Instructions for Use
The ‘ENA 5 Instructions for Use’ has been awarded the seal of approval by the independent German Technical Inspection Agency, TÜV SÜD, due to its easy-to-understand style, its thoroughness and coverage of safety aspects.

IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS
These safeguards apply for machines with UL safety test (see rating plate and chapter 8, ‘Technical data’).
Follow the basic safety precautions
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed, to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and/or injury to persons, including the following:
Z Read all instructions. Z Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs. Z To protect against fire, electric shock and injury to persons, do not
immerse cord, plugs, or body of machine in water or other liquid.
Z Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or
near children.
Z Unplug from outlet when not in use and before cleaning. Allow to
cool before putting or taking off parts, and before cleaning the appliance.
Z Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug or
after the appliance malfunctions, or has been damaged in any manner. Return appliance to the nearest authorized service facility for examination, repair or adjustment.
Z The use of accessory attachment not recommended by the
appliance manufacturer may result in fire, electric shock, or injury to persons.
Z Do not use outdoors. Z Do not let the cord hang over the edge of a table or counter, or
touch hot surfaces.
Z Do not place on or near a hot gas or electric burner, or in a heated
oven.
Z Always attach plug to appliance first, then plug cord into the wall
outlet. To disconnect, turn any control to ‘OFF’ then remove plug from wall outlet.
Z Do not use appliance for other than intended use. Z Use extreme caution when dispensing hot steam. Z For household use only.

Special cord set instructions
Warning
Caution
a. A short power supply cord is provided to reduce the risk resulting
from becoming entangled in or tripping over a long cord. Your ENA has a 3-pin grounded plug. b. Longer extension cords are available and may be used if care is
exercised in their use. c. If an extension cord is used,
1. the marked electrical rating of the extension cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance, and
2. if the appliance is of the grounded type, the extension cord should be a grounding type 3-wire cord, and
3. the longer cord shall be arranged so that it will not drape over the counter top or tabletop where it can be pulled on by children of tripped over.
Z As a safety feature, this plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one
way.
Z If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still
does not fit, contact a qualified electrician.
Z Do not modify the plug in any way or attempt to defeat this
safety feature.
To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not remove any service covers. No user serviceable parts inside. Repair should be done by authorized personnel only.
This appliance is for household use. Any servicing other than cleaning and user maintenance should be performed by an authorized service representative:

NEVER DO (or you will void your warranty protection):
Z Never fill instant coffee, chocolate mix etc. into the grinder or
ground coffee funnel (grinder by-pass). It will damage the functioning of the brewing chamber.
Z Never fill sugar coated coffee beans into the bean hopper. In case
of doubt, call your dealer.
Z Never fill anything other than coffee beans into the bean container
(no chocolate, no rice, no nuts, no spices, nothing other than roasted coffee beans).
Z Never do anything with the machine which is not described in the
User‘s Manual. In case of doubt, call your dealer.
Z Keep your hands and the cord away from hot parts of the
appliance during operation.
Z Never clean with scouring powders or hard implements.

