Introduction
About Eclipse
Eclipse is an evidence management system designed for capturing images and video evidence, managing evidence, and reporting evidence. Eclipse capture requires usage of an external camera or a USB camera for capture. It also has the ability to import images and videos. Eclipse has the option of a Professional software version which includes a high quality SLR camera. Please check Section 2 for information pertaining to the package you purchased.
About This Manual
This manual is a guide for setting up your hardware, installing the software, and basic usage.
Please check the Readme file supplied with Eclipse software as well for other useful information. The Readme file may include unique information not covered in this guide. For training options, please contact EDEC Digital Forensics.
About the Standard and Professional Software Versions
There are two versions of the Eclipse software – Standard and Professional. The primary difference between Standard and Pro is the availability of Canon DSLR-based image and video capture, and accompanying features. This allows users to capture at much higher quality than HD webcams. See Section 4 for dongle and license information related to your software version.

License and Support
5.1 License Period
Eclipse ships with a software dongle. If you purchased the Pro SLR Kit, along with your dongle or hardware package you will receive quick-start cards indicating your Serial #, Dongle ID and expiration date. The license supplied on the dongle that is shipped to you determines which software version (Standard or Pro) you have access to. Please plug in your Dongle before starting Eclipse.
The dongle expiration date indicates the day after which you will no longer receive free software updates or new versions. Product support may be limited as well after this time. The typical license period is 12 months, but EDEC usually configures dongles with a little extra time to account for shipping and logistics. If you have purchased a multi-year license, that will be reflected in the dongle end date. Any versions of Eclipse created before the end of your license period will continue to function after the dongle expiration date.
The Professional Eclipse software license includes the following, unless otherwise purchased:
1 year software maintenance updates
1 year new version updates
1 year software support
License end date and hardware warranty end date can be viewed in the My Account section on
https://www.edecdf.com/store/customer/account/login. After receiving our shipment, register or login to
edecdf.com/store and register your license. Your license will be pulled from our database with the corresponding information, and matched to your profile. Please see the Software Download section below for further info.
5.2 Updates
To receive the latest software updates, please login to the EDEC website at www.edecdf.com/store and enter your account username and password. Software updates will be available for the licenses registered to your profile. All you have to do is download the latest version from our website or our store.
Eclipse software and hardware will continue to function after your license period ends, but updates will be discontinued until a license update is purchased.
If the customer chooses to extend an annual license beyond the first year, EDEC will send an update file to the user that will update the dongle license period. This update file can be applied to the dongle through the software interface.

Using Eclipse
Eclipse software includes a range of options for capturing images and video. It also has the ability to add information to captures, edit the information attributed to each capture, edit the captured media itself, and generate detailed reports. Please see the following for a few important notes to consider when using the software.
9.1 Capture Overview
A capture can be a single image, video, or even a timed capture. Eclipse allows the user to enter information pertaining to each capture, which may be accomplished at different points in the workflow based on the capture method. The capture methods and associated workflows are listed below.
USB Capture
Capturing from a USB camera is simple and requires minimal setup. If you have the Eclipse Webcam kit, or your own USB camera, Eclipse should allow image preview and capture from within the USB Capture tab. In general, the better the quality of the USB camera the better its performance.
The USB Capture Tab
Page 24
Capture Methods
TIP: Use this mode for more detailed workflows involving lots of evidence property information or precise imaging.
TIP: Use this mode if you do not require a formal review of captured images and image information before saving. We find this to be the most useful workflow.
Three capture methods exist. Use the Image Button, the Foot Pedal or the “Alt”+”C” hotkey to capture an image. Use the Video button to capture video.

SLR Capture Overview
Overview
The SLR Capture board allows for still image and video capture. Eclipse was specifically designed and tested to use the Canon T3i SLR. Other Canon SLR’s may work with Eclipse but chances are they won’t work completely because the implementations on different cameras vary. Other non-Canon SLR cameras will definitely not work with Eclipse. Contact Eclipse sales if you are interested for built-in support of other models for your business needs or need a special version of Eclipse.
