The Model 3303 Rod Antenna is a passive broadband electric field
monopole transmitting antenna that has a frequency range of 1 kHz
to 30 MHz. It features manual band switching between 0.001-5
MHz and 5-30 MHz. Maximum power handled by Model 3303 is 1
kW.
The base of this antenna is constructed of aluminum, providing
both strength and portability. This housing contains the band
switching mechanism and a female type N connector. There is a
¼”-20 threaded receptacle in the base of the antenna that is
compatible with ETS-Lindgren tripods as well as most others.
The Model 3303 stainless steel receiving element is adjustable
from 50.8 cm (20.0 in) to 104 cm (41 in). For normal testing
purposes it is extended to 104 cm (41 in).
The Model 3303 may also be used as a passive receive antenna.
MODEL 3305 ANTENNA SET
Models 3301B and 3303 are sold separately, or as a set listed as
Model 3305. Together these antennas are specifically designed to
measure shielding effectiveness per IEEE-299, MIL-STD-285 and
NSA 65-6. The set operates from 1 kHz to 30 MHz. Maximum
power required to measure the attenuation required by NSA 65-6 is
80 watts.
Additional information about the Model 3301B can be found in the
Model 3301B operation manual.
• Model 3003 antenna base has a built-in manual band switch
and Type N connector
• Counterpoise (60 cm)
• Base configured to accept ETS-Lindgren or other tripod
mounts with standard ¼”-20 threads
• Individually calibrated per (ESCM) or IEEE Std. 291 using
NIST traceable equipment. By knowing the actually antenna
factors and performance characteristics of an antenna instead
of typical data, you can more accurately calculate the field
strength in your tests. Actual individual calibration factors and
signed Certificate of Calibration Conformance are included
OPTIONS
Tripods: ETS-Lindgren offers two nonmetallic, non-reflective
tripods for use at both indoor and outdoor EMC test sites.
The Model 4-TR, constructed of linen phenolic and delrin, is
designed with an adjustable center piece for precise height
adjustments. Maximum height for the 4-TR is 2.0 m (80.0 in),
while minimum height is 94 cm (37.0 in). This tripod can bear up
to an 11.8 kg (26.0 lb) load.
The 7-TR tripod has several different configurations, including
options for manual or pneumatic polarization. This tripod provides
increased stability for physically large antennas. Its unique design
allows for quick assembly/disassembly and convenient storage.
Quick height adjustment and locking wheels provide ease of use
during testing. This tripod can bear up to a 13.5 kg (30.0 lb) load.
For the 7-TR series, maximum height is 2.17 m (85.8 in), with a
minimum height of .8m (31.8 in). The 7-TR is constructed of PVC
and fiberglass components.
IMPORTANT: During the assembly and mounting of this unit
take care not to cross thread any connections as permanent damage
to the antenna could result.
To assemble the Model 3303 antenna, thread the stainless steel rod
into the receptacle at the top of the base unit.
To mount the Model 3303 antenna on a tripod, thread a ¼”-20
threaded tripod mount into the receptacle hole on the bottom of the
base unit.
The Model 3303 is meant to be under the counterpoise. The
antenna housing hangs under the counterpoise with the antenna rod
passing through an opening in the counterpoise. Attach the
provided counterpoise by unfolding it and placing it on the antenna
housing. The counterpoise should be connected to the antenna
using the four screws at the top of the antenna housing. By
mounting the counterpoise between the housing and the rod
antenna, the body of the antenna does not intrude into the field
being measured. Next, the rod element should be attached to the
fitting at the center of the unit, through the hole in the
counterpoise. The rod should then be extended to 41 inches.
If the unit is to be mounted on a tripod, it is recommended that the
tripod be non-conductive.
OPERATION
CAUTION: Be sure to reduce amplifier power to zero watts before
band switching the 3303.
Select the frequency band desired by rotating the band switch on
the 3303 transmitting antenna.
SUGGESTED TEST PROCEDURE FOR
MEASURING ELECTRONIC FIELD
SHIELDING EFFECTIVENESS
Set the transmitting and receiving antennas, 24 inches + thickness
of screen room wall, apart from each other. Set up equipment as
shown in Figure 1. Turn generator to “ON” position. Disable RF
output of generator. Turn amplifier to “ON” position. Turn
receiver to “ON” position. Turn Model 3301B receiver rod power
“ON” (verify green light is “ON”). Set receiver. Set the attenuator
at maximum (100-150 dB) attenuation. Enable RF output of the
generator.
Adjust signal amplitude on signal generator to maximum allowed
by amplifier Input. Establish a reference level by decreasing the
attenuation level until the signal can be detected by the receiver.
Note the attenuator setting. Relocate antennas with screen room
wall between them. Reduce attenuation further until signal is again
seen at the same level as without shielding. The difference in the
two attenuator settings is the shielding effectiveness. If the signal
cannot be seen with a zero setting; then the shielding effectiveness
is greater than the attenuation range or the power amplifier does
not have enough power. Refer to Figure 1 for Test Set-up. Table 1
shows the maximum shielding effectiveness measuring capability
of the 3305 Rod Set and the approximate wattage required for the
Transmitting Rod 3303 to meet the minimum shielding
requirements of NSA 65-6.
NOTE: These shielding effectiveness readings are valid only if the
power amplifier is operating in the linear region. This can be
verified by reducing (or increasing) attenuation and observing the
receiver signal on the analyzer or receiver. If the receiving signal
also decreases (or increases) by the same amount then the amplifier
is operating in the linear region.
To ensure reliable and repeatable long-term performance, annual
recalibration of your antennas by ETS-Lindgren’s experienced
technicians is recommended. Our staff can recalibrate almost any
type or brand of antenna. Please call to receive a service order
number prior to sending an antenna to us for calibration.
