Internet Access
The RoamAbout R1 supports Internet ac ce ss through an xDSL, Cable, ISDN or PSTN connection. Many DSL provi ders use PPPoE to establish communications wit h end users. The RoamAbout R1 includes a built-i n client for PPPoE which el iminates the need to install this service on your computer.
Shared IP Address
The RoamAbout R1 pro vides Internet access f or up to 32 us ers with a shared IP address. Multiple users on your network can browse the Web at the same time using only one ISP account.
Access and Application Support
Virtual Server
If you have a fi xed IP addre ss, you can s et u p t he Roam About R1 to act as a virtua l host f or network address translation. Remote users can access various s ervices at your site using a constant IP address. Then, dependi ng on the requested service (or port numb er), the RoamAbout R1 can route the request to the appropriate server (at another internal IP address). Thi s se cure s your network from direct attack by hacker s , and provides more flexible management by allowing you to change internal IP addresses without affecting outside access to your networ k.
User-Definable Application Sensing Tunnel
You can define special applicat ions that require multiple connections such as Internet gaming, videoconferencing, and Internet telephony. The RoamAbout R1 senses the application type and opens a multi - port tunnel for it.
DMZ Host Support
DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) allows you to open up a client PC for two-way unrestricted Internet acces s. For example, you would use th is feat ure i f yo u ha ve a cli ent P C tha t cannot run an Internet application properly from behind the NAT firewall or after configuring the special applications feature. Using this feature creates a security risk and s hould only be used as a last reso r t .

Access and Application Support
Security
The RoamAbout R1 supports security features that can de ny Internet access to specified users, or filter all requests for specific services. The RoamAbout R1’s firewall can also block common hacke r attac ks, i ncludi ng IP Spoofi ng, Land Atta ck , Ping of Dea th, IP with zero length, Smurf Attack, UDP port loopback, Snork Attack, TCP null scan, and TCP SYN flooding.
Virtual Private Network
The RoamAbout R1 supports three of the most commonl y used VPN prot ocols – PPTP, L2TP and IPSec. These protocols allow remote users to establish a secure connection to their corporat e ne twork. If your service provid er supports VPNs, then any of these protocols ca n be us ed to create an authenticated and encrypted tunnel for passing secure data over the Internet (i.e., a traditionally shared data network). The VPN protocols supported by the RoamAbout R1 are briefly described below.
— Point-to-Point Tunneling Protoco l – Pro vides a secure tunnel for remote
client access to a PPTP security gateway. PPTP includes provisions for call origination and flow control required by ISPs.
— Layer Two Tunneling Protocol – Includes most of the feat ures provided by
PPTP, but has less overhead and is more suited for managed networks.
— IP Security – Provides IP network-layer encryption. IPSec can support large
encrypti on networks (such as the Internet) by using digital certificates for device authentication.

LAN Connections
The three LAN ports on the RoamAbout R1 can auto-negotiate the connection speed to 10 Mbps Ethernet or 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet, as well as the transmission mode to half-dupl ex or full-duplex. These LAN ports also support auto-configurat ion for pin signals (auto-MDI/MDI-X) that allows you to use straight-through cable for connecting the RoamAbout R1 to any network device. Refer to the RoamAbout R1 SOHO Setup and Installation Guide.
Use twiste d-pair cable to connect any of the three LAN ports on the RoamAbout R1 to an Ethernet adapter on your PC. Otherwise, you can cascade any of LAN ports on the RoamAbout R1 to an Ethernet h ub or switch, and then connect your PC (or other network equipment) to the hub or switch.

Place the RoamAbout R1 in a position that is located in the center of wireless network. Normally, the higher you place the antenna ,
Computers equipped with PC Cards can communicate with each other as an independent wireless LAN by configuri ng ea ch co mputer to the same radio channel. However, the RoamAbout R1 can provide access to your wired/wireless LAN, or to the Internet, for all wireles s workstations. Each wireless PC in this network infras tr ucture ca n talk to any computer in the wireless group via a radio li nk, or access other computers or network resources in the wired LAN infrastructure or over the Internet via the RoamAbout R1.
The wireless infrastructure configurati on not only extends the accessibi lity of wireless P Cs to the wired LAN, but also doubles the effective wireless transmission range for wireless PCs by retransmitting incoming radio signals through the RoamAbout R1.

Encryption
If you are transmitting sensiti ve data across wir eless channels, you sho uld enable encryption. Encryption requires you to use the same set of encryption keys for the RoamAbout R1 and a ll of your wirele ss clients. The RoamAbout s upports 40-bit or 128-bit WEP (Wired Equivale nt P rivacy) encrypti on.
The posit ion o f each key is import ant. The cl ients must e nte r the sa me ke y in t he sam e positi on to com municate with the RoamAbout R1.
40-bit encryption uses 5-pair ASCII key (or 10 hexadecimal digits).
128-bit encr yption uses 13-pair ASCII key (or 26 hexadecimal digits) and supports
both 40-bit and 128-bit encrypt ion.
ASCII keys are case-sensitive.
Valid Hexadecimal digits are 0-9 or A-F.
Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) protects data transmitted between
NOTE
wireless nodes, but does not protect any transmissions over your wired network or over the Internet.
Configuring Client Services
The RoamAbo ut R1 incl udes a broad range of c lient s ervices, including f irewall pr otection, network add ress transla tion, virt ual serv er, connecti on suppo rt for specia l applica tions, and restr i cted Int ern et a cc ess for spec ifi ed c li ent s. You ca n co n figu re th es e fun ct io ns us ing the Setup Wizard by clicking on Start, or by selecti ng specific items from the page.
Firewall Protection
The RoamAbout R1’ s fi rewall can block common hacker attacks, including IP Spoofing, Land Attack , Ping of Dea th, IP wit h zero le ngt h, Smurf Att ack, UDP port lo opback, Snork Attack, TCP null sc an, and T CP SYN flood ing. The firewall does not significantl y affe ct system performance, so we advise leaving it enabled to protect your network users.
2-7
Page 28

