USER’S GUIDE

Now with two scan modes!
Linear scanning allows the user to start scanning with objects, photographs or
symbols. Choose either automatic or inverse scanning with your external
switch (not included). Each compartment has its own switch for direct
selection. Device has four 5-second messages on 12 levels. Size: 18"L x 10"W
x 6"H. Requires Capability Switch and 4 AA Batteries
Operation:
1. The Compartment Communicator requires 4 AA batteries (Not included).
Alkaline batteries are recommended because they last longer. Do not use
rechargeable batteries because they supply lower voltage and the unit may
not perform as well.
2. The battery compartment is located under the unit. Carefully turn the unit
over. Remove the battery covers screw by turning it counterclockwise with
a Phillips head screwdriver. Install batteries, being careful to observe proper
battery polarity.
3. Replace the battery case cover and secure with the screw. Do not overtighten.
4. To record, first turn the On/Off/Vol control knob located on the left side of
the unit On. Next depress and hold the “RECORD” button, located on the
right side of the unit then depress one of the four segment buttons and speak
into the microphone (small black circle located top center of
compartments), between 6 to 8 inches away for best recording. Release
both buttons once recording is over. Playback your message by pressing
and releasing the same segment button used to record. Each of the
remaining segments can be programmed in the same manner.
Levels:
Using the Level button on the left side of the unit you can record 12-levels or sets, of
four messages per level for a total of 48 messages at 5 seconds record time per
message. To record the level announcement messages first turn the unit ON, you
will hear a message play this is level one. Press and hold the Record button, then
while holding the REC button press the Level changer button and speak your level
announcement. When finished release both buttons. To record the next level
announcement first press the Level changer button once a message will play, you are
now on level two. Repeat recording as before. Record all remaining level
announcements in the same manner. Record your messages as in operation No.4.
Record remaining levels in the same manner. Each levels recording will be saved
until you record over them. If you choose not to use all 12 levels you still have only
5 seconds of recording time per message.
Please Note:
The unit will retain recorded information indefinitely, even if the battery is
disconnected. Previously stored information will be erased only when a new
recording is performed.
5. Changeable picture cards (Not included) slide behind the clear covers on
the black 3-inch x 3-inch icon holders. Each icon holder is held in place
with Velcro so that the user can quickly change the icons.
Scanning:
The 4 Compartment Communicator has two different scan modes. When
turning the unit ON from the OFF position, the unit will reset automatically to
Scan Mode 1. To change scan modes, press switch plates One and four
simultaneously and hold until a beep is heard and release the plates. The
following is a description of each scan mode and its function:
1. Scan Mode 1: Inverse scanning. Plug a capability switch into the Jack
located on the rear of the unit. Press and hold the capability switch to scan
each of the four icons. The unit will begin scanning the LED lights and
play each message as it scans through the compartments. The desired
compartment is selected by releasing your switch; the message will play
back at a higher volume level. To start scanning again press and hold your
switch as before, the scanning will always start from the first compartment
regardless of the compartment you last selected. Scan speed can be
adjusted by moving the knob located on the back of the unit. Facing the
front of the unit, if you turn the knob clockwise scanning speed increases
turning the knob counter-clockwise decreases the scanning speed.
Scan Mode 2: Automatic scanning. Plug a capability switch into the Jack
located on the rear of the unit. Press the capability switch for a moment
and then release. The unit will automatically scan each of the four icons
and continue scanning until the next press of the capability switch. It will
then play the message of the icon currently illuminated by the red LED at a
higher volume.
1. If the unit fails to operate, or operates incorrectly, disconnect the power by
removing one of the batteries for 20 seconds to reset the unit. If the unit still
does not work correctly after battery is reconnected, replace all batteries.
