Our Talk 4 Augm entative C ommunic ator is a p owerful c ommunic ation t ool loaded with man y useful features. The Talk 4 has 12 levels and single switch illuminated auto scanning. It has a unique slot so you can easily slide in your ic on overlay. The 2 1/8" X 2 1/8" icon ar ea requires on ly the slight est touch to play your “tr ue voice” rec ording. Th e rugged and reliable Talk 4 is p ortable, lig htweight and easy to access. S ize: 11"L x 4"W x 2¾"H. Requires 4 AA Batteries.
BATTERY INSTALLATION:
Make sure unit is in the OFF position by rotating the ON-OFF-VOLUME control counter clockwise until a "click" is heard. Remove each scr ew in both battery c ompartm ents and install two brand new “AA” alkaline batteries into eac h - four batteries t otal. R eplace both battery covers and screws.
OPERATIO N:
Rotate the ON-OFF-VO LUME contr ol to approxi mately its ' midway position. Aft er one second, you will hear a s ound or a verbal mes sage fr om the sp eaker. T his is the Level Announcement Mess age. The unit is now on Level One of the twel ve levels pr ovided in the Communic ator.
PLAYING MESSAGES:
At this time, you can access each of the 4 messag es on Level One by pressing an y one of the four icons, one at a tim e.
RECORDING MESSAGES:
Using one hand , press and hol d the Record bu tton on the und erside of th e unit. Using your other hand, press th e icon you wish to r ecord and speak in to the microphone. Releas ing the ic on or Record but ton will canc el recording. If you are goi ng to r ecord mor e than on e message, you may press and hold the record button whil e pressin g the appr opriate icons to r ecord your messages.
RECORDING LEVEL ANNOUNCEMENT MESSAGE:
Your Level Annou ncement Message m ay be ch anged at any tim e and can be renam ed "Level One th e Food Level " or "Level One J immie's Messages ", etc. S imply pr ess the R ecord button first, then pr ess the Level button an d speak your Level Announc ement Message in to the microphone. Note: to hear your new level message you must either cycle through all 12 levels by repeatedl y pressing th e Level announcement butt on until i t returns to Level One or t urn the un it OFF, wait several seconds and tur n the unit back ON. Your new Level One Announcement Message will now play.
CHANGING LEVELS:
Each time the L evel button is pressed, th e Talk 4 will advanc e to the next level. Pressin g the Level button on Level T welve will return t o Level One. Simp ly follow t he inst ructions above to record each of the four c ommunic ator mess ages or your Level Announcement M essage f or each l evel. Remember, t o play your Lev el Announc ement Mess age, you MUST cycle throu gh all remai ning levels and return to that particular l evel to h ear that Level Announcement Messag e.
VIBR ATION OPTI ON: (Special Order only) If your Talk 4 is equipped with th e optional Vibration Mod e, pressing any of the four ic ons to play a message w ill caus e the T alk 4 front p anel to vibrate. A mong oth er uses, t his enhanc es the ability of someone wh o is hearing-impaired to determine when the TALK 4 is pl aying. To turn th e Vibration Mode ON or OFF, pr ess icons Three an d Four simultaneously and hold unti l a “beep” is hear d. Note: Vibration does not activate while rec ording mess ages, chan ging Levels or during mess age scannin g.
MESSAGE SCANNING:
The Talk 4 has built-in Automatic Sc anning. P lug a capability s witch int o the 1/8” jack loc ated on th e rear of th e Talk 4 and press the capability switch. Upon release, the unit will sc an from l eft to right and continue scanning until the next press of the capability switch.
SCAN SPEED:
You can c ontrol the speed of the Mess age Sc anning by pressing the appr opriate ic ons simu ltaneously and holdi ng them until a “b eep” is h eard to increase or decrease the pause time b etween each message: One and T wo = 2 s econds, On e and Thr ee = 6 sec onds, One and Four = 9 seconds. The Talk 4 will “rem ember” your Sc an Speed s etting unt il the ne xt time you chan ge it.
AUDITORY CUEING:
During Mess age Scannin g you can enab le the Talk 4 to speak the message being scann ed, but at reduced volume. T his gives the us er an audit ory “pr eview” of t he curr ent mess age. Pressing the capabilit y switch again will play the current message at full volume. T o turn Au ditory Cueing ON or OFF, press ic ons Two and Thr ee simultaneously and hol d until a “beep” is heard.
PAPER ICON INSERTS: The Talk 4 uses paper icon inserts th at you pr int fr om your c omputer. You can download t he PDF file for the inset template from our webs ite. Each icon tem plate sh eet mak es three ins erts. C ut along t he dotted lin es using scissors or a pap er cutter. It is imp ortant t o cut acc urately along the dotted li ne so the icon i nsert will slide int o the T alk 4 icon s lot properly. If the ins ert is cut t oo large it will g et stuck. (See illustrations on back p age) Draw you picture or w ord on th e icon ins ert bef ore sliding into the Talk 4 slot. Never draw on the ic on insert after it has been inserted into th e Talk 4 a s a pen can permanently damage the surface of the cell. If you are going to use stickers on your icon insert sheet, th ey must l ay comp letely fl at otherwise they will get stuck. W hen slid ing the p aper ic on insert into the Talk 4 slot, make sure you gently press down the leading edge of the paper so it will not get stuck on the cell dividers. A small piece of tape m ay be us ed to hold the icon s heet fr om sliding out of the slot if the Talk 4 will b e moved around. S imply tap e the left edge of the ins ert to the T alk 4 b ody using a 1” long piece of tape. If you are laminating your paper icon insert, use a light laminate such as “Magic Cover” s elf-adhesive vinyl c overing. A ver y heavy l aminate will decr ease the s ensitivi ty of th e switch c ells. The l eading edge of th e icon sh eet should not be “rabbit eared” or t orn. REPLACING BATTERIES:
Replace b atteries regularly. Weak batteries will c ause the T alk 4 to act erratic ally, s uch as shutting off while playing messag es.
Use brand name ALKALINE b atteries ON LY (e.g. Duracel l or Ever eady Energ izer). Do NOT us e recharg eable b atteries. Do NOT mix new and old batteries. Do NOT over tighten the b attery c ompartm ent screws.
To extend batter y life, al ways shut the T alk 4 OFF when not in use. Always rem ove batteries when the uni t will not be used for extended periods of tim e. Dead batt eries often leak aci d and can caus e permanent damage to the communicat or.
CARRYING STRAP:
For safety purposes, the Carrying Strap has thumbscrews with a self-locking nut to prevent them from being rem oved fr om the str ap. To pr event a C hoking H azard, NEVER r emove the s elf-locking nuts .
When attaching the carrying strap, tighten the thumbscrews finger-tight only. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. The Carrying Strap was d esigned t o carry the Talk 4 from the should er only. NEVER carry the c ommunicator from the neck.
PRECAUTIONS:
Never hit the icon surf ace with a hard object or permanent damage can resu lt. Never tape or affix anything directly to the icon surface. Always keep a pap er insert install ed in the T alk 4 to pr otect t he icons. Always keep liquids far awa y from the commu nicator t o prevent perman ent damag e to the inter nal circ uitry fr om spill age.
