USER’S GUIDE
Bright lights!
Our new sequencer is designed for the visually impaired. The circular patterned red LED lights in the center give the user a visual cue for targeting and encourage the user to activate the switch. The angle of the big 5" switch is adjustable from 32 degrees to 90 degrees. The light can be turned on or off. This sequencer has a total of 300 seconds recording time and can be clamped. Also works as a switch. Size: 8"L x 8"W x 6 1/4"H. Requires 4 AA Batteries.
Operation:
1. Adjustable Angled switch Communicator requires four AA batteries. Use alkaline
batteries only (e.g. Duracell or Energizer brand). Do not use rechargeable batteries or any other type of batteries because they supply lower voltage and the unit will not perform properly. Never mix old and new batteries together or different brands or types together.
2. Gently turn the unit over to reveal the black battery compartments. Carefully
remove the small screws from each battery compartment cover using a Phillips head screwdriver, and slide the covers off. Observing proper (+) & (-) battery polarity, install four AA size batteries into the holders. Replace the battery compartment covers and screws.
3. There are two controls between the battery compartments; one is an ON/OFF switch
for the LED lights on the front of the switch. When turned ON, the LED lights will stay ON until this switch is turned OFF. Please Note: when finished using the switch turn the LED’s OFF to prevent battery drain. The second control it the ON/OFF/Volume knob. This is used when the switch will be used as a communicator.
4. To make a Recording, turn the ON/OFF/VOLUME knob ON you will hear a slight
click, then adjust the volume to an auditable level. Please Note: when recording make sure the LED lights are turned OFF. The Microphone is located on the left side of the unit. To record, flip the RECORD/PLAY switch to the RECORD position. Depress the Yellow switch plate and speak 6 to 8 inches from the microphone. When you are finished recording the first message, release the Yellow switch plate. To record all subsequent messages, simply depress the switch plate, speak into the microphone, releasing the switch plate after each message.
5. Messages can vary in length and the total record time is 300 seconds.
To play the messages, flip the RECORD/PLAY switch to the PLAY position. Activation of the Yellow switch plate will play the first message; the second activation will play the second message, and so on. To interrupt the messages and start at the beginning of the sequence, press the RESET button on the back of the unit.
6. The unit will retain recorded information indefinitely, even if the battery is
disconnected. Previously stored information will be erased only when new recording is performed.
7. Please Note: When re-recording messages, all messages on the unit will be erased.
8. To turn the unit off, turn the volume control knob counter-clockwise until you hear
an audible “click”.
9. The Adjustable Angled switch can be adjusted from 20 to 90 degrees by simply
losing the two knobs on the side of the unit and pulling up the big 5" Yellow Plate to the desired angle. Once you have the desired angle simply tighten the two set knobs to lock in the angle. Do not over tighten the set knobs. Finger tight is all that is needed. (See photo on back cover.)
10. All it takes is a slight push on the plate, a roll up action by your hand or a swiping
action to activate the switch. There are also three different spots on the black base mold to clamp the switch to a table top or wheelchair tray.
11. To use the switch, attach one end of the double ended 1/8" to 1/8" male cord
(included) into the back of the Adjustable Angled switch, via the 1/8" jack. Next plug the other end of the cord into your adapted toy or device. Make sure all connections or tight with no gaps. When the yellow Plate is pressed the toy or device will activate. Release the plate and your toy/device will turn off.

CHANGING THE NUMBER OF MESSAGE FIELDS:
With the unit ON starting from left to right press message cells 3 and 4 simultaneously. The unit will beep to indicate how many messages will be available. (E.G. three beeps for three messages, twice for two messages and once for a single message). If you cycle down to one message and then press cells 3 & 4 again the unit will go back to 4 messages. The unit will always default to 4 messages after it has been turned OFF and turned back ON. Included are a set of 3 black snap in place icon coves these are used to cover the fields that have been turned OFF.
MESSAGE SCANNING:
The Communicator has built-in Automatic Scanning. Plug a capability switch into the 1/8" jack located on the rear of the Communicator and press the capability switch. Upon release, the unit will scan from left to right and continue scanning until the next press of the capability switch.
