3. What is energy management?
The first target in an energy
management programme is to
raise awareness of energy
consumption and work out exactly
where you might be able to make
improvements. By measuring and
analysing your current usage, you
can identify areas of wastage and
come up with measures to make
energy savings.
The Enistic Energy Manager Starter
Kit is suitable for use on all officebased electrical equipment, such
as desk-based PC systems,
photocopiers, printers, vending
machines, audio or visual
equipment, televisions, plasma
screens and servers. With this level
of flexibility, you are able to start
measuring how much individual
pieces of equipment cost to run
and begin the process of
identifying the energy hogs within
your organisation. This information
can be used to encourage
behavioural change and, over
time, to replace certain devices
with more energy-efficient
equipment.

Once targets have been set for
reducing the energy bill and
carbon emissions, it is important to
be able to track the impact of any
behavioural or infrastructure
changes, through ongoing
monitoring.
Quick savings are usually possible
for most organisations, simply
through behavioural changes.
Extensions to your Enistic kit can
easily be purchased as required, to
allow you, for example, to
automate certain equipment (such
as PCs or overhead projectors) so
that they turn off automatically
overnight and/or at weekends.
Further savings can be made
through longer-term projects, and
ongoing monitoring will help
ensure that an organisation
continues to make progress
towards its targets.

Using the plug-in Smart Socket
Energy Manager Starter Kit
Order code: EN-SSK
1. The Smart Socket will enable
you to measure the electricity used
by a particular piece of equipment
(e.g. photocopier, PC, printer).
2. Simply plug an electrical device
into the Smart Socket and then
connect the Smart Socket to your
electricity supply.
3. Use the red button to switch the
unit on or off. (If you choose to
upgrade your software to Energy
Manager Pro or Online, this
switching can be controlled
remotely.)
4. The plug-in Smart Socket
communicates wirelessly with the
SECL (which is pre-configured to
automatically detect the Smart
Socket). It should be located within
30 metres of your SECL.
5. The Enistic system uses a
meshing technology, meaning that
every module ‘talks’ to every other
module, in order to maximise
range and reliability. If you decide
to extend your kit, you should not
require an additional SECL, so long
as you ensure that each module is
within 30 metres of any
other module.
If a Smart Socket is
more than 30 metres
away from the SECL, it will not be
able to communicate directly but
will use other modules in range to
‘pass on’ the message to ensure
100% operation.
6. Once you have monitored the
energy usage of a particular
device, using Energy Manager, you
can move the Smart Socket to
assess a different piece of
equipment.
7. If you wish to extend your kit, so
that you can monitor (and/or
automatically control) more
devices, 5-way Smart Sockets are
also available to purchase via our
website.

Further functions of Energy Manager
History screen – this is where you can
access all your past energy data. If you
upgrade to Energy Manager Pro, you will
be able to print reports and export this
historical data to Excel for further
analysis.
The Meters screen lists all the meters and
smart sockets in your system. It is easy to
rename any of these in order to highlight
which is measuring the power used by a
particular piece of equipment or
workstation. New sockets and meters are
automatically detected and added, so you
will not normally need to do any configuration in order to get the system
reporting.
Settings – allows you to enter details of
the cost of your electricity.
The system supports three tariff bands -
Day, Night and Weekend. It also allows
you to adjust your CO2 production figures,
which you can reduce by moving to a
lower carbon emission tariff from your supplier.
Debug screen – shows in detail the communications between any Smart
Energy Controllers and the sockets and meters. This is useful for
troubleshooting the system.

5. Using your Enistic Kit to Save Energy
Getting Started
Once the equipment in the kit is
connected and plugged in, you are
ready to take the first step in
monitoring your energy usage and
then use this knowledge to make
savings. The Enistic system will
give you a detailed picture enabling you to access real-time
data and focus right in on the
energy consumption of specific
devices.
Identifying Power Hogs
Energy Manager Lite will track the
energy usage of your chosen
pieces of equipment. It will clearly
show you, in graph form, which
devices are using the greatest
amounts of energy and at what
times.
Standby / Overnight Savings
Energy Manager can be used to
see how much power is used when
a device is on standby, compared
to when it is turned off. This will
give your organisation a better
idea of where energy is being
wasted overnight or at other times
when the premises are not in use.
Significant savings can be achieved

by using this data to encourage
behavioural change (such as
turning off the photocopiers at
night, rather than leaving them on
standby). It might also indicate
that greater savings could be made
by automating some of the
switching off of equipment –
something that is easy and
inexpensive to achieve by
extending your kit and upgrading
to Energy Manager Pro.
Making Energy Saving More
Visible
Energy Manager presents energy
data in a very accessible graph
format, so that it is easy to share
findings with colleagues and
encourage everyone to take more
of an interest in energy saving.

Monitoring in More Detail
Further information is provided
below about options for extending
your kit. The Enistic system makes
it easy to monitor your total
energy usage, and to break down
this information to analyse the
energy consumption of a
department, an individual
workstation or a circuit such as the
air-conditioning or server room.
This can be helpful when
encouraging people within an
organisation to take responsibility
for reducing their own personal
energy usage. Energy Manager
also works as a good visual aid
within the classroom when
teaching about energy costs and
how to reduce carbon emissions.

4) Your broadband connection is not functioning.
6. Troubleshooting Guide
Symptom Possible resolution
Your SECL is not
appearing online.
1) You have plugged the SECL into your laptop by
mistake. Try removing it from your laptop and plug it
into your broadband router or Intranet.
2) You have a firewall running that is blocking the
SECL communications. Try adjusting your firewall to
allow outbound traffic on port 80.
3) You have not plugged in the network cable. Try
plugging in your network cable to the SECL at one end
and the other into your broadband router or Intranet.
From any computer on the network, try accessing the
Internet to see whether you can access other sites.

Your SECL is not
showing up on the
Energy Manager
Lite software.
Try going to the Debug tab. You should see a list of
information scrolling up the screen.
If you do not see this type of information, it could be
because you have a firewall running that is blocking
your network communication.
Try asking your Network Administrator to unblock
UDP broadcasts on port 53004 and 53005.
If you are running a Windows firewall, try temporarily
disabling the firewall to see if that fixes the problem.

SymptomPossible resolution
Your SECL looks like
it is working but no
Smart Sockets are
connecting.
There are no lights
on your SECL.
You can see debug
information on
Energy Manager’s
Debug tab but you
cannot get the SECL
to respond to
commands you
send it (such as
changing the
reporting interval,
etc).
Check that the Smart Socket is located no more than
30 metres away from the SECL. The wireless signal
should pass through walls and ceilings, but it may be
blocked by some materials (e.g. foil-backed
insulation). You may need to reposition the devices.
When Smart Sockets are trying to connect, the LEDs
on the unit flash rapidly. Once they have connected
to your SECL, they begin to flash once every 10
seconds.
The power supply is not plugged in or the network
cable is not plugged in.
This can be caused by your firewall blocking
communications between your computer and the
SECL.
If you are running Energy Manager Lite on a laptop
computer that is using wireless, try plugging your
laptop into a wired Ethernet connection and trying
again.

Channel Smart Meters should be
fitted by a qualified electrician, but
this is quick and easy and should
not involve any disruption to your
power supply.
Any new Enistic devices will be
automatically detected by your
system, so that you can start to
monitor them immediately via
Energy Manager.
Upgrading your Reporting System
If you would like a greater level of
detail and even more
comprehensive reporting, you may
wish to upgrade to Energy