Proper use
The machine has been designed and built for domestic use. It should only be used to prepare coffee and to heat milk and water. Use for any other purpose will be deemed improper. JURA Elektroapparate AG cannot accept any responsibility for the consequences of improper use.
Before using the machine always carefully read and comply with all these instructions. Keep this manual close to the ENA and pass it on to the next user if applicable.
For your safety
Please read and note the following important safety information carefully. This can prevent potentially fatal injury due to electric shock:
Z Never use a machine which has been
damaged or which has a defective power cable.
Z If there are any signs of damage, for example
if there is a smell of burning, unplug the machine from the mains supply immediately and contact the JURA service centre.
Z If the power cable for this machine is
damaged, it must be repaired either directly by JURA or by a JURA approved service centre.
Z Make sure that the ENA and the power cable
are not located close to hot surfaces.
Z Be careful to ensure that the power cable
does not become trapped and does not rub against sharp edges.
Z Never open and repair the machine yourself.
Do not modify the machine in any way that is not described in the ENA manual. The machine contains live parts. If opened, there is a danger of fatal injury. Repairs may only be carried out by JURA approved service centres, using original spare parts and accessories.
There is a risk of scalds and burns from the spouts or the nozzle:
Z Place the machine out of the reach of
children.
Z Do not touch any hot parts. Use the handles
provided.
Z Be careful to ensure that the appropriate
nozzle is correctly installed and clean. The nozzle or parts of the nozzle could become detached if the parts are not assembled correctly or a blockage occurs.
A defective machine is not safe and could cause injury or fire. To avoid damage and any associated risk of injury or fire:
Z Never allow the power cable to hang down
loosely. The power cable could trip someone or be damaged.
Z Protect your ENA from environmental
influences such as rain, frost and direct sunlight.
Z Do not put the ENA, cable or connections in
water.
Z Do not put the ENA or any individual parts in
the dishwasher.
Z Turn your ENA off and disconnect the mains
plug before starting any cleaning operation. Always wipe your ENA with a damp cloth, never a wet cloth, and protect it from constant water splashes.
Z Only connect the machine to a power supply
in accordance with the information on the rating plate. The rating plate is located on the underside of your ENA. Further technical data is given in Chapter 8 ‘Technical data’ .
Z Use only original JURA care products.
Use of accessories that are not explicitly recommended by JURA could damage the ENA.
Z Do not use any coffee beans treated with
additives or caramelised coffee beans.
Z Always fill the water tank with cold, fresh
water.
Z If you are absent for a prolonged period of
time, turn the machine off.

Z do not have the physical, sensory or mental
capabilities to use the machine safely or
Z are inexperienced or lack knowledge in how
to use the machine safely must be supervised by a responsible person when using it, or must be instructed in how to use it correctly.
Safe handling of the CLARIS filter cartridges:
Z Filter cartridges should be kept out of the
reach of children.
Z Store filter cartridges dry in the sealed
package.
Z Protect filter cartridges from heat and direct
sunlight.
Z Do NOT use damaged filter cartridges. Z Do NOT open filter cartridges.

3-colour plain text display
Your ENA features a 3-colour plain text display. The colours of the display texts have the following meanings:
Z Green: Your ENA is ready for use. Z Red: The ENA is prompting you to perform an
action.
Z Yellow: You are in programming mode.
1 Preparing and using for the first time
This chapter provides the information you need for trouble-free use of your ENA and gives you a step-by-step guide to preparing your ENA for your first coffee experience.
Setting up
When setting up your ENA, please note the following:
Z Place the machine on a horizontal surface
that cannot be damaged by water.
Z Select a position for the ENA where it is
protected against overheating.
T Remove the water tank and rinse with cold
water.
T Fill the water tank with cold, fresh water
and replace the tank.
Filling the bean container
CAUTION
Coffee beans which have been treated with additives (e.g. sugar), pre-ground or freeze-dried coffee will damage the grinder.
T Only use untreated coffee beans to refill the
bean container.
T Remove the bean container cover. T Remove any dirt or foreign objects from
the bean container.
T Fill the bean container with coffee beans. T Close the bean container.
First-time use
E The on/off button also acts as a power
switch. When the ENA is switched off, the machine is completely disconnected from the power supply.
J WARNING
If the machine is operated with a defective power cable, there is a danger of electric shock.
T Never use a machine which has a defective
power cable.
Filling the water tank
To enjoy perfect coffee we recommend changing the water every day.
CAUTION
Milk, mineral water or other liquids can damage the water tank or the machine.
T Only fill the water tank with fresh, cold
water.

Precondition: The water tank must be full.
T Insert the mains plug into a power socket.
Q T Press the on/off button to switch the

Your ENA no longer requires descaling if you use CLARIS filter cartridges.
E Perform the ‘Insert filter’ operation without
interruptions. This will ensure optimum function of your ENA.
E After two months the filter capacity is
reached. The elapsed time can be checked with the date plate on the cartridge holder.

is not harmful to health and does not affect the taste.

The filter is now activated.
Determining and adjusting the water hardness
The harder the water, the more frequently the ENA requires descaling. It is therefore important to adjust the water hardness.
Example: Changing the water hardness from
16°d H to 25°dH.
Precondition: READY appears on the display.
T Open the cover behind the Rotary Switch.
P T Press the P button until RINSE appears. g T Turn the Rotary Switch until HARDNESS
is displayed.
k T Press the Rotary Switch to enter the
programme item.