The “Alt” + “C” hotkey, Foot Pedal, and Auto-Approval features mentioned in 7.1 are also capture methods in the SLR Capture board. The blue banner on screen will tell you if the SLR is detected. If the SLR is ever undetected, please cycle the power switch off, then wait for the sensor cleaning to finish (indicated on the SLR LCD), then turn it back on. We recommend that you start in Auto [A] or Flash-off mode [Crossed-out lightning bolt]. If you are a more experienced photographer, explore the manual settings. The manual modes require the user to set up the shot using adjustments on the camera. When capturing electronic evidence from the screen, Flash-off mode and a dimly-lit room will produce good quality.
Page 27

Setting Up a Still Capture (Automatic Shooting Mode)
27
Start the camera in one of the automatic shooting modes indicated under the green area of Figure
10.1.
An SD card must be in the camera; Eclipse saves media from the camera by reading from the
camera’s card.
Verify that you are receiving a LiveView of your shot
Setting Up a Still Capture (Manual Shooting Mode)
When using a Manual capture mode (M, P, A-Dep, Tv or Av) you must set up your shot by pushing
the “Menu” button on the camera, then adjusting Exposure, Aperture, ISO, etc. as you normally would
if you were using the camera in the field
Connect the camera after setting the appropriate settings (Exposure, ISO, Aperture, etc.) If you want to adjust the capture settings on the fly, hit the movie recording/live view button on the
T3i (red, circular button). Then make your adjustments and hit the movie recording/live-view button again to allow Eclipse to pick up the camera’s feed and your adjustments.
Page 28
Cycling the Power Switch
If the camera freezes due to lost connection or another issue, first turn the
camera’s power switch off
Wait for the camera to clean its sensor and for Eclipse to give you a
terminated session notification
Continue workflow
Additional Tips
If you are capturing evidence at a fixed distance using our camera stand or some other platform, use
Manual Focus by moving the switch from “AF” to “MF” on the side of the lens
Flash modes are usually not the best choice for photographing electronic devices When documenting conversations, you can take a long video, then pull frames in sequence from the
video with the Media Editor
28
To capture video:
Switch to Movie Recording mode Verify that you are receiving a LiveView from the camera Enter pertinent evidence information Start recording by clicking the red “Record” button Stop recording by hitting the square stop button, or clicking the “Stop Recording” banner Please be patient while Eclipse pulls down and converts the video from the Canon T3i to your
computer [conversion can take almost as long as the length of the recorded video, depending on your system specifications]
Approve the video and continue working
Page 29
10.2 Foot Pedal Capture
Note: The foot pedal does not start or stop video playback in Eclipse.
To capture with the foot pedal, simply plug the foot pedal that comes with the kit into any available USB port and wait a few seconds for drivers to complete installation. When using either USB or SLR Capture, the Foot Pedal will become active and allow hands-free image capture. Press the middle pad to take a capture.
Using the Foot pedal to Record Video
You can capture video with the foot pedal by using the middle button to start/stop recording; either side button will pause the video.
Using the Foot Pedal to Capture Snapshots from Video
Eclipse offers the ability to capture snapshots when a video is being viewed in the Media Editor.
29
Bring the desired video into the media editor by right clicking and selecting “Edit Evidence Media” from the Manage Evidence tab
The Editor will load the video Play the video, then press the Foot Pedal during the desired frame, or push the Camera button on
the player.
Page 30
Assigning Information to a Capture
Field Name
Explanation
Example
Device
The device from which you are capturing screen shots. Categories are listed under devices.
“iPhone 5S”, “IED Trigger 4”
Category
The category of information you are capturing. Categories are listed under devices. When adding a new category, that category will be replicated across all devices in a case, to allow usage of that category with any device in the case.
“SMS”, “Skype Chat”, “Images”
Tags
A short description of the type of evidence you might be looking for. While categories are the universal category of evidence, Tags are labels that matter to your case. Tags apply to an entire case, whereas entering a tag for a current capture will allow it to show on your list as an option for the next capture. Tags are great for using as a search tool for organizing captures.
“1616 Murder St.”, “Weapon”, “Bad Guy 1”
Groups
Groups are the method for organizing captures. While tags are used for labeling, groups are actual containers of evidence. Eclipse uses groups to create reports. Your report must contain at least one group to be created. Groups are an option at the time of capture, but are not necessary until you want to organize evidence in the Manage Evidence tab. Groups apply to an entire case.
