Home Theater & Multi-Channel

In the past decade, Home Theater emerged,

rapidly gaining tremendous popularity. With

dramatic explosions, crashing cars, explosive

gunfire, and the like coming at the listener

from all directions, the main focus of many

systems seems to have been limited itself to

producing copious amounts of bass and

high volume levels. Impressive as this may

seem at first instance, it soon becomes

tiring: excessive sloppy bass is no substitute

for true, deep bass; nor are high volume

levels a substitute for true, large dynamic

range capabilities. Likewise, they limit the

system’s capability to faithfully reproduce

the detail of subtle sonic cues that are also a

large part of the Home Theater experience.

These deficiencies with so-called Home

Theater speaker systems become very

apparent if one plays music: The sound is

stressed, unnatural, and in simple terms,

unpleasant.

Dynaudio has always strived for pure,

natural sound. With many different types of

music this will place heavy emphasis on the

ness, dynamics and bass performance; the

The impressive Audience 82 proudly rests

atop the Audience range. This three-way

floor-stander has enough authority for any

sized room and the most demanding music

recordings and movie productions. Despite

its almost endless power capabilities, the

82’s sound is perfectly balanced and

detailed, in part due to the exceptional

Dynaudio drivers specifically optimised for

this model.

The dual 20 cm bass drivers and the 15cm

mid driver – each housed in a separate

chamber – feature light but stiff MSP cones

and utilize powerful magnet systems with

lightweight aluminium voice coils to deliver

perfect control and incredible dynamics.

The extremely rigid die-cast baskets and

the resonance absorbing MDF cabinet

construction allow the driver technology to

perform at its best, ensuring the most

precise and controlled cone movements and

lowest coloration. Such components, espe-

cially with the low tolerance manufacturing

of Dynaudio, are normally reserved for much

more expensive loudspeakers, making the

Audience 82 a most outstanding value.

Audience 72

The Audience 72 stands out for both its

technical design and sonic merit. The elegant

real wood veneered cabinet combines the

same solid low-resonant MDF baffle and

rigid cross-bracing with bitumen damping as

all Audience models, but the dual bass driver

concept handles low frequencies in an even

more impressive manner. The two MSP

drivers work in tandem in a two-way fashion

but with different roll-offs for each to mini-

mize distortion and improve the imaging and

soundstage. The Audience 72 can thus

reproduce unbelievable sound pressure level

down to the lowest notes with no compro-

mise on sound quality. Additionally, the linear

impedance makes the 72 an easy load and

therefore a perfect partner for almost any

amplifier. The soft dome tweeter doesn’t lag

behind: it features a vented pole piece and

damped rear chamber to allow excellent

transient response, while utilizing magnetic

cooling fluid for high power handling and

increased damping.

Audience 62

The Audience 62 is the smallest floor

standing model in the Audience range, but

nevertheless a strong example of what can

be achieved in an advanced, carefully tuned

two-way design. The Dynaudio soft dome

tweeter and 17 cm midrange /bass driver in

conjunction with the high quality crossover

are tuned to perfection to deliver a seamless

integration over the entire frequency range.

Just as a quality two-way compact loud-

speaker, but with an advanced bass

performance that can only be realized with

some added cabinet volume. The cabinet

itself is carefully braced and damped and

features a solid plinth to increase resonance

control and provide an extremely rigid

foundation for the advanced Dynaudio

technology inside, ennobled in the choice of

four luxury real wood veneers. The bass

reflex port is positioned in the front baffle to

allow greater ease of positioning in any living

room, from a classic Stereo set-up to the

latest Multi-Channel system.

Audience 52

Among serious audio enthusiasts the

Audience 52 established itself as the definiti-

ve compact monitor in its class, winning

several Best Buy awards worldwide for its

fascinating sound quality. Incorporating

advanced Dynaudio technology, the 52

sounds much bigger than it looks. A 17 cm

one-piece MSP mid/bass driver with unique

75 mm aluminium voice coil, further impro-

ved by a finely tuned bass reflex port,

delivers an admirably coherent sound

reproduction, yet at the same time is power-

ful enough to impress even in large rooms.

The renowned Dynaudio soft dome tweeter,

with its ultra-light aluminium voice coil, adds

remarkable clarity and high frequency reso-

lution and is ideal for the demands of high

resolution DVD-A and SACD recordings.

Like every Audience model, the compact

52 is available in the finest real wood

veneers, be it a light maple, warm cherry,

luxurious rosewood or elegant black, all

manufactured to the highest standards.

With its finely finished surface, the compact

52 is not only a pleasure to look at, but also

a pleasure to touch.

The 52 SE is the latest model following

Dynaudio’s long tradition of fine-tuned

compact loudspeakers. Based on the

acclaimed original 52, the Special Edition

sets new standards in music reproduction at

its size and price range, offering a truly musi-

cal and emotionally involving performance.

