Installing the First Ink Cartridges
1. Turn on the printer.
2. Lower the printer’s output tray, pull out the extension, and
open the cover.
3. Shake the package of ink cartridges four or five times. Then
remove the cartridges from the package. (Don’t shake them
after removing the packaging.)
5. Lower each ink cartridge down into its holder with the

you may inhibit normal operation and printing.
4. Open the cartridge cover.
7. Press the H ink button and close the printer cover.
The green P power light flashes as your printer charges ink

Running a Printer Check
You can run a printer check to determine whether a problem
comes from the printer itself or some other source.
1. Make sure both the printer and computer are turned off.
Then disconnect the USB cable from the printer.
2. Make sure letter-size or larger plain paper is loaded in the
printer.
3. Hold down the ) paper button, then press and release the
P power button. Continue holding down the ) paper
button until the green P power light starts to flash, then
release it.
The printer prints a nozzle check pattern. (If the pattern has
gaps, you need to clean the print head; see page 8.)
4. Turn off the printer after it prints the check page. Then
reconnect the cable and turn on your printer and computer.
❏ If the check page prints, the problem probably lies in
your software settings, the USB cable, or your
computer. It’s also possible that your software may not
be installed correctly. See your Start Here sheet for
instructions on reinstalling the printer software.
❏ If the check page doesn’t print, you may have a problem
with your printer. Try the suggestions in your Quick Guide or online User’s Guide. If nothing works, contact
your dealer or EPSON as described on your Start Here
sheet.
Additional Paper Loading Guidelines
❏ Don’t load paper above the arrow on the left edge guide.
❏ Load the printable side face-up. It’s often brighter or whiter
than the other side.
❏ Always load paper short edge first, even when printing in
landscape mode.
❏ Load letterhead or preprinted paper into the printer top
edge first.
❏ If you’re using special media, follow the instructions that
came with the media.
❏ You can load the following number of sheets of EPSON
special media:

Selecting the Correct Paper Type
Your printer automatically adjusts itself for the type of paper
you select in your print settings. That’s why the paper Type or
Media Type setting is so important. It tells your printer what
kind of paper you’re using and adjusts the ink coverage
accordingly. The table below lists the settings you should
choose for your paper:

To ensure good results, use genuine EPSON ink cartridges and
don’t refill them. Other products may cause damage to your printer
not covered by EPSON’s warranty.
You cannot print if a cartridge is empty. Leave any empty cartridges

remaining ink in the nozzles may dry out.

If your printouts are unexpectedly light, or dots or lines are
missing, you may need to clean the print head. This unclogs

Head Cleaning utility.
You can also clean the print head by holding down the H ink

Examining the Nozzle Check Pattern
Examine the nozzle check pattern you printed. Each staggered

print head.
1. Turn on the printer.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen to print a test page.
You see a window like this one:

Cleaning the Printer
To keep your printer working at its best, you should clean it
several times a year.
1. Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord, and
disconnect the printer cable.
2. Remove all paper, then use a soft brush to clean any dust or
dirt from the sheet feeder.
3. If the outer case or inside of the sheet feeder is dirty, clean it
with a soft cloth dampened with a mild detergent. Keep the
printer cover closed to prevent water from getting inside.
4. If ink accidentally gets inside the printer, wipe it off with a
damp cloth.

Transporting the Printer
If you need to ship your printer, you must prepare it for
transportation in its original box or one of a similar size.
Caution:
To avoid damage, remove the ink cartridges when transporting the
printer.
1. Turn on the printer.
2. Remove any paper from the printer, then remove the paper
support.
3. Press the H ink button. The print head moves to the ink
cartridge replacement position, and the P power light
begins to flash.
4. Open the cartridge cover.
5. Pinch the back tabs of the cartridges as you lift them out of
the printer.
Warning:
If ink gets on your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap and
water. If ink gets in your eyes, flush them immediately with water.
6. Close the cartridge cover and press the ink button. Wait
until the print head locks in the far right position, then turn
off the printer.
7. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet. Then
disconnect the printer cable from the printer.
Warning:
Don’t touch the gears inside the printer.
Caution:
Never use a hard or abrasive brush, alcohol, or paint thinner for
cleaning; they can damage the printer components and case.
Don’t get water on the printer components and don’t spray
lubricants or oils inside the printer.
8. Remove any paper from the printer and remove the paper
support.
9. Open the printer cover and secure the ink cartridge holder
to the case with tape.
10 -EPSON Stylus C648/03

Caution:
Be sure to remove the tape after installing the printer in its new
location.
10. Close the printer cover, push in the output tray extension,
then close the output tray.
11. Repack the printer and its attachments in the original box
using the protective materials that came with them.
Keep the printer level as you transport it.
After transporting the printer, remove the tape securing the
print head. Plug in and power on your printer, install your ink