“Victim Correspondence”. “Homicide”
Notes
A longer field used for entering sentences about the capture. Notes apply only to the current capture.
“This image of the suspect’s
brother was recovered from both the image gallery as well as the suspect’s Facebook profile.”
When deciding which fields of information to fill in for each image or video
capture, it’s helpful to
understand how the info fields are designed to be used. The location of the info fields is shown on the screenshot to the right, and the below list explains each field.
30
Page 31
Using Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
Optical Character Recognition is available in the USB Capture tab, the SLR Capture tab, and in its own standalone tab called “OCR Analysis.”
12.1 In the USB and SLR Tabs (at Capture-Time)
In the USB and SLR capture tabs, OCR can be run on each capture, at the time of capture, if the user turns the OCR option on in the settings panel titled OCR. See below.
31
When the switch highlighted in green in the above image is set to on, OCR will be performed before the captured image is saved to the case.
Targeted Selection Boxes
Targeted Selection Boxes can be drawn onto the live view to specifically target the OCR engine on specific parts of the image. Only the text in those boxes drawn to the screen at capture time will be analyzed. The second green box in the above image, “Reset Selection Boxes,” clears any of these selection boxes.
Auto Approve and OCR
When Auto-Approve is ON, OCR results will still be saved and associated with the capture, but the user will not have a chance to correct any mistakes by the engine or review the results before the capture is saved. With Auto-Approve OFF, OCR results will be shown during the approval phase of the capture. At this time, the user is able to review the results from the engine and correct any mistakes.
Page 32
OCR Performance and Accuracy
OCR performance is affected by several factors. Reading the OCR Tips embedded below the “Reset Selection Boxes” button is recommended. Here are some additional tips for capturing more accurate results:
Turn up the brightness on the phone Capture at high quality Results improve with higher resolution Ensure proper focus
12.2 OCR Tab
The OCR Tab allows the user to perform OCR analysis on any of the media (images only) in the case. For example, if a user screen captures images from a video, there is no way to run OCR on those images at capture time. However, with the OCR Tab those images can be analyzed by the OCR engine.
32
Note the Selection Box drawn onto the last message on the screen. After clicking “Save OCR” (top left) the OCR data that once encompassed the entire conversation on the screen has been rewritten, and now only includes the results of the analysis on the last message, inside the selection box.
Viewing and Organizing Evidence in Manage Evidence Tab
Overview
Page 33
33
Click the “Create Group” button to add any selected images or videos into a
group. This will build all currently selected evidence into a new group.
The Manage Evidence area of Eclipse allows the user to view, organize and create important groupings of evidence. There are multiple ways to view and organize the evidence in Eclipse, making it a very flexible system.
Evidence can also be filtered to make it easier to work with smaller logical groupings.
It’s important to note that evidence groups can be created from this tab. At least one evidence group is required to create a report. To create an evidence group, first select only the images that will be included in the report. Click the “Create Group” button to include any selected images into your group.

Batch Editing Evidence Information
To edit the information attached to multiple evidence items, like Device, Categories, Tags, Groups, Notes, etc., you will need to use the batch edit feature. This is a separate dialogue where options are chosen and applied to multiple items.
The below example will show you how to batch edit items to add them to an existing group.
Add highlighted pieces of evidence to an existing group by right-clicking one of the highlighted
images and selecting “Batch Edit Evidence Properties” option
The Batch Property Editor dialogue will pop up Any changes made now will OVERWRITE the evidence information currently attached to the image(s) Clicking “No Change” or leaving a field blank will not alter that field from the currently stored values Click save to update the evidence properties for your highlighted selection

38
Tip: When bringing multiple evidence items into the editor, make sure they are the same resolution and file type or batch cropping and other functions will not work. Resolution can be checked by using the Detail Data view and sorting by Resolution.
Editing Evidence in the Media Editor
The Media Editor tab allows users to rotate and crop multiple images at a time via the rotate and batchcropping features. It also allows users to capture screenshots from videos via the video snapshot feature.
