EasyHeat EasyHeat HB Cable, 11001-001 Instruction Sheet

HB Heating Cable

Installation Instructions

READ CAREFULLY
This product has been designed, manufactured and instructions written for the sole use of preventing metal water pipes from freezing. Improper installation, use and/or maintenance of
electrical heating cable can cause re, electric shock and/or
freezing of pipe.
WARNING
THIS SAFETY ALERT SYMBOL INDICATES IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGES IN THIS MANUAL. WHEN YOU SEE THIS SYMBOL, BE ALERT TO THE POSSIBILITY OF PERSONAL INJURY AND CAREFULLY READ THE MESSAGE THAT FOLLOWS.
WARNING
1. Use on metal water pipes only. Do not use on plastic pipes.
2. For outdoor use only. Do not use inside any type of building.
3. This cable does NOT have an integral thermostat and must be controlled by a separately connected thermostat
or by continuous monitoring of a qualied individual.
PRECAUTIONS
1. If after reading the following instructions, you still have questions regarding installation or operation of this heating cable, call toll-free (800) 562-6587 for assistance, M - F, 9:00AM- 5:00PM ET.
2. Heating cables must be installed in compliance with all National, State, Provincial and Local Codes. Check with your
local electrical inspector for specic details.
3. These instructions must be saved and made available to the owner and transferred to future owners.
4. Before starting, be sure you have selected the correct length heating cable for the pipe to be protected.
ADDITIONAL MATERIALS REQUIRED
1. Application tape (electrical tape).
2. Control thermostat and/or Pilot light.
WARNING
The following 12 points must be strictly adhered to. Failure
to do so could cause overheating and result in serious re
hazard or electrical shock.
1. Never plug in the heating cable while it is coiled.
2. Never use thermal insulation or overwrap on HB heating
cables.
3. Never install so that external heat source(s) might overheat
installation. Do not use heating cable on pipes heated above 155°F such, as steam lines.
4. Never use for process heating applications.
5. Never alter this heating cable in any way. If made shorter, it
will overheat. Any attempt to physically alter the heating cable will void the warranty. Once cut, the heating cable cannot be repaired.
6. The entire heating cable must be in contact with the pipe
7. Never use metal binding to secure heating cable to pipe
8. Do not install the same cable on more than one pipe. This
could cause the heating cable to overheat and may result in
re or electrical shock.
9. Never allow heating cable to touch, cross or overlap itself at
any point. This will cause the heating cable to overheat and
could result in re or electrical shock.
10. Never install heating cable in walls, oors or ceiling.
11. Never install where completed installation will be within 1/2
inch (13 mm) of combustible material.
12. Never energize heating cable when temperature is above 50° F.
13. Metallic surfaces that may come in contact with the heating cable must be grounded in accordance with the Canadian electrical code or other local codes.
14. Minimum bending radius of the cable is 3/6”.
TOOLS REQUIRED
• Tape Measure • File
• Marking Pencil • Eye Protection
GENERAL INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING
Always wear safety glasses during installation.
1. Read through the entire instruction sheet before you begin. Make sure you have selected the correct length of heating cable.
2. Before applying the heating cable, make sure that the area on and around the pipe is free and clear of sharp edges and combustible materials. Remove old heating cables/tapes
before proceeding and use the le to remove any sharp
edges.
3. Make sure the cable is installed by a qualied electrician in accordance with the local electrical code. Control of the AC supply with a switch incorporating a pilot light is required; as an alternate, the heating cable must be controlled by a thermostat that senses either ambient temperature or the temperature of the pipe that the cable is installed on.
4. Make sure there is a properly grounded electrical junction box close enough to connect the cable. The use of a ground fault protected circuit, such as GFCI receptacle, is required. Ensure the branch circuit is not overloaded. This heating cable will consume 10 amps or less of electricity. If an extension cord is necessary, use only a
properly sized, grounded, CSAIUL Certied cord suitable
for outdoor service.

5. Install cable while it is warm and pliable. Do not energize cable while it is coiled.
6. The minimum installation temperature of the cable is 15°F (-10°C).
7. Spirally wrap or apply straight as indicated in Table 1, as
required for your specied condition.
8. Continue to wrap evenly, spacing each wrap until entire length of pipe to be heated has heating cable (black portion of set) installed. Hold end of cable in place with friction tape, then secure with good quality electrical tape at six-inch intervals along the pipe.
9. Heating portion (black) of cable must not touch, cross over or overlap itself. Minimum spacing between spiral turns
around pipe is 1/2 inch.
10. The entire heating section of heating cable (black) along with a few inches of cord (orange) shall be installed within the heating area.
11. Do not allow the heating cable set to be closer than 1/2 inch from any combustible surface.
12. Keep area around pipe free and clear during and after installation.

WARNING
Always use application tape or a good quality electrical tape.
Other adhesive tapes may not keep the cable xed to the
pipe when the cable is heating, and this could result in over
heating, re or electrical shock.
WARNING
We require the use of a ground fault protected circuit interrupter, such as a GFCI receptacle or ground fault circuit
breaker to reduce the danger of re or electrical shock from
a damaged or improperly installed heating cable. Electrical fault current caused by a damaged or improperly installed cable MAY NOT BE LARGE ENOUGH to trip a conventional circuit breaker. If you DO NOT know whether your electrical circuit is protected by a GFCI, ALWAYS consult an electrician.
WARNING
The HB (non-automatic) heating cable does not contain an integral thermostat. The HB cable must be used in conjunction with a temperature limiting (controlling) device or must have
a pilot light installed and monitored by a qualied individual.
MAINTENANCE
1. At the beginning of the heating season and monthly during operation, inspect the heating cable and its connection to the electric power source. Discontinue use and remove any unit that has been cut, damaged, immersed in water, shows any evidence of charring or cracking, or has deteriorated for any reason. Other conditions to look for are chewing by animals, debris thrown from lawnmower or any physical abuse. This cable does not contain any serviceable parts.
2. Heating cable may remain on the pipe year round, but we recommend always turning off or disconnecting the power at the end of the season (when air temperatures remain above 50°F).