SCAN SPEED:
You can control the speed of the Message Scanning by pressing the appropriate icons simultaneously and holding them until a “beep” is heard to increase or decrease the pause time between each message: One and Two = 2 seconds, One and Three = 6 seconds, One and Four = 9 seconds. The Communicator will “remember” your Scan Speed setting until the next time you change it.
AUDITORY CUEING:
During Message Scanning you can enable the Communicator to speak the message being scanned, but at reduced volume. This gives the user an auditory “preview” of the current message. Pressing the capability switch again will play the current message at full volume. To turn Auditory Cueing ON or OFF, press icons Two and Three simultaneously and hold until a “beep” is heard.
HEADPHONE USE:
Special feature allows you to choose one of three broadcast options: speaker only, headphones only, or speaker and headphones simultaneously. When using a set of headphones, set the toggle switch to Headphones only (only the user will hear message playback) or to Headphone & Speaker. The Communicator can be used with any standard set of head phones used with a walkman type player or MP3 player.
Clear Photo Holder Removal:
Rev 7/29/08
We have developed a 6-level, 8-message communicator for visually impaired persons. This unit has two dimmable 5 -watt fluorescent tubes. It provides intense background illumination. The icon holders are transparent which allows the therapist to use clear or transparent icons. Record and re-recording is accomplished by simply pushing a button. The unit records eight 5-second messages on 6 levels. Size: Wedge 15" x 9 ¾ " x 5 ¾ ". Icon holder 2" sq. Viewable area 1 5/8"x 1 5/8".
OPERATION:
1. Carefully turn over unit to reveal battery compartment. Remove the small black cover retained by a single Phillips head screw then, observing polarity, install four AA size batteries (included) into the holder. Alkaline batteries are recommended because they last longer. Do not use rechargeable batteries because they supply lower voltage and the unit may not perform as well. Please Note: The batteries only control the voice output of this unit, low voltage AC power is still needed to operate the florescent lightings.
2. The MICROPHONE, RECORD button and LEVEL dial are located on the bottom panel of the unit. (See illustration.)
3. Turn the unit on by rotating the VOLUME control knob (located next to the level knob) clockwise.
4. Move the LEVEL SELECTOR Switch located under the unit to Level 1.
5. To record, first depress and hold the red RECORD button located under the unit. Next while still depressing the Record button, depress one of the ten square plates on the front of the unit and speak into the microphone located on the bottom panel of the unit.
6. Release both the plate and the recording button when the recording is over. Play back your message by pressing and releasing the same square used to record. Each of the remaining squares can be programmed in the same manner. The unit will retain recorded information indefinitely, even if the battery is disconnected. Previously stored information will be erased only when a new recording is performed.
7. Move the LEVEL SELECTOR Switch to Level 2 and repeat Step 3. Continue programming additional levels, if needed.
8. To install your picture icons you must first remove the three screws located on the top of the icon frame holder. (See illustration). Next fold down the grid frame to expose the clear icon holders. At this time you should check that the florescent lights have not worked themselves loose. (This can happen during shipping.) Simply remove the corner top and bottom clear icon holders from each side of the unit. Next press on the metal end of each bulb to check it has not popped out of place then replace icon holders. With this unit you have the choice of using single icon cutouts per square and then covered with the clear overlays provided. To do this, simply bend the clear plastic overlay and slip the sides into the slots.

Or placing a full sheet (a thin single sheet only) with a set of ten icons. Icons can be made with Mayer-Johnson’s Boardmaker program sold separately, either on clear transparency or standard paper. Boardmaker for Mac catalog No. 4008 and No.4009 for PC computers. If you have an older version of Boardmaker you can download the grid template free of charge at www.mayerjohnson.com. Once there go to the download section, choose either PC or Mac files. Next click on pre-made grids and look under the letter V the file name is Visually Impaired Comm. Please Note: If you have any problems downloading or installing this file please contact Mayer-Johnson directly. We do not handle tech support for the Boardmaker program.