Network Address Translation – NAT
Network Addre ss Tra nslation ca n be used to g ive mu ltipl e use rs ac cess t o the I nterne t wit h a single us er account, or to map the local ad d ress for an IP server (such as Web o r FTP) to a public address. This secures your network from direct attack by hackers, and provides more flexible management by allowing you to change internal IP addresses without
affecting outside access to your network.
NAT must be enabl ed to p rovid e multi-u ser acc ess to the Inte rnet , or to use
NOTE
the Virtual Server function.
Virtual Server
If you configure the RoamAbout R1 as a virtual server, remote users acces sing services such as the Web or FTP at your local sit e via public IP addresses can be aut omatically redirected to local servers conf igured with private IP addresses. Depending on the requested servic e (TCP/UDP port number), the RoamAbout R1 redirects the external service request to the appropriate server (located at another internal IP address ) .
The WAN interface must have a fixed IP address to utilize this function. For example, if you set T ype/Publi c Port to TCP/8 0 (HTTP o r Web) and the Pri vate I P/Port to 192. 168.2. 2/ 80, then al l HTTP re ques t from o utsid e use rs wil l be t ransfe rred to 192. 168.2. 2. The refore, by just en te r in g th e IP Ad d res s provi d ed by the I S P, I nt er n e t users ca n ac cess the servi ce they need at the loca l address to which you redirect them.
Some of the more common TCP service ports include:
HTTP: 80
FTP: 21
Telnet: 23
POP3: 110.

Enabling Special Applications
Some applications require multiple connections , such as Internet gaming, videoconferencing, Internet telephon y and others. These applications may not work when Network Address Translation (NAT) is enabled.
Specify the port normally associated with an application in the Trigger Port field, select the prot ocol type as TCP or UDP, t hen enter the public ports a ssociated wi th the trigger por t
to open them for inbound traffic.
If an applicat ion still cannot function correctly after enabling multiple
NOTE
ports, you may have to open the client PC for full Inter net access using the DMZ Host option.
Virtual DMZ Host
If you have a client PC that cannot run an Internet application properly from behind the NAT firewall, or after configuring the Spe cial Applications function, you can open the
clien t u p to unr estri ct ed tw o - w ay I nt er n e t ac cess.
Adding a client to the DMZ (Demilitari zed Zone) may expose your local network to a variety of security risks. Only use this option as a last resort.
Remote Management
By default , management access is only available to us ers on your local network. You can manage the RoamAbout R1 from a remote host by adding the IP address of an admin istrator
in the Remote Management page.
NOTE
If you spe cify an IP address of 0.0.0.0, an y ho st in your local n et work can
manage the RoamAbout R1.
Only one management se ssion can be logged in at a time. You must log o ut
of the current session on the system before you can manage the RoamAbout R1 from a different system.
Client Filtering
You can filter Internet access for local clients based on IP address, application type (i.e., HTTP port), and time of day.
2-9
Page 30
Configuring Client Services
MAC Filtering
You can filter Interne t ac ce ss for local wired and wireless clients base d on the MAC address.
MAC Address Control
Every client that connects to the network has a unique MAC (Media Access Control) address on his or her Ethernet adapter. An administrator can have more control- and more security- over the network by specif ying which MAC addresses a re al lowed to access the RoamAbout R1. You ca n enable this featu r e by selecting Enabled.
Connection Control
Connection control allows an admini strator to allow or deny cl ients access to th e RoamAbout R1 and the Internet. Select Connection control to control whi ch of the wired and wireless clients will be abl e to connect to the RoamAbout R1 and to the Internet. If a client is denied connection to this device, it means that the client can’t access the Internet and some network resources. Select to Allow or Deny clients whose MAC addr es ses are not listed in the Control table.
When a wired client is allowed to connect to the RoamAbout R1 it has full access to the Internet and net wor k resources.

— Connect to the Internet — Use the Print Server function — Communicate with the clients on the wireless LAN — Use the RoamAbout R1’s Web configuration
Associati on Contro l
The Association process is the exchange of information between wireless clients and a wireless acc ess point to establish a link between them. A wireless client is capable of transmitting and receivi ng data to an access point only after the association process is successfully completed.
Association control allows an a dministrator t o allow or deny wire less clients from linking to the RoamAbout R1. S elect Asso ci atio n cont ro l to control which of the wireles s clients will be able to associate with the wireless LAN. If a client is denied association to the wireless LAN, it means that the client can’ t s end or receive any data through the RoamAbout R1.
