Troubleshooting: Problem: The unit fails to operate, or operates incorrectly.
Action #1: Disconnect the power by turning OFF the unit for 20 seconds to
reset the unit. If the unit still does not work correctly after the power is reconnected, replace the batteries observing proper polarity.
Action #2: If the unit still does not work, make sure there is no dirt or obstacles between the square plates and the housing of the unit.
Do not use abrasive cleaners, as they will scratch the surface of the unit. Do not submerge the unit, as it will damage the electrical components.

USER’S GUIDE
Page 2
Our popular eight message 6-level communicator is now available on an 18" gooseneck. Great for those who cannot access tabletop communicators or who otherwise require special positioning. As with all of our Cheap Talks, it provides bright icon holders and easy to record messages. Cheap Talk 8 Size: 13½L" x 8½"W x 3½"H. Requires 4 AA Batteries.
Operation:
1. Carefully turn over unit to reveal battery compartment. Remove the cover then, observing polarity, install four AA size batteries into the holder. Use alkaline batteries only (e.g. Duracell or Energizer brand). Do not use rechargeable batteries or any other type of batteries because they supply lower voltage and the unit will not perform properly. Never mix old and new batteries together or different brands or types together.
2. Move the LEVEL SELECTOR Switch located under the unit to Level 1.
3. To record, first depress and hold the red RECORD button located under the unit. Next, depress one of the eight square plates on the front of the unit while still holding the RECORD button and speak into the microphone located on the back panel of the unit.
4. Release both the plate and the recording button when the recording is over. Play back your message by pressing and releasing the same square used to record. Each of the remaining squares can be programmed in the same manner.
Note: The unit will retain recorded information indefinitely, even if the battery is disconnected. Previously stored information will be erased only when a new recording is performed.
5. Move the LEVEL SELECTOR Switch to Level 2 and repeat Step 3. Continue programming additional levels, if needed.
6. Draw or print corresponding icons or words on a sheet of paper measuring 5-1/2” x 10” so they will appear through the eight cutouts on the housing, when inserted. Our use our Easy to Use Icon Maker CD item No.4020 which has pre-made templates and picture icons.
7. Carefully insert the sheet between the two top cover plates. Slide the page
down until your icons or words appear through the eight square windows.
8. To playback, select the level and then touch the appropriate window.
9. Playback volume can be adjusted by turning the VOLUME CONTROL
knob located under the unit.
10. Turn the unit off by rotating the VOLUME CONTROL knob counterclockwise until you hear an audible “click”.
11. This unit is equipped with jacks, which can accommodate up to 4 external switches, and has two additional jacks that work as play-it output jacks. The switches will allow the user to independently activate 4 of the sound segments as the buttons on the front panel do. The jacks correspond to the segments as follows: The first jack on the left corresponds to the top left square and progress sequentially from left to right.
12. The two play-it jacks will play your pre-recorded message, as well as activate a switch adapted toy or device. To do this plug one end of the supplied double ended cords into one of the play-it jacks and the other end into your toy or device. Press the corresponding square and it will play your message and activate the toy or device for as long as the plate is depressed.
Mounting Information:
13. Using the universal mounting clamp, secure the unit onto a wheelchair, bedrail or table, etc. Once it is clamped on, adjust the gooseneck so that the Cheap Talk is positioned appropriately for the user.
14. If desired the Cheap Talk can be removed from the Gooseneck arm, by unscrewing it from the arm. The Cheap Talk can now be used on a table top or wheelchair tray like our standard Cheap Talk models.
Important Notes: When switching from one level to another, allow 5 seconds for the unit to switch programs, before recording new messages or playing back existing messages.
The 6-Level Communicator will shut off automatically after playback, to preserve battery life. However, the device still drains a very small current in this "sleep" mode. Therefore, if the unit is not going to be used for a prolonged amount of time (more than a few days), it is recommended that the unit be turned off, to extend overall battery life. This can be done by turning the VOLUME CONTROL knob counterclockwise, until you hear an audible "click".