OK, the water hardness is then adjusted.

Adjusting grinder
You can adjust the grinder continuously to suit the roast of your coffee.
E It is not possible to adjust the water
hardness if the CLARIS filter cartridge is used and activated.
E The water hardness can be adjusted
between 1° dH and 30° dH. It can also be deactivated, which means that the ENA will not indicate when it has to be descaled.
The Aquadur® test strip supplied as standard can be used to determine the water hardness.
T Hold the test strip briefly (for one second)
under running water.
T Shake off the water. T Wait for approximately 1 minute. T Read the degree of water hardness from the
discolouration of the Aquadur® test strip and the description on the packaging. The water hardness can then be adjusted.

CAUTION
If you adjust the fineness of grind when the grinder is not operating, the grinding wheel could be damaged.
T Only adjust the fineness of grind when the
grinder is running.
The fineness of grind setting is correct if the coffee flows regularly from the coffee spout. A fine, thick crema is also formed. Our recommendations:
Z Select a fine setting for a light roast.
U If the fineness of grind setting is too fine,
the coffee only drips from the coffee spout.
Z Select a coarse setting for a darker roast.
U If the fineness of grind is too coarse the
coffee flows too quickly from the coffee spout.
Example: Adjusting the fineness of grind during coffee preparation.
T Place the cup under the coffee spout.
k T Press the Rotary Switch to start coffee
preparation.
T Turn the fineness of the grinding wheel to
the desired position while the grinder is running.
Switching on the machine
When the ENA is switched on, a prompt to perform a rinse operation automatically appears.
Q T Press the on/off button to switch the
ENA on.
HEATING PRESS ROTARY
T Place a receptacle under the coffee spout.
k T Press the Rotary Switch to start rinsing.
RINSIN G , the system is being rinsed.
The operation stops automatically.
READY
Switching off the machine
When the ENA is switched off, the system is automatically rinsed if a coffee speciality has been prepared.
T Place a receptacle under the coffee spout. T Turn the coffee spout to the cleaning
position.
Q T Press the on/off button.
RINSIN G , the system is being rinsed,
the operation stops automatically. The ENA is switched off.
T Turn the coffee spout to the 1 cup or 2 cup
position.

2 Preparation
1 coffee at the touch of a button
Precondition: READY appears on the display.
T Turn the coffee spout to the 1 cup position.
T Place the cup under the coffee spout.
k T Press the Rotary Switch to start coffee
preparation. During grinding the strength of the coffee is briefly displayed.
1 CUP, the pre-set amount of water flows
into the cup, preparation stops automati­cally.
READY
2 coffees at the touch of a button
Precondition: READY appears on the display.
T Turn the coffee spout to the 2 cup position.
Pre-ground coffee
You can also use a second coffee blend in the powder chute for pre-ground coffee.
E Never add more than two level measuring
spoons of pre-ground coffee.
E Do not use very finely-ground coffee. Very
fine coffee can block up the system so that the coffee only comes out in drips.
E If the filled amount of pre-ground coffee
was insufficient,
NOT ENOUGH
PRE-GROUND is displayed and the
ENA stops operation.
E The desired coffee speciality must be
prepared within approx. one minute after filling with the pre-ground coffee. Otherwise the ENA stops the operation and is ready to use again.
Example: Preparing a cup of coffee using pre-ground coffee. Precondition: and the coffee spout is set at the 1 cup position.
READY appears on the display
T Place the cup under the coffee spout. T Open the powder chute.
FILL PRE-GROUND
T Place the filler funnel for pre-ground coffee
in the powder chute.
T Place two cups under the coffee spout.
g T Turn the Rotary Switch until 2 CUPS
is displayed.
k T Press the Rotary Switch to start coffee
preparation.
2 CUPS, the pre-set amount of water
flows into the cups, preparation stops automatically.

pre-ground coffee into the filler funnel.
T Remove the filler funnel. T Close the powder chute.