Caution: You must unplug this from the AC wall outlet when changing icons; failure to do so could put you at risk of electrical shock.
9.
Once your icons are in place, take note that they are seated properly with the mold. Next fold the grid frame back up into place and replace the three screws, taking
care not to over tighten, doing so will crack the unit’s frame.
10.
Now you are ready to plug the single pin end of the low voltage AC power cord into the jack on the bottom of the Communicator, and the other end into an 110V outlet.
11. Next turn the backlight dimming control knob located on the bottom of the unit
Changing light bulbs:
If the unit fails to light properly you will need to check or replace the florescent bulbs. First unplug the unit from the AC power cord. Next carefully turn the unit over on a flat stable surface. At this time you will need to remove the Velcro attached black Vinyl molding. There is a break in the center, where the two ends of the molding meet, carefully lift one end up and pull the molding away from the base until it is off completely. Once you have removed the molding, turn the unit back over. There are three No. 440 x ¼ inch Phillips head screws and nuts holding the body in place. Locate the two screws on each side of the unit, and the one screw in the front center of the unit and unscrew. Once this is done from the front of the unit carefully lift the body up, and gently fold it back from the base. (See illustration.) First check to see if the bulbs are seated properly, during shipping the bulbs could become loose causing them not to light up. (See step No. 8). If this does not solve the problem you will need to replace the bulbs. With one hand holding the metal end of the bulb, (not the glass) use your other hand to carefully pull back the Velcro safety strips, (see illustration) then carefully remove the bulbs one at a time and replace with two model F15 T8/CW G.E. Cool White 5-watt florescent bulbs or equivalent. Reinstall the Velcro safety straps, screws and nuts, then turn the unit over again and reinstall the Vinyl molding. Please Note: When reinstalling the Vinyl molding start from the center, this way the break will lineup as before.
Important Notes:

Totally–Tactile Communicator #2046
USER’S GUIDE
Communicate with textures!
Our new tactile communicator is a wonderful place for the VI user to start communication. It has 6 levels, 7 seconds per message, and a large textured level changer positioned in its center. Around the outside are six large different textures that you can record and play back your messages. It is mounted on a lazy Susan so it is easy to feel all of your choices as you slowly turn it to the desired message. Comes with adjustable vibration to help desensitize the user, and has adjustable contact time when feeling the switch from 1-12 seconds. Size: 14.5"L x 14.5"W x 3"H. Requires 4 AA Batteries.
Operation:
1. Totally–Tactile Communicator requires 4 AA batteries (Not included). Use
alkaline batteries only (e.g. Duracell or Energizer brand). Do not use rechargeable batteries or any other type of batteries because they supply lower voltage and the unit will not perform properly. Never mix old and new batteries together or different brands or types together.
2. The battery compartments are located under the unit. Carefully turn the unit over.
Remove the battery cover screws with a small Phillips head screwdriver. Once the screws are removed, lift the covers off to gain access to the battery compartments Install the batteries, being careful to observe proper battery polarity. Replace covers and screws.
3. Turn the unit ON by rotating the ON//OFF knob clockwise. Please Note: When
the unit is first turned on an announcement will play. The LEVEL will always be the last Level used before the unit was turned OFF, removing and or replacing the batteries. To record each level announcement do the following steps first press the RECORD button and hold, then press the Level changer plate, which is the center textured plate. Next speak your message, release both when done recording. To record the next level announcement first press the Level changer plate it will play a previous message, now you can record by first pressing the REC button and hold then press the Level changer plate and speak your announcement. Record all remaining Level announcements this way.
4. To record your messages, depress and hold the RECORD button first, then
depress one of the 6 textured plates and speak into the microphone located under the base of the unit. Release both buttons once recording is over. Playback your message by pressing and releasing the same textured plate used to record. Each of the remaining textured plates can be programmed in the same manner. (The unit will retain recorded information indefinitely, even if the batteries are removed. Previously stored information will be erased only when a new recording is performed.)