Original Evidence Preservation
When evidence is edited, the original evidence is always preserved. However, a new “child” image will be created with its own unique Hash, Evidence ID, and name. All children inherit all other evidence information of their parent evidence, as well as one extra property called the Parent ID; this links edited images to the parent image that they were derived from. This means that if a piece of evidence from GroupOne is cropped, then the child will also belong to GroupOne. The child maintains a link to its parent via the “Parent ID” property, which displays the Evidence ID of the parent image or video.
Bringing Evidence into the Editor
From the Manage Evidence tab, select one or many pieces of evidence of the same file type and
dimension (i.e. only stills or only videos of the same resolution)
Right-click and select “Edit Evidence Media” The user will be taken to the Media Editor and the imported evidence will be displayed on the left
side of the screen

Tip: Groups are a very important organizational structure when generating reports. You can create groups and edit them int the Manage Evidence area of Eclipse.
Creating Reports
Eclipse has numerous options for configuring reports, and can generate reports in multiple formats. The Report Builder allows users to export reports as HTML, PDF, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel documents. To create a final report, click the Report Builder tab and add Groups from the left section into the middle section. When a group is added to the main panel of the Report Builder, various options become available for editing that group. The user may reorder the groups once they are in the main panel. This will be the display order for the exported report.

Using the Eclipse Reporter (Export and Import Eclipse Case Packages)
Since Eclipse 3.5.0, cases can now be viewed and organized by third parties that do not have full license access to Eclipse. This allows users to capture, import and build a case, then hand-off the case to a third party end-user; the end-user can then fine tune the organization of the report. The free Eclipse Reporter does not require a license, but it does not allow users to use USB capture, SLR capture or Media Import. Additionally, the free Eclipse Reporter can only consume Eclipse Case Packages (.ecp files) that were exported from a fully-licensed version of Eclipse.
Use Cases
1. An investigator can capture and import sensitive evidence to a case with loose organization of the
evidence into Groups and Tags. He or she can then export the case as an Eclipse Case Package and hand-off the Case Package to a prosecutor. The prosecutor can then use the free Eclipse Reporter to fine tune the organization of the case.
2. Allows Eclipse users to securely share cases with any third-party that needs to view, organize or
report on the evidence in a case.
16.1 Export and Import Walkthrough
Page 45
45
Export a Report:
When you have captured/imported all of the necessary evidence/media for your Eclipse case, click the export icon from the top-menu icons.
Shown Above: The “Export for Reporter” button. Click at any point during your workflow to create a (.ecp)
case package, which can be consumed by the free Eclipse Reporter.
Import a Report to the Reporter:
If you have an Eclipse Case Package (.ecp file) that you received from someone with a full-version of Eclipse, you can view the case data without purchasing the full software. Simply download the free Trial Version from EDEC’s website or our online store to use the Eclipse Report Viewer.
1. Choose “Evidence Processing Only” version from the Eclipse Splash Screen.
2. Click “New Case” if you would like to import a new Case Package. Enter the location of the Case
Package you received. Additionally, give a destination for the case to be saved. Click “Open Case” or “Recent Cases” if you would like to work on an existing Case Package.
Page 46
Shown Above: The “New Case” dialogue for importing a Case Package to the Eclipse Reporter.
46
3. Once you have opened or imported an Eclipse Case Package, you will have access to the Manage
Evidence, Media Editor, and Report Builder tabs. You may now reorganize and regroup the evidence to fit your needs as the end-user. When you are ready, export a new report from the Report Builder.
Eclipse Use Cases and Examples
Below are some example workflows for various applications of Eclipse. The first is a mobile forensics application for law enforcement. The second is a lab application for documenting QA cases for a hardware company. The end goal of both of these cases is to capture pertinent information, organize and prepare the information clearly, and then present the information in an exported report (Word, Excel, HTML, or PDF). The workflows below assume the user is using the DSLR Capture mode, but this guide can easily be applied to USB capture as well.
17.1 The Mobile Forensics Case
Law Enforcement often uses the Eclipse System to document evidence in cases where evidence must be captured from mobile devices. Given several suspect phones, varying types of electronic data (Emails, Text Messages, and Photos), and additional evidence, it quickly becomes vital that the operator of the Eclipse System uses an efficient workflow.