E It is also possible to prepare two cups of
pre-ground coffee. To this purpose place two level measuring spoons of pre-ground coffee into the filler funnel. Turn the Rotary Switch to coffee preparation.
One-off setting before and during preparation
The coffee strength can be changed before preparation or during the grinding operation.
The following coffee strength options are possible for 1 coffee:
Z Mild Z Normal Z Strong
E 2 coffees are always prepared with the
coffee strength ‘mild’.
E The pre-set amount of water can be
changed during the brewing operation by turning the Rotary Switch.
One-off settings before and during coffee preparation always follow this model. These settings are not saved.
Example: Changing the coffee strength of 1 coffee before preparation from to
STRONG.
Precondition: and the coffee spout is set at the 1 cup position.
T Place the cup under the coffee spout.
g T Turn the Rotary Switch until STRONG is
displayed.
k T Press the Rotary Switch until STRONG is
displayed.
2 CUPS and press to start
NORMAL
READY appears on the display
During grinding the coffee strength
STRONG is displayed. 1 CUP, the pre-set amount of water flows
into the cup, preparation stops automati­cally.
READY
Entering a default setting for the amount of water for a cup size
E A default setting can be entered for the
amount of water for 1 coffee. When preparing 2 coffees this amount is dispensed per cup.
Precondition: and the coffee spout is set at the 1 cup position.
READY appears on the display
T Place the cup under the coffee spout.
k T Press the Rotary Switch and hold it down.
During grinding the strength of the coffee is displayed.
k T Continue to hold the Rotary Switch down
until
ENOUGH COFFEE ? appears.
The coffee flows into the cup.
k T Press the Rotary Switch again when enough
coffee has been filled into the cup.
OK, the default setting for the amount of
water for one coffee has been entered.
READY
E This setting can be changed at any time by
repeating the above procedure.
Cappuccino with the Professional Cappuccino Frother
Precondition: READY appears on the display
and the coffee spout is set to the 1 cup position.
T Remove the protective cover from the
Professional Cappuccino Frother.
T Connect the milk pipe to the nozzle. T Insert the other end of the milk pipe into a
milk carton or connect it to a milk container.

T Place a cup under the nozzle. T Set the selector lever of the nozzle to the
milk foam p position.
g T Turn the Rotary Switch until STEAM is
displayed.
k T Press the Rotary Switch.
HEATING
READY appears as soon as the ENA is
sufficiently heated.
l T Turn the switch to position m.
STEAM, the milk foam is being prepared.
y T Turn the switch clockwise to position o
when there is sufficient milk foam in the cup.
E You can prepare more milk foam within
about 40 seconds.
T Place the cup under the coffee spout.
k T Press the Rotary Switch to start coffee
preparation.
1 CUP, the pre-set amount of water flows

To ensure that the Professional Cappuccino Frother works perfectly, it should be rinsed and cleaned regularly (refer to Chapter 4 ‘Maintenance – Professional Cappuccino Frother’).
Cappuccino with the Easy Cappuccino Frother
Precondition: READY appears on the display
and the coffee spout is set at the 1 cup position.
T Remove the protective cover from the
Easy Cappuccino Frother.
T Connect the milk pipe to the nozzle. T Insert the other end of the milk pipe into a
milk carton or connect it to a milk container.
T Place a cup under the nozzle.
g T Turn the Rotary Switch until STEAM is
displayed.
k T Press the Rotary Switch.
HEATING
READY appears as soon as the ENA is
sufficiently heated.
l T Turn the switch to position m.
STEAM, the milk foam is being prepared.
y T Turn the switch clockwise to position o
when there is sufficient milk foam in the cup.
E You can prepare more milk foam within
about 40 seconds.
T Place the cup under the coffee spout.
k T Press the Rotary Switch to start the coffee
preparation.

Coffee beans may be covered with a slight oil film which remains on the walls of the bean container. These residues may negatively affect the coffee results. For this reason clean the bean container from time to time.

7 Transport and environmentally
neutral disposal
Transport / Emptying the system
Keep the packaging of your ENA. It should be used to protect the machine during transpor­tation.
In order to protect the ENA from frost during transportation, the system must be emptied.
Precondition:
g T Turn the Rotary Switch until STEAM is
k T Press the Rotary Switch.