The new Dynaudio Esotec tweeter features

an improved magnet system with optimised

back chamber geometry, while the soft

dome fabric is multiple coated for an even

smoother high frequency response. The

powerful mid/bass driver is derived from

the legendary Dynaudio Contour 1.3 MK II,

integrated into an extremely rigid, die-cast

basket. The crossover has been carefully

tuned by Dynaudio’s expert engineers to

harmoniously integrate the tweeter and

woofer. This new filter features select,

highest quality inductors wound on air

cores, capacitors with low-loss dielectric,

and zero compression ceramic resistors.

The luxuriously finished natural wood veneer

cabinet is braced and damped to provide

perfect resonance control. A truly excellent

high-end compact loudspeaker.

The Audience 42 established itself as one

of the most advanced compact loudspeaker

despite its dimensions. This is no coinciden-

ce, as even the most compact Audience

model features nothing less than pure

Dynaudio driver technology, and a carefully

tuned crossover, both incorporated into a

rigid, resonance controlled MDF cabinet.

The 15 cm mid/bass woofer and 28 mm soft

dome tweeter are mounted to the rigid front

baffle as closely together as possible to

improve coherent sound dispersion into the

room with a perfect balance of the highest

and deepest notes.

The 42 C is the most compact center model

of the Audience range, again incorporating

the same high quality mid/bass driver,

tweeter, cabinet construction and crossover

components to yield a perfect synergy in

an all-Audience Multi-Channel or Home

Theater set-up. The Center is magnetically

shielded and optimised for ideal sound

dispersion from above or below the video

monitor or screen. Together with the

optional Dynaudio Center Base, the 42 C

can easily be positioned above or below

screens and be adjusted to the most

desirable angle of dispersion.

To offer the best Multi-Channel system flexi-

bility in any conceivable set-up and listening

room, dedicated variants of the 42 were

developed: the 42 W is specifically designed

for demands of surround applications, as it is

much more shallow, and easily mounted to

the wall with just one screw and two

decoupling spikes,making it ideal for both

positioning besides or behind the listening

area. The 42 W relies on the same advanced

driver technology as the compact monitor 42,

while the bass reflex port is integrated onto

the front baffle to make close-to-wall

positioning free of bass boom.

Technology

Every Audience loudspeaker exudes true

high-end quality, with advanced Dynaudio

driver technology directly evolved from the

company’s flagship product developments,

premium components throughout and rigid

cabinet construction, with beautiful natural

wood veneer finishes. But it’s more than the

sum of the parts that makes a Dynaudio

loudspeaker special. Listening to a Dynaudio

for the first time will impart a feeling of

‘rightness’. Previously unheard notes ring

clear, the timing of instruments is right on

cue, and no treble harshness or bass boom

compromises the sound. Upon first listen,

the advanced technology is readily

discernable, yet at the same time it

disappears into a completely natural music

and sound reproduction. An audible truth.

Technology

Tweeter

Dynaudio has employed soft dome tweeters

since the first designs. Offering ideal

resonance control over a wide frequency

range, with excellent neutrality and

resolution, Dynaudio tweeters define the

standard and are widely regarded as the

finest available today. Other tweeter

materials, notably metals, are often used

instead, as soft domes are much more

difficult to produce to tight tolerances.

Dynaudio tweeters ensure a smooth fre-

quency response and excellent transient

response, free of peaks at even 25 kHz and

beyond. Considering the extended frequency

range of high-resolution SACD and DVD-

Audio formats, this capability is of great

advantage. The linear response of Dynaudio

tweeters exists only in part due to the

special coating of the dome. The magnetic-

ally cooled and damped lightweight alumi-

nium voice coil allows the ultra-dynamic

impulse response of the tweeter dome,

enabling it to reproduce extremely dynamic

signals without compression.

As any transducer dome transfers energy in

both directions, a damping chamber is inte-

grated on the tweeter’s rear, absorbing any

back wave energy. Microscopic movements

of the dome surface can be plagued by

resonance of the surrounding enclosure,

resulting in distortion, phase delay and lack

of impulse control. Conventional lightweight

constructions would create unwanted

movement of the tweeter. In contrast, the

rigid aluminium plate on which the Audience

tweeter is mounted avoids this, yielding only

the purest signal response.

Midrange & Bass Drivers

Dynaudio drivers have always been innova-

tive, as extreme dynamics, accurate phase

response and total lack of distortion were

already realized in the company’s very first

designs, while continuously improving the

technology and performance has resulted in

the renowned Dynaudio drivers of today.