Page 47
This case involves two suspects in a robbery that occurred at a local camera store, Central Coast Camera. Phones recovered from both suspects are now being documented by the Central Coast Police Department. The Central Coast PD has been tasked with preparing a report for prosecutors.
1. Identify Pertinent Data and Information: In this case, we need to process two phones. We need to
identify the relevant information in the devices. This should be done before booting up Eclipse.
2. Set up the Eclipse System: See section 7, Starting the Software and Configuring Hardware & 8,
Configuring Hardware for the Pro SLR Kit
3. Set up the case: We will now create a new case called the Central Coast Camera Robbery. See
Starting a Case. We will leave the case in the default folder, but we will fill out the Case Description
with our Suspects, the phones, and our internal Case Number. In the Advanced Case Properties, note we have made two custom field-value pairs, which will be displayed with the case information at the top of every report generated by this case.
47
Page 48
48
Shown Above: Setting up a New Case.
Page 49
49
4. Capture the Relevant Evidence – See SLR Capture Overview (or Capture Overview if using USB)
At this stage, you will be filling in the User Properties on the right side of the screen. New properties were added by clicking the “Add New” item at the bottom of each dropdown. See below.
Page 50
50
Shown Above: For each User Property, at the bottom of each dropdown is the “Add New …” field.
Note the “Add New Tag” item from the dropdown is about to be selected in the image above. This will
prompt a new dialogue for the operator to add a new tag. Tags are a flexible user property that are useful for searching keywords to find important evidence. You can give as many tags as you want to a piece of evidence. The Category and Evidence Type fields read “Text Messages to Suspect 2” and “Phone – Galaxy S3.” You can only give one Category and one Evidence Type property to each piece of evidence. Below you can see that a new group is being created. Groups are consumed by the Report Builder. If you create Group
1 and Group 2, you can use Group 1 and Group 2 in future reports. Below a new group called “Jack Demerch Phone Evidence” is being created. One piece of evidence can have as many groups as
you deem necessary for your use case. However, keep in mind that in the exported report, that piece of evidence will be shown in each Group section of the report that you have assigned it to. For example, if you included a piece of evidence in Group 1 and Group 2, it would show up twice in the report. Once under Group 1 and again under Group 2. User Properties can always be changed, edited, added, or removed later.
Page 51
51
Shown above: Creating a group called “Jack Demerch Phone Evidence.” Dialogue was triggered by clicking “Add New Group” under the “Groups” dropdown on the right-hand side.
We are now ready to capture. Hit the hotkey or click the Snapshot button to save the image on screen with all of its current User Properties. The image will be saved. Whenever an image is captured in Eclipse it is
given some Evidence Properties as well. These are show below in the green box. These are the Hash, the Date, the image/video type, File Size, File Name, Evidence ID, and the Source. The preview ribbon at
the bottom of the screen will show your recent captures. If clicked, you will be able to see the Evidence Properties and the User Properties (Evidence Type, Category, Tags, Groups and Notes)
Page 52
Evidence Properties shown in top right green box for a run of the mill Eclipse capture.
52
Eclipse Properties Explained:
Evidence ID: A unique number given to each image in an Eclipse Case. If a piece of evidence is deleted, that
Evidence ID will not be reissued to subsequent pieces of evidence
Evidence Filename: The name of the file as stored in the computer’s file system Type: JPEG or MP4. Other file types are converted to JPEG or MP4 when imported to Eclipse. Size: The size in Megabytes of the File Resolution: The dimensional width and height in pixels of the file Hash: The value of the currently computed hash-type. Similar to a forensic hash. Date: Time at which the capture was taken Source: Indicates whether the evidence is an Original capture or an Edited capture. A value of “Edited”
indicates that the image was edited from another image within the Eclipse Media Editor. Parent ID: Only displayed when Source’s value is “Edited.” Indicates the Evidence ID of the parent image from which this image was edited. Images can be edited in the Media Editor.
(Some additional captures were taken between this point in this sample workflow and the next section.)
