Introduction
This manual tells you how to connect, adjust and care for your monitor. This manual also provides technical specifications and instructions for troubleshooting problems you may experience with your monitor.
Monitor features
The Diamond monitor is an intelligent, microprocessor-based monitor compatible with most analog RGB (red, green, blue) display standards, including PS/V, PS/2, Apple Macintosh, Centris, Quadra, Macintosh II and Power Macintosh products. It provides crisp text and vivid color graphics with VGA, SVGA, XGA (non-interlaced), and most Macintosh compatible color graphics boards.
쮿
The monitor’s wide auto-scanning compatibility range makes it possible to upgrade graphics boards or software without needing to purchase a new monitor.
쮿
Digitally controlled auto-scanning is done using an internal microprocessor, for horizontal scan frequencies between 30kHz and 121kHz, and vertical scan frequencies between 50Hz and 160Hz. The microprocessor-based intelligence allows the monitor to operate in each frequency mode with the precision of a fixed frequency monitor.
쮿
The monitor contains resident memory for pre-programmed screen display standards and is also capable of storing additional user adjustment parameters.
쮿
The monitor is capable of producing a non-interlaced maximum addressable resolution format of 2048 dots x 1536 lines with systems based on IBM. This display is well suited for windowing environments.
쮿
Because of the analog signal inputs, the monitor can display an unlimited palette of colors that can be manually adjusted to suit your specific needs.
쮿
The monitor has a power management function according to the standard of VESADPMS, NUTEK
and Energy Star. To save energy, the monitor must be connected to a system compliant with this standard. (Refer to your computer and/or graphics board instructions for proper operation.)
쮿
To ensure the easy installation and operation of this monitor, a moiré clear function and an on-screen display (OSD) present all of the functions for setup and adjustment.
쮿
The monitor complies with the safety standards UL 1950, CSA C22.2 No. 950 and EN60950, FCC Class-B, VCCI Class-B and EN55022 Class-B for EMI, MPR II, and with

the ergonomics standards ISO 9241-3, ISO9241-7 and ISO9241-8. The monitor also complies with
TCO ’99 guideline for environmentally friendly use.
쮿
Digital chassis design for lighter, more compact housing and improved display performance.
쮿
The DIAMONDTRON tube features a 0.24 mm slot mask, improved focus through the P-NX-DBF (Dynamic Beam Forming) and a screen coating with excellent picture contrast.
쮿
The monitor complies with Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) DDC1/ 2B(EDID) specification. If your computer provides DDC1/2B(EDID) function, the setup takes place automatically.
쮿
The innovative tube technology makes a naturally flat and completely planar picture possible, free of any curvature.
쮿
The planar screen allows for an optically perfect picture over the entire diplay surface.
쮿
The flat surface and antireflective coating reduce the reflection of environmental light.
쮿
USB self-powered hub with 2 upstream ports and 3 downstream ports.

Installation
This chapter will assist you to get your monitor working as quickly as possible. It takes just a few straightforward maneuvers to connect the monitor to your computer. Before you start please carefully read the safety and operating hints below.
Use the power cord supplied to connect the monitor. In order to avoid electric shock, the power cord must be connected to a properly grounded plug.
Do not on any account open up the appliance to carry out your own repairs.
Very high voltages exist within the appliance, even when disconnected from the mains. Repairs should only be made by trained technicians. Please contact ELSA Services for any repairs.
Do not locate the monitor close to sources of electromagnetism. These can include halogen desk lamps or electric motors, but can also include high voltage cables or steel pillars. Magnetic or electromagnetic radiation causes picture distortion and can eventually cause your monitor to fail.
Ensure that your monitor has sufficient ventilation. The air vents on your monitor must not be obstructed. Heat produced from the picture tube must be allowed to escape freely.
Protect the monitor from damp and dust. Damp can cause short circuits, and a build-up of dust can mean that the monitor is not properly ventilated.
The power cord must be unobstructed. Avoid allowing heavy objects to stand on it.
Please note that the guarantee is invalidated if the guarantee seal is damaged!

Monitor setup
The
ELSA ECOMO 750
supports USB and is provided with special software. In this chapter you will learn more about USB and how to set up the monitor under your operating system.
The USB function under Windows
What does USB stand for?
USB stands for “Universal Serial Bus“ and defines a new interface standard which is clearly more convenient for the PC user. This increased convenience concerns the connection and configuration of peripheral devices. Up to 127 peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, modem removable drives and digital cameras for videoconferencing can be connected to a USB system. With USB, each peripheral device is configured automatically.
The USB standard defines an uniform connector type, making special cables, proprietary connectors and interfaces and special installation software unnecessary. This eliminates the all-too-familiar cable spaghetti that can result and the risk of hardware damage due to an incorrect connection. The fact that all the devices can be connected to each other—similar to a network—is also a great advantage. It means a high degree of flexibility when planning the layout of the devices: Not all peripheral devices have to be connected centrally to the computer.
Who can use USB?
The USB function is available to you if your hardware and operating system support USB. In this case, it is the Windows system that checks the hardware, sets up the USB and controls the attached devices.
USB support is already integrated in Windows 98. This may be different with older versions of Windows 95, as not all versions support USB.

