longer to process than small ones. Therefore, y ou may want to add an accelerator board to your computer.
2
Video cards
A video card that is sufficient for text may not be good enough for displaying graphic images, especially in color. If all your scanned images look coarse on your monitor, you may want to upgrade your video card. You will need 24-bi t color, also called true color or mi llions of colors, to make the highest q uality im age reproductions.
Using Your Scanner
2-9
Monitors
The resolution of your monitor affects the quality of the image you see. Consider a high resolution monitor if you do precise color work, but also be sure you have a high quality vid e o ca rd.
File compression software
Many different programs are available to make image files smaller for storage or transmission. For example, some compression software can store a 3MB image file on a 1.44MB floppy disk, an d co mpress i mages and r es tore t h em with no los s of data or quality; others compress images more , but the restored file is not exactly the same as the original. The difference between the original and restored files is, however, almost unnoticeable.

Quality problems
The entire image is distorted o r blu rred.
Make sure that the document is placed fl at agains t the document table.
You may have accidentally moved the document during scanning. Chec k the posit ion of the do cument and d o not move it while the scanner is operating.
See that the scanner is not t il ted or plac ed on an unst able s urfac e.
Part of the image is distort e d or blurred.
Part o f th e d oc ument may be wri nkl ed , wa rpe d, o r no t in co nta ct with the document table. Be sure the document is uniformly flat.
Caution:
c
Edges of the document are not scanned.
The document table has non-readable areas ar ound the edges. If part of your document extends beyond the maximum limits marked on the document table edge guides, you may have to reposition your document so that the image you want to sca n is within the readable area .
4-12
Do not place heavy objects on the document table.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Color is patchy or distorted at the edges of the image.
If the document is very t hick or warped at the edges, the e dges of the image may be discolored. Cover the edges of the document with opaque paper to block outside light.
If part of the document extends beyond the document table, that edge ma y n o t b e in cont a c t with t h e d ocument t a b l e . Change the position o f the document.
The image is faint or out of focus.
Check that the document is placed flush against the document table.
Check the Gamma setting in your so ftware.
Check the Exposure se tti ng in your so ftware.
The image is too dark.
Adjust the brightness with your software. Also check the brightness and contrast values of your display screen.
Straight lines in the image are jagged.
The document may be p lac ed at an an gle on the d ocumen t ta bl e. Align it so that the horizontal and vertical lines are carefully aligned with the scales on the top and side of the document table.

The image does not look the same as the original.
Try different combinations of image settings using your scan ne r software.
Your soft ware may not have sufficient color matching a nd color management features, or the se components of your software may not be corre ctly insta lled. (See y our softwa re and com puter manuals.)
If you are importing an image file into your application software , make sure the file format is one your software can read. Also check that the image settings in your applicati on are appropriate for the type of image you wa nt to scan. (See your software manual.)
A line of dots is always missing in the scanned image.
If this happens in your printed image only, your printer or its print head is probably malfunctioning. (See your printer manual.)
If this happens on both your sc re en and pri ntout, the sca nner's sensor may
be malfunctioning. Consult your dealer.
A line of dots always appears in the scanned image.
If this happens on both your screen and printout, the paper path guide of the Auto Document Feeder or the document table may be dusty or scratched. Clean the paper path guide as described on page 4-3, or clean the document table. If the problem still exists the guide may be scratched and require replacement.
