eks otus Quick Start Manual

Quick Start Guide
Introduction
EKS Otus is a professional 2-in-1 DJ controller with integrated multichannel audio interface. Otus offers a wide range of controls enabling the user full control  no mouse or keyboard needed. Assignable buttons, knobs, push-and-rotate selectors and capacitive touchpad enable advanced creative freedom. The Future Proof Ideology of the control layout allows the use of future software features. A professional level audio/headphone output allows direct connectivity to a DJ system or the possibility for headphone preview.
Driver Installation
1) Download the latest drivers from www.eks.fi
2) Close all applications
3) Install Otus MIDI & Asio drivers

Register your EKS products to receive product support and software updates at www.eks.fi. EKS periodically provides updates to software. Please check www.eks.fi/support for latest software updates.
The Hardware Setup
On the back panel you will find the following connectors:
1) USB connector
2) Headphone jack
3) S/PDIF outputs for both virtual decks
4) Analog RCA outputs for both virtual decks
USB connection
Connect the USB to your PC/Mac and the audio outputs to your mixer. Note! Otus controllers calibrate their touch sensitive platter every time you connect the USB cable to your computer. If you have your hand on the wheel while connecting the device, the calibration will be incorrect. It's best to first connect the USB cable to the controller and then to your computer, keeping your body parts away from the wheel. After connecting the controller to your computer for the first time, the operating system takes a few moments to identify the device and load the USB drivers (which come with the operating system). This is normal. Just click Next and OK for any dialogs appearing. If you have more than one controller, let your computer identify one player at a time and finish the process before connecting the second one.

Control Layout
The controls are freely assignable using the EKS MIDI Mapper and software's MIDI learn functions. The functions suggested below are basic ways to conveniently utilize the Otus layout.
7,5" Jog Wheel
A high resolution 7.5 jog wheel with both physical and virtual sensitivity adjustments. The touch sensitive top part of the wheel allows you to scratch or cue the track by rotating the wheel. The outer rim of the wheel functions as a pitch bender.
Four Selector Jog Wheels
Assignable jog wheel controllers with an integrated select button in the middle. The two jog wheels on the front also pair with extra buttons for moving in the menu.
10 control knobs
The 10 knobs are optimized to flexibly control EQ:s and headphone levels or effects in your software..
7 loop control buttons
The loop controls can be used to start, stop and adjust loops on the fly.
Touchpad
A touchpad has been integrated for mouse or user definable X/Y effect control.
Touch Sensitive Pitch Ribbon
The 80mm touch sensitive relative pitch slider enables highly accurate pitch adjustments. The amount of pitch is altered by sliding a finger on the slider, and the accuracy can be chosen on the fly by pressing the scale button. The LED indicates the pitch value, which is recalled as the user swaps the virtual deck.
6 touch buttons
The six touch buttons can be assigned to launch cue points or samples or to select user defined functions.
6 player control buttons
Basic controls for cueing, playing and browsing the track.
Dual Layer Control Switch
Otus features two layers of controls, which can be swapped by clicking the switch button. This enables operating two virtual decks with just one controller. Layer changes are indicated by the change of the LED colour.
Bison DJ Software
The bundled Bison software has a native support for Otus resulting in perfect control and minimal latency. While using Bison, the sound will be routed only via the integrated soundcard of Otus. Setting up Bison is easy:
1) Download the latest version of Bison from www.eks.fi
2) Install by following the on-screen instructions
3) Launch Bison
3rd Party Software
The EKS ASIO and MIDI drivers enable you to use Otus with any MIDI compliant software.

Audio connection
Otus can be configured in various ways: to work as a two channel audio interface, an all-in-one control device or a simple MIDI controller without audio. Here you can see a few basic ways to connect Otus to your DJ setup.
In the first setup the Otus is connected to a standard external DJ mixer of your choice. This allows a quick and easy setup in a club or in other hectic situations.
In this second setup the Otus is used as a all-in-one DJ control device, which can be connected directly to your amplifier or PA system. The Otus features a headphone jack, enabling a direct preview of your music.
In the third basic setup the Otus is used only as a MIDI controller and the audio is routed through the audio interface of your computer or an external soundcard. This way you can utilize the Otus to control as many virtual decks as your DJ software of choice allows.
