1. General description
The EMWLAN modem is used for communication in 802.11b/g Wireless networks and is specially
designed for use in explosive environments. The modem is equipped with a Nano WiReach module
from the ConnectOne company.
It is only possible to operate the modem with a WiFi passive antenna, without an active amplifier.
The WiFi antenna is connected using a standard SMA-m connector.
The EMWLAN modem is powered by external DC power supply 10V to 32V max.
The modem is designed for connection with another device with a non-intrinsically safe circuit.
All the electronics of the device including Nano WiReach module are imbedded in a plastic tube.
Picture 1 - EMWLAN modem
The EMWLAN modem is built with two versions. Full standard version (EMWLAN2.5 modem) is
equipped with the Ethernet interface and RS232 interface. Simpler variant (EMWLAN2.2 modem) is
fitted with RS 232 interface only. If the Ethernet interface is available, then the cable is fixed through
M12 HSK-M-Flex gland.
The RS232 interface is connected together with the DC power supply a common cable, which is
fixed through M16 HSK-M-Flex gland. All wires of this cable are marked by number 1 to 7. The signal
description including direction is shown in table 1.
The n.2 (0V) and n.7 (GND) wires are internally connected inside the modem.
These parameters are used to connect with the device with the non-intrinsically safe circuit:

3. Operating instructions
The base of the EMWLAN modem is a Nano WiReach module from the ConnectOne company. It
makes WiFi connectivity with other devices which are connected through RS232 interface or Ethernet
interface with the EMWLAN modem.
The EMWLAN modem can be connected in the WLAN Infrastructure network as a client (works
with AP) or can work in a WiFi ADHOC network. It uses WEP or WPA / WPA2 PSK WiFi encryption.
The EMWLAN modem supports these internet protocols:
A special high-level “AT+i” protocol for module settings and controlling by RS232 interface is
implemented. It eliminates the need to add Wifi drivers, security or a networking protocol. A detailed
description of “AT+i” commands is given in the „ATi programmers manual.pdf“ which is delivered by
ConnectOne company. The default communication parameters are set as 57600 Bd, 8bit , no parity,
1x stop bit, hw handshake.
The EMWLAN modem is fitted with two indication LEDs. The green LED indicates WiFi
network status, the yellow LED indicates link activity on Ethernet interface. For EMWLAN2.2 model
the yellow LED indicates the communication on RS232 interface only.
*
EMWLAN 2.5 **EMWLAN 2.2
The CPU unit inside the EMWLAN modem ensures correct activation and working of the internal
module. It is possible to operate this CPU unit by special „EM“ commands through the RS232
interface (such as restarting the module). The CPU unit detects the low level of input voltage. If the
power voltage is lower than 10V, the EMWLAN modem automatically switches off.
3.1 Operation modes
The EMWLAN modem supports several operation modes, which are activated according the
actual settings:
1. ...... LAN to WiFi bridge (for EMWLAN2.5 modem only)
2. ...... Serial to WiFi bridge
3. ...... PPP modem emulation
4. ...... Full Internet Controller mode

3.1.1 LAN to WiFi bridge
This mode allows the existing device with LAN connectivity to connect to a WiFi network with no
driver development or application changes. The modem acts as a layer 2 bridge between a LAN
network and a WiFi network. In this mode the RS2332 interface is used for configuration and status
reading only. It supports two modes:

3.1.1 Serial to WiFi bridge
This mode allows the existing device with the serial interface to connect to a WiFi network with no
driver development or application changes.
3.1.2 PPP modem emulation
This mode allows the existing device currently using PPP communication (such as communication
with the GSM modem) to connect transparently over WiFi.
3.1.3 Full Internet Controller mode
This mode allows the simple device connected to RS232 interface to perform complex internet
operation by special “AT+i” protocol (such as Email, FTP, SSL ,embedded web server).
The ConnectOne producer supplies “Demo Card.pdf” for easy configuration and testing of the all
modes. In this document is used the setting “AT+iBDRF=9” (fix baud rate 115200Bd on RS232), but
for EMWLAN modem is recommended to use the setting “AT+iBDRF=8” (fix baud rate 57600Bd).
3.2 CPU unit configuration
The CPU unit configuration is performed by „EM*COMMAND” through RS232 interface. It is mixed
with “AT+i” protocol . The default communication parameters are set as 57600 Bd, 8bit , no parity, 1x stop bit, no handshake. It is possible to change this setting using a special „EM*COMM“ command.
3.2.1 The message format
Send: … T
… EM*COMMAND <Cr> … T
wait
wait
…
or
Send: … T
… EM*COMMAND <Cr> <Lf> … T

wait
EM*COMMAND ............... command message with the prefix „ EM* “
<Cr> ................................. carriage return character (13)
<Lf> ................................. linefeed character (10)
The serial wire mustn’t be changed during the inactivity time (T
) - otherwise the message is not
wait
received. It is possible to change or disable (set 0) the inactivity time by „EM*COMM“ command.
Only upper case characters are used.
3.2.2 EM*COMM
Send: EM*COMM=<Speed>,<T
>,<echo>
wait
Send: EM*COMM? (current setting is returned)
<Speed> ............. communication speed (default 57600)
(4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, 115200)
<T
wait> .........................
inactivity time (default 1000ms)
<echo> ............... 1- echo on, the echo is returned on sending a whole message (default)
Note: If the input serial wire (RxD) is activated before switching on the power supply and this
wire doesn’t change during 1sec after activation, the communication parameters speed and inactivity
time are set to default values (57600 Bd,1000ms, echo on).
3.2.3 EM*VER

The modem is restarted. The modem is first deactivated and then activated again.
the modem is restarted if the serial interface line is
inactive for this time
The setting is stored to non voltage memory.