An optimized working environment
You have already taken a significant step towards this goal: you have acquired a monitor with technology guaranteeing optimized ergonomics and a minimum of stress at your place of work. Equally important is the overall arrangement of your working environment, which includes some basic rules about working with a monitor.
The ELSA ELSA ECOMO 750 complies with the latest EU ergonomics guidelines (90/270/ EEC) for work places with monitors, which came into effect on the 1.1.97.
Monitor picture quality
The screen must display a stable picture. How can you check this? Simply focus on a fixed point next to your screen. If you can see a perceptible flickering of the picture, you can try and adjust the brightness and contrast to stabilize the picture. If this does not help, then try to increase the display refresh rate with your graphics card driver.
Tips for an ergonomic working environment
Lighting in your working environment
The lighting in your place of work should not perceptibly flicker. Avoid placing monitors directly next to windows and be sure that there is the possibility to reduce the intrusion of strong sunlight such as with a blind. When arranging desks, make sure that the direction of view is parallel with the lighting. The direction of view to the monitor should be parallel to the windows. Glare and reflections can be reduced by an anti-reflective layer (Lambda/4 anti-reflection) on the screen.
You can check whether or not your place of work meets these basic rules:
쮿
Are you facing a window when looking at your monitor?
쮿
Does your monitor screen show any reflections from windows or lighting?
The work desk
The top of the work desk should be at a height of 72cm. The desk top should be around 80 cm deep and of sufficient width. There should be a suitable separation between the operator and the monitor which, for a 17" monitor, is recommended to be at least 45cm and for a 21" monitor, should be about 80cm.

The seating position
The seating position is most important for work in comfort and without problems. A rule of thumb is: sit with a straight back and ensure that your arms and legs are bent at approximately 90°. Your feet should also rest flat on the floor.
It is important that you frequently shift your seating position—to practice the so-called ”dynamic sitting”—and that you stand up once in a while.
The monitor position
The
ELSA ECOMO 750
can be tilted and swiveled so
that you can set up the monitor position to your liking. When swiveling or tilting, please support the monitor
with both hands
When selecting the monitor position, be sure not to place it directly on the computer housing.
Cleaning your monitor
When cleaning the monitor, please follow these guidelines:
쮿
Always unplug the monitor before cleaning
쮿
Wipe the screen and cabinet front and sides with a soft cloth
쮿
If the screen requires more than dusting, apply household window cleaner to a soft cloth to clean the monitor screen
Do not use benzene, thinner or any volatile substances to clean the unit as the finish may be permanently marked. Never leave the monitor in contact with rubber or vinyl for an extended period.

TCO ’99
Congratulations! You have just purchased a TCO ’99 approved and labelled product! Your choice has provided you with a product developed for professional use. Your purchase has also contributed to reducing the burden on the environment and also to the further development of environmentally adapted electronics products.
Why do we have environmentally labelled computers?
In many countries, environmental labelling has become an established method for encouraging the adaptation of goods and services to the environment. The main problem, as far as computers and other electronics equipment are concerned, is that environmentally harmful substances are used both in the products and during their manufacture. Since it is not so far possible to satisfactorily recycle the majority of electronics equipment, most of these potentially damaging substances sooner or later enter nature.
There are also other characteristics of a computer, such as energy consumption levels, that are important from the viewpoints of both the work (internal) and natural (external) environments. Since all methods of electricity generation have a negative effect on the environment (e.g. acidic and climate-influencing emissions, radioactive waste), it is vital to save energy. Electronics equipment in offices is often left running continuously and thereby consumes a lot of energy.
What does labelling involve?
This product meets the requirements for the TCO ’99 scheme which provides for international and environmental labelling of personal computers. The labelling scheme was developed as a joint effort by the TCO (The Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees), Svenska Naturskyddsforeningen (The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation) and Statens Energimyndighet (The Swedish National Energy Administration).
Approval requirements cover a wide range of issues: environment, ergonomics, usability, emission of electric and magnetic fields, energy consumption and electrical and fire safety.
The environmental demands impose restrictions on the presence and use of heavy metals, brominated and chlorinated flame retardants, CFCs (freons) and chlorinated solvents, among other things. The product must be prepared for recycling and the manufacturer is obliged to have an environmental policy which must be adhered to in each country where the company implements its operational policy.
Page 40
Appendix
ELSA ECOMO 750
34
English
The energy requirements include a demand that the computer and/or display, after a certain period of inactivity, shall reduce its power consumption to a lower level in one or more stages. The length of time to reactivate the computer shall be reasonable for the user.
Labelled products must meet strict environmental demands, for example, in respect of the reduction of electric and magnetic fields, physical and visual ergonomics and good usability.
Below you will find a brief summary of the environmental requirements met by this product. The complete environmental criteria document may be ordered from:

Environmental requirements
Flame retardants
Flame retardants are present in printed circuit boards, cables, wires, casings and housings. Their purpose is to prevent, or at least to delay the spread of fire. Up to 30% of the plastic in a computer casing can consist of flame retardant substances. Most flame retardants contain bromine or chloride, and those flame retardants are chemically related to another group of environmental toxins, PCBs. Both the flame retardants containing bromine or chloride and the PCBs are suspected of giving rise to severe health effects, including reproductive damage in fish-eating birds and mammals, due to the bioaccumulative* processes. Flame retardants have been found in human blood and researchers fear that disturbances in foetus development may occur.
The relevant TCO ’99 demand requires that plastic components weighing more than 25 grams must not contain flame retardants with organically bound bromine or chlorine. Flame retardants are allowed in the printed circuit boards since no substitutes are available.
Cadmium* *
Cadmium is present in rechargeable batteries and in the color-generating layers of certain computer displays. Cadmium damages the nervous system and is toxic in high doses. The relevant TCO ’99 requirement states that batteries, the color-generating layers of display screens and the electrical or electronics components must not contain any cadmium.
Mercury* *
Mercury is sometimes found in batteries, relays and switches. It damages
the nervous system and is toxic in high doses. The relevant TCO ’99 requirement states
Page 41
Appendix
ELSA ECOMO 750
35
English
that batteries may not contain any mercury. It also demands that mercury is not present in any of the electrical or electronics components associated with the labelled unit.
CFCs (freons)
The relevant TCO ’99 equirement states that neither CFCs nor HCFCs may be used during the manufacture and assembly of the product. CFCs (freons) are sometimes used for washing printed circuit boards. CFCs break down ozone and thereby damage the ozone layer in the stratosphere, causing increased reception on earth of ultraviolet light with e.g. increased risks of skin cancer (malignant melanoma) as a consequence.
Lead* *
Lead can be found in picture tubes, display screens, solders and capacitors. Lead damages the nervous system and in higher doses, causes lead poisoning. The relevant TCO ’99 requirement permits the inclusion of lead since no replacement has yet been developed.
* Bio-accumulative is defined as substances which accumulate within living organisms ** Lead, cadmium and mercury are heavy metals which are bio-accumulative.

scription and the operating instructions, d) if the device was opened, repaired or modified by persons not authorized by ELSA, e) if the device shows any kind of mechanical damage, f) if in the case of an ELSA monitor, damage to the cathode ray tube (CRT) has been caused especially
by mechanical load (e.g. from shock to the pitch mask assembly or damage to the glass tube), by
strong magnetic fields near the CRT (colored dots on the screen), or through the permanent display
of an unchanging image (phosphor burnt), g) if, and in as far as, the luminance of the TFT panel backlighting gradually decreases with time, or h) if the warranty claim has not been reported in accordance with 3a) or 3b).
5 Operating mistakes
If it becomes apparent that the reported malfunction of the device has been caused by unsuitable software, hardware, installation or operation, ELSA reserves the right to charge the purchaser for the resulting testing costs.
6 Additional regulations
a) The above conditions define the complete scope of ELSA’s legal liability. b) The warranty gives no entitlement to additional claims, such as any refund in full or in part. Com-
pensation claims, regardless of the legal basis, are excluded. This does not apply if e.g. injury to
persons or damage to private property are specifically covered by the product liability law, or in cas-
es of intentional act or culpable negligence. c) Claims for compensation of lost profits, indirect or consequential detriments, are excluded. d) ELSA is not liable for lost data or retrieval of lost data in cases of slight and ordinary negligence. e) In the case that the intentional or culpable negligence of ELSA employees has caused a loss of data,
ELSA will be liable for those costs typical to the recovery of data where periodic security data back-
ups have been made. f) The warranty is valid only for the first purchaser and is not transferable. g) The court of jurisdiction is located in Aachen, Germany in the case that the purchaser is a merchant.
If the purchaser does not have a court of jurisdiction in the Federal Republic of Germany or if he
moves his domicile out of Germany after conclusion of the contract, ELSA’s court of jurisdiction ap-
plies. This is also applicable if the purchaser's domicile is not known at the time of institution of
proceedings. h) The law of the Federal Republic of Germany is applicable. The UN commercial law does not apply
to dealings between ELSA and the purchaser.