Voice Delay: The Tactile Communicator is equipped with a voice delay feature; this will allow a delay from 1 to 12 seconds before a message is played. The user will have to intentionally hold down one of the textured plates for the set amount of time before the message recorded for that plate will play. This feature is useful for visually and sensory delayed users. To adjust the time delay, turn the voice delay knob clock-wise to increase the delay and counter-clockwise to decrease the delay.
Vibration: The vibration knob turns the vibration ON/OFF and also adjusts the strength of the vibration felt when one of the textured plates is touched. Clock-wise increases the vibration counter-clockwise lowers it and turns it off.
Please Note: When recording messages the vibration feature should be turned OFF to prevent any unwanted background noise on your recordings.
Important Notes:
If the Tactile Communicator will not be used for a long period of time, e.g. one month or longer, we recommend removing the batteries from the unit during storage to prevent battery drain or leakage, which can cause damage to the unit.

Symbol Communicator for the Blind - #4040
USER’S GUIDE
This portable symbol communicator can store 6 messages on 6 levels for a total of 36 6-second messages. Touch one of the six removable tactile symbols to activate a message. At the same time you will feel a vibration, which can be turned off if not desired. Messages can be recorded and re-recorded as often as you wish.
Tactile symbols are a graphic language system using concrete or abstract representations that are both permanent and manipulatable and can be tactually discriminated by an individual who is totally blind or dual sensory impaired. Included is a recommended starting kit of 6 tactile symbols: Bathroom; Something wrong; Drink; I want; Finished; Eat. Additional symbols and custom vocabularies are available from Tactile Talk. Size: 14"L x 10½"W x 2"H. Requires 4 AA Batteries.
Operation:
1. Carefully turn over unit to reveal battery compartment. Remove the cover then, observing polarity, install four AA size batteries into the holder. Alkaline batteries are recommended because they last longer. Do not use rechargeable batteries because they supply lower voltage and the unit may not perform as well.
2. Move the LEVEL SELECTOR Switch located under the unit to Level 1.
3. To record, depress and hold the red RECORD button located under the unit. While still holding the RECORD button, depress one of the six square plates on the front of the unit and speak into the microphone located on the back panel of the unit.
Operation (continued):
5. Move the LEVEL SELECTOR Switch to Level 2 and repeat Step 3. Continue programming additional levels, if needed.
6. To playback, select the level and then touch the appropriate window.
7. Playback volume can be adjusted by turning the VOLUME CONTROL knob located under the unit.
8. Turn the unit off by rotating the VOLUME CONTROL knob counterclockwise until you hear an audible “click”.
Important Notes: The vibration can be turned off if so desired, by turning the Vibration ON/OFF toggle switch to the OFF position. This control is located on the back of the unit.
The Symbol Communicator will shut off automatically after playback, to preserve battery life. However, the device still drains a very small current in this "sleep" mode. Therefore, if the unit is not going to be used for a prolonged amount of time (more than a few days), it is recommended that the unit be turned off, to extend overall battery life. This can be done by turning the VOLUME CONTROL knob counterclockwise, until you hear an audible "click".
Troubleshooting:
Problem: The unit fails to operate, or operates incorrectly.
Action #1: Disconnect the power by turning OFF the unit for 20 seconds to reset the
unit. If the unit still does not work correctly after the power is reconnected, replace the batteries observing proper polarity.
Action #2: If the unit still does not work, make sure there is no dirt or obstacles between the square plates and the housing of the unit.
Care of Unit:
The Symbol Communicator can be wiped clean with any household multi-purpose cleaner and disinfectant. We recommend Simple Green, which is a non toxic biodegradable all-purpose cleaner.
Do not submerge the unit, as it will damage the electrical components.
Do not use abrasive cleaners, as they will scratch the surface of the unit.

“Tactile Symbols…offer another important communication option for individuals with complex sensory and communicative needs. Clinical applications have demonstrated the importance of tactile symbols as a communication option for this population.” Lynn S. Sweeney, M.A., CCC-SLP.
“Wonderful!...tactile symbols are well thought out, durable and fill a void for a population that is underserved. There is very little in the way of communication options for the non-verbal individual. Tactile Talk fills this void.” Pati King