5. Organizing the evidence via Manage Evidence
Now that we have captured some evidence from the Suspect’s phone, we would like to present it more clearly. We already have one group for the report called “Jack Demerch Phone Evidence,” but let’s create a new one called “Stolen Merchandise” for the pictures of the stolen cameras we found on the Suspect’s
phone.
Page 53
See Viewing and Organizing Evidence in Manage Evidence Tab. First, select the three pictures of the stolen merchandise by holding shift and clicking to make a group selection. Then right-click and select “New Group.” Fill in the information on dialogue that pops-up, then click save. See image below.
53
Shown Above: Making a batch selection, right-clicking to make a New Group, and saving after filling in the
new group info. The “Create Group” button at the top of the screen can also be used to make a new group
from the current selection.
In a larger case than this example, it may be difficult to find the evidence you want to work with or make changes to. This is where the filters come in. Open the filters by clicking the map-icon (shown in the top-left square green box, below). Select the Filters tab. Select the group dropdown and select the “Stolen Merchandise” group. Click “Apply.” Now only the items in the “Stolen Merchandise” group are shown in the main window. We can easily make changes to just the items in that group now.
So far we have:
Set up the case Captured some evidence and assigned User Properties at the time of capture Used the Manage Evidence Tab to create a New Group from the Captured Evidence Used the Evidence Filters within Manage Evidence to only view the newly added Group.
6. Using the Media Editor to Crop and Rotate the Images
We have a problem. All of our images are landscape, but we would like them to be portrait. Since we captured all of the images in the same resolution, this can easily be fixed. Before proceeding, clear the filters that were applied in the last section. Now select all of the items in the current filtered selection (which should
Page 54
54
be every item in the case since we just cleared the filters) by clicking the “Select All” button at the top of the main window. This selects all of the evidence currently in view. Now click the “Media Editor” button. This will
load the Media Editor tab and bring in all of the images that were selected. With your mouse inside the
green rectangle shown below, select all of the items by hitting “Ctrl” + “A”, clicking and dragging over all of
the items, or selecting the first and last item while holding “Shift.” The screen now shows all of the highlighted info in the left-hand panel. See below.
Shown above: Selecting all items after importing them to the Media Editor
Now, we need to rotate all the images ninety degrees clockwise. Click the clockwise rotation, then click
“Save.” Approve the dialogue if you would like to apply the edit. Note that after saving, one new piece of
edited evidence will be created from each of the original pieces of evidence. The original evidence will still exist. The new edited images will inherit all of the properties of their parent source images. Thus, all of the rotated pictures of the stolen merchandise will still belong to the group “Pictures of Stolen Merchandise.”
Page 55
55
Shown above: How the screen will look just before clicking save, but just after clicking rotate. After clicking save Eclipse will ask you to approve. Click yes to apply the edit to every image currently highlighted in the left side panel.
If we go back to manage evidence, you can now see all of the edited images and their Original source images in the Icon Row View.
7. Exporting to a report
Now that we have built an organized case, it’s time to export a report. Click the “Report Builder” tab.
Once loaded, select Add to Report for the two groups – “Jack Demerch Phone Evidence” and “Pictures of Stolen Merchandise.”
Page 56
56 Click “Export Report to export a PDF report with the default settings. You can tinker with the settings on the right hand side if you would like to tweak what is shown in the final report (Such as turning off the Eclipse Evidence ID, which can sometimes be confusing to Prosecutors). You can also save the report and come back to it later, if you wish. Clicking the arrows next to the groups will change the precedence of a Group within
the final report. If you don’t like how a report looks, you can always come back and export a new version of
the same report with different settings.
Shown above: The screen just before clicking “Export Report” with the current ordering of the groups shown in the main panel, and the current report settings shown on the right hand side.
If necessary, the Investigator should now Export the Case Package so that the Case can be viewed in the Eclipse Reporter by third-parties. See Using the Eclipse Reporter (Export and Import Eclipse Case Packages).
This concludes the first use-case example for a law enforcement workflow. Please consult the other sections in this document for help with specific issues.
17.2 The Hardware Quality Assurance Use Case
The Eclipse System is also used by companies with commercial interests for documenting lab and quality assurance processes. Eclipse is a useful tool in these types of environments because it allows processes to be documented. This allows companies using Eclipse as part of their QA or Hardware Repair services to maintain receipts on the work that has been done on any device, who did that work, and when it was carried out. It also allows reports to be generated for management or customers (in case of a warranty claim).