The first obvious characteristic is the unique

cone shape, geometrically optimised for ideal

sound dispersion. The one-piece cone is

made of Dynaudio’s own Magnesium

Silicate Polymer (MSP), a material combining

low inner resonance, low mass and high

stiffness to deliver the most linear and

neutral response. This cone is driven by a

powerful magnet and a unique voice coil,

different to conventional designs: Its wire is

made entirely of pure, ultra-light aluminium

to enable a faster transient response and

superior power handling, while the unusually

large diameter allows a perfect impulse

response and absolute control over the

movement of the cone. This driver system is

mounted into a rigid, low-resonance frame,

tightly fixed onto the cabinet baffle. The

shape of this frame has been optimised to

allow uncompressed movement of the driver

and provide an extremely solid foundation

for the dynamic power handling.

Crossover

Dynaudio designs have always relied on the

rare 6-dB per octave filter – a crossover with

a relatively mild slope that offers clear

advantages: optimal impulse response and

timing. But only with advanced driver tech-

nology with a characteristic linear frequency

response and smooth roll-offs, without any

peaks or dips, can this so-called first order

crossover be used in favour of the conven-

tional, sharp (18/24 dB per octave) slope.

Additionally, all Dynaudio crossover filters

are impedance corrected to perform safely at

and above 4 ohms, making the loudspeakers

extremely easy to drive for any amplifier.

Dynaudio crossovers feature select, high

quality components: air cores inductors,

low-loss capacitors, and zero-compression

resistors. Fine-tuning yields a truly balanced,

ultra-smooth frequency response that can

only be maintained with single wire

connection only.

Stand

An often underestimated aspect is the

impact a stand can have towards overall

performance of a stand-mounted loud-

speaker. An inferior stand will hold a quality

speaker back by adding coloration and

compromising dynamics.

The Dynaudio Stand2has been specifically

designed to bring the best out of your

speakers. Both the base and top plate featu-

re a sandwich construction where spurious

resonances are absorbed by the thick damp-

ing sheet between the metal plates. Spikes

for both speaker and floor reduce the con-

tact area between surfaces to an absolute

minimum. Despite these features, the

Dynaudio accessories I flexibility for any audio application

The small top-plate will suit the Audience 42

whereas the large top-plate is suitable for

the Audience 52 and Audience 52 SE.

Center Base

The performance of a center channel spea-

ker depends on its positioning: For the most

involving Home Theater experience, it needs

to be close to the screen and accurately

project its sound to the listeners. This

requires the centre channel to be positioned

just below or above the screen and for

ideal projection the speaker needs to be

tilted upwards, respectively downwards.

The Dynaudio Center Base will allow you to

do exactly that and is suitable for a wide

range of different center channel speakers,

including the Audience 42 C and 122 C.

Two different upward and downward angles

can be selected. Fitting the speaker to the

Center Base is straightforward and the

whole assembly allows for unobtrusive

positioning.

Wall Mount

Specifically for mounting compact loudspea-

kers on the wall, Dynaudio developed the

Wall Mount brackets. Thanks to the swivel

joint the speaker can be accurately aimed

and fixated in the right direction, making it

ideal for any set-up.

Dynaudio

Founded in Denmark in 1977, Dynaudio

originated as a group of engineers who held

a penchant for music and loudspeaker

design. They came to the mutual conclusion

that even high-quality loudspeakers were not

able to reproduce recorded music without

coloration. At that time, distortion, timing

differences, phase shift and slow impulse

response were not only audible, but also

clearly measurable. One of the reasons for

these short-comings was that there were

only a few companies developing and manu-

facturing loudspeaker technology in-house.

The few manufacturers that did, not only

limited their development to few measuring

procedures, but failed to consider music-

relevant factors.

The Dynaudio team knew from its technical

background that the only way it could

produce a truly good loudspeaker product

would be by developing its own drivers. In

the town of Skanderborg, Denmark they set

forth to realize their ambition to create a new

generation of loudspeakers, based on the

company’s own technological developments.

The first, and most important step was to

avoid the accepted, conventional means of

material, technology and manufacturing

prevalent at that time, and to instead realize

Dynaudio’s own ideas in order to avoid the

known disadvantages of the conventional

methodology. The results achieved were

innovations in each detail of the loudspeaker,

which formed the technical basis for

Dynaudio. Many of the original Dynaudio

developments and innovations form the core

of the driver technology responsible for the

advanced Dynaudio sound quality enjoyed

today.

The Dynaudio tradition has always been par-

ticularly committed to the state-of-the-art in

high-end loudspeaker designs. Even in the

demanding premium car hi-fi business, and

the most advanced recording studios of the

world, Dynaudio loudspeaker technology is

highly respected and widely utilized – a result

of the demanding QS 9000 Quality

Certification that the Dynaudio production

has achieved, and the high performance of

the products that result.