1. Identify Pertinent Data and Information: In this case, we need to process one phone. We need to
examine the device for defects by examining the hardware components, taking captures along the
Page 57
57
way. The lab technician using the Eclipse System will likely be using the foot pedal for most of the process.
2. Set up the Eclipse System: See section 7, Starting the Software and Configuring Hardware & 8,
Configuring Hardware for the Pro SLR Kit
3. Set up the case: We will now create a new case called the Galaxy S3 QA Case no. 192. See Starting a
Case. We will change the name of the default case folder because we cannot have periods in the
windows file system. In the Advanced Case Properties, note we have made one custom field-value pair, which will be displayed with the case information at the top of every report generated by this case.
Page 58
58
Page 59
59
Shown above: Filling out the case information and then adding a custom report field for the warranty status of the device under consideration.
4. Capture the Relevant Evidence – See SLR Capture Overview (or Capture Overview if using USB)
At this stage, the User Properties on the right side of the screen have been filled-out. New properties were added by clicking the “Add New” item at the bottom of each dropdown. In this QA application we need the following Tags: “Component Defective, “Component Tested, and “Component Replaced.” See below. Using the foot pedal allows the technician to focus on evaluating and fixing the device with their hands.
Page 60

Shown Above: The preview panel from the SLR Capture tab. This view is triggered by clicking an item from the recent media ribbon (bottom green box). On the right, the Evidence Properties and User Properties are shown. See the previous use case for an explanation of these properties.
5. Organizing the evidence via Manage Evidence
Now that we have captured some evidence of the defective parts, as well as a few videos of modifications that were made to the device, we would like to present it more clearly. We already have one group for the
Page 61
report called “Faulty Components,” but let’s create a new one called “Adjusted Components” for the videos
that show the technician modifying the circuitry.
See Viewing and Organizing Evidence in Manage Evidence Tab. First, select the videos of the technician’s modifications by holding shift and clicking to make a group selection. Then right-click and select “New Group.” Fill in the information on dialogue that pops-up, then click save. See image below.
61
Shown Above: Selecting the images to be included in the group “Adjusted Components.”
Page 62
62
Shown Above: Creating a group for the technician’s adjustments to device components. This is done so that the exported report can present media showing all of the modified components together.
Now we will use the evidence filters to show only the items in the group we just created. The idea here is that in a larger case it may be hard to locate media that you would like to edit. With the filters, narrowing a search down by the type of media, its size, duration, or any of its User Properties (Tags, Groups, Category or Type) is simple. First, open the filters by clicking the map icon (Top Left icon of the left-side panel). Then select the filters tab. Select the group “Adjusted Components,” and then click apply. Now only the items in “Adjusted Components” are shown.
Page 63
Shown Above: Opening the filters and selecting the “Adjusted Components” group, just before clicking

64
So far we have:
Set up the case Captured some evidence and assigned User Properties at the time of capture Used the Manage Evidence Tab to create a New Group from the Captured Evidence Used the Evidence Filters within Manage Evidence to only view the newly added Group.
6. Using the Media Editor to Crop and Rotate the Images
We would now like to take some snapshots from the videos the technician made of the adjustments made to the device’s components. First, we need to bring a video into the Media Editor. This can be done by clicking a piece of evidence and then clicking the Media Editor button, or it can be done by right-clicking and selecting “Edit Using Media Editor.” Only one video can be processed at a time. Using the Foot pedal, snapshots can be pulled from the video. The snapshots will show the video’s Evidence ID as their Parent ID, and will inherit all other User Properties of the parent media.
Shown Above: Importing a video from the previously filtered selection into the Media Editor via right-clicking the item and selecting the “Edit Using Media Editor” option.
Page 65
65
Shown Above: Capturing snapshots (stills) from the original video. This can be done by clicking the small camera icon on the video player (green square), using the Foot pedal, or by using the “Alt” + “C” hotkey during the appropriate frame. These stills show up in the evidence panel on the left as Edited media items.
7. Exporting to a report
Now that we have built an organized case, it’s time to export a report. Click the “Report Builder” tab.
Once loaded, select Add to Report for the two groups – “Faulty Components” and “Adjusted Components.”
Click “Export Report” to export a PDF report with the default settings. You can tinker with the settings on the
right hand side if you would like to tweak what is shown in the final report (Such as turning off the Eclipse Evidence ID, which can sometimes be confusing to Prosecutors). If you would like to view the videos in the report, export as an HTML report. You can also save the report and come back to it later, if you wish. Clicking
the arrows next to the groups will change the precedence of a Group within the final report. If you don’t like
how a report looks, you can always come back and export a new version of the same report with different settings.
Page 66
Shown Above: Just after adding “Faulty Components” to the report, and just before adding the “Adjusted Components” group. Clicking “Export Report” (top middle) will export the report with the current settings as
determined by the state of the settings on the right-hand side of the screen.

Troubleshooting Eclipse
Troubleshooting the Canon T3i Camera
Video Recording Issues
1. Check to make sure you are using a Class 10 or higher SD card with their SLR camera. The Eclipse kit
comes with a suitable card. Lower than Class 10 SD cards will not read or write fast enough for the
high-quality SLR camera.
2. Files can become corrupted for various reasons. If this is the case, formatting the card will fix any
peripheral issues this is causing within Eclipse.
- If you are receiving the "Movie Recording has been stopped automatically" perform a low-level
format.
Visit this link for a walkthrough of formatting your SD card via the T3i:

=1&secureFlag=false&TIMEZONE_OFFSET=&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=38349
LiveView freezes/cuts out
Page 67
1. Verify your Auto-power off setting on the Canon T3i is set to off. This prevents the camera from
shutting down during an Eclipse session.
2. If you lose the LiveView during a session, cycle the camera switch as described in the SLR Capture
section of this document (10.2). If the LiveView does not recover, you can restart Eclipse. All of your
data will be preserved.
3. Verify your AC Power is plugged in and functioning. If you are using a battery, verify that it has a good
charge.
4. Verify the SD card is not full; Eclipse will warn you when you have less than 1 gigabyte of remaining
space.
Other Issues
1. Close Eclipse
2. Disconnect the SLR camera from the computer
3. Remove its power source (AC power or Battery)
67
4. Replace the power source and restart your session
Page 68
68
Troubleshooting Report Generation
After long workflows, Eclipse can have trouble reporting very large datasets and reports. Larger reports may or may not successfully export, depending on your system’s specifications. Report processing can take several minutes due to the large amounts of image processing.
If a Report Fails to Export
1. Close your current session of Eclipse and all other background programs (Browsers, Music Players,
Word Processors, etc.), then restart the case containing the report in question
2. Go straight to the Report Builder tab and attempt to export it once again. Eclipse will now have more
resources available for processing reports
If Eclipse still Fails to Export
1. Check how many unique images are being included in the report. Counts over 1,000 of 1920x1280
resolution images may have issues.
2. Consider reducing the amount of evidence in the report. If all items are essential, you will have to
split the report into separate reports.
Page 69
Troubleshooting the USB Camera
LiveView freezes/cutouts
1. Verify that you have the latest drivers installed for your device and you have the proper device
selected from the dropdown on the Camera properties tab of the USB Capture board
2. Unplug the USB Camera, then reconnect it
3. Change the resolution to a lower resolution, if the USB Camera recovers consider keeping it at a
lower resolution
4. Switch tabs within Eclipse to Manage Evidence or preview an image from the Recent Media ribbon,
then return to the USB Capture board
5. Switch capture modes, then switch back
Choppy Video Recording
1. If video is choppy, or has high input lag, consider recording at a lower resolution.
69
2. Rotation filters are not optimized for high resolutions at this time. To obtain a smoother video, try
recording at 1280 or smaller.
Video Recording Pause
1. Pausing during recording only works once for resolutions greater than 1920x1080
2. If you need to pause many times during a workflow, the only way to do that is to use a 1280x720
resolution.
Other Issues
1. Close Eclipse
2. Disconnect the USB camera from the computer
3. Reconnect the USB camera and restart Eclipse
4. If problems persist, restart your machine or contact technical support
